The Teacher’s Skills – Liberal Education and Reflected Experience is a case study of the practical skills of teachers, in which the responsible action is central. This is an action which, while informed by science, cannot be fully determined by it, since the circumstances that relate to the interaction between teacher and students cannot always be fully predicted. With Liberal Education, reflection on experience, and trained intuition, the teacher bridges the gap between scientific knowledge and the unforeseen and immediate demands of the situation. The role of Liberal Education in this ambition cannot be overestimated. To be a part of such a practice is to dedicate one’s life to a struggle with language. Therefore, insights into the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language, as well as analogies with literature and other professional fields, help us examine the glasses through which we observe and interpret reality in order gain greater knowledge. It is in the reflective dialogue, where we meet others with whom we are not always in agreement, that we can see ourselves, our knowledge and our prejudices. The interpretation and re-interpretation of our experience in the light of the experience of others is the bridge across which we can escape from our imprisonment on the island of convenience. Once the teacher has developed a consistency in his actions, his skills can be acknowledged. When these skills are raised to the level of a style, they become an art. The main purpose of this case study is to describe the teacher’s skills; how it can be developed, and the conditions required for its assessment. A possible assumption is that reflection on our own experience and the experience of others can give us insights into ourselves, an essential prerequisite to striking the spark that motivates the investment of time and resources in the development of one’s skills as a teacher / QC 20100706

We insist upon “green space”, but the term’s vague cast brings little into focus. In this thesis I search out what it is that we look for in green space. I consider some ways, within our North American context, that we interact with it, represent it, speak about it and write about it. Drawing together evidence from a diverse range of sources in myth and mapping, poetry, classical philosophy, feminist theory, language, and personal experience, I find enigmatic but persistent geometries of desire binding us to the notion of green space. These desires for green space manifest themselves in relationships of practical dependence, imaginative dependence, violence, and love. But most of all green space is at work, wherever it emerges, at the core of our becoming-other.

Omvalet : En studie kring orsaker och påverkande faktorer för elever som gör omval på gymnasiet

The reason why this study has been made is the fact that a substantial part of students in the upper secondary school changes their field of study, during or after their first year. The aim of this study is to find out the reasons behind such changes as well as finding out the affecting factors. The study has been made in two steps, first quantitatively by a poll study and the second step is qualitative by interviews. This research has been made in both private schools and municipal schools, with the ambition to search for differences between these two separate school forms. The study shows that no general differences can be found in a comparison between them. This whole study takes its viewpoint in a Social constructivistic perspective with influences from structuralism and interculturalism. The result of this study shows that the reasons that are most significant for the students who change their field of study are general discomfort with their first choice, as well as discomfort with their teachers and school friends. A to rapid study pace is also a major reason for changes The factors that have had most impact on the students are social factors like family, friends and educational guidance, and their personal feeling or intuition. In this research, comparisons between ethnicity, social status and sex have been made to reveal patterns and reasons which could have an effect on students when changing their field of study.

Prospective Duration Judgments: The Role Of Attention And Secondary Tasks

It is known that concurrent secondary tasks or attentionally salient stimuli shorten reproduced temporal durations. The main aim of this thesis is to use three types of secondary tasks to see their effects on duration judgments. The Attentional Gate Model (Block &amp / Zakay, 2006) served as theoretical background for a series of 4 experiments. There were 2 baseline/control experiments for studying the effect of 2 different and novel secondary tasks which are temporal comparison and non-temporal executive tasks. Three duration lengths (short-moderate-long) were used (15, 30 and 45 sec) that subjects had to reproduce. In Exp-1 (control experiment for Exp-2) subjects had to reproduce almost empty time intervals. Exp-2, which investigated the role of a secondary temporal task, revealed significantly decreased reproduced durations as compared to Exp-1 which is in line with our hypothesis. In Exp-3 (control experiment for Exp-4) subjects carried out a non-temporal/non-executive secondary task. Exp-4, in which a Simon task was used as a non-temporal executive secondary task, resulted in significantly decreased reproduced durations as compared to Exp-3 as well. Moreover, duration length effects were found for all experiments that included an attention consuming secondary tasks (Exp-2-3-4), i.e., longer durations were more underestimated than shorter ones in the presence of attention demanding tasks. We conclude that secondary temporal tasks and even more so executive non-temporal tasks can lead to decreased temporal duration judgements, thus affecting subjects&rsquo / time perception, in line with the Attentional Gate Model.

Effects Of External And Self-controlled Feedback Schedule On Retention Of Anticipation Timing And Ball Throwing Task

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the feedback schedule controlled by the learner created an optimal environment for retention of motor skills. Two experiments were conducted and participants were randomly assigned to a Control (100% KR), 20% RF KR, Self-controlled and Yoked conditions. In experiment one an anticipation timing task and in experiment two a ball throwing task was used. The second experiment also included a transfer test in order to measure the persistence of the acquired capability for performance. Absolute constant error (&amp / #9474 / CE&amp / #9474 / ) and variable error (VE) were calculated for four blocks of ten trials in acquisition phase and two blocks of ten trials in retention and transfer phases to analyze the subject&rsquo / s performances by repeated measures ANOVA. Experiment one analysis indicated significant main effects for groups in &amp / #9474 / CE&amp / #9474 / and VE. Participants in the self-controlled condition performed significantly better on retention test than the control group. Contrary to the expectations, experiment two analysis showed no significant differences between the groups in acquisition and retention tests. Group differences were only observed in transfer test between the 20% RF KR and Yoked conditions. There was an improvement in the performance by groups as they progressed through the acquisition trials. The results of the experiment were not consistent with regard to effects of KR on learning. The reasons might be attributed to several factors such as the age and the motivation of the subjects, and the nature of the task.

