Investigação do processo de foto-ionização associativa em situações com baixa dimensão / Photoassociative ionization in situations with low dimensions

Rafael Rothganger de Paiva 17 February 2009 (has links)
Photoassociative ionization (PAI) in a cold sample of sodium atoms was the main subject of our studies as a way to understand the effects of repulsive states and collision dimensions. Two-color PAI experiment were preformed in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) trough the addition of a probe laser beam, the intensity, polarization and frequency of that probe laser were tunable. The shape of the trapped atoms also could be changed. In a spherical shape MOT, we observed a marked change in the PAI rate constant (K) for a definite frequency range, and that change can be attributed to the influence of repulsive molecular states and the a possible formation of an avoided crossing between molecular levels. In atomotron, ring shaped mot, we changed the polarization of the probe beam, and saw that the ratio between K for a polarization parallel to the atoms motion and a perpendicular one is 4. Comparing the K as a function of the intensity between a spherical shaped mot and atomotron showed us a difference in the behavior and the value of the rate constant.

Measurements of the time evolution of coherent excitation

Camp, Howard Alan January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Physics / B.D. DePaola / In recent years, coherent excitation techniques have focused on the ability to efficiently prepare atomic or molecular systems into a selected state. Such population control plays a key role in cutting-edge research taking place today, such as in the areas of quantum information and laser-controlled chemical reactions. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a widely-used coherent excitation technique that provides a relatively robust control mechanism for efficiently exciting a target population into a desired state. While the technique is well proven, current experimental techniques yield little information on the population dynamics taking place throughout the excitation process, and experimentalists rely solely on final excited-state measurements to determine the efficiency of population transfer. This dissertation presents a unique diagnostic tool to measure multilevel coherent population transfer on a short (nanosecond) timescale. The technique described here uses magneto-optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS) as a noninvasive probe of a coherently-controlled system. It provides extremely detailed information about the excitation process, and highlights some important characteristics seen in excited populations that would otherwise be misleading or completely overlooked if one were to use more traditional diagnostic techniques. This dissertation discusses both the theoretical and experimental results applied to three-level coherently excited target populations of Rb-87.

Préparation et manipulation d'un nuage d'atomes froids de rubidium pour le stockage de l'information quantique / Preparation and manipulation of a cold atomic ensemble of rubidium for quantum information storage

Issautier, Amandine 28 November 2014 (has links)
Coherent, efficient and reversible storage of photonic states in atomic memories is thus necessary and represents a major challenge in quantum information science. Several storage medium, such as cold atomic or solid-state ensembles, are considered so as to satisfy at best the different benchmarks of a quantum memory. In this context, the work presented in this manuscript describes the experimental realization of a memory based on the DLCZ protocol in cold atomic ensemble of 87Rb. A double magneto-optical trap system allows cooling and confining this ensemble within a trap showing a lifetime of 15 s, and to manipulate it for quantum storage. This cloud shows a resonant optical thickness of about 5, and atoms are cooled down to 10 µK. The implementation of the DLCZ protocol in this atomic ensemble consists in creating coherent states of matter and then to read them, using Raman scattering events which come along with the generation of pairs of single photons correlated in momentum. First results show non-classical correlations, which exhibit a strong violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, with a read-out efficiency of about $4\%$ and a coherence time of the stored state on the order of 800 ns. This memory, used as a heralded single photon source, is part of a project in which an interface based on non-linear guided wave optics has been built and caracterized so as to convert the 795 nm single photons generated by the memory to the telecom wavelength of 1560 nm. Both elements, combined with a entangled photon source withi

Réalisation d'une source d'électrons par ionisation d'un jet d'atomes de césium refroidis par laser / Realization of an electron source by ionization of a laser-cooled cesium atomic beam

Khalili, Guyve 10 July 2015 (has links)
Electron and Ion beams are at the base of many instrumental techniques used to explore, to analyse and to modify materials from the micrometer to the manometer scale (Electronic Microscopy, Electron Spectrometry, Focused Ion beams techniques…). Spatial and Energetic resolutions of these techniques are strongly dependent on its source‘s properties and particularly their working temperature. In fact, for more than ten years, the potential of ionised cold atoms have been intensively studied. Our experiment at LAC, described in this thesis, uses a 2 dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT) to create a caesium atomic beam. The transverse temperature of the beam is around 100 µK. Despite this, the beam is still too divergent after exiting the cooling area. To guide the atomic beam up to the ionisation area, we have studied and implemented a particular method of dipolar guiding. The use of a unique laser properly set allowed us to push and guide altogether the atoms of the beam while limiting the heating effect. Thus, we have managed to compress the atomic beam’s size to 400 µm at 60 cm from the output of the MOT.Afterward, the atomic beam is ionised by the method of Rydberg (static) field ionisation. The atoms are firstly excited by laser on a Rydberg state (n~30) as a static homogeneous and uniform electric field is applied. The excited atoms of beam travel therefore to a high-gradient field area where they ionise around the same electric potential value, therefore reducing the ionisation area’s size and the initial potential energy spread of the electron beam. The ionisation probability of the atoms in the field depends greatly on the excited Rydberg state. The choice of an optimal Rydberg state , i.e. with the highest probability of ionisation, needs better knowledge of the ionisation of cesium Rydberg states. A two levels model us to describe the ionisation behaviour of some Ryberg. This simple models helps to understand what kind of states we want to excite in order to optimise the ionisation area‘s size. An experimental study of cesium Rydberg states is also presented.

