Ending on a high note: A simple technique for encouraging students to practice retrieval

Garrett M O'Day (6996329) 25 July 2022 (has links)

Extensive evidence supports the effectiveness of retrieval practice as a powerful method for promoting long-term learning. For students to obtain the maximum benefit from retrieval practice they need to incorporate the strategy into their study routines as a learning tool that is used early and often. Unfortunately, many students avoid retrieval practice and instead rely primarily on less effective learning strategies such as rereading, and existing interventions that encourage students to practice retrieval are rare. Given this troubling gap in the literature, this dissertation sought to create and experimentally evaluate a novel intervention that attempted to improve students’ evaluations of and increase their willingness to use retrieval practice.

In two experiments, the Pilot Study and Experiment 1, students studied a list of Lithuanian-English translations and completed two retrieval practice activities. The control retrieval practice activity prompted students to retrieve only difficult translations, whereas the high note retrieval practice activity prompted students to retrieve the same number of difficult translations but ended with additional trials that were normatively less difficult. Students preferred the high note retrieval practice activity over the shorter retrieval practice activity that had a more difficult ending, which suggests that existing retrieval practice activities can be improved by crafting endings that afford more opportunities for successful retrieval. Experiment 2 demonstrated that ending a retrieval practice activity on a high note could encourage students to choose retrieval practice over restudying for a subsequent learning activity. Experiment 3 replicated the findings from Experiment 2 and extended the results to a new type of material that is common in educational settings—general knowledge questions (i.e., fact learning). Finally, Experiment 4 investigated whether the preference for the high note retrieval practice activity found in the previous experiments was driven by the placement of the moderately difficult items at the end of the activity.

Overall, this dissertation provides yet another demonstration that most students choose to avoid retrieval practice during learning. However, creating retrieval practice activities that had less difficult endings successfully improved students’ evaluations of and increased their willingness to use retrieval practice. These results have important implications for understanding and overcoming the barriers that prevent students from practicing retrieval.

Redovisningsstudenter & generativ AI : Enkätstudie om redovisningsstudenters användning av generativ AI

Olsson, Josefine, Roos, Jennifer January 2024 (has links)
Title: Accounting Students & generative AI Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. Author: Jennifer Roos and Josefine Olsson Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2024 – May Aim: To investigate how accounting students with different learning strategies (surface learning and deep learning) use generative AI in their studies and to analyze how generative AI contributes to students’ learning. Method: The study is based on a positivist research philosophy and a deductive research approach. The method is a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional design in the form of a questionnaire that forms the study's primary data consisting of 62 respondents, of which 10 respondents were excluded and counted as non-valid. The data has been coded and analyzed in the statistical program SPSS. Results and conclusions: The results of the study indicate that there is an even spread between the learning strategies, surface- and deep learning, in accounting students and that the few accounting students belong to both learning strategies. The result shows that generative AI can be used for both surface learning and deep learning and tends to accentuate the current learning strategy. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes to new, highly current and important research to the research gap regarding how generative AI affects the learning strategy of accounting students. The insights from the study contribute to an increased understanding of the design of accounting education to prepare accounting students for the profession. Suggestions for future research: Future research could expand the sample to better represent the population, accounting students. Additionally, future research should explore how other learning strategies may influence the use of generative AI as well as examine relationships between variables such as gender, age, geographic location, and course subject to identify similarities, differences, and patterns. Key words: Accounting Students, Chatbots, Deep learning, Generative AI, Learning strategies & Surface learning.

Emergent Bilinguals' Literacy and Language Use across Different Contexts

Sung Ae Kim (12474927) 28 April 2022 (has links)

Over the past decades, language and language learning research heavily relied on an individual’s innate ability or level of proficiency rather than social aspects that influence the individual’s ability to use language. Consequently, scholars of language learning research narrowly dealt with linguistic features and/or grammar within an isolated manner like the model of universal grammar (UG) proposed by Chomsky (Chomsky, 1972; Lantolf, 1994). However, socially oriented scholars have lately criticized this limited view on language learning (Garcia & Li Wei, 2014; Norton, 1995; Pennycook, 2010). From a sociocultural perspective, language becomes meaningful within the social realm because it is deeply interconnected with the social environment. This perspective calls for a new approach to research, teach, and understand bilingualism and language learning, especially the role of a bilinguals’ home language (thereafter Heritage Language) and its use in the second language (usually English) learning process (August & Shanahan, 2010; Boyle, et, al, 2015; Garcia, 2011). In the past, bilinguals’ hybrid language practices have been considered a sign of language deficiency and/or problem attributed to the HL (Creese & Blackledge, 2010, Heller, 2006, & Wei, 2011) and overlook its contribution to learning the English language and to bilingualism. Recent scholarship in language education has deviated from the form-focused approach to the critical approach. The critical approach examines bilinguals’ hybrid language practices, translanguaging, as bilinguals’ discursive and dynamic communication to make sense of the world by drawing their full linguistic and cultural repertoires (Grosjean, 2010; Otheguy, García, & Reid, 2015).

