A child with Down syndrome (CDS) has several limitations and difficulties which occur in motor development, cognitive development and communication at different levels, especially with regard to speech. Helping a CDS to win his place in society will stimulate their satisfaction for somehow feeling to be useful, further expanding their coexistence. Children with this syndrome may perform better when those around them recognize that they have limitations, but also potential and abilities. This research deals with the use of Therapeutic Choir with CDS. Had become the main goal is to understand the effects that music therapy, through Therapeutic Choir, can bring in order to improve the performance of a CDS, according to the Theory of Multiple Intelligences proposed by Gardner. This is a qualitative research and it was based on Existential Phenomenology. Data collecting was performed at Down Association of Goiás (ASDOWN). The work was initially conducted with a group of six participants in the beginning and with four children in the end over a four months period, with a weekly frequency and duration of fifty minutes therapy session. Data collecting involved music therapy dossiers, audio and video recordings of cases, descriptive reports, observations of the participants behavior, interviews with those responsible for the CDS and professionals who have worked directly with some children, whether in a therapeutic or education environment. The analysis of all qualitative data was performed with the support of the theoretical review, which included Music Therapy, Therapeutic Choir and Multiple Intelligences. At the end of the music therapy process, it was found an increase of specifics skills in Multiple Intelligences, mainly in the following kinesthetic intelligences-body, linguistic, musical, inter- and intrapersonal, because the through the creative re-experiences, experiments and amenable and additional activities can stimulate the CDS development providing progress in the acquisitions processes.

Uma visão psicossocial do papel da música na umbanda e na reorganização das id/ entidades / A psychosocial view of the role of music in umbanda and the reorganization of id/entities

Gregório José Pereira de Queiroz 30 March 2017 (has links)
Investigating it\'s role in these rituals and, hereby, it\'s role in human life is the purpose of this dissertation. The first step is to closely analyse music\'s nature as well as the nature of the elements present in the music performed in Umbandist rites, it\'s melody and rhythm, and the relation between music and human being in a social, individual and neurological level. The second step is to investigate the concepts of identity, dissociation, mediumship, alterated conciousness, trance and incorporation. Then the relation between music and trance are revised, in accordance with Rouget\'s proposed concepts, authors on music therapy and others who studied the relation between trance and percussion. A brief historic on Umbanda and the terreiro lineage I personally come from, as well as the physical activity which engages with music in this particular terreiro, are presented next, establishing my own experience in Umbandist incorporation. The music utilized is such rituals is presented here through music sheets with commentaries on it\'s musical character and lyrics, as well as the agency of the nature of music at the time of incorporation. It was found that music acts along with both the social context and the individual\'s own intentions in order to contribute to the process of incorporation. Music can distend the forces which organize an individual\'s identities leaving them open to mobility, both physical and subjective, when this subject engages with music. In Umbanda, the involvement happens through a preliminary dance which is practiced before incorporations. The work of incorporating or modifying one own\'s identity results from the musical stimulation, from the stimulation of the social context of the rite and from the intention of the subject who is disposed to the process, occurring then a sliding from the habitual identity to another, designed throughout the rites, which allows incorporeal entities to manifest itself, according to the religion\'s beliefs

The affects of exercise and brain plasticity, discussed in relation to Functional oriented Music Therapy; a theoretical study

Carlsson, Josefine January 2007 (has links)
Abstract This essay examines which role functional oriented music therapy, which is supposed to help sensorimotor development, can have in schools and in health care. To find this out, research about what kinds of effects exercise can have on academic achievements and in recovery from brain injuries has been brought up. The research concerning academic achievements was conducted with school children; some children without difficulties, some with sensory integration problems, and some with motor skill difficulties. In addition to this, research about the brain structure superior colliculus, which lies behind sensory integration, is also brought up. The results showed that children who were given more exercise had significantly better scores in academic skills than the children with normal academic education. Thus, it might be reasonable to practise functional oriented music therapy in schools, both as helping general development, but also for children with different types of difficulties. The research concerning exercise and injuries has made clear that the adult brain can change via neurogenesis, plasticity and cortical reorganization. These three aspects are important when practicing a skill or when recovering from an injury. Exercise has been shown to affect these three aspects positively and can therefore also aid the recovery from injuries. Thus, there seems to be many theoretical aspects supporting the FMT- method. However, the question is if the results of one treatment form can generalize over such a wide range of injuries and defects that the FMT –adepts usually have. It is therefore also discussed if further experiments on the FMT-method could help make it a more effective tool for rehabilitation.

