Effects of a task analytic and a traditional approach to music instruction on musical performance and attitude of emtionally disturbed students

Hom, Candice M. 01 January 1991 (has links)
This study compared a task analytic versus a traditional approach to teaching a musical instrument to emotionally disturbed children. Students' musical performance and attitude toward the instruction were compared between conditions. Six severely emotionally disturbed boys, 8-11 years of age, participated in the study. Each student learned to play a one, two, and three chord song accompaniment on an omnichord under the two experimental conditions. At the end of each condition and two weeks following the termination of the study, each student was asked to perform the three-chord songs. Their performances were videotaped for future analyses by two independent observers. In addition to the performance ratings, the students completed a questionnaire concerning their attitudes toward the instruction. This questionnaire also served as a dependent measure. No statistically significant differences were found among the performance ratings and student attitudes between conditions. Implications for music therapy practice and future research are given.

Kvalita v praxi českých muzikoterapeutů / Quality in Practice of Czech Music Therapists

Fajfrová, Jitka January 2010 (has links)
Master thesis Quality in Practice of Czech Music Therapists deals with the theoretical and empirical research of the quality-in-practice-of-Czech-music-therapists phenomenon. This is realized both in the national and the European context. It develops the previous thesis Recent directions in Czech Music Therapy and focuses on monitoring the process of professionalization. Theoretical part of the thesis is divided into four sections. First section discusses the quality in general. It introduces systems of quality management and methods of detection. It gives an overview of the quality in the sectors of the economy where music therapy is implemented. Second section deals with the music therapy and especially the Czech music therapy. It replies the following questions: Who is music therapist? What are the recent directions of the music therapy? And the key personalities? It introduces current development stage in field: the stage of institutialization. Third section deals with the European music therapy and its relationship to quality. Fourth section monitors quality in the field of Czech music therapy and related expressive therapies. At the end there is a summary of some important questions and challenges for the future development of the profession. Empirical part is dedicated to qualitative...

Systematic Review of Alternative Therapies to Treat Cancer Pain

Bonilla Carmona, Karla Michelle 01 January 2019 (has links)
Cancer pain is a complex symptom that affects the quality of life of oncology patients, caregivers, and families. The limitations of pain management treatment for cancer patients can be attributed to the lack of knowledge and availability of nonpharmacological treatments. The purpose of this project was to identify and gather evidence on the effectiveness of nonpharmacological interventions in the treatment of cancer pain using the methodology of a systematic review. Watson's theory of human caring supported the project by incorporating the perception of treating the human being holistically during the illness process. The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model provided a structured approach to address the practice problem and practice-focused question. The tools used to assess the quality and synthesize the findings of the studies were the Research and Evidence Appraisal Tool and the Synthesis Process and Recommendations Tool. The practice-focused question explored whether nonpharmacological interventions could be used to complement opioid treatments for cancer pain. A systematic review of the literature indicated 11 studies in which 2 interventions--music therapy and exercise--addressed the practice-focused question. Psychological distress, decreased physical function, and decreased involvement in social activities can all be attributed to the poor management of cancer pain. The study of alternatives to opioids could support social change by increasing the knowledge of healthcare professionals and the range of treatment options for pain management in cancer patients.

Music and Conflict Resolution: Can a Music and Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?

Bassalé, Parfait Adegboyé 03 September 2013 (has links)
The Story and Song Centered Pedagogy (SSCP) is a workshop that uses songs, stories and reflective questioning to increase empathy. This preliminary study tested the prediction that being exposed to the SSCP would increase empathy using, the Emotional Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT) subscales of the renowned Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1990). Subjects self-reported their answers to the IRI before and after undergoing the SSCP intervention. Comparing their pre and post intervention results, no statistically significant changes were noticed for the EC and PT scales (p-value = 0.7093 for EC; p-value = 0.6328 for PT). These results stand in direct tension with the anecdotal evidence gathered from 10 years of action research that shows that the SSCP impacts audiences' ability to empathize. This opens the door for additional research with more rigorous methodology and a larger sample size which will allow for more interpretative analysis. These results also probe the concern about whether the IRI is the most suitable tool to quantitatively measure the empathetic responses caused by the SSCP and evidenced by action research.

