Coping with interdisciplinarity: postgraduate student writing in business studies.

Chandrasoma, Ranamukalage January 2007 (has links)
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Education. / This thesis critically investigates how student writers cope with interdisciplinarity in business studies at postgraduate level. The corpus of knowledge student writers have to grapple with today seems to distance itself from the traditional mono-disciplinary contexts. Texts as well as the students who construct them are being continuously informed and conditioned by new values and imperatives of relatively new discursive practices. Hence, student academic writing(henceforward ‘student writing’) especially at postgraduate level can be regarded as a complex academic endeavour where students have to take up multiple writing positions. Analyzing student texts against the backdrop of the enormous intertextual and interdiscursive resources pertaining to interdisciplinarity is a major component of this thesis. Electivization of the curricula, on the other hand, while providing student writers with a wide range of choices, has created yawning gaps between what is commonly known as prior knowledge and what is yet to be learnt in the form of new knowledges. These epistemological considerations, i.e., how disciplinary knowledge is acquired, evaluated, contested, and strategically used also constitute an integral part of this research. Also of importance in the above contexts are the often lengthy and generically diverse assessment tasks students are required to accomplish within specific deadlines. The nature and structure of assignment topics and assessment tasks have in the past two decades or so undergone tremendous changes owing in large measure to disciplinary as well as socio-economic imperatives. Student writing has several dimensions in terms of the mode of assessment, egg. examination-based, presentation-based, research-based, observation-based. This thesis, however, will focus on research-based writing tasks. Based on the findings of this thesis, a paradigm called critical interdisciplinarity has been proposed in the concluding chapter of this thesis. Pedagogical and curricular considerations play a vital role in critical interdisciplinarity. By virtue of their encyclopaedic dimensions, knowledge domains relating to academic interdisciplinarity in student writing lend themselves to a wide range of future research projects. An attempt has been made here to critically explore only a tiny proportion of this inexhaustible repertoire of knowledge.

Multiculturalismo e legado literário: a identidade de mestiças em Rhys, Windle e Bernardo Guimarães / Multiculturalism and literary legacy: miscegenated women's identity in Rhys, Windle and Bernardo Guimarães

Heleno Alvares Bezerra Junior 18 February 2011 (has links)
At first hand, this thesis aims at observing the identitary construction of landowning multiracial women in Jean Rhyss Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Janice Windles True Women (1993) and Bernardo Guimarãess Rosaura: a enjeitada (1883), considering three distinct aspects: the emphasis on Multiculturalism in novels concerning interracialization in the 19th century; the protagonists attempt to pass as Caucasians before local elites and their repressed identification with the culture from lower classes. In this realm, I highlight interceptive and disjointing points between Bernardo Guimarães and the other authors, once the former discusses identity as a hereditary and national factor, and the latter ones interpret it as a free-willing and cultural construct. On the whole, this research shows how these three authors resist an 18th and 19th-century scientific discursive formation which envisaged the mestizo as a degenerated creature, with metabolic and ontological unbalance, and how they strive to advocate the image of the miscegenated on the world very idiosyncratically. Considering that Wide Sargasso Sea and True Women are rereadings of 19th century novels, the thesis also encompasses intertextuality in two different manners: on the one hand, it focuses on the intrinsic relations between the hypertext and the hypotext; on the other hand, it points out the likely relation between Guimarães and the authors Rhys and Windle revisit

Sob o signo de Caim: o uso da Bíblia por Machado de Assis / Under the sign of Cain: the use of the Bible by Machado de Assis

