Reading allows for the construction of a new world within the mind as one centralises and processes the literature. Flipping from one page to the next the language and the typography guides and informs this spatial construction and directs us through this new world. It creates an intangible architecture of the mind. In the physical realm however, we experience the real world directly and blatantly without the aid of texts and narratives. In this life the relationship between text and space is inverted. Here text and narrative do not inform the construction and tactile experience of space but rather act as a backdrop to everyday life. It seems to go unnoticed. This dissertation aims to emphasise the importance of typography, text and narrative within not only our day-to-day functionings, but also in the architectural realm. It seeks an amalgamation of typography, museum and public space, and aspires to create a place where the seemingly unnoticed typeface can be showcased, propagated and made accessible. This thesis is a critical inquiry of the relationship between the architectural aspects of the museum space and the collection on display, regarding to the concept of flexibility. Inside the museum, displayed object can be thought as a two folded representation which can be termed as labeling. Museum space can be thought as the juxtaposed condition of these two bodies of the object. The flexible spatial organization of the museum space is accepted to support the ephemeral character of labeling. Within this context, the concept of flexibility will be analyzed through the cooperative reading of George Pompidou Center and Grand Egyptian Museum. With the aid of concepts of flexibility and hypertextuality that are adopted in these two cases, the study tries to reveal the relationship between the architectural potentials of museum space and the collection belongs to these particular museums. In that respect, the architectural programs of these competitions will be critically reconsidered in order to reveal how the institutions conceive the collections with their expected physical ramifications.

Through the establishment of how the heritage museum space has changed since the implementation of technology, gives a response concerning new perspective in the experience economy. Connecting Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s characteristics of flow together with Jane McGonigal’s theory of alternate gaming can serve the visitor to invest in their own learning outcomes, thus invest more in cultural heritage. Nevertheless also how visitors can experience cultural heritage as one but at the same time as a community, participating through a common ‘goal’.

Cette thèse propose d’étudier les enjeux et les répercussions de l’introduction du dispositif de la réalité augmentée dans l’espace muséal assurant, de ce fait, deux fonctions principales : « médium de médiation » et « médium de création ».La première partie s’intéresse à la présentation de la réalité augmentée. Elle précise, en premier lieu, sa définition, son histoire d’invention, ses différents outils techniques, ainsi que ses multiples usages dans différents domaines d’application. Elle essaie, en deuxième lieu, de démontrer, à partir de l’analyse de quelques expériences artistiques pionnières, l’ancrage de la réalité augmentée dans l’histoire de l’art. La deuxième partie consacrée à la « mise en scène » de l’espace muséal, examine, d’abord, l’implication de la réalité augmentée dans la mise en place de deux stratégies de « médiation in situ » : « médiation documentaire » et « médiation par appropriation ». Ensuite, elle ambitionne, en se référant à quelques exemples de musées, de dégager les principaux avantages et inconvénients liés à l’adoption de la réalité augmentée comme « médium de médiation ». Axée sur la « mise en oeuvre » de l’espace muséal, la troisième partie aborde la réalité augmentée comme étant un « médium de création ». De l’analyse des étapes du processus de création de celle-ci, il en découle, enfin, la mise en évidence de notions corollaires telles que : hacktivisme, « musée portatif », « ville augmentée ». / This thesis proposes to study the issues and the repercussions of the introduction of the augmented reality device in the museum space, thus ensuring two main functions : "medium of mediation" and "medium of creation".The first part focuses on the presentation of augmented reality. It specifies, firstly, its definition, its history of invention, its various technical tools, and its multiple uses in different fields of application. Secondly, it try to demonstrate, from the analysis of some pioneering artistic experiences, the anchoring of augmented reality in the history of art. The second part devoted to the "staging" of the museum space, examines first, the involvement of augmented reality in the setting up of two "in situ mediation" strategies : "documentary mediation" and "mediation by appropriation". Then, it aims to identify, by referring to a few examples of museums, to the main advantages and disadvantages of adopting augmented reality as a "mediation medium". Axed on the "implementation" of the museum space, the third part studies augmented reality as a "medium of creation". First, it presents the history of the transition from the museum space of exhibition to a "work-exhibition". Then, it focus its interest on the work We AR in MoMA (2010) of the collective Manifest.AR. From the analysis of the stages of the creation process of this one, it results, finally, the highlighting of corollary notions such as : hacktivism, "handled museum", "augmented city".

