Consistent Inconsistency : The Role of Tension in Explaining Change in Interorganizational Relationships

Alimadadi, Siavash January 2016 (has links)
This thesis commences with the notion that interorganizational exchange relationships are dynamic to an unprecedented degree. It is argued that, global production networks have integrated firms into interdependent structures that blur traditional geographical and organizational boundaries. It is also true that the same networks bring together companies with diverse socio-cultural and economic backgrounds. Thus, the thesis focuses on the complexity of the contemporary international business landscape. The purpose of the work performed was to understand the process of change in interorganizational relationships under these complexities. Through a qualitative study of two main cases and a pilot study, the thesis investigates the networking behavior and the relationship dynamics between multinational companies from Sweden and Turkey, operating in Turkish and Swedish markets, respectively. By examining how firms create, maintain, dissolve and reconstruct their relationships, the thesis contributes to problematizing some of the assumptions that are commonly taken for granted, but which underpin several studies of interorganizational relationship dynamics. The findings illustrate that as recent trends such as cross-border acquisitions frequently perturb the contexts within which firms are embedded, the impact might be favorable for some actors, while others might push for new and different ‘directions’, finding the existing relational arrangements and resource structures counter to their future goals. Yet, the actions of parties are constrained by the structural position in which they find themselves. Thus, the development of an exchange relationship involves multiple processes, often inconsistent with one another, thereby disturbing the stability of the relationship. Through the aggregation of each paper’s contribution, the “Thesis Summary” offers a wide perspective of the relationship dynamics. By incorporating both teleological and dialectical views, the framework proposed captures both the actions undertaken by individual firms to make change, and the structural forces both promoting and opposing change. Ultimately, the thesis offers a framework for investigating the impact of complexity on change in interorganizational relationships, opening doors to an improved understanding of the significance divergent perspectives and disruptive experiences have on relationship change.

Interorganizational Relationships: The Effects of Organizational Efficacy on Member Firm Performance

McDowell, William C. 08 1900 (has links)
Relationships between the collective actors within interorganizational relationships are a growing area of research in management. Interorganizational networks continue to be a popular mechanism used by organizations to achieve greater performance. Organizations develop competencies to work with other organizations, but the confidence of these organizations to use these strengths for a competitive advantage has yet to be empirically examined. The purpose of this study is to examine organizational efficacy, how competencies may related to that efficacy, and the relationship of efficacy with performance. The goal of this study is to observe the relationship among trust, dependence, information quality, continuous quality improvement, and supplier flexibility with organizational efficacy. In addition, the relationship between organizational efficacy and performance is also observed. There are two primary research questions driving this study. First, what is the relationship between trust, dependence, information quality, continuous quality improvement, supplier flexibility and organizational efficacy? Second, what is the relationship between organizational efficacy and performance? The theories supporting the hypotheses generated from these questions include theories such as social cognitive theory, quality improvement, and path-goal theory. Data collected from the suppliers of a large university support the hypotheses. Regression analysis and structure coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results indicate that both research question one and research question two are supported. In addition, the theoretical model as a whole, which indicates a mediating relationship, was examined and discussed. This study contributes to both academic and practice by examining efficacy in an interorganizational setting. In addition, as organizations better understand the relationship between competencies and confidence, they will better know how to collectively work to achieve greater results with more attention being placed on monitoring the relationship in order to experience more desired outcomes. Limitations of the current study and opportunities for future research are also discussed.

