León de Greiff y la tradición literaria

Ramirez Rojas, Marco 25 February 2013 (has links)
-- “León de Greiff y la tradición literaria” examines the particular concept of “tradition” underlying the work of this major XXth century Colombian poet. I contend that the appropriation of several literary and historical sources – ranging from medieval European literature, oriental sources, to the most symbolists French poets – undertaken by De Greiff challenges the classical notion of this idea. I have proposed a reading of this author’s poetry as an attempt to observe tradition as an unrestricted space of individual creation operating through aesthetic and philosophical affinities rather than strict chronological continuity. The theorical approach of my dissertation focuses on the works of Harold Bloom, T.S. Eliot and Octavio Paz. Based on their ideas I have tried to elaborate an alternative definition of the concept of Tradition.

Grappling with Patriarchies : Narrative Strategies of Resistance in Miriam Tlali's Writings

Cullhed, Christina January 2006 (has links)
This study is the first one devoted solely to the writings of the South African black novelist Miriam Tlali. It argues that her works constitute literary resistance not only to apartheid, noted by previous scholars, but also to South African patriarchies. Examining Tlali’s novels Muriel at Metropolitan (1975) and Amandla! (1980), and several short stories from Mihloti (1984) and Footprints in the Quag (1989), the study pits these texts against the black literary tradition dominated by men and also reads them within the social context of South African patriarchies, with its social restrictions on women and its taboos concerning sexualities. To distance herself from the patriarchal values inherent in the male literary tradition and to negotiate social and sexual restrictions on women, I argue, Tlali deploys narrative strategies like generic difference, generic dialogism, a double-voiced discourse, “whispering,” and “distancing.” Drawing on the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin and Julia Kristeva, this study first explores “novelistic” traits in Muriel which function both to resist male literary conventions, like the epic mode of narrative, and to criticise their patriarchal ideology. Second, relying on Bakhtin, it analyses the generic dialogism and double-voicedness in Amandla!. Finally, making use of Kristeva’s semiotics and her theory of sacrifice, the study traces the development of a sacrificial discourse of gendered violence from Amandla! to some of Tlali’s short stories. Supported by Martha J. Reinecke’s explication of Kristeva, I show that Tlali’s texts insist that gendered violence upholds the sacrificial economies of both patriarchal apartheid and African patriarchy. The strategies of “whispering” and “distancing,” I claim, surface in Tlali’s addressing of the sensitive issues of black women’s victimisation and gendered violence. “Whispering” entails muting the criticism of the perpetrators of gendered violence, whereas “distancing” results in dis/placing gendered violence on the margins of the community. This study also examines the literary/social context of Tlali’s oeuvre: it explores specific traits of the South African black literary tradition, how the issue of rape has been addressed there, and the depiction of African patriarchy in autobiographies by South African black women.

La postérité des Liaisons dangereuses : roman, théâtre, cinéma (1782-2010) / The posterity of Les Liaisons dangereuses : novel, theatre, film

Lee, Yunsoo 27 January 2011 (has links)
Studies on the reception of Laclos’ novel “Dangerous Liaisons” are numerous but they mostly focus on a small number of works and very few have a look at all the writings created under the influence of Laclos and his novel. Limited to romantic and dramatic imitations as well as to film and theatrical adaptations, this thesis analyses around forty novels, twenty plays and nine films all more or less inspired by Laclos’ novel. The first aim of this study is not to demonstrate its masterpiece status but to analyze its value and its influence through those adaptations, to examine their connections and to discern the peculiar way they comprehend it. The example of Laclos demonstrates that an author depends on the literary tradition. He was able to perfectly combine the contributions of his days and the legacy of the previous times to which his novel echoes through references and explicit or implicit allusions. In his turn, Laclos plays the role of referent in the works that came after him. His novel is probably one of the very few literary works the rich and long-time reception of which allows comprehending the evolution according to the time and the genre. Authors draw their inspiration from his novel and their works constitute an area of interpretation and new creation while Laclos owes them the recognition of his work. The second volume includes, among other things, the list of the performances of the Liaisons Dangereuses and of Quartett by Heiner Müller as well as excerpts of journalistic critics, the transcription of Charles Brabant’s film and the translation of the South Korean film Untold scandal.

The Myth And The Image Of Venice In The Novel By Ian Mcewan, “Comfort Of The Strangers”

А., Kalistratova, M. A. January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation is devoted to the study of myth and image of Venice in the novel by Ian McEwan, “Comfort of the Strangers.” The paper provides a classification of cities in the realm of semiotic studies and “locates” Venice in the existing classifications. Additionally, the work traces the evolution of the image of Venice in British literature. The specificity of the original image depicted in the novel by Ian McEwan is analyzed by comparing Venice in “Comfort of the Strangers” to one of the first literary texts of Venice – the comedy “The Merchant of Venice” and the tragedy “Othello” by William Shakespeare. The given study of the image opens up prospects for its further consideration as part of contemporary literary tradition in general, and British literature in particular, as well as to further exploration of Ian McEwan’s oeuvre.

Cultura na trincheira: literatura marginal e o chão da fricção / Culture in the trench: marginal literature and the ground of friction

Campos, Gabriel Alves de 19 April 2013 (has links)
From author Lima Barreto to Ferréz, a literary lineage emerges and is consolidating in the Country confronting the aesthetic values that governed the formation of Brazilian literature. Its artistic forms reflect the social forms of labor and are enveloped by a context of the favor culture, of wage labor and of precarious work conditions. Given this situation, it is not difficult to imagine the intersection that animates its literary forms modeled on a class aspect and on a particular fictional situation. The investigation of the political nature of this new literary lineage that proposes a formalization of the class relations in Brazil also aims to verify if the literary system proposed by Antonio Candido really applies to the new cultural configurations which rise in the Brazilian poor areas. It is well known that what mediates the relations between literary work and society arises via the form, in which reality is seen through fiction and fiction through reality, both creating a theme pendulum that hangs sometimes to one side, sometimes to another in order to achieve its content of social truth. But we can also analyze the value of a work by the triad Literature-History-Politics, in this case, the latter serving as the base of the triangle, revealing the author\'s intention. Whatever the starting point (although each reading method has its own conclusions), in the middle of the way we can note that there is a close relation between objective reality and literary reality, in which one influences the other, and the world can be seen through literature and vice-versa. If the theme of the works under consideration necessarily includes the features of barbarism of the poverty and violence in the stories studied, the studys importance is in the examination of the form of Lima Barretos, João Antônios and Ferrézs works, of the formation of the readers of those works that are by them influenced, following up this kind of literature, and of the relationship between form and formation that constitutes an articulated cultural system known as marginal literature.
