Women's perception of substance abuse treatment and how it affects compliance

The purpose of this study was to investigate how women's perceptions of the helpfulness of services received at a substance abuse treatment clinic affected their compliance with the treatment program. The study surveyed thirty-two women who were receiving treatment from Inland Behavioral and Health Services. The study investigated the efficacy of these elements: parenting classes, health classes, substance abuse therapy groups, group therapy, drug screening, health clinics, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Dual Diagnosis Anonymous meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, homeless support services, individual therapy, case managers, daycare, transportation.

Gilles Beaugrand-Champagne (1906-2005) a été connu dans toute l'Amérique du Nord pour ses vases sacrés et autres objets de culte, à une époque où le monde de l'art religieux a connu un profond renouveau. Beaugrand, par ses études à l'École des beaux-arts de Montréal, puis sa formation en ferronnerie d'art à Paris, connaissait les courants d'avant-garde du monde des arts décoratifs. À partir de 1935-1936, en s'appuyant sur les compétences d'orfèvres expérimentés, il met sur pied un atelier qui se fait rapidement remarquer par sa production d'objets de culte au langage art déco, et par sa capacité à réaliser une grande diversité d'objets métalliques de toutes catégories. Le fonctionnement de l'atelier de Gilles Beaugrand correspond à un modèle fidèle à sa formation académique où le maître d'atelier utilise son personnel pour réaliser de nombreuses oeuvres, tout en étant le seul créateur des objets produits.

The arsenal of democracy drops a stitch : WWII industrial mobilization and the Real Silk Hosiery Mills of Indianapolis, Indiana

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Conventional interpretations of WWII hold that the war brought the United States out of the Great Depression and laid the path for future economic prosperity. However, this was not the case for all businesses and industries. During WWII, unprecedented production output was required of U.S. industries to supply the great “Arsenal of Democracy.” Industrial mobilization required the creation of new agencies and commissions to manage the nation’s resources. These organizations created policies that deeply impacted U.S. industries involved in war production. Policies governing such areas as the allocation of raw materials, transportation of finished goods, and distribution of war contracts created challenges for businesses that often resulted in lost productivity and in some cases, loss of profitability. Government regulation of the labor force and labor problems such as labor shortages, high absenteeism and turnover rates, and labor disputes presented further challenges for businesses navigating the wartime economy. Most studies of WWII industrial mobilization have focused on large corporations in high priority industries, such as the aircraft, petroleum, or steel industries, which achieved great success during the war. This thesis presents a case study of The Real Silk Hosiery Mills of Indianapolis, Indiana, a company that is representative of small and mid-sized companies that produced lower priority goods. The study demonstrates that the policies created by the military and civilian wartime agencies favored large corporations and had a negative affect on some businesses like Real Silk. As such,the economic boost associated with the war did not occur across the board.

Finanční analýza podniku v kontextu procesu evropské ekonomické integrace / Financial analysis of a company in the context of the european economic integration process

There is a relation between financial analysis of a company and the economic and legal environment of its registered place of business. The financial analysis is based on the financial reports reflecting the requirements of the national or supranational system of financial accounting. The creation of the single internal market of the European Union leads to harmonization of the financial accounting and reporting of the individual member states. The companies residing in the Czech Republic are obliged to make out the annual closure of accounts in compliance with the Czech Accounting Standards that reflect the requirements of the 4th directive of the European Communities. Under particular circumstances they also make out the closure of accounts in compliance with the International Accounting Standards IAS/IFRS reflecting the requirements of the International Standards Regulation adopted by The European Communities. Among such companies there belongs a subsidiary, T-Mobile Czech Republic, of which the financial analysis can be carried out based on the two different accounting standards. Finding out to what extent the conclusions of the analyses differ is the main task of the diploma thesis.

