Memory and exile in the poetry of Luis CernudaLogan, Aileen A. January 2007 (has links)
Luis Cernuda (1902-1963) was exiled from Spain in 1938 due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He lived in Great Britain, America and Mexico and he never returned to his homeland. Until the mid-1960s, he was considered by the Spanish literary establishment to be an evasive and astringent poet. Since then, critics have recognised and praised the ethical quality and nature of his work and he is now considered to be one of the most profound and influential Spanish poets of the twentieth century. Despite the growing body of critical work on Cernuda, the salient role played by memory in his poetry has received little sustained critical attention. Critics have tended to stress the nostalgic and the evasive rather than the ethical and contemplative role played by memory in his work both before and after his departure from Spain. The objective of this thesis is to provide a more balanced view of the poet’s use of memory in his early and mature poetry. Rather than limiting his concept of memory to nostalgia for his youth or his homeland, it argues that he deploys memory as an instrument of self-analysis, self-discovery and self-criticism. The first chapter concentrates on his pre-exilic poetry in order to show that memory plays a fundamental role in his poetics prior to the experience of physical exile. The central body of the thesis examines the increasingly analytical and philosophical role played by memory in a selection of his mature prose and verse texts written outwith Spain.

IMAGINAIRES D'UNE VILLE : BARCELONE PAR SES PAYSAGES
UNE ÉTUDE GÉOLITTÉRAIRESavary, Sophie 24 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)

Ethnohistoric and Ethnographic Assessment of Contemporary Communities along the Old Spanish TrailStoffle, Richard W., Toupal, Rebecca, Medwied-Savage, Jessica, O'Meara, Sean, Van Vlack, Kathleen, Dobyns, Henry, Fauland, Heather January 2008 (has links)
The overall objective of this study is to compile the ethnohistory and contemporary perspectives of selected historically connected Hispanic communities that were affected by the OST. The project can be divided into two parts: 1) a brief history of each community under study and its historic relationship to the OST, and 2) a description of contemporary community views of the trail. Of special interest will be any contemporary knowledge related to the role played by the trail (and/or events related to the trail’s history and use) that affected the history and perspective of each community. Also of interest will be any places or resources along the trail that have significant cultural meaning to the subject communities.
The selected communities targeted by this project are intended to sample the range of ethnic, geographic, and historically-connected populations along the trail routes. These include Hispanic communities associated with the development of the trail, communities founded by emigrant populations known to have used sections of the trail as migration routes in the 19th century, communities that were established to support trail trade, and communities that were founded along the trail after its period of historic use. The following communities participated in this study: Abiquiú, New Mexico, Gallina, New Mexico, San Luis, Colorado, Agua Mansa, California, and San Gabriel, California.

DUENDE: FOUR PRELUDES FOR SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE BY LUIS SERRANO ALARCÓN: CONDUCTOR’S GUIDE, SPANISH HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND INFLUENCEIyescas, Kenneth Javier 01 January 2017 (has links)
Luis Serrano Alarcón is one of the most important and relevant composers of our time. He is sought after as a composer, lecturer, and conductor throughout the world. His works have been performed in over 30 countries worldwide by some of the leading musical ensembles in the United States, Europe, and Asia, as well as being highly decorated by winning many prestigious composition contests including the International Band Competition Contest of Corciano, Italy.
Born in Valencia, Spain, Alarcón is relatively self-taught in composition, which is a testament to his natural-born gift for composition. His compositional output ranges from the traditional Spanish pasodoble to chamber music, solo pieces, and sophisticated masterpieces for orchestra and wind ensemble.
His work Duende: Four Preludes for Symphonic Wind Ensemble was commissioned by the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble, Minnesota (USA) in 2010. From its premiere, it became an extremely popular piece among wind band conductors. Duende’s appeal can be attributed to its fusion of Spanish popular music, the symphonic energy of Manuel de Falla’s scores, Iberia by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, and the presence of jazz and Latin music.
A detailed conductor’s guide will be provided in this document that includes but not limited to an analysis of form and structure for each movement, conducting considerations, and rehearsal suggestions and techniques. Last but not least, an in-depth exploration into the composer’s background, Spanish musical influences, and the Spanish Band movement and traditions has been conducted. Through this process, an uncovering of intriguing and relevant points of interest have come to the surface. Alarcón’s music sounds the way it does and appeals to the masses because of the juxtaposition of its infectious, Spanish musical elements, as well as its traditional symphonic music components. Moreover, the long and historical past, culture, and traditions of Spanish Bands creates an enormous influence and motivation to compose for the wind band genre. More than two-thirds of all municipalities in Valencia, Spain have musical societies that serve as sponsors for the bands and other ensembles, provide music education, and function as a social center to the townspeople. They are also supported by the Valencian Federation of Musical Societies, all branches of government, the business community, and the media. The musical ensembles participate in both non-competitive and competitive performance activities. Non-competitive performances include concerts, wind band festivals, honor bands, and massed bands. Wind band competitions are sponsored at the municipal, provincial, regional, and international levels. Many of these performance types are combined for special celebrations like patron saint holidays, including Las Fallas and Moros y Cristianos.

