Homem como professor de creche: sentidos e significados atribuídos pelos diferentes atores institucionais / Man as a daycare teacher: objectives and meanings assigned by different institutional players

Mára Isis de Souza 09 November 2010 (has links)
Amid the many changes that have occurred in the relationship between gender and occupation, the presence of men working in the education and care of children within collective contexts, particularly with children between 0-3 years of age, gives rise to debates that bring forth the common sense, and challenges the existing knowledge within such reality. Although few in number, the presence of men as daycare teachers has been recommended as part of policies to foster equal opportunity between men and women, the movement to professionalize the early childhood education and attempts to promote an education based in the diversity, both ethnic and gender, of role models for children. This study aims to investigate how a man becomes a daycare teacher, his relationship with colleagues, with his superiors and with the children and their families. The construction of the corpus of research, rooted in the network of meanings theoretical- methodological perspective, was made by way of: (1) visits and observations, with records in a field book of practices and relationship established by the teacher with the children, with families, with their colleagues and school management, (2) semi-structured interviews, recorded on tape and transcribed in its entirety, with the players involved in this process (teacher, colleagues, school management and families). The analysis was performed to identify the male in the relationship with coworkers, with management, with families and children. Analysis of the observation records and interviews showed that the experience of integrating a man as a daycare teacher is positive and recommended. Among the arguments presented with regards to new possibilities opened up by the presence of a man as a teacher, the male figure is strongly represented by the father image, justified especially for children who do not have a father figure in their families. As far as the childrens hygiene and use of toilet, the decision of the school management, embraced by the team, was to remove the male teacher from the girls bathroom activities, which prevented the emergence of conflicts and became a tool to reassure the childrens families. As a result of this integration, the possibility of teachers interacting with the families, even if indirectly by way of reports and childrens manifestation, seems to bring about a (re)signification of the presence of a man teacher at the daycare, which moves away from the initial strangeness to the establishment of a trusted relationship with this professional.

Manly bodies: theorizing masculinities through affect

Bethune, Stephanie 08 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines theoretical paradigms within men and masculinities studies (MMS), introducing a new materialist lens through the work of Elizabeth Grosz and Brian Massumi. Two affective dimensions of MMS are explored through the application of this new materialist lens: the affect of wonder and flat affect. These two concepts can be understood as expressions of Spinoza’s two types of affects; joyful affects, or those affects that increase a body’s capacity for movement, and sad affects, or those affects that decrease a body’s capacity for movement. The affect of wonder, a joyful affect, is theorized in conversation with antiviolence and therapeutic masculinity initiatives. Flat affect, a sad affect, is theorized in conversation with Canadian men’s suicide rates. This thesis argues that dominant forms of masculinity orient subjects away from wonder and towards an unlivable state characterized by flat affect. Men and masculinities studies theory lacks applied engagement with affect, and this thesis contributes to efforts to address this lack. / Graduate

Gender in Equestria: An Examination of Reconstituted Forms of Masculinity and Their Consequences for Gender Relations in the Brony Community

Zachary D Palmer (6589841) 15 May 2019 (has links)

In this dissertation, I analyze the Brony community to better understand reconstituted forms of masculinity. Specifically, I focus on the following questions: What does it mean when men incorporate what has traditionally been viewed as stigmatized or feminine into their gender presentations? How do these forms of masculinity represent a challenge to gender politics and how do they reinforce gender inequality? How do women navigate spaces defined by reconstituted forms of masculinity? In what ways do women within these spaces both challenge and maintain power relations? I address these questions through an analysis of interviews with 43 men and women who are fans of My Little Pony and ethnographic observations at four My Little Pony fan conventions. In doing so, this dissertation nuances and extends the literature on reconstituted forms of masculinity, including hybrid masculinities.

A Portrait of the Artist as an Angry Young Man: Masculinities and the Male Artist in Twentieth-Century British Literature

Gan, Wanghui 25 September 2020 (has links)
Influenced by post-Lacanian psychoanalytic feminist theory and Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity, this project examines three fictional brooding male writers from three separate periods of twentieth-century Ireland and Britain and their performances of authenticity, authority, and exceptionalism as artist figures. By tracing a sociohistorical arc and conducting close literary analyses, this project argues that the myth of white male artistic genius is derived from the power and privilege of a cult of individuality that can be used to excuse and justify harmful behaviour and that comes at the exclusion and expense of those outside this highly specific version of hegemonic masculinity. James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, and Sarah Kane’s Blasted undermine the myth of male artistic genius by exposing the artificial and theatrical nature of the notion of “authenticity” and the posture of being countercultural when one is part of a dominating elite.

