No. of bitstreams: 1 DissVLC.pdf: 2059092 bytes, checksum: 9cd949cf89b5738831701f1f4dc856aa (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-07 / Não recebi financiamento / The internet is recognized as one of the main sources of information for its users. It is also known that in this virtual world, millions of people daily access social networks like Facebook. Given this situation, it is proposed to reflect on the potential of social networks, specifically Facebook pages, as reliable sources of scientific information. The aim is to analyze processes, social and informational, which would be intrinsically involved in the relevant access to these spaces, using for this purpose, the concepts such as information literacy, cultural capital and social capital. Also seeks to promote a descriptive and exploratory analysis of the page "Science Today" and, from it and the work of Tomaél, Alcará and Silva (2008), define a set of criteria to evaluate the quality of a Facebook page as a source of scientific information. Finally, through questionnaire analysis sent to fans of the page in question, try to reflect on the influence of the level of education of users access to pages with scientific themes on Facebook. The results aim to support the hypothesis that, in the context of the scientific nature of pages that meet the criteria of reliability, on Facebook, access is mainly for users of higher levels of education, relating the level of education to the concepts of cultural capital and informational literacy. It is concluded that concepts such as information competence and cultural capital, acquired by the subjects, are determinant in the effective use of social networks as reliable sources of dissemination of scientific information.

Use of ClinicalTrials.gov Registry in Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses: A Master's Thesis

Pradhan, Richeek 30 November 2017 (has links)
Ensuring the objectivity of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMA) begins with comprehensive searches into diverse resources mining primary studies. Guidelines for systematic reviews recommend authors to routinely search of trial registries to identify unpublished studies. In this dissertation, I investigated the utilization of ClinicalTrials.gov (CTG), the world’s largest clinical trial registry that contains data from clinical trials of products that are subject to United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation, as an information resource in SRMAs. First, I examined the use of various information resources including CTG in SRMAs published from 2005-2016, and identified the factors associated with their use. Thereafter, to determine the accuracy of trial safety data reported at CTG, I compared the data at CTG with that in corresponding journal articles and FDA drug reviews. I found that trial safety data at both CTG and articles differed frequently from FDA drug reviews, but the differences were modest in magnitude. Finally, I repeated published meta-analysis (conducted using data from primary study articles) with data at CTG to find that most meta-analysis results were reproduced using CTG data. Taken together, this work suggests that CTG should not only be searched more often to find primary research for systematic reviews, but that data at CTG can also be used to conduct quantitative data synthesis.

The effectiveness of social media marketing communication for institutions of higher education

Bentley-Steyn, Lesmarie January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019 / Several studies have been done showing that universities across the world are using social media platforms, to a lesser or greater degree, in their marketing communication strategies; however, the success of this recruitment method is relatively untested. In order to determine the effectiveness of social media marketing communication on potential university students’ selection of a university, first-year students from the University of Johannesburg were studied. Through a quantitative descriptive research study using a non-probability sampling technique and online electronic questionnaire, it was found that potential university students fall mainly within the Generation Z category (14 – 22 years old). Ninety-eight percent of the respondents in this study indicated that they used social media on a regular basis, however only 37.4% used social media in their choice of a university. More than half (58.3%) of the respondents visited university social media platforms prior to applying in order to look for information about the university, with 33% indicating that they visited these platforms to experience the culture of the university. The study has found that potential students do indeed visit multiple university social media platforms to compare university offerings, but that these platforms are currently not in the top five information sources that they consult in their university search process. Facebook is the most consulted social media platform for this purpose, taking the sixth place on the list of information sources consulted. This makes social media a definite contender in the blend of marketing communication tools a university can use to influence a potential student’s choice of study destination. The findings about these Generation Z potential university students, their use of social media, and their information requirements when researching higher education institutions, can provide valuable insights for university marketers and communicators.

The Influence of Media Consultation Habits on Young Travelers’ Risk Perception : Exploring Information Seeking Practices in Tourism

Pianigiani, Ivan, Holm, Peter January 2024 (has links)
The thesis investigates the influence of media consultation habits as the developers of risk perceptions among young travelers. It deals with the information-seeking practices of individuals aged 18 to 29 by scrutinizing the extent to which certain media channels are sought out to inform themselves about travel-related risks. By employing a quantitative research approach and collecting data through a web-based questionnaire, the study investigates the role of various information channels by measuring the degree to which they are sought out by the respondents. The findings reveal that legacy media is the most trusted source for risk information among young travelers, surpassing social media and other channels. This unexpected result highlights the significant role of traditional media in shaping risk perceptions despite the prevalence of digital platforms. The study's conclusions are intended to serve tourism professionals and destination managers seeking to enhance communication strategies and manage tourists' risk perceptions effectively.