The existential dimension of the liberation theology of Juan Luis SegundoTennant, Matthew Aaron January 2014 (has links)
Juan Luis Segundo (1925-1996) was a Uruguayan Jesuit priest who, I argue, based his liberation theology on his understanding of existentialism. The major contribution of this thesis is the exploration of unknown and unexplored sources in Segundo's work. These sources support my thesis of his basis in existentialism and are corroborated by his mature theology. This thesis is significant because the connection between existentialism and liberation theology has been widely overlooked. My starting point is Segundo's 1948 book, in which he combines existentialism with personalism and develops a transcendental method grounded in love and inter-subjectivity. The following three chapters develop my argument through his engagement with four existentialist thinkers: Berdyaev, Sartre and Camus, and Heidegger. Chapter 3 demonstrates how Segundo follows Berdyaev's primacy of freedom, which allows for human creativity, but Segundo takes it as a "quality of the will" and relates freedom to love. Berdyaev influences Segundo's preference for a methodology yielding consistent growth rather than a systematic approach to theology. Chapter 4 shows how Sartre's and Camus' understanding of freedom and limits influenced Segundo's sense that a person's lived reality must be the starting point for theological reflection (e.g. the hermeneutic circle). In chapter 5, I use an unpublished manuscript to show how Segundo uses the place of tradition in the Christian church and the role of tradition in Heidegger's phenomenological analysis of Dasein in order to build his theology of "liberative human seeking and divine revelation". In the final two chapters, I draw the new sources together with two of Segundo's widely read books: Faith and Ideologies (1982) in chapter 6 and The Liberation of Theology (1975) in chapter 7. In chapter 6, the transcendental method he first wrote about in 1948 returns and he addresses materialism and personalism. Chapter 7 serves as my conclusion and uses Segundo's hermeneutic circle as the fullest manifestation of my argument.

La société argentine vue par la littérature policière « décennie infâme et postménémisme » / Argentinian society as seen through detective literature : “infamous decade and post-menemist crisis”Stefanich, Fernando 04 December 2010 (has links)
The objective of this Thesis is to increase our knowledge of Argentinian society by a specific approach. We are convinced that detective literature is a metaphor of the contemporary society and that through its analysis we will arrive at a better understanding of it. Our work does not seek to give a comprehensive view of this literature but to confront literary production with two critical periods of Argentinian history: the Infamous Decade (1930-1943) and the post-Menemist crisis. Following the model created by Karl Marx (“The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoléon”) we have called them Tragedy and Farce. Our research shows the resonances between these two periods. Our research consists of a sociological approach. A sociohistorical reading of the literary texts brings us to review the whole of the twentieth century, from the modernistic precepts of the Age of Enlightenment to the hypermodernism of Gilles Lipovetsky or the liquid modernity of Zygmunt Bauman. We have organized our work according to three principal and indissociable elements: the city, the figure of the detective and the society; throughout these pages we have followed their evolution.

An Aleph: Borges, according to the The Arabian Nights: comparative study of the Arabian poetics as an element for the construction of the narrative poetics of Jorge Luis BorgesSilva, Sandra Aparecida 07 August 2008 (has links)
This study compares the poetic mimesis of the Arabic-Islamic world, specially the book of tales The Arabian Nights, with the poetic mimesis of the American- Hispanic world in Jorge Luis Borges literary production. The anonymous literary composition The Arabian Nights became the main reference to speculate both the form and the narrative construction strategies as well as the thematic contents as a poetic creation of the Argentinian author. Due to the magnitude of the borgesian literary production, this study has only considered the book El Aleph (1946) and three narratives of El libro de arena (1975) El espejo y la máscara, Undr and El disco. As a result, the study proposes to state that the Arabic- Islamic Poetics, albeit a universal cultural patrimony, constituted itself in one of the vital elements to the construction of Jorge Luis Borges Narrative Poetics

Expressões e desafios do restauro arquitetônico em edificações da arquitetura luso-brasileira no centro antigo da Cidade de São Luis (MA/Brasil) / Expressions and challenges of architectural restoration in buildings of Luso-Brazilian architecture in the Old Center of São Luis(MA/Brazil)Figueiredo, Tayana do Nascimento Santana Campos 17 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation proposes a reflection about the ways in which situations of abandonment and architectural restoration manifest, coexist and interpose, defining challenges and possibilities to the restoration of buildings of the Luso-Brazilian architecture in the Old Center of São Luis (MA, Brazil). Expressions and challenges are marked out of architectural restoration seizing them in a historical-urban context and political-institutional marked, today ,by the mismatch between the degradation of buildings of Luso-Brazilian architecture, inspired exceptionally on Pombaline buildings and the multiple discourses and certain actions, especially state actions , which, since 1970, became part of life of the city towards the protection, appreciation and preservation of architectural and paisagistic patrimony of its old center. politiceconomic and urban-territorial aspects are outlined of constitution of the Old Center of São Luis, emphasizing the determinants of the production of architectural and Luso-Brazilian patrimony and the abandonment marks that, at present, are peculiar. Elements of discourses and initiatives of protection and preservation of urban heritage are configured, in particular the actions undertaken under the Preservation and Urban Revitalization of the Historic Centre of São Luis (PPRCHSL). The theoretical contributions are approached specially by John Ruskin, Alois Riegl, Violetle- Duc, Max Dvorak, Camillo Boito, Gustavo Giovannoni and Brandi Cesari, as theoretical framework capable of contributing to the understanding of objective, theoretical and methodological dimensions relating to the abandonment and architectural restoration . Take as spatial-architectural reference of analysis the Old Center area of São Luis, listed by Department of Historic, Artistic and Paisagistic Heritage of Maranhão (DPHPA-MA), which includes the federal listed site. Delimit, by studying of four experiences of restoration; involved agents, projective specificity, challenges faced along the interventions and the potential of the restoration project as an instrument to help reversing the limits imposed by an architecture with heritage value, built by ancient construction techniques and varying degrees of neglect. We conclude that, in the Old Center of São Luis, despite the rich and fertile expressions of architectural restoration, it is still in a complex condition that manifests permeated by deterioration, neglect and interventions.
