ViVaVostok ist ein Projekt der Robert-Bosch-Stiftung und der Stiftung Internationale Jugendbibliothek zur Förderung osteuropäischer Kinder- und Jugendliteratur. Die Autorinnen und Autoren lesen aus ihren bisher nicht übersetzten Werken eine Kostprobe im Original, danach werden eigens für die Veranstaltungen ins Deutsche übersetzte Kapitel vorgetragen. Anschließend sollen Autoren und Publikum mit Hilfe eines Dolmetschers ins Gespräch kommen.

The purpose with this study is to examine the description of native Americans in two novels, Old Surehand part 1 and 2 by the German author Karl May. By using a postcolonial theory, descriptions of people from different Native American nations have been studied, to see how these are portrayed by May and if there are any differences between the descriptions of different nations. The results of this study have shown that the descriptions differ between different native American nations. The Apache are positively defined, and the narrated picturesare clearly influenced by the description of the figure Winnetou, the chief of the Apache and a good friend to the main character Old Shatterhand. Other nations can be narrated as enemies and as warlike. They become however more positively pictured when they create a contact with and befriend Old Shatterhand, where the Comanche Nation can be seen as such an example. The descriptions of the native Americans are focused on their looks and appearance,as well as their traits and qualities, and are often rendered stereotyped. Finally, it becomes clear that a postcolonial perspective emerges, in which characters aredivided into “the own” and “the others”. However, it is not uncommon for the maincharacter Old Shatterhand, to have a seemingly positive bias in reaching out to the Native Americans. When that occurs, he is actually acting against a post-colonial stance.

A Transnational Study: Young Adult Literature Exchanged Between the US and Germany

Both young adult literature and transnational literature occupy transitional spaces and defy simple classifications. Their commonalities naturally suit the two sets of literature for concurrent study. However, the field is underdeveloped, particularly in the United States. With a concentration on the exchanges taking place between the U.S. and Germany, this thesis addresses the need to assemble primary materials and pertinent critical commentary into a single place available to educators, scholars, and researchers to acquire background on transnational YAL themes. The thesis delineates methods used in conducting and compiling research on U.S.-German YAL exchange and highlights the translation and publication concerns associated with this process. It examines how prizes for translations are granted in each nation, identifying organizations that facilitate the process of exchange and describing transnational trends rising out of these circumstances. The concluding chapter visits concerns and complications raised during the investigation, posing questions for further study of the U.S.-German young adult literature relationship and advocating the pursuit of similar research in other world regions. The appendices provide sites for continued examination. They include lists of award-winning translations available in the U.S., novels by American authors that have been translated and published in Germany, and novels by German-language authors that have been translated and published in the U.S.
