Words travel fast : A field study of communication in Ethiopia

Fransson, Louise January 2019 (has links)
The scarce internet access in Ethiopia puts heavy weight on traditional media and people to spread news and information. By testing if the marketing strategy Word of Mouth is applicable on informative content, rather than just brands and products, this thesis explore the motivation to spread news as well as how it is received by a non-internet using group. As with brands, a common trigger for WOM was the subject being brought up in a discussion, both offline and online. Conditions that increased WOM in marketing such as being sociable and feeling a responsibility also increased WOM for more political content. The study also found that there is a low trust for internet as a source, but a high trust for the word of many. If the message was heard multiple times it was more believable, even though a primary source was lacking. In general both internet users and non-internet users were actively spreading information with the reason that it needed to be spread, something that was concluded as a collectivist action where information is spread quickly through social ties. Non-internet users were considered to be extra fragile and exposed to fake news due to the unequal distribution of information and technology. Since trust was based on the message of many, echo chambers and confirmation bias is discussed, as well as how Ethiopia might tackle the segregation of technology in the country in order to decrease inequality in the future.

Community Satisfaction, Community Attachment, Community Experience, Internet Use and Internet Access in Rural Utah Communities

Quarnberg, Tisah M. 07 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This study examines the impact of the Internet on rural community satisfaction, attachment and overall experience. With the geographic dispersion of social networks, the majority of the population has a greater need for long-distance social networking. The Internet has the potential to mitigate distance and connect social networks much faster than letter writing or face-to-face visits. While the Internet is available, to at least some extent, in rural communities in Utah, does it positively affect overall perceptions of community life? This study finds that this is not the case. There is a negative relationship between Internet use and community satisfaction and overall community experience. However, this study also finds that the type of Internet access available within the home has a positive effect on community attachment and overall community experience. The Internet is thus an important element of rural community life and should not be overlooked.

Thus, this research aims to examine the legal nature of Internet access and investigate whether is possible consider it as a new human right related to information technologies. While developing this study result of bibliographic, normative and jurisprudential analysis essential aspects were addressed human rights, Internet s relevance for Human Rights, followed by concluding remarks on access. As a result, it is concluded that the Internet is not just the technical definition of a data transmission network, nor it is only a communication means, it has become a true locus where all men should have the possibility to live and participate in community life. Therefore, the right to Internet access goes beyond the mere access to the necessary infrastructure to get connected, has incorporated access to all content and training or digital literacy. We are dealing with a Human Right, an ideal requirement that every individual and all mankind can be recognized as a person in this new social space / Diante das inúmeras inovações tecnológicas do século XX que atuam diretamente sobre a informação e comunicação, a Internet, em especial, tem influído diretamente sobre o homem e a sociedade, de modo que o acesso à Rede se tornou uma necessidade de nossa época e vem declarado pela ONU como direito humano.

A study of South African computer usersʹ password usage habits and attitude towards password security

Friedman, Brandon January 2014 (has links)
The challenge of having to create and remember a secure password for each user account has become a problem for many computer users and can lead to bad password management practices. Simpler and less secure passwords are often selected and are regularly reused across multiple user accounts. Computer users within corporations and institutions are subject to password policies, policies which require users to create passwords of a specified length and composition and change passwords regularly. These policies often prevent users from reusing previous selected passwords. Security vendors and professionals have sought to improve or even replace password authentication. Technologies such as multi-factor authentication and single sign-on have been developed to complement or even replace password authentication. The objective of the study was to investigate the password habits of South African computer and internet users. The aim was to assess their attitudes toward password security, to determine whether password policies affect the manner in which they manage their passwords and to investigate their exposure to alternate authentication technologies. The results from the online survey demonstrated that password practices of the participants across their professional and personal contexts were generally insecure. Participants often used shorter, simpler and ultimately less secure passwords. Participants would try to memorise all of their passwords or reuse the same password on most of their accounts. Many participants had not received any security awareness training, and additional security technologies (such as multi-factor authentication or password managers) were seldom used or provided to them. The password policies encountered by the participants in their organisations did little towards encouraging the users to apply more secure password practices. Users lack the knowledge and understanding about password security as they had received little or no training pertaining to it.

Competição schumpeteriana e consumidores organizados em rede : uma análise do mercado brasileiro de acesso à internet / Schumpeterian competition and network-organized consumers : an analysis of the Brazilian market for internet access

Pereira, Marcelo de Carvalho, 1966- 03 April 2015 (has links)
Orientadores: David Dequech Filho, Giovanni Dosi / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Economia / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-27T05:29:57Z (GMT). Em particular, demonstra que a configuração vigente nos mercados reais é menos provável sem a concorrência desse fenômeno / Abstract: The objective of the thesis is the study of the effect of consumers organized in social networks on the dynamics of competition among producers in sectors undergoing fast technological change. The focus of research is on the Brazilian market for internet access services in the period 1996-2014. The agent-based, history-friendly computer simulation methodology is applied for this purpose, supported by the theory of complex systems. The central hypothesis is that the ways that consumers of goods and services in constant technological updating interact can be determinants of the dynamics of competition among suppliers. The simulation model is based on neo-Schumpeterian evolutionary theory, together with contemporary institutional theory, particularly on the dynamics of social networks. As will be shown, the empirical results are not adequately explained by any of these theories individually, nor by other usual approaches. Our working hypothesis is that the integration of a dual, co-evolutionary theoretical perspective will allow the proper treatment of the stylized facts coming from the empirical analysis. From this original analysis, which provided a comprehensive overview of the access market situation in Brazil and the world, it was proposed an innovative modeling solution to answer some of the relevant issues on the interrelationship of the competitive dynamics and the consumer behavior in markets with these particular characteristics. The developed model is able to reproduce the main sectoral stylized facts and brings light on the role of consumer networks in the organization of the market. In particular, it demonstrates that the current configuration of real markets is less likely without the contribution of this phenomenon / Doutorado / Teoria Economica / Doutor em Ciências Econômicas

Utilization of electronic library resources in South African Universities of Technology.

Motaung, Tshepo. January 2015 (has links)
M. Tech. Business Information Systems / Having tools and resources that would enhance the performance of the learners would be of huge assistance to learners and their institutions. The increasing use of internet and technology has enhanced and transformed the conventional library resources into electronic resources. Utilizing electronic library resources helps learners to acquire information anytime and anywhere. Institutions that support the use of e-resources save significant amounts of money because the printing of materials are reduced. As a result, the use of e-resources by learners enhances their learning and their performance gets improved. The major objective of this study was to conceptualize a framework that will assist in successful electronic resources utilization. This was encouraged by the fact that the determinants of effective utilization of electronic resources are still not clearly expressed.
