Synthesis, characterization, and photophysics of symmetric and unsymmetric -NHC pincer platinum halide complexes and derivatives

Zhang, Min 14 December 2018 (has links)
A series of 24 new photoluminescent symmetric and unsymmetric -NHC pincer Pt complexes was synthesized and characterized, including collection of their 195Pt NMR chemical shifts. In total 18 new X-ray crystal structures, and photophysical studies of these photoluminescent -NHC pincer Pt complexes are reported. -NHC pincer Pt complexes were synthesized and characterized using new -NHC pincer based proligands [(RChetChetCRH3)X2, X = Cl, Br, or BPh4, where het represents imidazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and 1,2,4-triazolyl moieties; R = n-butyl, 3,3-dimethylbutyl, n-hexyl] as starting materials. A new method to synthesize Pt-Cl complexes to prevent halogen mixing was developed using tetraphenylborate salts as proligands. -NHC pincer complexes Pt(II) were oxidized to Pt(IV) complexes by reaction with Br2, I2, or iodobenzene dichloride. Photophysical studies showed emission of blue to red-orange color range for the Pt(II) complexes when irradiated with long wavelength UV light (360 nm). No visible emission for Pt(IV) complexes was observed upon irradiation at 360 nm. The tunable photoluminescence of the synthesized -NHC pincer Pt(II) complexes can be used as the materials for OLEDs. Parameters and scales that provide understanding of steric and electronic effects are essential to predicting properties, and, therefore, to systematically designing new ligands. Meridional tridentate pincer ligands are neither conveniently nor accurately described by existing options. A scale has been developed based on 195Pt NMR chemical shift that is reflective of the total donor ability of a multi-dentate ligand in a square planar complex and that does not suffer from cis/trans stereochemical issues. This scale, Platinum Electronic Parameter (PtEP) and defined as PtEP = -(195Pt NMR shift) in CDCl3 revealed significant deviations of -NHC pincer ligands, PCP and POCOP donor abilities from predicted extrapolations using existing TEP parameters. This initial data set demonstrates the applicability and broad potential of the PtEP scale.

The relevance of age at first alcohol and nicotine use for initiation of cannabis use and progression to cannabis use disorders

Behrendt, Silke, Beesdo-Baum, Katja, Höfler, Michael, Perkonigg, Axel, Bühringer, Gerhard, Lieb, Roselind, Wittchen, Hans-Ulrich January 2012 (has links)
Background: A younger age at onset of use of a specific substance is a well-documented risk-factor for a substance use disorder (SUD) related to that specific substance. However, the cross-substance relationship between a younger age at onset of alcohol use (AU) and nicotine use (NU) and the risk of cannabis use disorders (CUD) in adolescence and early adulthood remains unclear. Aims: To identify the sequence of and latency between initial AU/NU and initial cannabis use (CU). To investigate whether younger age at AU- and NU-onset is associated with any and earlier CU-onset and a higher risk of transition from first CU to CUD, taking into account externalizing disorders (ED) and parental substance use disorders as putative influential factors. Methods: Prospective-longitudinal community study with N = 3021 subjects (baseline age 14–24) and up to four assessment waves over up to ten years with additional direct parental and family history information. Substance use and CUD were assessed with the DSM-IV/M-CIDI. Results: Most subjects with CU reported AU (99%) and NU (94%). Among users of both substances, 93% reported AU prior to CU (87% for NU). After adjustment for ED and parental substance use disorders younger age at AU-onset was associated with any CU. Younger age at NU-onset was associated with earlier CU initiation. Younger age at AU- and NU-onset was not associated with a higher risk of CUD. Conclusions: The cross-substance relevance of younger age at first AU and NU for the risk of CUD is limited to early CU involvement.

La Orestíada a través de Peter Stein: la importancia de la memoria cultural en la puesta en escena de una tragedia griega en Alemania de 1980

Mercado Heudebert, Micaela 07 July 2020 (has links)

The Sustainability of Lean Manufacturing as a Competitive Advantage

Jones, Louis G. 10 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Since the early 1990s lean manufacturing has been employed by companies looking to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and improve quality. Academic studies of the financial benefits of lean manufacturing are mixed in their results, where some show benefit and others do not. The objective of the current work was to confirm a financial benefit of lean manufacturing, while also establishing whether such a financial advantage was sustainable. Financial data was collected for a large number of companies in the manufacturing sector, over the period from 1990 to 2010. The data were used to show correlation between inventory turns and return on assets (ROA), where turns were a measure of the leanness of a firm or an industry. A positive correlation between turns and ROA showed evidence of financial benefit from lean implementation, confirming previous results from a smaller-scale study. It was then shown that about 45% of firms studied had a competitive advantage that could be attributed to their level of leanness. Firms with a competitive advantage were compared to peer companies and it was found that about 60% are able to sustain their competitive advantage for more than 10 years.