Songs Portraying The Lived Experience Of Mental Illness / The Lived Experience of Mental Illness as Portrayed in Songs Written by Adults Living With Serious Mental Illness

Vander Kooij, Cynthia 11 1900 (has links)
Abstract Existing healthcare treatments and services for people living with serious mental illness pose a challenge for both the service provider and the recipient of care. While recovery oriented care is a priority, many healthcare practices and contextual factors pose a barrier to recovery. This study augments our awareness of the authentic lifeworld of people living with serious mental illness with the aim of gaining insights that can be used to develop healthcare practices which support recovery. This study explored the subjective experiences of people living with SMI as they expressed them through co-creative songwriting. Through a hermeneutic phenomenological analysis based in the philosophical groundwork of Heidegger and Gadamer, a thematic representation of the lifeworld of people living with SMI was developed. The findings are described in three parts: becoming broken, becoming whole and experiencing the lifeworld as transformed. Becoming broken is explored in four themes including fragmented inner and outer worlds, pain, despair and suicide. Becoming whole is achieved through catalysts of change that include connection, the sacred, beauty, and resilience. This representation is depicted using a tapestry metaphor to picture the lifeworld as torn, mended and transformed. The findings demonstrate that transformation is a spiritual process. Additionally the potential impact of the study on stigma and perceptions of mental illness is discussed. The findings are considered within the framework of Antonovsky’s theory of salutogensis. A resulting salutogenic model of mental illness and mental health as transformation is proposed. The implications for theory, research and practice are discussed in relation to the areas of recovery, salutogenesis, positive psychology and spirituality. The study recommends greater inclusion of spirituality, creative processes, and a focus on positive psychology as underutilized resources to enhance healthcare for people living with SMI. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Musik som omvårdnadsåtgärd vid demens : hur påverkas personer med beteendemässiga och psykiska symtom? / Music in dementia care : how does it affect people with behavioural and psychological symptoms?

Karlsson, Amanda, Söderlund, Janina January 2021 (has links)
Background  It is estimated that 50 million people live with dementia worldwide, and by 2030, the number is expected to rise to 82 million people. Most people with dementia experiences behavioural and psychological symptoms which causes suffering, lowered quality of life and earlier institutionalisation for the person. Non-pharmacological, person-centered care is prioritized for people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Music listening is a simple non-pharmacological act of care which can be executed by nurses in hospitals as well as nursing homes. Aim The aim was to describe how music listening as an act of care affects people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Method The method was a non-systematic literature review. The result was based on 15 scientific articles of quantitative methods. The databases used for data collection were Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and PubMed. The quality of the articles were assessed using Sophiahemmet Högskolas quality assessment tool. The result was compiled using integrative analysis where the result was divided into appropriate categories. Results Music listening affected several of the behavioural and psychological symptoms and well-being. The majority of the studies showed a positive impact. The most emerging results were decreased agitation and increased well-being. Music listening had an impact on the person immediately. A long-term impact was measured in some studies. Conclusions The compilation of the studies implied that music listening has a positive impact by decreasing behavioural and psychological symptoms and increasing well-being for people with dementia, especially when used from a person-centered perspective. There is a need for empirical studies of qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding, as well as further literature reviews including studies that use the same assessment tools.

The effects of music and metronomic beat on heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, and physical endurance prior to a heart rate cut-off

Louie, Cheryl Ann 01 January 1989 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined the effects of music and metronomic beat on heart rate (HR). ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). and physical endurance in healthy females ages 18 to 30. Volunteers were screened via a health questionnaire and the Astrand Work Test on a Monark bicycle ergometer. yielding a predicted aerobic working capacity (V02) of 28 mililiters or more. The 30 subjects were then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions (music or metronome group) for a cycling test at 75% capacity. HR and Borg RPE were measured repeatedly, with a posttest measure of physical endurance (kilometers travelled). No significant differences were found between the groups in HR. RPE. or kilometers travelled. A music questionnaire administered to the music group following the posttest examined the subjects' preference for and familiarity with the music, perceived and preferred volume, and experience with music. Trends and suggestions for future research are discussed.