Casas-museus ou museus-casas incluem a diversidade étnica e cultural, geram conhecimentos e nos transportam ao passado por caminhos históricos; preservam modos de viver, desafiando o visitante/ receptor. Essa tipologia de museu encerra-se em torno de sua coleção e de seus espaços. A arquitetura parte da atividade interior buscando os focos de luz natural e perspectivas do entorno. A partir da hipótese de que as casas-museus devem ser adaptadas e como essa adaptação acontece, o objetivo da pesquisa foi criar um panorama com as principais características observadas nessa tipologia de museu, analisando suas adaptações de casa para o uso casa-museu. Conhecer e interpretar sete instituições em São Paulo, ressaltando aspectos marcados pela passagem do espaço doméstico privado para o espaço museológico público, com auxílio dos projetos, tornou-se o ponto de partida. Na transformação da casa em museu, muitos fatores são articulados; a rotina da casa será diferente enquanto museu. Não é casa e não é museu. Based on the hypothesis that museum houses should be adapted and how this adaptation happens, the objective of the research was to create a panorama with the main characteristics observed in this typology of museum, analyzing their adaptations from home to home-museum use. Knowing and interpreting seven institutions in São Paulo, highlighting aspects marked by the passage of the private domestic space to the public museum space, with the help of the projects, became the starting point. The author proves that the virtualization of the museum space and the increasing role of audiovisual communication are associated with the processes of technological and sociocultural development of society in the information age. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the analysis of new methodological aspects of audiovisual culture and communication, their role in the virtualization of the modern museum as an institution for the preservation of cultural memory. A l’heure où la plupart des musées investissent dans des sites Internet qui rendent souvent une grande partie de leurs collections accessibles à distance, la mission du musée en tant que lieu physique d’accès aux œuvres est remise en question. Le rapport aux publics doit être repensé : la nature de sa relation aux œuvres est transformée, et l'émergence du concept de visite augmentée introduit des dispositifs renouvelés de médiation au sein même de l’espace muséal. Cette thèse rend compte d’une expérimentation de terrain autour de Muséo+, outil de médiation de contenus muséographiques au moyen de dispositifs techno-pragmatiques interactifs. L’ensemble des contenus numériques est accessible, via l’application, sur une tablette tactile. Le dispositif et l’application qu’il supporte ont été conçus pour accompagner et guider la découverte du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, in situ, au cours d’une expérience de visite physique dans les lieux. Ils s’adressent à tous les enfants de 6 à 12 ans, sans et avec handicap divers (surdité, autisme, déficience intellectuelle, précocité) : ce travail s’inscrit ainsi dans une réflexion sur le Design for all (aussi appelée conception universelle). La question de l'accessibilité intellectuelle et sensible est au cœur de ce travail, qui propose un retour d’expérience sur l’appropriation de contenus culturels. Le point de vue adopté consiste à observer et à qualifier une expérience de visite physique avec accompagnement numérique, et les mécanismes de construction de sens mobilisés. / At a time when most museums invest in websites that often make much of their collections accessible from a distance, the museum's mission as a physical place where people can access the works is in question. The relationship to the public must be reconsidered : the nature of the relationship to the works is thus transformed, and the emergence of the concept of enhanced tours has introduced devices which should renew mediation within the museum space. This thesis reports a field experiment around Muséo +, a mediation tool which makes museum content available through interactive techno-oriented devices. All the content is accessible via the application, on a digital tablet. The tablet and the application have been designed to support and guide the discovery of the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille, in situ, during a physical tour. It is available for all children from age 6 to 12, with and without disabilities (deafness, autism, developmental disabilities, Precocity) : this work is thus part of a reflection on the Design for All (also called Universal Design). The issue of intellectual and sensitive accessibility is central in this work, offering feedback on the appropriation of cultural content. The approach taken is to observe and describe a physical visit experience with digital assistance and the processus used for the construction of meaning.

