Study of the works of Philip Meadows Taylor

Finkelstein, David January 1990 (has links)
This thesis deals with the works of Philip Meadows Taylor, nineteenth-century British administrator and author of six novels on Indian themes. His works, published between 1839 and 1878, belong to the little researched early period of Anglo-Indian literature when popular fiction reflected the confidence and beliefs of British rule in India. Meadows Taylor worked in India as a political agent in various parts of Hyderabad from 1824 until his early retirement in 1860. His work, his close friendships with Indians, and his marriage to an Eurasian woman exposed him to various aspects of Indian life closed to many of his British contemporaries in India. This is reflected in his novels, of which the best known is his first, Confessions of a Thug, published in 1839. Subsequent works include Tippoo Sultaun: A Tale of the Mysore War (1841), Tara (1863), Ralph Darnell (1865), Seeta (1873), and A Noble Queen (1878). All these works present Indian scenery and Indian customs vividly and sympathetically, and are characterised by unusually liberal views on such things as interracial marriage, race relations and Indian religious practices; views at odds with those of many of his contemporaries. This thesis examines Meadows Taylor's works, and the connection between his portrayal of British conceptions of India and its people and the historical development of British rule in India. Ultimately Taylor's works illustrate his view that underneath the surface differences of race and religious creed lies a common human experience shared by both East and West, a view which differentiates him from other nineteenth-century writers on India. Other unusual thematic concerns include his use of Victorian concepts of domesticity in Indian settings, his presentation of strongly idealised Indian characters, and his frequent use as subject matter of "pre-colonial" Indian history.

This Thesis seeks the composition of a Guarani regional occupation model at the Jaguaruna boarder, southern of Santa Catarina, for comprehend the historic-cultural process that compound the settlement system. Through an intra/inter site approach, we articulated questions that involve the household spaces and regional problems that encompass different strategies of the Guarani occupation on the landscape and the articulation among the different settlement areas. On this way, it\'s possible to approach discussions about the social organization, regional economy, site function, territory and settlement strategies. From a methodological point of view, the research involves the archaeological, ethnohistorical and ethnographical articulation about the Guarani occupation during the pre and post colonial period, as an exhausting work for the typological characterization of the archaeological remains. Considering this, we seek a Guarani archaeology that joint different sources to compound a narrative about the history and regional occupation in different cultural scales. We also inferred about the abandonment aspects of the Guarani territory dominium, which would have be caused, in part, due to the violence actions, slavery and indigenous ethnocide, facts that are commonly described in the historical colonial Brazilian literature. Finally, we aim to think about the territorial expansion processes of the Guarani culture in different ways, especially from the mountain range side to the southern coast side of Brazil.

Facing Competition: The History of Indigo Experiments in Colonial India, 1897-1920

Kumar, Prakash 20 August 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to describe in detail the efforts made to protect natural indigo the blue dyestuff extracted from the leaves of the indigo plant (Indigofera tinctoria) - against the market competition of cheaper and purer synthetic indigo - which was derived from coal-tar hydrocarbons. Throughout the nineteenth century British India was the pre-eminent producer and supplier to the West of indigo for its thriving textile industry. The introduction of synthetic indigo on the market in 1897 by two German companies threatened to end Indias dominant role in the indigo trade. To counteract competition from the synthetic substitute the European planters living in India, supported by the colonial and the national governments, conducted scientific research in the laboratories and farm stations. This dissertation fundamentally focuses on these scientific efforts made in India and England, and contributes to the scientific and technological history of Modern South Asia.

This study is inscribed in the confluence of the research fields of cultural heritage and a “new” Indian History, focusing on the coming up and the interest of the Guarani Mbya about the heritage and cultural heritage of the indian groups who live in Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the last decade of 20th century and the first decade of 21st century. For the Guarani Mbya, as shown in this work, value attribution and the meaning attached to the concepts of heritage and cultural heritage depend on this people knowledge building process. Furthermore, our study shows that the meaning production given to the cultural patrimony by the Guarani Mbya depends on the mythical reason and on the cosmological basis that support the way of live in the Indian world.

Dinâmica da ocupação territorial indígena no Vale do Rio Tapajós / Indigenous Territorial Dynamics of Occupation in Vale do Rio Tapajós

Robazzini, Alexandre Toledo 20 June 2013 (has links)
Indigenous peoples are an essential part of the training process territorial, social, cultural and political development in which the country has undergone and passed. These societies are living with a history of long duration which have always played an active and creative in the face of challenges posed by the advance of the conquerors in the past and at present. Given this premise, and in order to contribute to the scope of Indian History, we propose the realization of interdisciplinary work from the joint use of data coming from different sources - historical and archaeological - to develop a narrative of the dynamics of territorial occupation in indigenous Vale do Rio Tapajós.

