Contamination des calanques par les micropolluants organiques (Cortiou) zone côtière de Marseille, France / Organic micro-pollutant contamination in calanques (Cortiou creek), coastal area of Marseilles, France

Umasangaji, Halikuddin 19 December 2018 (has links)
Due to their persistence and the toxicological point of view, the remnants of these organic contaminants, which can be detected in the different environmental matrices (water, sediment, air and biota), sometimes with very low concentration (micropollutants), has gained the public attention. This study aims to determine the concentration levels of selected contaminants in surficial sediments and identifying the source of these chemicals in Cortiou Creek. The results showed high contamination by hydrocarbons in the studied area. Additionally, these results probably reflected that biodegradation processes occurred concomitantly with a chronic apportionment of untreated sewage loading. These organic pollutants also confirmed an adverse effect for marine biota and more particularly for benthic communities for some stations

Diseño incremental de e-servicios: estudio teórico, propuesta metodológica y casos prácticos.

Huerta Vásquez, Eduardo Andrés 11 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis presents the development and results of a research work that proposes a method of designing incremental services that works for knowledge management environments via Internet, called e-services. This method is based on the principles of collaborative design-by which all organizational profiles provide specific design tasks, and the idea of incremental progression of projects, increasing at each stage of production the formal features and functionality artifact. The thesis begins with a theoretical study in which we present the main concepts and features three main areas: 1) new business models and scenarios that emerge from them, as so-called "open innovation" and "living labs"; 2) The research in the design field, which involved paradigms as "collaborative design" that governs the development of this doctoral research; 3) Theory of distributed cognition, studying the characteristics of cognitive development of subjects in different environments using different types of artifacts. A second part of the thesis presents the results of empirical exploration based on the concepts, features and phases of action research method. This chapter presents the incremental design method -main contribution of the thesis- and explains how it has been tested on two projects undertaken by the organization in which research is conducted. These projects make contributions in two different environments in knowledge management area. The projects are the development (following the proposed method) of e-health service to support the treatment of the disease of dysphagia; and systematization of incremental design method by implementing a workflow tool that is useful in everyday activity of the collective multidisciplinary research that develops the thesis. From empirical exploration emerge qualitative and quantitative results that are intended to validate the proposed methodology and are exposed in the thesis document. Finally, the last chapter presents general conclusions and specific work and contributions this makes to the scientific community, as well as suggesting some future research that may follow the experience presented here.

Studies of multicomponent assemblies

Long, Samuel Reid 03 March 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is divided into three major sections (one on dendrimers, one on tripodal metal ligands and one on a research oriented chemistry curricula) with a primary focus on different types of multicomponent assemblies. In the first chapter, a system is described that used a multicomponent assembly of AT-PAMAM dendrimers and an indicator, carboxyfluorescein, to detect and identify various polyanions at a low micromolar concentration. The system was able to successfully differentiate twelve anions, many of biological interest, including three tricarboxylates. The tricarboxylates were differentiated based primarily on the regiochemistry of the anionic groups. In the second chapter, further studies with AT-PAMAM dendrimers were carried out to provide some understanding of the thermodynamic origins of binding. Utilizing isothermal titration calorimetry, the binding of the dendrimers to large polyanionic dendrons with increasing numbers of charges was studied. Through these studies, the thermodynamic values of the binding events were obtained allowing us to explore the properties of the dendrimers. The cooperativity of the system was measured, and primarily negative cooperativity determined by the entropic contributions was uncovered. As the dendrimers increased in size, the thermodynamic origins of binding were determined to a greater extent by the entropy of binding. In the third chapter, a novel dynamic ligand system for metal binding is described. In the presence of a metal salt, a heterocyclic aldehyde and a secondary amine with two heterocyclic arms reversibly condense to form a hemiaminal with a tripodal metal binding site. This chapter describes studies on the metal binding ability, the variety of metals that will lead to this formation, the effects of anions and the range of aldehydes that can be used are described. Furthermore, the system’s reversibility was explored. Finally, the use of a bistriazole secondary amine was explored. The modular nature of triazole formation could lead to the introduction of additional functionalities. The fourth chapter discusses how the novel ligand system could be used to study the enantiomeric excess (ee) of chiral thiols. Based upon the system’s ability to form a stable hemiaminal thioether, a CD signal could be generated that is proportional to the amount of a particular enantiomer in solution. Using this system, a calibration curve relating CD signal and ee can be generated giving the ee of an unknown solution. In the final chapter, a look at the Freshman Research Initiative will be carried out with a focus on the ability to teach basic skills in an introductory laboratory through research. Four different skills or techniques will be explored through three different FRI streams,x and how they teach the four skills. Finally, analysis of the success of the program, particularly students’ success in the next laboratory course in the sequence, is discussed, and a model for adopting this type of teaching at other universities is given. / text

Harnessing nature's timekeeper: a history of the piezoelectric quartz crystal technological community (1880-1959)

