Notwithstanding the normative grammar teaching has been performing, for long a journey characterized by a comprehensive content in the school curriculum, along with an endless number of rules and exceptions, aiming to educate individuals enabling them to be potentially and hypothetically language users, we start a current debate about what has been done, how and which are the successful outcomes, in order to seek for an effective learning of linguistic knowledge about Portuguese by students, taking into consideration the perspective of linguistic analysis (MENDONÇA, 2006). In this regard, it was adopted in this research, based on the epistemological parameters of the research-action (MORIN, 2004) and carried out in the scope of the professional master in Letters, the grammar teaching perspective based on the studies of Mendonça (2006) and Bezerra & Reinaldo (2013), which states that the linguistic aspects taught must be linked to their use. We suggest a correlation between the textual genres and the linguistic analysis to enable this mentioned connection. For this purpose, the current research investigated the teaching of the verb tense and mode in Portuguese language text books of Elementary School II endorsed by PNLD in 2010 and in 2014.Thus it was analyzed the teaching of verb tense and mode, and we realized that indeed, it pursued a modern approach, mainly founded on textual genres; once we communicate by them (BAKHTIN, 2000). Once it is detected the disconnection between the way verbs are taught and its prominence on textual genres, it is requested the application of verbs relying on the verb use on publicity and advertisement, in two students groups of the 8th year of elementary School II. With that in mind, the verbs were worked on the discursive perspective in the genres publicity and advertisement, concerning the understanding of verbs and the act of producing them, aiming to highlight the verbal use in these genres, which instantiate guiding speech acts (AUSTIN, 1990). In order to achieve that, it was suggested a paradigm shift to analyze these linguistic items, altering the focus from a normative education to the one grounded on the use of real verb tenses, associating them with the communicative goal of the textual genres/types of publicity and advertisement. The results obtained by means of application has shown that the use of linguistic analysis, combined with the genres production, emphasizing the verbal use, has promoted a meaningful learning performance presented by students, leading them to act as protagonists and change agents of the reality.

The inefficiency of grammar rules teaching, which is often dissociated from their effective use in texts, has been verified in EJA materials. In addition, the themes addressed by the materials are sometimes far from the reality of most students. In this context, this thesis aims presented an didactic intervention proposal, whose purpose was to bridge the gap between the study of grammar - specifically punctuation - and text and the student reality, based on the Linguistic Analysis approach (MENDONÇA, 2006; ANTUNES, 2003; 2014). Through this, the student was able to perceive the importance and the role of punctuation in several genres of daily life. In this action research, students were led to observe different genres of everyday life in regard to how they are punctuated. Morevoer, they produced texts from various journalistic genres so that, at the end of the intervention project, a newspaper was prepared to be distributed in the community. The whole sequence was based on linguistic, epilingual and metalinguistic reflection (FRANCHI, 1991), in order to reach the systematization and the construction of the meanings of the text, observing the importance of the punctuation for such (DAHLET, 2006). The results obtained in this action research point to the need to establish a relationship between the teaching of punctuation and textual genres, through reflexive procedures, considering that the text reveals linguistic uses, through production and reception of meaning, in order to establish readability and interpretation.

This research aims to study the argumentative strategies such as modalisers, polyphonic indices, assumptions and implicits, in order to unfold the ideology within 12 introductory texts (so called leads), in the chapters of the textbook for the ninthgrade of Elementary School Português linguagens by William Roberto Cereja and Thereza Cochar Magalhães. The examination of the themes and projections of speakers are important in this sense, to evaluate the construction of the senses in the leads – which play a motivational role for the text of each chapter – and their relevance in the PNLD (Programa Nacional do Livro Didático). The present linguistic analysis is based on the relationship between the text syntax, functionalist postulates and linguistic semantics. The textual analysis proved to be a thematic variety in the corpus, aligned with the objectives of PNLD, and the presence of argumentative strategies in order to achieve the accession of the student-reader. The concealment of the speaker, responsible for the statement, in some titles of introductory texts, for example, consisted of a fundamental persuasion mechanism, the effect of which was causing the seduction of the young reader. Accordingly, it also brought out a stigmatized view of the speaker about the interest of adolescents by issues related to reading and current affairs.