Proença, Paulo Sergio de 24 May 2011 (has links)
It is intended, in this work, to investigate the role that the biblical writings play both in the constructions and in the support of the main emphasis of Machado de Assiss work. Two principles constitute the theoretical guide of this investigation. The first is Bakhtins notion of polyphony and its unfoldings, constant in the terms intertextuality and interdiscursivity. The notion of semiotics contract (Fiorin, 2003) is the second. Other auxiliary concepts will be punctually used, such as the Menippuss satire, which will have grounds in authors like Griffin (2005), Sá Rego (1989) and Óliver (2008). Machados youth was characterized by a liberal activity of reasonable capacity. Charles Ribeiyrolles and Renan were decisive influences for the consolidation of these convictions. This tendency highlights the presence of the Bible, evoked as the source of principles that he defended. The prodigious work of fiction, since its first manifestations, bears witness to his great fascination towards the Scriptures, in several ways; one of them was the recapture of biblical myths, which acts as a link for the closeness between the native events and the plain day-to-day occurrences in which the resignificance of the mythical narratives take place. This look towards the past, guided by the Bible, suits well with the machadian emphasis in the eternal monotony of the human drama. Sapiential themes appear invariably diluted in the machadian writings. Wisdom has its place of prominence, with Ecclesiastes and Job. Also the biblical writings are applied to the reinterpretation of dear subjects to the human beings. This is done with the freedom of one who has a great fictional tact. Machado plays with words and expressions. He twists, contorts and distorts linguistics sequences and narratives, giving them a different brightness thus projecting new and relevant meanings. Machado, besides biblical themes, makes use of characters and several events, in a free way, to resignify them, almost always in dissonance with the religious and theological tradition. The bakhtinian theoretical support and the notion of semiotic contract fits with the analysis of this fruitful dialogue with the biblical sources, under the esthetical motivation of the crisis of the representation which is present in the machadian writings.

Remediation and intertextuality in Garner's 'politically correct' representation of Cinderella

Snayer, Leylanie January 2017 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA (Linguistics, Language and Communication) / Fairy tales have been changing continuously. From the likes of the Greek and Chinese versions of the Cinderella tale, Cinderella has been transformed into other versions. Charles Perrault and The Brothers Grimm had their way with the story of Cinderella with both parties putting their own mark on the tale. Disney made the story notorious as the consumers mostly tend to remember Disney's version and not earlier writers of the story (Zipes, 1999). Since then, various other versions in the current sphere of story-telling, especially through movie-making, have had a series of re-telling of the story. James Finn Garner's "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories" has made its mark in the world of politically correct, versions of fairy tales. He has graced readers with his satire and thereby challenged the more traditional versions of the story of Cinderella (and others) by posing a dry, humorous twist and facing the 'issues' which underlie the social problems in Cinderella such as equality, sexism and patriarchal, inappropriate gender biased terminology. Garner takes it upon himself to remediate the story of Cinderella through transformations of events and socially structured power relations, reworking the plot and characters and reformulation of gender-biased terminology. This results in a witty politically correct remodelling of the story which upholds a general moral in line with the contemporary socio-political ethos, championing usage of politically correct language.

Intersemiotic practice in image-cancional speech Adriana Evans: a proposed analysis

Michael Viana Peixoto 12 February 2014 (has links)
This thesis " intersemiotic Practice in Speech - Cancional imagery of Adriana Calcanhotto: a proposed analysis " studies and sets the image- cancional discourse as a discursive practice that mobilizes through discursive procedures , languages of different modalities (both verbal nature as nonverbal) to, in intersemiotic process compatibilizarem with the literomusical production and , from that , they encourage the construction of meaning. The theoretical foundation on which fincamos this concept comes from the analysis of French Discourse, considering especially the reflections of Maingueneau (1999), Costa (2012), among others. Based on this, the guiding research question: What proposal for theoretical and methodological approach to an analysis of image- cancional speech can be compiled from the discursive categories? The operationalization of this issue and the goal was through the exploratory methodology, in which, from a specific corpus - the literomusical production of Adriana Calcanhotto between 1990 and 2000, whose limits given in chronological order, in order to realize as their productions are organized according to the opening and closure of the decade; from the appropriation of discursive and visual cancionais , categories prepared a guide that offers a path that makes possible the construction of meanings of the text . In light of this methodology , we proceed to the performance analysis of the data which allowed us to conclude that the nature of the image- interdiscursive cancional speech provides such meanings that are only possible due to the phenomenon of intersemioticidade that is established and that. This conclusion allows us to state that, because of this, there is a verb that promote visual literacy; such discursive constructions require the reader learning about the way of reading certain discursive productions.