Writing Self, Narrating History: Textual Politics in Jamaica Kincaid's Novels

Chen, Hsin-Chi 10 June 2002 (has links)
Abstract In this thesis, I attempt to examine Jamaica Kincaid¡¦s re-negotiation with the politics of power relations in her novels. Kncaid¡¦s novels, through the strategic deployment of autobiographical writing, redress the power dimension in the notions of self and history. The fact that Kincaid frames the field of power relations within the thematic recurrence of mother-daughter relations structures her novels in a way that conflates her personal stories with her group history. Moreover, such a structure emphatically registers the self-positioning act of Kincaid¡¦s writing as a strategy for survival. The first chapter explores how Kincaid mobilizes her self-writing as an act of political resistance. On the one hand, Kincaid opposes her writing which is delivered in the name of herself or her culture to the poststructuralist pronouncements of the general demise of a writing subject. On the other hand, Kincaid, through implicating the poststructuralist fracture of self in the protocol of decolonization, attempts to strategically inhabit in what Homi Bhabha calls the in-between space to define herself. The second chapter deals with the inscription of historical forces on the body. Foucault¡¦s genealogical unpacking of history in the body here helps to investigate how Kincaid¡¦s fictional alter egos bear and, more importantly, act out against the inscription of power. The third chapter focuses on the politics of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing. At first, I unpack the relations between history and the politics of women¡¦s writing in the West Indies, and borrow the poststructuralist interrogation of Western historical knowledge to contradict the West¡¦s epistemological claims to West Indian history. And then I turn to the analysis of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing, which, through its thematic deployment of mother-daughter relations, turns on the political empowerment in her strategic integration of her personal and collective history.

The abolition of indentured emigration and the politics of Indian nationalism, 1894-1917 /

Ray, Karen A. January 1980 (has links)
The movement in India to abolish indentured emigration to tropical colonies (particularly Fiji, Trinidad, British Guiana and Natal) had its origins in the "Moderate" era of Indian nationalism and the politics of G. K. Gokhale. It began with the concern of the Indian middle class that their status in the British Empire was denigrated by that of their "coolie" compatriots. However, as the details of the indenture system were brought to light, the anti-indenture movement came to encompass almost every group in India, from village to metropolitan centre, from the conservative, orthodox Marwaris of Calcutta to the westernized Parsi elite of Bombay. The issue joined the era of Gokhale to the era of Gandhi, and was the vehicle for Gandhi's transition from overseas politician to a major political figure in India. The issue came to be seen by most Indians--and many imperialists--as a direct struggle between Indian national honour and the capitalist interests of colonial entrepreneurs. When indentured emigration was finally halted in 1917 it was in response, not to a moderate constitutional effort, but to India-wide political agitation and a threatened satyagraha movement. In the process, the confidence of Indian citizens in both imperial equality and the efficacy of constitutional methods was undermined at a crucial point in the development of Indian nationalism and the evolution of Empire into Commonwealth.

OS GAVIÕES DA MATA : UMA HISTÓRIA DA RESISTÊNCIA TIMBIRA AO ESTADO.

Miranda, Adenilson Barcelos de 09 December 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-10T11:21:57Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 ADENILSON BARCELOS DE MIRANDA.pdf: 4087340 bytes, checksum: 3d550ef58b0911f0338f685d57beca01 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-12-09 / This work is a history about the Gaviões da mata, dating from the first contacts made with them, in the 19th century, until today. The denomination Gaviões da mata features the local groups Akrãtikatêjê, Kỳikatêjê and Parkatêjê, located in the native land Mãe Maria in the Southeast of Pará‟s mesoregion. It tries to recover the cultural elements that deeply link the Gaviões da mata to the timbira native communities located in the Eastern region of the Tocantins river. As such, it seeks to interpret the natives‟ resistance and their contact relations with the conqueror society and the conqueror State. It narrates the Gaviões da mata‟s different strategies adopted in order to battle the integration and emancipation politics promoted towards the natives by the Brazilian State in the 70‟s, when the natives were confined to the native land Mãe Maria. It also discusses further invasions made in the mentioned territory by governmental projects of integration of the Amazon region. It shows how the natives established themselves in the Gavião unit, or, better yet, in the native community Parkatêjê , seeking organization and mobilization through united actions in the search for autonomy and self-determination. Those efforts are made by them through the nut commerce or through the quarrelsome negotiations between them and the State or companies such as Eletronorte and CVRD miner.