Reck, Angelo Brambila January 2015 (has links)
The poultry production is an important source of protein in human food. The understanding of interorganizational relationship in this environment is essential to reduce operating and transaction costs. This study aimed to construct a multi-criteria evaluation model of the relationship between the agro-industry JBS S. A. and yours integrated farmer in the city of Seara, Santa Catarina, assessing the possible effects on the competitiveness of the supply chain. A case study was conducted by the theoretical approach to supply chain management, complemented by microanalytical approaches the transaction costs economics (TCE) and competitive strategies. We conducted quanti-qualitative research and used the multi-criteria analysis methodology of decision support (MCDA) for the construction and interpretation of the model. We used instrument and carried out interviews with farmers, agro-industry representatives and poultry specialists. The agents defined cost production, compensation, factors of production, investment risk, information flow and institutional environment as the fundamental points of view (FPV) model. It was found with the application of the model in three classes of farmers that FPVs remuneration, investment risk, downstream flow of information supply chain and cost production, had greater impact on interorganizational relationship to achieve competitiveness in chain.

This study concerns Federated Cooperative Networks governance, a specific Interorganizational Relationship (IOR) typology. Motivated by a theoretical gap in this subject, we sought to identify the elements forming the Federated Cooperative Networks governance system and how they can be designed to reduce conflicts and agency costs in Federations. It was noticed that studies describing and analyzing internal IORs governance elements do not approach separation of ownership from control, characteristic of Federated Cooperative Networks. Authors who discuss separation of ownership from control don’t show the internal elements of IOR governance. And the studies don’t discuss how the internal governance elements (governance structure and mechanisms) might be combined to minimize conflicts and agency costs either. Based on the Agency Theory, Representation Theory and Organizational Theory employed in IORs context, we have proposed three elements for the Federated Cooperative Networks governance system: (a) a governance structure; (b) governance mechanisms instituted to encourage and control the behavior of agents; (c) governance mechanisms instituted to encourage and control the behavior of principals. For the empirical validation of these elements, we have chosen to perform a qualitative study, of exploratory nature, through the multiple case study method. The study was operated through two case studies: one at Rede Âncora Brasil and the other at Rede Construir. The results allow us to assert that, although present, structural elements and governance mechanisms over principals and agents show distinct features. On one extreme, there is a Federation with a higher level of decision instances, a higher number of activities developed by the Federation, which tend to lead to more centralization, formalization, standardization, coordination and control. On the other extreme, a Federation with little decision instances, and a lower number of activities developed by the Federation, which tend to lead to decentralization, less formalization, standardization, coordination and control. The empirical study added the element representation and participation in the Federated Cooperative Networks governance structure. The internal and external governance mechanisms, widely employed in corporations, were also identified in the Federated Cooperative Networks context. However, we have found that the Administrative Council, or corresponding agency, is the most effective mechanism in reducing agency costs and conflicts. Among the theoretical contributions of the study, adopting a new perspective in the concept of Federated Cooperative Networks governance under the light of the Agency theory can be stressed.

Sport Sponsorship : Managing the relationship between a sponsor and a sponsee

Lilja, Veronica, Isacsson, Karin January 2017 (has links)
Sports sponsorship accounts for the majority of global sponsorship revenue and is a mutually beneficial business relationship between two parties -the sponsor and the sponsee. The most successful sports sponsorships are based on a good relationship between the sports entity and its sponsor, however, the relationship between the sponsor and the sponsee is difficult to understand due to the lack oftheoretical and managerial implications of the area. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of how sport entities and their existing sponsors manage their interorganizational relationship. In order to reach the stated purpose, research questions are derived focusing on the exchange and the maintenance of the sport sponsor relationship. Based on the research questions, an extensive literature review is conducted landing in a proposed conceptual framework. A qualitative case study approach is used to collect data through semi-structured interviews with two national and two international professional sports organizations. The result of the study shows how the existing relationship between sports organizations and their sponsors is managed. The most valued aspect in a sport sponsorship relationship is to develop a long-term partnership and that the parties involved are committed to the relationship and work actively to make it mutually beneficial. The sponsors are for the most partincluded in the activities of the sport entity, which posits high-quality communication as an essential tool in maintaining a successful relationship. In order to maximize the value generated from the offered benefits, the partners must be willing to utilize the full potential in participating in the sport entity’s various activities.

