Socio-economic factors that affect livestock numbers : a case study of smallholder cattle and sheep farmers in the Free State province of South Africa

Ogunkoya, Folasade Temitope 05 1900 (has links)
The study was conducted across the four district municipalities in the Free State province of South Africa. The objective of the study was to determine socio-economic factors that affected livestock numbers among smallholder cattle and sheep farmers in the Free State province of South Africa. The research was qualitative and quantitative in nature. Proportionate random sampling method was used to collect data. The population comprised of smallholder cattle and sheep farmers that kept at least 30 livestock. Data between the 2008 and 2012 farming seasons were collected by administering well-structured questionnaires to 250 smallholder cattle and sheep farmers. Data collected were captured and analysed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 22 of 2013) to obtain frequency, cross-tabulation, descriptive statistics and ordinary least square (OLS) regression. Descriptive statistics results indicated that lack of camp systems, drought prevalence, increased feed costs, poor veterinary interventions, insufficient breeding stock, high cost of fuel and transportation, lack of equipment, diseases, stock theft and pilfering, and insufficient grazing land were the prevalent factors that affected cattle and sheep farming in the province. The OLS regression results indicated that the variables that significantly affected livestock numbers were district, household size, livestock numbers in 2008, planted pastures, grazing land condition, grazing land acquisition, service, advice / training, veterinary services, purchase of dosing products and sales per year. The results also indicated that the majority (96.8%) of the smallholder cattle and sheep farmers would like to increase their livestock numbers. It was therefore recommended that extension and veterinary services should be strengthened in the study area. In addition, it was recommended that smallholder livestock farmers should be encouraged to plant pastures to reduce pressure on the natural veld and make forage available throughout the year. Lastly, as a recommendation, government should provide subsidies with distribution policies that will ensure that all smallholder livestock farmers can benefit. / Agriculture and  Animal Health / M. Fugita, Felipe January 2018 (has links)
One of the goals of this work is to explain Item Response Theory, known as IRT, emphasizing the Three-Parameter Logistic model and describing its main characteristics. Another objective is to demonstrate how educators can use statistical tools within a spreadsheet to: verify the quality and reliability of test questions; examine whether there is a correlation between two assessment tools; use the school average of a student to predict his or her performance in entrance examinations; among other possibilities. To explain IRT and its method of parameter estimation by maximum likelihood, this work presents the mathematical, probabilistic and statistical models that are the pillars of the theory. It also describes how the large-scale educational assessment programs of various countries use IRT to monitor the performance of their education systems. Then, this work presents a selection of statistical tools, specifically, the correlation coefficient, the least squares method and the point biserial correlation, which could contribute to the process of routine educational assessments. Also provided are illustrated examples of spreadsheets with step-by- step descriptions of their creation and the commands used. Thus, the work hopes to contribute to the understanding of IRT and, consequently, of the educational indicators produced by large-scale assessment programs, as well as benefit educators in their practice and reflection on methods of educational evaluation.

The Development of Image Processing Algorithms in Cryo-EM

Rui Yan (6591728) 15 May 2019 (has links)
Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has been established as the leading imaging technique for structural studies from small proteins to whole cells at a molecular level. The great advances in cryo-EM have led to the ability to provide unique insights into a wide variety of biological processes in a close to native, hydrated state at near-atomic resolutions. The developments of computational approaches have significantly contributed to the exciting achievements of cryo-EM. This dissertation emphasizes new approaches to address image processing problems in cryo-EM, including tilt series alignment evaluation, simultaneous determination of sample thickness, tilt, and electron mean free path based on Beer-Lambert law, Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction (MBIR) on tomographic data, minimization of objective lens astigmatism in instrument alignment and defocus and magnification dependent astigmatism of TEM images. The final goal of these methodological developments is to improve the 3D reconstruction of cryo-EM and visualize more detailed characterization.

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT FUEL CONSUMPTION DURING IDLING : Characterization using multivariate data analysis at Volvo CE

Hassani, Mujtaba January 2020 (has links)
Human activities have increased the concentration of CO2 into the atmosphere, thus it has caused global warming. Construction equipment are semi-stationary machines and spend at least 30% of its life time during idling. The majority of the construction equipment is diesel powered and emits toxic emission into the environment. In this work, the idling will be investigated through adopting several statistical regressions models to quantify the fuel consumption of construction equipment during idling. The regression models which are studied in this work: Multivariate Linear Regression (ML-R), Support Vector Machine Regression (SVM-R), Gaussian Process regression (GP-R), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Partial Least Square Regression (PLS-R) and Principal Components Regression (PC-R). Findings show that pre-processing has a significant impact on the goodness of the prediction of the explanatory data analysis in this field. Moreover, through mean centering and application of the max-min scaling feature, the accuracy of models increased remarkably. ANN and GP-R had the highest accuracy (99%), PLS-R was the third accurate model (98% accuracy), ML-R was the fourth-best model (97% accuracy), SVM-R was the fifth-best (73% accuracy) and the lowest accuracy was recorded for PC-R (83% accuracy). The second part of this project estimated the CO2 emission based on the fuel used and by adopting the NONROAD2008 model.  Keywords:

Recommender System for Gym Customers

Sundaramurthy, Roshni January 2020 (has links)
Recommender systems provide new opportunities for retrieving personalized information on the Internet. Due to the availability of big data, the fitness industries are now focusing on building an efficient recommender system for their end-users. This thesis investigates the possibilities of building an efficient recommender system for gym users. BRP Systems AB has provided the gym data for evaluation and it consists of approximately 896,000 customer interactions with 8 features. Four different matrix factorization methods, Latent semantic analysis using Singular value decomposition, Alternating least square, Bayesian personalized ranking, and Logistic matrix factorization that are based on implicit feedback are applied for the given data. These methods decompose the implicit data matrix of user-gym group activity interactions into the product of two lower-dimensional matrices. They are used to calculate the similarities between the user and activity interactions and based on the score, the top-k recommendations are provided. These methods are evaluated by the ranking metrics such as Precision@k, Mean average precision (MAP) @k, Area under the curve (AUC) score, and Normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG) @k. The qualitative analysis is also performed to evaluate the results of the recommendations. For this specific dataset, it is found that the optimal method is the Alternating least square method which achieved around 90\% AUC for the overall system and managed to give personalized recommendations to the users.

Moisture effects on visible near-infrared and mid-infrared soil spectra and strategies to mitigate the impact for predictive modeling

Silva, Francis Hettige Chamika Anuradha 08 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Instrumental disparities and soil moisture are two of the key limitations in implementing spectroscopic techniques in the field. This study sought to address these challenges through two objectives. The first objective was to assess Visible-near infrared (VisNIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic approaches and explore the feasibility of transferring calibration models between laboratory and portable spectrometers. The second objective addressed the challenge of soil moisture and its impact on spectra. The portable spectrometers demonstrated comparable performance to their laboratory-based counterparts in both regions. Spiking with extra-weight, was the most effective calibration transfer method eliminating disparities between instruments. The samples were rewetted under nine controlled conditions for the moisture study. Results showed that spiking with extra weights significantly outperformed other techniques and model enhancement was insensitive to the moisture contents. Findings of this study will be helpful for development and deployment of in situ sensors to enable field implementation of spectroscopy.