TREE MITIGATION STRATEGIES TO REDUCE THE EFFECT OF URBAN HEAT ISLANDS IN CENTER TOWNSHIP, IN

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The purpose of this study was to identify urban heat island locations within Center Township, Indiana and to develop a model to determine areas of high social vulnerability. In addition, an urban heat island mitigation strategy was developed for socially vulnerable and highest temperature locations. Land surface temperature was estimated using Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery. Social vulnerability was estimated using principal components analysis and spatial analysis methods such as kernel density functions. These methods incorporate various socioeconomic variables, land surface temperature, and tree canopy cover. Tree canopy cover was extracted using Quickbird imagery among other techniques. Areas with high social vulnerability, high temperature and low tree canopy cover were analyzed and plantable spaces were assessed. The findings of this study will be shared with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. so that they can inform their tree planting campaigns that seek to reduce the effects of urban heat islands on socially vulnerable populations.

Alors que l'historiographie a insisté sur l'académisme de l'architecture de cette période, cette thèse-ci vise à montrer comme la problématique du gigantisme architectural a forcé les architectes à concilier des considérations nouvelles, principalement le fonctionnalisme et les rivalités métropolitaines. Le choix des architectes Ross et Macdonald s'est imposé dans la mesure où cette agence montréalaise, l'une des plus importantes de son temps, était spécialisée dans l'architecture commerciale et a réalisé des œuvres plus ou moins standardisées, plusieurs remarquables, dans une dizaines de villes canadiennes.

This project analyzes the sexual and gender politics of flight attendants, especially the men who did this work, since the 1930s. It traces how and why the flight attendant corps became the nearly exclusive domain of white women by the 1950s, then considers the various legal battles under the 1964 Civil Rights Act to re-integrate men into the workforce, open up greater opportunities for African-Americans, and liberate women from onerous age and marriage restrictions that cut short their careers. While other scholars have emphasized flight attendants' contributions in battling sexism in the courts, this project is unique in expanding such consideration to homosexuality. Male flight attendants' status as gender pariahs in the workforce (as men performing "women's work")--combined with the fact that many of them were gay--made them objects of "homosexual panic" in the 1950s, both in legal proceedings and in various forms of extra-legal intimidation. A decade later, aspirant flight attendants were participants in some of the first cases brought by men under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Their victories in the courts greatly benefited the gay community, among others, which thereby enjoyed greater freedom to enter a highly visible, public-relationsoriented corporate career. As such, my project helps to recast the legal legacy of the civil rights movement as a three-pronged reform, confronting homophobia as well as racism and sexism. Beyond legal considerations, Manhood Up in the Air also examines how both labor unions and the airlines negotiated a legal environment and public sentiment that largely condoned firing homosexuals, while nonetheless accommodating gay employees. This form of accommodation existed in the 1950s, though much more precariously than in the post-Stonewall decade of the 1970s. Thus, the project records the pre-history to the current reality, in which both corporations (with airlines at the forefront) and labor unions have become core supporters of the contemporary gay rights movement. / text

Most transportation problems arise from individual travel decisions. In response, transportation researchers had been studying individual travel behavior – a growing trend that requires activity data at individual level. Global positioning systems (GPS) and geographical information systems (GIS) have been used to capture and process individual activity data, from determining activity locations to mapping routes to these locations. Potential applications of GPS data seem limitless but our tools and methods to make these data usable lags behind. In response to this need, this dissertation presents a GIS-based toolkit to automatically extract activity episodes from GPS data and derive information related to these episodes from additional data (e.g., road network, land use). The major emphasis of this dissertation is the development of a toolkit for extracting information associated with movements of individuals from GPS data. To be effective, the toolkit has been developed around three design principles: transferability, modularity, and scalability. Two substantive chapters focus on selected components of the toolkit (map-matching, mode detection); another for the entire toolkit. Final substantive chapter demonstrates the toolkit’s potential by comparing route choice models of work and shop trips using inputs generated by the toolkit. There are several tools and methods that capitalize on GPS data, developed within different problem domains. This dissertation contributes to that repository of tools and methods by presenting a suite of tools that can extract all possible information that can be derived from GPS data. Unlike existing tools cited in the transportation literature, the toolkit has been designed to be complete (covers preprocessing up to extracting route attributes), and can work with GPS data alone or in combination with additional data. Moreover, this dissertation contributes to our understanding of route choice decisions for work and shop trips by looking into the combined effects of route attributes and individual characteristics. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