McGahey, Christopher Shawn 05 March 2009 (has links)
In 1880, French brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered the phenomenon of piezoelectricity in naturally occurring quartz crystal, sometimes referred to as 'nature's timekeeper.' By 1959, tens of millions of devices that exploited quartz crystal's piezoelectric character were being used in the technologies of radio, telephony, and electronic timekeeping. This dissertation analyzes the rapid rise of quartz crystal technology in the United States by looking at the growth of its knowledge base as reflected primarily in patents and journal articles. The major finding of this analysis is that the rise of quartz crystal technology cannot be fully understood by looking only at individuals, institutions, and technological factors. Rather, this work posits that the concept of technological community is indispensible in explaining rapid technological growth and diffusion that would otherwise seem inexplicable. In the late 1920s, and again in the early 1940s, the knowledge base of quartz crystal technology experienced exponential growth, partly due to U.S. government patronage and enlightened regulation. However, as this study shows, quartz crystal engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs could not have mobilized as quickly and effectively as they did unless a vibrant technological community already existed. Furthermore, the United States' ability to support such a thriving community depended in part on an early 20th century American culture that displayed an unmatched enthusiasm for democratic communications media, most especially broadcast radio and universal telephone service. Archival records, professional journal articles, government reports, manufacturer catalogs, and U.S. patents have been used to document this history of the quartz crystal technological community. This dissertation contributes to the literature on technological communities and their role in facilitating technological and ecomonic growth by showing that though such communities often form spontaneously, their growth may be nurtured and stimulated through enlightened government regulation. As such, this dissertation should be of interest to scholars in the fields of history of technology, business history, management studies, and public policy.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) entered school environments to be auxiliary means to the process of teaching and learning. In most public schools, the presence of these technologies, which is represented by computers, happened with the setting of computer labs. Studies previously developed by several researchers of the educational field made it clear that the setting of computer labs did not guarantee that such tools were used to help students in their knowledge construction because of the disconnection with curriculum contents. Aiming at articulating the use of computer labs with the contents of Elementary School 1st to 5th year, this study, which had a qualitative approach with characteristics of an action research and used an experimental and participative methodology, purposed an intervention for the use of computers as helpers to the pedagogical process through a teachers’ continuous training during service developed with 24 individuals in a local public school of a small town in the countryside of São Paulo. As an outcome of this study for Professional Master Degree, we elaborated a digital book with suggestions for the work with teachers in computer labs. We verified that, even being insecure about using computers, teachers like such technology and showed themselves interested and participative during the training activities and, thus, contributed for educational computer labs to become knowledge construction places which are favorable to the process of teaching and learning.

Redelabs : laboratórios experimentais em rede / Redelabs : networked experimental labs

Fonseca, Felipe Schmidt, 1978- 25 August 2018 (has links)
This dissertation reports on discoveries, hypotheses and conclusions of research on a kind of collaborative production that connects arts, science, activism, innovation, design, among other areas. It focuses on the appearing, in recent years, of the so-called experimental labs ¿ network articulated spaces in which such a production comes into being. Under that perspective are approached denominations such as media labs, hackerspaces, Fablabs, among others. The research analyses some of these models against the background of techno-utopian imaginary, which asserts information technologies as tools to fight against burocracy and allienation of society. With the goal of questioning the usual association of experimental labs in general to the development of cybernetics and particularly to the history of MIT Media Lab in the USA, the research explores other narrative threads for the multiple fields that influence the formation of labs. Attention is paid to the dialogue between, on one side, the contemporary context of labs in different parts of the wirld, and on the other the contribution of the idea of a particularly brazilian digital culture ¿ which over the last decade offered the possibility of building a discourse that draws closer free (open) software, cultural diversity and public policies for social inclusion. Two particular axes of the brazilian digital culture are discussed: the compensatory, which seeks to correct historical distortions by including populations in the so-called information age; and the exploratory, that seeks to criticize and influence future paths of the articulation of technology and society. The dissertation reports as weel on field research undertaken in Finland, where were experimented the preparation of an international festival on arts and technology, visits to different spaces situated on the field of experimental labs, and personal contact with members of groups and collectives that work on the border of culture and technology. Such experiences contributed to the understanding of important elements of experimental labs, especially the aspect of non-conformation to the expectations of a society increasingly ruled by the transformation of every cultural expression into economic value. This understanding is deepened by the end of the dissertation on the image of the experimental lab as a blank space that, as well as working as an interface between digital networks and the particular dynamics of the places in which they are located, are also situated as instances of resistance and reinvention before the cybernetical informational capitalism / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural

Transforming U.Lab : Re-designing a participatory methodology using a strategic sustainable perspective

Bajraktari, Florentina, Mosse, Rosamund, Neira Voto, Gabriel January 2016 (has links)
Currently society is facing a set of interconnected challenges, known collectively as the Sustainability Challenge, which are systematically increasing socio-ecological unsustainability on a scale never experienced before.  In order to address the Sustainability Challenge, Social Labs provide an approach that is systemic, participatory and emergent, enabling solutions that are responsive to the dynamic nature of those interconnected challenges. Our research explores how a specific lab - U.Lab - can be re-designed in order to move society strategically toward a sustainable future. We use the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, designed to help practitioners to facilitate society’s transition towards sustainable development, as well as concepts of strategic sustainable development, which support s shift from unsustainable systems, structures and practices towards sustainable ones in a strategic way. Our research follows Design Research Methodology (DRM). DRM aims for the formulation, validation and development of theories and models in the field of design. U.Lab’s experiential response to the Sustainability Challenge inspires participants to question paradigms of thought and societal norms. However, U.Lab is still an emerging social technology and lacks boundary conditions and a scientific basis for understanding our current reality and creating the solutions that will lead society systematically towards a sustainable future.