Activating simultaneity in performance : exploring Robert Lepage's working principles in the making of Gaijin

In this research I have explored the performance making process of world renowned director Robert Lepage. This exploration informed my own process, creating an original performance called GAIJIN, where my roles included producer / director / designer and co-writer. The practice-led research strategy employed in this research has allowed me to navigate the sometimes slippery slope of connecting various performance discourses with the pragmatics of the performance making process. The reason for this research is my strong interest in the director’s role and my affinity with the practice of Robert Lepage. My observation of the performance making process of Robert Lepage prompted the creation of a conceptual framework informed by Hans-Thies Lehmann’s work Postdramatic Theatre. These theoretical concerns were then further investigated in the creation of my own show. This research process has uncovered a performance making process that foregrounds the working principles of simultaneity and synaesthesia, which together offer a changed conception of the performance text in live performance. Simultaneity is a space of chaotic interaction where many resources are used to build a perpetually evolving performance text. Synaesthesia is the type of navigation required – an engagement consisting of interrelated sense-impressions that uniquely connect the performance makers with the abundance of content and stimulus; they search for poetic connections and harmonious movement between the resources. This engagement relies on intuitive playmaking where the artists must exhibit restraint and reserve to privilege the interaction of resources and observe the emerging performance. This process has the potential to create a performance that is built by referential layers of theatrical signifiers and impressions. This research offers an insight into the practices of Robert Lepage as well as a lens through which to view other unique devising processes. It also offers a performance making language that is worthy of consideration by all performance makers, from directors to performers. The significance of this process is its inherent qualities of innovation produced by all manner of art forms and resources interacting in a unique performance making space.

Artificial Intelligence : An approach for decision-making in crisis management

The interest in crisis management is increasing for some decades now, since researchers and organizations have realized that crises can endanger them severely and that all kinds of organization are potentially under the constant threat of crises. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also in the heart of the attention as some tasks, traditionally occupied by humans, are already replaced by AI agents, and the fast development achieves more and more promising results. As the core of AI, decision-making has been identified, which itself can also completely change the outcome of a crisis. Thus, the idea to explore the junction of these two fields in the light of decision-making processes appeared to be highly inter-esting. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is: first, to find out what is really important in deci-sion-making processes in crisis management, second, to figure out abilities and limita-tions for human and artificial intelligences, and lastly, how artificial intelligence can af-fect important characteristics of decision-making processes in a foreseeable period of time. Putting all together led to the research question: How artificial intelligence can affect decision-making processes in crisis management? To guide these efforts, a qualitative method with an interpretivist approach has been cho-sen. Therefore, crisis experts (managers and consultants) and AI experts (researchers and developers) were interviewed. Also, notes were taken from a conference about artificial intelligence. As a result, it has been found out that speed and comprehensiveness are two crucial fac-tors when making decisions in crisis situations. Additionally, empirical findings figured out that this approach needs to be extended by the two decision parameters short- and long-term effect as it is not just about decision-making itself, but also about the feasibility and future consequences of decisions made. A model for ‘successful decision-making in crisis situations’ could be developed and the roles of intuition and rationality as well as abilities and limitations were clarified for both, human and artificial intelligence. Based on this understanding, artificial and human intelligence could have been placed within our model, showing the complement nature of them. Finally, an exploratory an-swer to the research question could be derived, presented as short-, medium-, and long-term perspectives. Even though crisis management can be expected to be one of the last organizational fields invested by AI, the results show that there are great benefits of ap-plying AI in crisis management, leading in a high potential that AI will change the picture dramatically.

[pt] O modernismo brasileiro da década de 1920 teve várias vertentes que, ao mesmo tempo em que constituiram-no como um fenômeno rico em possibilidades de interpretação, tornaram difícil a tarefa de defini-lo de modo unitário. Plínio Salgado foi um dos principais integrantes do verde- amarelismo, uma vertente modernista que produziu um debate com o grupo de Mário de Andrade. Em sua produção literária e ensaística, o autor em questão destaca a importância do caráter intuitivo na busca empreendida para a constituição da nacionalidade brasileira. E, desse modo, aproxima-se de uma concepção objetiva da realidade nacional que pode ser entendida através da retórica em seus moldes clássicos. / [en] The Brazilian modernism of the 1920`s had many branches which, at the same time constituted a profitable phenomenon in terms of interpretation possibilities, have made harsh the task of defining it in an unique fashion. Plínio Salgado was one of the main figures of the verde-amarelismo, a modernist stem which got entangled in a debate with Mario de Andrade`s group. In his literary and essayistic work, the author fore mentioned emphasizes the importance of the intuitive nature in the quest for Brazilian nationality constitution. So, therefore, gets closer to an objective conception of the national reality which might be understood through rhetoric in its classical forms.