Continuous Beam of Laser-Cooled Ytterbium Atoms for Precision Measurements

Rathod, Ketan D January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
What if an elementary particle such as an electron had an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM)? Existence of such an EDM would be an indication of time-reversal symmetry violation in the laws of Physics. The Standard model of Physics is considered incomplete, and theories that go beyond the standard model predict existence of such EDM’s within experimental reach. Experiments that search for their existence serve as a test bed for these theories. Use of laser-cooled Yb atoms launched in a fountain for EDM search has been proposed earlier. This thesis describes the main experimental work on generating a continuous cold beam of Yb atoms using laser cooling. Such cold beams are ideal for performing EDM experiments and have several advantages over the more common pulsed fountain. We demonstrate two ways to achieve this (i) extracting the beam from atoms trapped in 2- dimensions and (ii) deflecting the atomic beam using 1D-optical molasses. We find that the latter method gives a longitudinal temperature of 41 mK, which is a factor of 3 better than the former one. We also demonstrate the implementation of Ramsey’s separated oscillatory field technique in a thermal beam to measure the larmor precession frequency with high precision. This serves as a first step towards implementation with cold beam. Extending the work reported here, we suggest future experiment for measuring an EDM.

Ultracold Neutral Plasma Evolution in an External Magnetic Field

Pak, Chanhyun 26 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
We study the expansion velocity and ion temperature evolution of ultracold neutral plasmas (UNPs) of calcium atoms under the influence of a uniform magnetic field that ranges up to 200 G. In the experiments, we use a magneto-optical trap (MOT) to capture the neutral atoms and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to take images of the plasma. We vary the magnetic field strengths and the initial electron temperatures and observe the plasma evolution in time. We compare the ion temperature evolution to the theory introduced in the paper by Pohl et. al. [Phys. Rev. A 70, 033416 (2004)]. The evolution of the gradient of expansion velocity suggests the presence of ion acoustic waves (IAWs). We speculate that our measurements showing that the ion temperature remains relatively high throughout the evolution is a biproduct of the IAW.

Simultaneous slowing of two alkali through laser and frequency enhancing and new ways of trapping in magneto-optical traps

We demonstrate, for the first time, a laser cooling of a double atomic beam. This two-species beam was laser cooled by Zeeman technique with Li = -850 MHz and Na = +150 MHz detunings from the corresponding 2S1/2 F = 2 2P3/2 F = 3 atomic transitions. In a second experiment, we show a new two-color vapor-cell magneto-optical trap. By surrounding type-I Na trap with a non-overlaping type-II trap we achieve a ~10-fold improvement in the number of cooled atoms. This is achieved when the capture laser is detuned 12 MHz to the red of the 32S1/2 F = 2 32P3/2 F = 2 transition. In a third experiment, we observe the first alkaline magneto-optical trap operating on 2S1/2 2P1/2 transition (D1 line). For the choosen sodium atoms, we have four different traps within D1 line, with 105 to 107 cooled atoms. For two of them, one has to revert the usual sign of circular polarizations of the cooling lasers, due to negative Zeeman shift of the lower hyperfine levels

Holographic imaging of cold atoms

Turner, Lincoln David Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents a new optical imaging technique which measures the structure of objects without the use of lenses. Termed diffraction-contrast imaging (DCI), the method retrieves the object structure from a Fresnel diffraction pattern of the object, using a deconvolution algorithm. DCI is particularly adept at imaging highly transparent objects and this is demonstrated by retrieving the structure of an almost transparent cloud of laser-cooled atoms. Applied to transparent Bose-Einstein condensates, DCI should allow the non-destructive imaging of the condensate while requiring only the minimum possible apparatus of a light source and a detector. Modèles cinétiques, de Kuramoto à Vlasov : bifurcations et analyse expérimentale d'un piège magnéto-optique / Kinetic models, from Kuramoto to Vlasov : bifurcations and experimental analysis of a magneto-optical trap

Métivier, David 22 September 2017 (has links)
Long-range interacting systems are known to display particular statistical and dynamical properties. To describe their dynamical evolution, we can use kinetic equations describing their density in the phase space. This PhD thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first part concerns our collaboration with an experimental team on a Magneto-Optical Trap. The physics of this widely-used device, operating with a large number of atoms, is supposed to display effective Coulomb interactions coming from photon rescattering. We have proposed experimental tests to highlight the analog of a Debye length, and its influence on the system response. The experimental realizations do not allow yet a definitive conclusion. In the second part, we analyzed the Vlasov and Kuramoto kinetic models. To study their infinite dimensional dynamics, we looked at bifurcations around unstable steady states. The goal was to obtain reduced equations describing the dynamical evolution. We performed unstable manifold expansions on five different kinetic systems. These reductions are in general not exact and plagued by singularities, yet they predict correctly the nature and scaling of the bifurcation, which we tested numerically. We conjectured an exact dimensional reduction (obtained using the Triple Zero normal form) around the inhomogeneous states of the Vlasov equation. These results are expected to be very generic and could be relevant in an astrophysical context. Other results apply to synchronization phenomena through the Kuramoto model for oscillators with inertia and/or delayed interactions.
