The formation of health workers of correctional system: cartografhy of knowledge and practices

Rita de CÃssia Moura Diniz 27 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis analyses the âeducationalâ background of the correctional systemâs health field professionals. To facilitate the evaluation, this study divided their formation in four categories: formal, informal, offered by the correctional system or searched by the own professional. It also exposes the difficulties in analyzing informal experiences in order to propose a formal âeducationâ capable to provide the professional development they need and also accomplish the correctional system main goal: the inmateâs return to the community. The main goals of this study are: to do an evaluative research of the Cearà stateâs correctional system professionalsâ formal or informal formation and its interface with the inmate re-socialization, aiming at proposing principles and themes which integrates both formations; to evaluate the professionalsâ background by identifying the informal curricular elements and is interface with the inmate re-socialization; to elaborate a cartography of knowledge and practices using the professionalsâ experiences, as well as to propose a thematic matrix which continued formation of re-socializing professionals; and, at last, to propose a method to evaluate the correctional systemâs health field professionalsâ formation. This study states the following thesis: the knowledge and practices experimented by the Cearà stateâs correctional system professionals, acquired from a graduated education or not, can be redefined and added by using a curricular matrix with methods to make possible the inmatesâ re-socialization. The analytical study used a dialectic approach methodology. Statistical cross-data analysis was done to find correlations in the more than 1327 courses done by the professionals. Interviews, documental analysis, conceptual chart, and field diary were the methodologies used to acquire data. The analysisâ result showed that the professionalsâ formation is inadequate to the nature of their work. It was presented a proposal of a formalized continued education. The knowledge and practices cartography showed that all the professionalsâ knowledge and practices were acquired by himself and through the interaction professional-professional and professional-inmate, therefore, evidencing an informal education. It was presented a method to evaluate the correctional systemâs health field professionalsâ formation

Utilisation of Social Media tools to enhance knowledge sharing practices among knowledge workers at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha, Tanzania

Schutte, Marietjie January 2013 (has links)
It is vital for knowledge workers to utilise social media tools to enhance knowledge sharing practices and the adoption of these collaborative tools in higher learning institutions. This study investigated the extent to which social media tools are utilised to enhance knowledge sharing practices among knowledge workers at Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The study conducted semi-structured interview with the NM-AIST library staff and Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre (ICT-RC) personnel in 2014. The study found that, the utilisation of social media tools to enhance knowledge sharing among knowledge workers is still in its early stages in higher learning institutions in Tanzania. However, there was much interest amongst respondents for integrating and utilising social media tools to support knowledge sharing in higher learning institutions. The findings indicated that: social media tools can be used to enhance knowledge sharing practices; however, face to face mechanism, Google Mail, and Google Drive were indicated as main mechanisms to enhance knowledge sharing practices in higher learning institutions. Knowledge workers at the NM-AIST shared knowledge to facilitate teaching and learning activities, research and innovation; however knowledge sharing practices occur when needs arise. The study revealed the lack of knowledge sharing culture documented at the NM-AIST. The study has recommended the following: proper training for knowledge workers, employment of skilled and experienced knowledge workers, provision of full support (motivation), provide support to individual users. Application of social media tools which are very familiar and simple to use, establishment of a good relationship between knowledge workers and the management, as well as with schools and departments in higher learning institutions. Additionally, the study recommends the provision of adequate social media tools to facilitate knowledge diffusion within institutions. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Assessing the Knowledge and Practices regarding eye care and complications of Diabetes among Diabetic Patients 18 years and older, attending a tertiary Diabetic Clinic in Kampala, Uganda

Hope, Mackline 06 May 2020 (has links)
Purpose The aim of this study was to audit the knowledge and practices regarding eye care and eye complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) among diabetic patients 18 years and above in Kampala, Uganda. Methods. A cross-sectional study was done to collect data on the demographics, level of awareness and practices of the 409 diabetic patients regarding eye care and eye complications of DM. Data collected was captured in EPIDATA version 3.1, exported to STATA version 15.0 for further management and analysis. Participants characteristics were summarized using summary statistics and graphs. Using a standard questionnaire, scores for knowledge and practice for diabetes; knowledge and practice on diabetic retinopathy were generated and in all the four scores aforesaid, participants were classified as having good or poor knowledge and practice1. Proportions of participants demonstrating good awareness and good practice were reported. Fishers and Pearson chi- square tests were used to test for associations between patient’s characteristics and knowledge and practice on DM. Bivariable and logistic regression analysis was performed and variables with a p-value of < 0.2 of the unadjusted odds ratio were further analyzed at multivariate logistic regression analysis to find out factors that significantly predict patient’s knowledge and practice on diabetes mellitus. Results. A total of 409 participants were interviewed in the study, majority were females 293 (71.6%) and mean age (SD) was 50 (12) years. A high proportion of participants 314 (76.9%) was aware that DM could affect the eyes but only 24 (5.9%) stated diabetic retinopathy as an eye complication in diabetic patients. Good knowledge about diabetes mellitus was demonstrated by 178 (43.5%) of the study participants. However, only 33.3% had good knowledge on eye care and diabetic retinopathy. It was determined that female diabetic patients and those who stayed with DM for 10 years and beyond were less likely to have good practice on DM compared to male patients and those who had been with DM for less than five years (OR, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.36-0.95, P=0.029: OR, 95% CI: 0.53, 0.32-0.87, P=0.011). It was also found that diabetic patients with good knowledge of DM were at least three times more likely to have good practice compared to those with the poor knowledge (OR, 95% CI: 3.2, 2.1 -4.8, P <0.001). Conclusion Lack of knowledge regarding the importance and need for periodic eye check-up for diabetic retinopathy was a significant finding in his study. Good knowledge on diabetes, gender and duration of DM had significant association with the patients practice patterns.