Quadrature de la rotonde : archipel de trois lieux d'exposition pour une exploration du rôle médiatique de l'espace muséal circulaireSeguy, Clara 08 1900 (has links)
Les musées d’art exposent leurs œuvres selon les modalités de curation et l’architecture même du lieu. Ce mémoire en recherche-création interroge le rôle de médium de l’espace d’exposition en s’appuyant sur un double cadre théorique : les approches matérielles des études médiatiques et la muséologie (études muséales et curatoriales).
Les nombreuses spécificités du musée rotond en font un cas particulier récurrent et pertinent pour analyser la manière dont ces courbes spécifiques de l’espace muséal agissent sur l’approche curatoriale d’une exposition et l’expérience qui en découle pour le visiteur. À travers la forme médiatique qu’est le guide d’exposition, il s’agit d’explorer la présentation sur une feuille rectangulaire d’un espace d’exposition circulaire.
Trois espaces significatifs font l’objet d’une étude de cas et définissent le cadre de création : la galerie des Nymphéas au Musée de l’Orangerie (Paris, 1927), le Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, 1959) et la Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection (Paris, 2021).
Ce mémoire en recherche-création expérimente la dimension médiatique de l’espace rotond par un processus de remédiation du guide d’exposition qui vise à retranscrire matériellement la circularité de ces lieux. Animée par l’analogie entre le circulaire et l’insulaire et investissant leurs modes de représentation, j’y conçois un outil de médiation qui accompagne le visiteur dans sa découverte spatiale du musée rotond et au-delà, le promène dans une itération archipélagique, d’un cercle muséal à l’autre. Chacun des trois musées rotonds de ce pèlerinage offre un fragment de l’expérience à collecter qui, au fil des visites, formera par assemblage l’itinéraire complet et accompli d’une médiation au sein de lieux à l’exposition circulaire. Navigation inédite dans l’archipel Rotonda pour composer son Museario rotondo.
Par une approche non-linéaire, tant dans l’aspect théorique et conceptuel que méthodologique, je m’intéresse aux interstices du rotond interrogeant matérialités, possibilités et affordances du circulaire.
De l’histoire du rond dans un carré. / Art museums exhibit artworks according to curation methods and the architecture of the building itself. This art-based research thesis questions the medium role of the exhibition space using a double theoretical framework: materialist approach in media studies and museum studies paired with curatorial studies.
The numerous specificities of the circular museum convert it into a special case, recurrent and pertinent to analyze the way these specific curves of the museum space act on the curatorial approach of an exhibition and the related experience for the visitor. Threw the media object that the exhibition guide is shaping, the purpose here is to explore the presentation on a rectangular sheet of a circular exhibition space.
Three indicative spaces form case studies and define the framework for the creation phase: the Water Lilies Gallery at Musée de L’Orangerie (Paris, 1927), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, 1959) and the Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection (Paris, 2021).
This art-based research thesis experiments with the media dimension of the rotunda space by remediating the exhibition guide in order to transliterate materially the roundness of those places. Motivated by an analogy between circularity and insularity and investing in their representation forms, I design a mediation tool that guides the visitor in his spatial discovery of the rotunda museum and beyond, walks him threw an archipelagic iteration, from a circle museum to another. Each of the three rotunda museums of this pilgrimage offers a fragment of the experience to be collected which, over the visits, will form by assembly the complete and accomplished itinerary of a mediation within places of circular exhibition. Unprecedented navigation in the Rotonda archipelago to compose the Museario rotondo.
Through a non-linear approach, as much as in the theoretical aspect as conceptual and methodological ones, I am interested in the interstices of the rotunda, questioning materialities, possibilities, and affordances of the circular.
