Under the Shadow of the Awful Gallows-Tree: The Murder Trials of Thomas Dula and Ann Melton as a Case Study in Gender and Power in Reconstruction Era Western North Carolina

Miller, Heather L. 01 May 2015 (has links)
This is a micro-history that explores everyday life on a small scale by tracing the common, if elusive lives of Thomas Dula, Ann Melton, and Laura Foster, and the communities they lived in, to explore the culture in which they lived—and died. Reactions to the murder unleashed an outpouring of discourse embedded in broader, national debates concerning gender roles. The dominant cultural theme that emerged from the murder trials as reflected in middle-class newspapers maintained that true women did not kill and real men acted as gentlemen and defenders of women’s honor. The project mines a wealth of primary source material: court documents, population censuses, and newspapers. By examining the discourse surrounding Tom Dula’s execution and Ann Melton’s acquittal for the murder of Laura Foster it illuminates the murder narrative as a public forum for discussing gender roles and power in 1860s America.

Free Trade and Free Societies: The Effects of CAFTA on Democratic Institutions in Central America

Nahmias, David 01 January 2010 (has links)
During the debate over the ratification of the United States-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the Bush Administration argued that implementation of a free trade agreement would help strengthen the nascent democracies in Central America. As a bilateral agreement, CAFTA would not only foment greater trade liberalization by expanding market access and eliminating trade barriers, but also help transform the entire commercial frameworks in Central America and promote economic development. These implications are not just economic – in particular, its provisions on intellectual property and investment rights, government procurement and labor standards affect the political institutions underpinning democracy and rule of law. This thesis assesses the role in which CAFTA has affected democratic institutions in Central America. It employs a methodology known as the Democratic Audit to evaluate consequences to four dimensions of democracy - the electoral processes, open and accountable institutions, civil and political liberties, and civil society. It demonstrates the value of using the Democratic Audit to assess a trade agreement’s political effects with an application to Mexico after NAFTA. Then this work considers the case studies of El Salvador and Costa Rica, the most salient examples of democratic institutional change after CAFTA, by drawing on original research especially into the electoral politics and civil society development in these countries. Ultimately, the thesis argues that the most significant institutional effects of CAFTA have been its role as a political issue, rather than its content, in galvanizing popular opinion and reinvigorating electoral politics and civil society - ironically, not the consequences that the Administration originally had in mind. The research demonstrates that, even if some conclusions cannot be drawn due to the recency of CAFTA, the framework it has employed will be an invaluable tool for assessing future trade agreements.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2010_Dis_JTVieira.pdf: 3322223 bytes, checksum: fedd93248e1c6fb3a252ff48e2f9bf56 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010 / On the 12th of June, 1839, a number of slaves on board the brig-schooner Laura Segunda, which had earlier left Pernambuco en-route to Maranhão, mutinied off the coast of Ceará, killing six people: the captain; the boatswain; the pilot; two of the sailors and a passenger. After landing on the beach at Iguape, the slaves were captured and nine of them charged and taken to be prosecuted in Fortaleza, where six were sentenced to death, one to life imprisonment with forced-labour, yet another to being whipped and forced to go around in irons, and the last acquitted. The trials were summary in nature, demonstrating the need for a prompt and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the "horrendous attack". The present research aims to examine the mutiny and the various events which surrounded the negro slaves on board the Laura. To this end we propose examining the system of cabotage shipping carried out between the North and Northeast of Brazil, in particular that from Pará to Pernambuco, in an attempt to understand the work environment of the slave-sailors on the Laura Segunda. In addition, we wish to investigate and detail the various movements which occurred during the 1830s and which fostered a climate of political and social instability in Brazil, paving the way for various acts of rebellion by the slaves, of which the mutiny on the Laura Segunda was one. The memory of the mutiny and the events surrounding the negros on board the Laura remained alive in Fortaleza for some considerable time. We plan to arrive at an appreciation of the meaning of these events and how they were appropriated by Ceará society, and in particular by the slaves.

Rivero Ramos, Claudia Jennifer 09 July 2018 (has links)
Tesis

La centralité du public dans la création théâtrale : étude des expérimentations de l'artiste Laura Hurt de 2014 à 2018 / The centrality of the public in theatrical creation : study of the experiments of the artist Laura Hurt from 2014 to 2018

Librizzi-Huret, Laura 29 May 2019 (has links)
Drawing upon four years of artistic and theatrical experimentation (2014-2018) in the city of Nice and the department of Alpes-Maritimes, this thesis attempts to take account of the intellectual approach and processes involved in a post-contemporary creation. It reveals the particular nature of the experience of the artist Laura Hurt, who is both producer and researcher-practitioner-thinker in the framework of this thesis on creativity. Moving freely between theory and practice, we have tried to put forward how a chaotic personal journey and a solid artistic training lead to new ways of working, notably placing the public at the heart of all artistic approaches and whenever the question of the public’s central role in theatre might be of primary, even essential pertinence in the putting on of a spectacle aiming to continue the art of ‘theatre for all’, ‘poor or minimal theatre’ or even ‘elite theatre for everyone’, thereby discovering how, today, the creative act may promote notions such as fraternity and universal concord by paying special attention to the public and particularly that public having little access to art, the so-called handicapped public. This thesis analyses via its heuristic model the inner world and outer world of stage performance, and reveals how the interdisciplinary, the performative and the poetic act allow for a new freedom to draw closer to the public, erasing all that separates, so as to better reclaim what we share. The thesis derives from a desire to theorise, analyse, decode, explain and discover a posteriori those acts involved in an artistic approach, and to bring to light the intimate, discreet, unsaid knowledge of the artist’s epistemological genesis in her creative gesture.

Do Afghan women need saving? : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Laura Bush’s representation of the women in Afghanistan

Møller, Silke January 2021 (has links)
Do Afghan women need saving? This study focuses on the discourse of the USA’s First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush in the years (2001-2009) and how she represents the women in Afghanistan in the context of the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan. My aim is to understand how the USA intervention can be legitimized through Mrs. Bush’s argumentation of bringing human rights to Afghan women. In the analysis in this thesis, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis is used in combination with feminist and postcolonial theory to understand her discourse about the women in Afghanistan and how her resulting discourse functions in connection with the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan. The study concludes that Mrs. Bush constructs the Afghan women as in need of help and in connection the USA as the helping hand who have an obligation to save the women in Afghanistan. In combination with strategic use of ‘embedded feminism’ and an oriental discourse Mrs. Bush’s discourse functions to make the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan seem legitimate.

Genderová analýza vývoje ženských hrdinek v animované tvorbě Walta Disneyho / Gender analyse of female heroes developement in Walt Disney animation

Daňková, Andrea January 2019 (has links)
The thesis addresses analysis of stories and narrative in relation to the subject of gender. This analysis primarily deals with fairy tale The Beauty and the Beast by Disney. The first part is about general theoretical basis for my thesis and about the most important authors in this field. Archetypes and logocentrism topics are dealt with partially as well. The foundations of the first part are however literary and motion-picture feministic theories, also the concept of the myth of beauty. In the practical part sequences of the The Beast and the Beauty are studied. Findings described in theoretical part is utilized here and the marked and subtle influence of androcentric culture on style and content of the story is shown.

Cultural Studies und Geschlecht

Geimer, Alexander 25 April 2017 (has links)

Cavagnaro Farfán, Franco 13 July 2020 (has links)