The quality of knowledge management practices and success factors in Malawian non-governmental organisations

Makota, Ennie 17 January 2017 (has links)
This study aims to identify the quality of knowledge management practices and success factors of non-governmental organisations in Malawi, and their influence on the knowledge management process. A questionnaire-based survey is used to establish the knowledge management practices being implemented and the extent to which they are being followed through on. A statistical-based analysis enabled the researcher to determine the influence of these practices on knowledge management processes. Results suggest an unbalanced pursuit of knowledge management practices in Malawian non-governmental organisations, which are oriented towards the knowledge generation process but fall short in knowledge application activities. This study contributes to strategy formulation and decision making in respect of adopting and investing in knowledge management initiatives in the non-profit sector. More importantly, it joins the debate on identification of appropriate practices which effectively address organisational needs. Data is limited to non-governmental organisations in Malawi; therefore, findings may be tied to a specific geographical location / School of Computing / M.Sc. (Computing)

Among the classification system that has been proposed by literature, a strategic environmental management system is the most advantageous for the organization considering that it assists in responding to environmental challenges and can provide sustainable strategic advantages. The Environmental Department positioning is crucial on influencing the strategic environmental management within the company. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate if Environmental Departments of companies are developing environmental management in a strategic approach. For this purpose, a data collection instrument was developed, called Environmental Radar, which seeks to analyze if the Dynamic Capabilities are being developed throughout the investigation of knowledge management practices that support this process. The model was based on existing evaluation methodologies, adapted to the environmental management reality and it is organized according to the four growth challenges: (i) Recognizing Opportunities, (ii) Capturing Opportunities, (iii) Implementing Opportunities and (iv) Managing Growth. The Environmental Radar was applied in four companies and, therefore, it was possible to identify which practices are executed systematically, which occur in an isolated way and also those that are not performed by the participants. In addition, some practices not suggested initially by the Environmental Radar, but that complemented its objectives, has been detected, “Recognizing Opportunities” has revealed to be the challenge that concentrated the most practices performed systematically by the companies studied and “Implementing Opportunities” was the one with lesser adherence. The practices chosen, that make up the Environmental Radar, also allowed to investigate the strategic environmental management approach, as a source of competitive advantage for the company, because it analyzes "what to do", being the "how to do" detailed by the organization. That is, it became possible to conduct investigations in a standardized manner, but respecting and identifying the individualities and particularities of each case. In this way, the tool has proved to be effective not only on evaluating the practices performed by the company, but also serving as a basis for its recognition of the importance of the behavior of the Environment Department that leads to strategic environmental management.

The teacher who starts his or her literacy career usually faces large classrooms and needs to deal with students who have different knowledge and experience, and some students often have difficulties in acquiring reading and writing and need interventions adjusted to their real needs. The present research proposes an investigation into the challenges faced by newly trained literacy teachers, based on the following problem: what challenges does a newly trained teacher face in a literacy room, in interaction with the knowledge and practices of their literacy practice? We have developed a literature review on teacher education, Pedagogy, Literacy/Literacy and Training Policies for literacy students, with the following theoretical main references: Tardif (2014); Nóvoa, 2009; Gatti and Barreto (2009); Saviani (2005; 2008); Libâneo (2006; 2010; 2012); Pimenta (2012); Franco (2003; 2005; 2012); Bahia (2016); Gatti (2010; 2013; 2014); Gatti, Barreto and André (2011); Monteiro (2014); Mortatti (2000, 2006); Albuquerque (2007); Ferreiro and Teberosky (1985) and Teberosky (1997). We conducted a field research, with the participation of five literacy teachers from the public school of Santo André. The instruments for the data collection and analysis were composed of a questionnaire to delineate the profile of the subjects and conduct deepening interviews. The data analysis of the interviews is based on the Content Analysis Methodology, proposed by Franco (2003). The analyzed categories considered self-presentation and career choice; initial and continuing training/knowledge; literacy-theories and practices; the internship as a pedagogical practice, as well as the attributions that mark and define the constitution of the newly formed teacher-literate identity. Regarding the challenges, we observe as results: weak initial training that distances the theory of practice; classrooms crowded with students; gaps in supervision; curriculum with more emphasis on theories than on literacy practices/ methodologies; lack of planning or even of a political pedagogical project that guides the newly trained teacher-literate in his/her work; besides the discontinuation of the policies of continuous formation.

Indeed, I tried to develop a sociological approach about a web of relations that define the profession of traditional midwives resorting to a methodological tool from ethnography. To set out on this ethnographic adventure I took as a basic assumption the thesis that the job of helping delivery implies an interaction process of “midwife and parturient” that includes partnership, female solidarity, power struggle, respect and leadership that add to this relation a complex web of feelings for the sharing of life and culture. My analysis posts knowledge and practices, as seen by the performance of traditional midwives from Mazagao, within peculiar sociability forms in traditional communities in the Amazon basin in order to grasp the meaning of multiple converging elements produced by knowledge and practices of women from the region. In this investigation I tried to unveil the web of meanings that involves the traditional practice of midwives from Mazagao within conflicting dynamics of meanings found in their knowledge/practices considering that within a given political context those practices and the web that they form go through changes and adjustments according to intervention programs of the State that sometimes have punctual and temporary aspects that impact the informal webs.