This dissertation specifically examines in what ways a student’s use of two languages contributes to advancing their academic and social goals throughout their education. I analyze Korean emergent bilinguals’ language and literacy use across different contexts: public elementary school, the Korean heritage language school, home, and local churches, to understand how emergent bilingual 1st graders engage in their learning process. Drawing on a qualitative case study with four Korean emergent bilinguals, the data include over 106 hours of participant observation and transcripts of audio recordings across four contexts and interviews with students, parents, and teachers. Using thematic analysis, I code in what ways various social contexts influence bilinguals’ translanguaging practices and in what ways individual children reveal their linguistic and cultural identities in their oral and written communication. This dissertation demonstrates that bilinguals utilize a myriad of translanguaging practices to achieve various social and linguistic goals and to accommodate different social contexts.

In conclusion, this dissertation provides substantial contributions to language literacy education in two ways: to use translanguaging practices for communicative and linguistic purposes, and to maintain HL for English language development. First, this study supports the reconciliation of the two premises of language learning. Emergent bilinguals’ flexible use of linguistic and cultural resources demonstrates that “linguistic and cultural knowledge are constructed through each other and language-acquiring children are active and selective agents in both process” (Watson-Gegeo & Nielsen, 2003, p. 165). As discussed, translanguaging not only offers new insight into bilingual education in different learning contexts but also reveals bilinguals’ hidden language repertoires and the diverse cultural knowledge that bilinguals possess. Second, this study adds to our understanding of language maintenance in a larger society by exploring a small community of Korean emergent bilinguals in the Midwestern United States.

The influence of learning strategies learners' self-efficacy and academic achievement

Matseke, Phyllistus Moshala 11 1900 (has links)
Accelerated social change emphasises knowledge and innovation, creating a need for learners to excel at learning and thinking. The study’s purpose was to replicate previous cognitive research findings, which emphasise the positive influence of learning strategies on learners’ self-efficacy and academic achievement and to verify the validity of training learners in learning strategy-use to promote learner-autonomy and accountability. The research targeted a selected primary school in a Black township in Gauteng Province using quasi-experimental and qualitative methods. The sample comprised 152 4th - 7th graders assigned by quota system to the treatment group and the control group. Learners participated in pre-tests and post-tests for learning strategies, self-efficacy and academic achievement. Only the experimental groups received strategy instruction before the post-test. The experimental group’s improved performance compared to the control group’s lower performance suggests the effectiveness of strategy-training. Subsequent learner reports of improved self-efficacy beliefs and academic achievement confirm strategy-effect on these variables. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Educational Psychology)

Fasilitering van krities reflektiewe leer in verpleegonderwys

Van Kleef, Heidi 30 June 2002 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of this research was to draw up guidelines for nursing tutors on the facilitation of critical reflective learning in student nurses within the context of nursing education. The research question was stated as follows: What guidelines does the nursing tutor need to facilitate critical reflective learning in student nurses? The research design was qualitative, contextual, explorative and descriptive of nature. Ten nursing tutors were selected for participation on the basis of their expertise and experience. Data collection was in the form of written narratives. The data was analysed according to the eight-step method of Tesch (1990) in Cresswell (1994:155). An independent coder was involved in the judgement and interpretation of data. The research guidelines were derived from the research findings. These guidelines are applicable directly to nursing education and indirectly to the nursing practice, therefore it contributes to the scientific body of nursing knowledge. / Health Studies / M.A. (Verpleegonderwys)

Alignment of the emerging management development programme(EMDP) to the human resource development strategy for the South African public service

Boshomane, Lekau Godfrey 11 1900 (has links)
The focus of this research is to understand the relevance of the Human Resource Development Strategy for the functioning of South African Public Service and its implications for the Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP). One of the main challenges of the Human Resource Development Strategy (HRDS) is its translation into well designed training programmes that are aligned with the goals and objectives of the strategy. The Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP) is meant to be the translation and interpretation of the HRDS for public sector training and development on emerging management level. The intention of this study is to evaluate, analyse and understand the alignment of the EMDP with the Human Resource Development Strategy for the South African pubic service and subsequently suggest proposals for the possible improvement of emerging middle management development. The objectives of the research will be stated in the form of two critical questions:  What are the main directives in the Human Resource Development Strategy for the Public Service regarding management development in general, and the gaps in the design and development of the Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP) in particular?  How does the design and development of the current EMDP meet the strategic vision for management development as envisioned in the Human Resource Development Strategy for the Public Service? The research methodology applied in this study, is a qualitative research approach. This approach focuses on phenomena that occur in natural settings, i.e. in the real world and involve studying those phenomena in all of their complexity which is used to gather data. This data is preserved in descriptive narratives. A qualitative research approach also uses mainly the constructivist-interpretive perspective. The key finding is that as much as the EMDP is comprehensive, it is however not yet aligned with the Human Resource Development Strategy of the South African Public Service. The recommendation is that the conversion of the objectives of HRDS-SA into the learning outcomes of the EMDP in order to provide a framework for a comprehensive base of competencies that inform the curriculation of the EMDP is important. This will ensure that the learners are able to benefit from a multitude of skills development activities in the programme and, in so doing, render them more purposeful to improve their impact on the skills challenges of the country. / Public Administration and Management / M.