Unknown Date (has links)

Dating for innovation : recognizing and creating opportunities in fluid environments through collaborative interorganizational relationships

Marshall, Cassandra January 2004 (has links)
Both practice and theory present good reason to believe that collaborative interorganizational relationships have become particularly important for innovation and new product development in industries characterized by rapid technological change and dynamic competition. Even though collaboration across organizational boundaries represents an important change in the way companies innovate and develop new products (services and processes), it appears as if the process and practical steps of such arrangements are scantly explored.   The thesis Dating for Innovation addresses this gap by empirically studying a focal company’s attempts to bring new opportunities into the world through collaborative interorganizational relationships under conditions marked by fluid change. A diverse set of research methods ranging from an insider action research approach to more conventional case study methods were applied to shed light on contingencies that may play a role in influencing the process and practical steps.   The result suggests an explorative logic and process, where the partners make use of interorganizational relationships as a means to explore the knowledge necessary for creating, recognizing, and, eventually, developing future opportunities. Not only interest and continued motivation, but also calculated costs and perceived risks, were thus outcomes of the collaboration rather than prescribed beforehand. Furthermore, the empirical findings suggest that corporate entrepreneurs at lower levels in the organization have a more significant influence than previously assumed. From a general point of view, these results imply that parts of the process can be facilitated, but not all initiatives or activities can be directed. Managers are thus challenged to reflect on how to productively deal with interorganizational innovation activities without adapting a classical linear and/or hierarchical monitoring of interorganizational innovation initiatives. / Diss. 移動彈性與組織間關係策略之研究 / A study of mobility of flexibility and interorganizational relationship strategy

Chang, Chao Ching Unknown Date (has links)
Managing the transaction relationships with the key supplier is a critical decision related to vertical integration. The previous literature suggest that a firm can achieve the strategic benefits such as reducing operation cost and focusing on organizational core competence through outsourcing, while maintaining a close cooperative relationship with the key supplier who provides essential key factors such as key components or key material. However, focal firm may also hold-up by the key supplier when it over-dependent on the opposite site. Therefore, the practical puzzle is how to maintain flexibility of relationships in vertical transactions as well as to avoid hold-up by specific key supplier and to extend the transaction stability with the key supplier. Standing the view of focal buyer, the study explores two related questions: how to avoid hold-up problem in an asymmetric buyer-supplier transactions, and, in the ex post transaction, how to increase relational flexibility in highly interdependence situation. The dyadic transactions between focal firm and its key supplier are the units of our analysis to confer with the managerial mechanism of key supplier relationship. The study conducted interviews dozens of Taiwanese firm as case studies. We model an exploration-exploitation framework adopted by focal firm adapt to ex post asymmetric interorganizational relationships. Thus we see two behavioral mechanisms: reducing key suppliers’ mobility of flexibility through relational exploitation as well as exploration on transaction value and relationship for reinforcing interdependency in dyadic transactions, and, increasing focal firms’ mobility of flexibility through structural exploration as well as transaction value exploitation so as to diminish the dependency on the key supplier and heighten alternatives to cooperate with. Using structure equation modeling approach, research hypotheses are tested on a sample of 250 focal firms established in Taiwan. We found the positive relationships between focal firms’ mobility of flexibility and cooperative performance perceived by focal firm, and, the negative relationships between key suppliers’ mobility of flexibility and cooperative performance perceived by focal firm. Empirical results confirmed the negative relationships between key suppliers’ mobility of flexibility and focal firm’s exploitation in relationship and transaction value as well as relationship exploration. The positive relationships between focal firms’ mobility of flexibility as well as structural exploration and transactional exploitation were also supported. The study develop a theoretical extension based on the transaction cost theory, resource dependence theory, and the behavioral theory of firm. We also address dyadic mobility of flexibility as the decision criterion for balancing exploration and exploitation in the interorganizational relationship. These findings provide theoretical and managerial implications for vertical coordination in supplier relationship management in particular.