Shaping the boys’ South African identity: Suppressed queer space in spud and Inxeba

Willows, Joshua Peter January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The purpose of this study is to explore how “queerness” is both represented and suppressed in select South African fiction. The study will investigate to what extent a post-colonial form of education reinforces the colonial and apartheid traditions of South African normative masculinities in same-sex, educational environments. These aspects will be explored and investigated in John Van de Ruit‟s Spud: A wickedly funny novel (2005), Spud: The madness continues… (2007), Spud: Learning to Fly (2010), and will be complemented with an investigation of the recent South African film, Inxeba (2017). The series of novels and films demonstrate how the contestation between queerness and traditional masculinity threatens heteronormativity and how various forms of violence try to enforce a dominant South African masculinity.

Fatherlessness among young black South African men

Mbobo, Siyabonga 30 March 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Scholars confirm that a huge proportion of black South African men are not participating in their children's upbringing, as a result, children face various challenges that impede their wellbeing. This study is of the view that there is still a need for further investigations to explore the effects of fatherlessness on children's wellbeing and to gain new perspectives on father absence within the context of black societies in South Africa. With that in mind, this study aimed to explore the impact of fatherlessness on the psychosocial wellbeing of young black South African men. The objectives of this study included investigating the following: (1) young men's experiences of growing up without their biological fathers; (2) the psychosocial effects of growing up without a biological father on young black men; (3) the ways in which fatherlessness shapes the development of a gendered (masculine) identity among young black men; and (4) to understand the ways in which fatherlessness shapes young men's participation in cultural practices that facilitate their transition to manhood (e.g. ulwaluko). A qualitative approach research approach was adopted for this study. Semi-structured interviews (face to face) were used for data collection, and both purposive sampling and snowball sampling methods were used to recruit participants for this study. The interviews were conducted with twenty-four (24) young black men (participants) who shared their experiences of growing up without the presence of their biological fathers. These participants resided in Langa township (Western Cape). The interviews were conducted during the third wave of Covid-19, so all the protocols to safeguard the spread of Covid-19 were observed. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. It further drew on the psychosocial developmental theory by Erik Erickson (1963) as a lens through which it reflects on young men's developmental processes and the ways in which such development is shaped by the absence of biological fathers. The findings suggest that many of the participants' conceptions of the roles of fathers were in line with the traditional views of fathers as financial providers, protectors, and disciplinarians. The results of this study also gave insight into challenges faced by young black men who grew up without their biological fathers. These challenges were related to their cultural identity, which then affected their capacity to build intimate relationships, affected them when they were undergoing ulwaluko, and affected their constructions of masculinity. Fatherlessness was also shown to have a negative impact on the education and psychosocial wellbeing of the young black men in the study.

[en] The purpose of this study is to analyze the contribution of the project papo cabeça for the care of sexual and reproductive health, from the perpective of male adolescent who were seved by this project. Masculinities and the Paedophile: Discursive Strategies in Irish Newspapers.

Galvin, Miriam January 2009 (has links)
This study examines the ways in which men who relate sexually to children, identified in the press as paedophiles, are represented in four leading newspapers in the Republic of Ireland in the period from 2003-2005. Utilising a qualitative research methodology namely critical discourse analysis, a social constructionist approach and informed by post-structural perspectives, this research examines the ways in which the masculinities of the man represented as `the paedophile¿ are constructed. This research demonstrates how the normative is reinforced through the delegitimation of the masculinities of these men. The discursive regimes and cultural scenarios drawn upon in representations of `the paedophile¿ reflect degrees of deviation from hegemonic masculinity in an always already `deviant¿ group of men. Inactive heterosexuality and homosexuality are not hegemonic masculine practices, and the masculinity of supposedly, celibate clergymen and homosexual men is discursively subordinated. A consideration of the material dimensions of these discourses, illustrates how the media representation of men who relate sexually to children, confirms the normative contours of society and strategically excludes hegemonic masculinity and the wider society from association with adult male sexual interaction with children.

National Security, Gendered Insecurity : Feminist Perspectives on Militarism, Masculinities & Security / Nationell Säkerhet, Genderiserad Osäkerhet : Feministiska Perspektiv på Militarism, Maskuliniteter & Säkerhet

Viklund, Åsa January 2019 (has links)