Literacy, orality and recontextualization in the parliament of the Republic of South Africa : an ethnographic study

Siebörger, Ian January 2012 (has links)
In parliaments, the tasks of drafting legislation and conducting oversight are accomplished by means of complex chains of spoken, written and multimodal texts. In these genre chains, information is recontextualized from one text to another before being debated in sittings of the houses of parliament. This study employs the point of view afforded by linguistic ethnography to investigate critically the ways in which meanings are recontextualized in one section of such a genre chain, namely the process by which committees of South Africa's National Assembly oversee the budgets of government departments and state-owned entities. It does this to identify possible sources of communication difficulties in this process and suggest ways in which these can be minimized. In so doing, it develops a theoretical model of the discursive effects of recontextualization informed by Latour's (1987) notion of black-boxing as well as Maton's (2011) Legitimation Code Theory. This model uses Interactional Sociolinguistics and elements of Systemic Functional Linguistics, including APPRAISAL and Transitivity as tools to describe the realization of these effects in language. This study finds that ideational and interpersonal meanings are condensed and decondensed at particular points in the genre chain in ways that lead to some MPs’ voices being recontextualized more accurately than others’. It also shows that common sources of communication difficulties in the committee process include differences in political background and understandings of committee procedure and participant roles. It recommends that representatives of departments and entities reporting to the committees should receive a fuller prebriefing on their roles; that MPs should receive training on asking clear, focused questions; and that the role of committee secretaries as procedural advisors should be strengthened.

Linguagem e errância em madame Bovary

This dissertation arose from professional inaccuracies that led me to search for the bias of Linguistics, Psychoanalysis and Literature and formulate as general objective the wandering of desire and word in Madame Bovary, specifying Emma Bovary's errant relationship with the word and Wandering of desire through metaphorical processes. This research is theoretical-empirical and the methodology we choose pursues the Freudian trace of the analysis of the literary work "Gradiva - a Pompeian fantasy", whose title was known as "Deliriums and Dreams in Gradiva de Jasen" (1907 [1906]). As the research was a literary work, it was necessary to analyze in two different aspects: one that could essentially contemplate the literary aspect, and the other side, we investigated these same events in the fields of Linguistics and Psychoanalysis. Emma Bovary personifies the figure of a hysteric who, guided by a not wanting to know, has her life based on repetition, on the return of the signifiers, as if she walked in circles, in a kind of metaphorimic game, searching for what is lacking, impossible to Be assimilated. From the departure of the parents' house to the convent, the return to the paternal home; Of marriage with Charles Bovary to adulteries; And from city-to-city changes, it was from which we extracted material to analyze the significant death, which in the novel slips over the significant graveyard and poison. The wandering with the word did not allow Emma to suture a point of sufficient, although its avidity by the novels could propitiate this good. In the wandering of desire, drifting, Emma becomes drunk, even in the passions, and slips into suicide.

Determining possible differing adverbial placement between the linguistic structures of left- and right-handed writers

Ramsey, David Sanford 01 January 1998 (has links)
This thesis has attempted to determine if there are differences, concerning adverbial placement, between the sentences of left- and right-handed writers. To make this determination, I have statistically analyzed compositions of eight graduate students (four left-handed and four right-), and two left-handed published authors' (Lewis Carroll's and Mark Twains) private correspondence.

Annotating figurative language: another perspective for digital Altertumswissenschaften

Beyer, Stefan, Di Biase-Dyson, Camilla, Wagenknecht, Nina January 2016 (has links)
Whereas past and current digital projects in ancient language studies have been concerned with the annotation of linguistic elements and metadata, there is now an increased interest in the annotation of elements above the linguistic level that are determined by context – like figurative language. Such projects bring their own set of problems (the automatisation of annotation is more difficult, for instance), but also allow us to develop new ways of examining the data. For this reason, we have attempted to take an already annotated database of Ancient Egyptian texts and develop a complementary tagging layer rather than starting from scratch with a new database. In this paper, we present our work in developing a metaphor annotation layer for the Late Egyptian text database of Projet Ramsès (Université de Liège) and in so doing address more general questions: 1) How to ‚tailor-make’ annotation layers to fit other databases? (Workflow) 2) How to make annotations that are flexible enough to be altered in the course of the annotation process? (Project design) 3) What kind of potential do such layers have for integration with existing and future annotations? (Sustainability)