[en] MUSIC, ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES AND THE EXPRESSION OF INTERNAL CONTENT / [pt] MÚSICA, ADULTOS COM DEFICIÊNCIAS E A EXPRESSÃO DE CONTEÚDOS INTERNOS

RAFAEL LIMA DOS SANTOS 01 August 2017 (has links)
[en] Strongly present in human trajectory, music has always had its place of honor as the language of emotions. This dissertation aimed to amplify this concept and ponder about said language in its potential of sense unveiling, particularly in the treatment of adults with deficiency. This work discussed the role of the patients musical production as legit manifestation of cognitive, aesthetic, cultural, life and communication content, with music being a concrete possibility for these adults to read into reality - and, as interactive players, to put themselves in it. Questions such as human development and deficiency, music therapy, language and musical improvisation were part of a theoretical foundation which, inside the clinic of the adult with deficiency, validated the premises of integration and organization needed by this adult. The conclusion that resulted from this study is that, with its intended objectives and having the results critically analyzed, the research fulfilled its prerogative of music as therapeutic treatment and potentially promising of manifesting internal content. Furthermore, new ideas were thought out in order to optimize not only the therapeutic work with music but also provide to this population a freeing experience marked by expressive creativity and pleasure.

Music therapy and the relationship between a mother and a toddler with a disability

Brown, Tanya 29 October 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is a qualitative study of the relationship between a mother and a toddler with a disability. This study was conducted with both a mother and toddler at the Baby Therapy Centre in Pretoria, a facility that caters for babies and toddlers between the ages of birth to three years with special needs and developmental delays. The purpose of this research was to explore how the medium of music throughout a process of eight music therapy sessions might afford a mother and toddler with a disability opportunities for relating. Throughout the course of the music therapy process, moments of play, communication and meaningful interaction occurred between the mother and toddler, indicating a shift in the mother-toddler relationship, thereby advocating for the inclusion of mothers in music therapy sessions. The research approach adopted in this dissertation includes an in-depth case study of one mother-toddler pair, using interviews and thick descriptions of video excerpts as the main data sources. The findings from this research indicate that music therapy affords a mother and toddler with a disability opportunities to relate within sessions through play, musical interaction, instrumental play, vocal use and improvisation. The inclusion of the mother in music therapy sessions appeared to enhance the mother-toddler relationship, in addition to the learned transference of skills that the toddler acquired during the process. Exploring the value of collaboration between music therapy and physiotherapy in South Africa in sessions with clients with Cerebral Palsy

Erasmus, Anine Carolien 29 October 2012 (has links)
Literature has indicated that music therapy has many physical benefits for individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and that these benefits hold much potential for music therapy application within physiotherapy sessions. Collaboration between music therapy and physiotherapy in work with these individuals, however, has not yet been explored in a South African context and no studies include physiotherapists‟ perspectives on the matter. This research study has begun to bridge this gap by exploring music therapy and physiotherapy collaboration in a South African context and by looking for new insights concerning physiotherapists‟ perspectives. Data for this study was collected from a process in which I, as music therapy student, collaborated with a physiotherapist in sessions with clients with CP over a period of six sessions. Data included semi-structured interviews with physiotherapist participants; session notes written by the music therapy student as part of participant observation; and video-excerpts of meaningful moments from the collaborative sessions. The data indicated that collaboration has the potential to afford many physical, emotional/relational and psychological benefits for clients with CP, although there were some challenging features which also emerged throughout the process. The different therapists‟ perceptions also revealed some of the collaborative dynamics which can emerge during such a process, as well insights as into the requirements for effective collaboration. A profile of needs : Music Therapy with HIV infected children in a South African institution

Griffiths, Mikaela Ceridwen 23 February 2005 (has links)
This dissertation profiles the needs of abandoned or orphaned, HIV affected or infected children living in a South African institution. The purpose of my research is to identify the needs of the children; then identify how the staff within the institution perceive that they provide for these needs; and lastly look at what Music Therapy as a discipline can offer the children in regards to the needs identified. Interviews with fulltime and part-time staff members suggest that the needs of the children relate mainly to a lack of individual attention. Inconsistent quality of care and limited opportunities for forming attachments to specific caregivers were identified foremost as resulting in difficulties with forming and maintaining relationships and social functioning with peer members and staff members, in the institutional social cultural context. The therapeutic relationship offered to the children in Music therapy sessions offers opportunities to address the individual and social needs identified. / Dissertation (MMus (Music Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Music / unrestricted
