The journal América (Mexico City, 1940-1960) was founded as a leftist monthly focused on politically uniting Latin American and exiled Spanish youth and, by the end of its print life, was a semifrequent literary anthology sponsored by the Mexican government’s Secretaria de Educación Pública, publishing the early-career writings of Juan Rulfo, Rosario Castellanos, Rodolfo Usigli, and more. Despite its literary historical importance, the journal’s issues are not digitized nor are their contents publicly available; further, there is no library or archive that holds a complete collection of América’s issues. This index and editorial history catalogues the contents of sixty-nine of América’s seventy-four issues and gives a brief editorial and publication history of the journal.

An exploration of cinematography, societal expectations, and artist collaboration, “Fake It!” challenges the traditional definition of art. Part one follows the journey of creating a music video for an original song titled “Fake It!” by the band Model City. Location, lighting, camera, and editing choices are explained and connected to the song's themes of teenage angst, regret, and a rejection of societal norms. Part two explores the process of creating art by translating the hexadecimal color values from the music video into a new musical composition. This is accomplished through a mathematical process that converts the computer-identified RGB letters and numbers into notes on the musical scale.

abstract: El presente estudio aborda aspectos de la monstruosidad desde una perspectiva integral y transdisciplinaria que combina los estudios poscoloniales, postmodernos, queer pero sobre todo postfeministas en el campo de la producción cultural latinoamericana. Esta combinación permite poner en perspectiva la posibilidades de resistencia al tiempo y espacio en que coaccionan los personajes protagónicos de las obras a analizar: los filmes La teta asustada (2009) de Claudia Llosa y la ópera prima de Rosario García Montero, Las malas intenciones (2011); de igual forma se trabaja con la colección de cuentos Falo de Mulher (2002) y el cuento "Mãe o cacete" (2004) de Ivanna Arruda Leite; y por último, un estudio de la leyenda de la X’tabay perteneciente al sureste mexicano junto con un análisis discursivo de la cobertura de los feminicidios por parte de la prensa yucateca. Over the past 4 and a half years, I have studied contemporary art and seen countless artworks being made in an academic setting. In doing so, I have come to the realization that religious content is rare in today’s time. While it is not actively discouraged, the environment I am in and the current art community does not seem to be particularly interested in merging the two concepts. Without understanding why, I subconsciously kept art and my faith as separate entities for the first few years of my higher education. But as I matured and developed my own artwork, I began to feel as though my identity and my interests should be rooted in my relationship with God. Upon this reflection, I began looking for ways to make Christian art in a contemporary setting that could also be accepted by those who do not share my faith.

Biofuels are a sought-after alternative for fossil fuels in today’s society. More specifically, cellulose-based biofuel is an avenue of research intending to limit waste and provide new renewable energy. Cellulose is a rigid polymer of glucose monomers that is found abundantly across different agriculture crops. However, its stability is a barrier to energy production from this source. Pretreatment followed by hydrolysis of cellulosic materials serves a potential to produce glucose to be used in biofuels in larger quantities compared to other methods. This project studied the effect microwave pretreatment and oxygenation have on hydrolysis of cellulose in Arundo Donax. Arundo Donax ground samples are used in solution with acetic acid buffer (pH= 5.0) along with cellulase and maintained at 50°C. The solution’s concentration, in parts per million (ppm), of glucose after hydrolysis was measured over 96 hours using the dinitro salicylic acid method. The Michaelis-Menten constant for cellulase using Arundo Donax and Microcrystalline cellulose before pretreatment were found to be 29.965 g/L and 6.684 g/L, respectively. The concentration of glucose found in Arundo Donax reached a maximum of 310 ppm after 72 hours. In addition, oxygenation, and deoxygenation of buffer and Arundo solution as pretreatment did not yield significantly higher concentrations than Arundo without oxygen manipulation averaging a glucose production of 214.5 ppm with deoxygenation and 209.2 ppm with oxygenation. Microwave pretreatment of Arundo Donax followed by hydrolysis resulted in 29.2 ppm glucose.

abstract: This doctoral dissertation proposes an analysis of a selection of photographic series by a diverse group of Latin American photographers such as Argentinian Gustavo Di Mario, Brazilians Claudio Edinger and Alair Gomes, and Mexican Dorian Ulises López Macías. The analyzed material focuses on a revision of characteristics of masculinity and imperative heteronormativity in the discourses on their respective national identities. The projects put-fourth by these four artists represent a political proposal that unveals the homoaffective possibilities of their photographic referents. Susan Sontag postulates in her On Photography (1979) that “the powers of photography have in effect de-Platonized our understanding of reality, making it less and less plausible to reflect upon our experience according to the distinction between images and things, between copies and originals” (179). These artists understand the power of the image and, through its meticulous composition, they propose to not only photograph, but to also narrate the reality of dissident identities and their belonging to a collective national identity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2019