O Alienista : eco de vozes sociais

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcia Ito.pdf: 1144 bytes, checksum: e33d57a5d80137fdac7ef0bece06b50f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-08-11 / Based on the Line of Research, discursive process and textual production , the present work focuses on the relation between the ethos and the discourse. The ethos is revealed through the discourse, in the same way, the discourse is supported by a body and a voice . We followed the Discourse Analysis of French way, backed to the social historic lingüistic process, in the work O Alienista by Machado de Assis. In this corpus (text) we used the Maingueneau s perspective, that each ethos express a different discourse; considering the Aristotle s principle of verisimility who affirms that to the poet is not necessary to tell what happened exactly; but what could have happened. For this perspective, we analysed many fictional ethé in interaction, that results in a dialogue between many ideologies that argument with each other, promoting the text development. In this fictional world, criated by Machado de Assis, we worked with the concepts of poliphony and interdiscursivity. The presence of many voices has a functional purpose, because they are articuled strategically, to visualize the dialogue between many discourses; and, as a result, the conflit between many ideologies. If we look with attention, we will see that O Alienista projects the structure of a fictional world, reported by the narrator s ironical ethos, that denounces the society of his time, or, apart from this, the society that exists in the eternal present.

Galdino, Marcelino Donizeti de Oliveira 13 August 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:46:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcelino Donizeti de Oliveira Galdino.pdf: 583524 bytes, checksum: bff165fb7cf2b3a92482b8931aa698da (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-13 / The purpose of this paper is to analyze and relate verbal and nonverbal texts with each other. We observe the resources that stimulate readings, and also the constitutive elements of meaning found in the elaboration of the short stories: "Leite empedrado", by Fabrício Carpinejar, and "Apenas eco", by Flávio Izhaki, both published in the book Contos sobre tela, by Marcelo Moutinho. We also study the paintings "As gêmeas", by Alberto da Veiga Guignard, and "Moças", by Di Cavalcanti, that are included in the book abovementioned as reference of intertextuality and interdiscursivity. Therefore, we examine the intentions, assumptions and implicit elements registered in the discourses of verbal and visual texts, based on the theoretical aspects of the philosophy of language studied by Bakhtin and the French semiotics of Greimas. In the analysis of the texts, we intend to discuss the question related to the materiality of the language used in the short stories, as well as the effects of meaning that this textual choice produces from a new field of description and analysis of the nonverbal. At first, we do not assume the transfer of the nonverbal to the verbal, but we present an instrument to interpret the images. With this study, we aim to find a way to analyze, elaborate meanings and show the relations in the reading of the verbal sign and also of the pictorial text.

"I think it's a gentle kind of marketing" : - A critical discourse analysis of Content Marketing in podcasts.

Ådell, Agnes, Bygdemark, Carina January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate in what way content marketing can be understood through podcasts as an alternative marketing tool. The material which the study was based on is Ölpodden, a podcast initiated by Carlsberg Sweden. The study intended to shed light on the interdiscursivity that emerges when brands are communicated through podcasts. Another aim was to understand how relationships and identities are constructed through the podcast by examining its intended audience. In order to achieve this a critical discourse analysis was used as both underlining theory and comprehensive method. The critical discourse analysis was also supplemented with two theorists witch highlights the audience’s construction of identity. The consumer's thoughts on Ölpodden was of importance to illustrate the convergence culture and the consumption of the podcast. Qualitative interviews were therefore used as a supplement to the critical discourse analysis. The purpose for the study was to contribute to an increased understanding of content marketing and a deeper knowledge of the communicative strategies it is based on. This purpose led to two main research questions containing two subquestions each. The first main question and subqueries were to answer on: How the discourse in Ölpodden could be understood and problematized in relation to convergence, commercialization and consumption culture, which the intended audience are and how groups and identities are created through the discourse. The other main question and subqueries were to answer on: How the discourse could be understood and problematized from a user perspective, in what way the discourse has impact on the listeners subjectivity and objectivity and how the recipients statements answers to a convergence culture. The result of the study indicates that the interdiscursivity in Ölpodden contains an entertainment discourse, a information discourse and a promotional discourse. Through these discourses the podcast aims to give beer a higher status in society. The podcast also creates an identity which the listener is expected to want to fit into. In the quest to fit into this identity individual's consumption patterns can change. Which ultimately would lead to increased gain for large concerns such as Carlsberg.
