RECENT EXPOSURE TO CENTERFOLD IMAGES, SEXUAL EXPLICITNESS, PAST EXPOSURE TO OBJECTIFYING MEDIA, AND THE ACTIVATION OF THE CENTERFOLD SYNDROMEWright, Paul January 2011 (has links)
The chief goal of the present study was to test whether exposing young adult males to female centerfold images causes them to believe more strongly in a set of beliefs clinical psychologist Gary Brooks terms "the centerfold syndrome." In addition to testing the straightforward effect of exposure to centerfold images on males' centerfold syndrome beliefs, the present study explored the moderating potential of three variables: sexual explicitness of the centerfold images, males' past exposure to objectifying media, and recency of exposure to the centerfold images.Participants were randomly assigned to either a control condition that did not feature centerfold stimuli, a "nonexplicit" condition that featured female centerfolds who did not expose their nipples or genitalia, or an "explicit" condition that featured female centerfolds exposing either their nipples, genitalia, or both. Past exposure to objectifying media was assessed by asking participants how frequently they viewed pornography in the prior year. Items indexing the five centerfold syndrome beliefs - voyeurism, sexual reductionism, masculinity validation, trophyism, nonrelational sex - were administered immediately after exposure and approximately 48 hours after exposure.Exposure to centerfold images had an immediate strengthening effect on the sexual reductionism and nonrelational sex beliefs of males who view objectifying media about once a month or less and this effect persisted approximately 48 hours after exposure. Likewise, exposure to centerfold images had an immediate strengthening effect on the masculinity validation beliefs of males who view objectifying media about once a month or less, and this effect persisted at a marginally significant level approximately 48 hours after exposure. No difference were found between males exposed to nonexplicit vs. explicit images.These findings are consistent with a growing body of literature indicating that mainstream media sex can affect the sexuality of young people. Furthermore, the findings of the present study affirm the suspicions of some that objectifying depictions of females affect the sexual beliefs of some males in ways that are likely unrelated to sexual aggression but are still antisocial.

The analysis is partly based on a semiotic analysis of the representation of masculinity and male sexuality from an episode of the chosen television series Queer as folk, and partly based on a thematic analysis of focus group discussions with young men with different sexualities.</p><p>Material/Method: This study is based on focus group interviews and a semiotic and thematic analysis. The focus groups consisted of three men in three different groups and were chosen on the criteria of gender and sexuality. All groups were presented with an episode of the television series Queer as folk to see how they perceived masculinity and male sexuality. Their discussions were analyzed with a thematic analysis and the television series Queer as folk with a semiotic analysis.</p><p>Main results: The three analyzed characters in Queer as folk showed different representations of masculinity and male sexuality. ¡§Don't Call Me Boy¡¨:Black Nationalism, Black Male Sexuality, and Black Masculinity in James Baldwin's Another CountryHsu, Shih-chan 23 January 2007 (has links)
This thesis aims to read James Baldwin¡¦s Another Country to examine why and how he uses this novel to interrogate black nationalist discourses that inform the sexist and heterosexist biases in mid-century America. I would argue that Baldwin, in writing this novel, adopts an ambivalent narrative strategy both to ostensibly compromise on the heterosexual matrix politically and culturally scripted by black activists, and to critique the black hyperbolic masculinism endorsed and performed by them as itself a tragic consequence of white racism. Whereas black nationalists carry the Black Macho agenda into practice to redeem their manliness, Baldwin suspects that the heterosexist imperative of black machismo may end up infringing the rights of gender and sexual minorities. I thus argue, in Chapter One, that Baldwin writes Another Country to negotiate an oblique response to the conundrum he feels as both an artist and a black leader. To explain how his conundrum takes shape, I attempt in Chapter Two to lay bare the hegemonic masculinist ideologies embedded in anti-racist discourses. Drawing on this historical and theoretical investigation as my interpretive scaffold, I would in the following three chapters elaborate on how the novelist exemplifies his narrative technique via his male figures in Another Country. In doing so, Baldwin can, I would propose, assert that racial justice and sexual freedom must concur to effectuate blacks¡¦ autonomy. As such, I conclude my thesis by suggesting that Baldwin never intends ¡§another country¡¨ to be an idyllic landscape wherein Eric ostensibly plays out as a ¡§sexual savior¡¨ and betters other characters¡¦ self-recognition. Another Country instead illustrates a contested site where discourses on black nationalism, black male sexuality, and black masculinity come into a productive dialogism. Another Country, that is, can be best interpreted as Baldwin¡¦s investigation into the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality in the sixties, and his consistent reformulation of individual identity as fluid, labile, and multiple.

Com base nas contribuições do referencial psicanalítico, mais especificamente, das teorizações de Bleichmar acerca da constituição do psiquismo e da constituição sexual masculina, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa de delineamento qualitativo-exploratório. Dois estudos de casos de pacientes com disfunção erétil foram realizados, a partir dos relatos das sessões de psicoterapia. Os dados foram analisados por meio do Estudo de Caso em Psicanálise, identificando-se aspectos significativos da constelação familiar. Estes aspectos permitiram apontar a importância dos efeitos do processo de constituição do aparelho psíquico e constituição sexual masculina sobre as manifestações da sexualidade genital (adulta), bem como demonstrar a importância da escuta para reorganizar além da vida sexual, a potência diante da vida. / This Master's thesis in clinical psychology focused on the case study of patients who showed sexual impotence. Based on the contributions of psychoanalysis, more specifically, the theories of Bleichmar about the constitution of the psyche and of male sex, a study of exploratory qualitative research was designed. We investigated two case studies of patients with erectile dysfunction based on the reports of sessions of psychotherapy. Data were analyzed using the Case Study in Psychoanalysis. We identified significant aspects of family constellation that led to the conclusion about the importance of the effects of the constitution of the psychic apparatus and male sexual constitution on the manifestations of genital sexuality (adult). And also demonstrated the importance of listening to rearrange, beyond the sex life, the power to life.

This study is concerned with men's sexual fantasies content that appears either within partner's sexual lovemaking or during masturbation. Except fantasy description and classifying it also pays attention to the associations with sexual satisfaction. The study results have proved that they appear much more and in higher variety with masturbation. One of the most popular fantasies is lovemaking with the own partner. Most men state one deviant fantasy at least, homosexual fantasy is an ordinary phenomenon even with heterosexual men. From the point of sexual satisfaction some differences have been approved in the fantasy content in contrast with unsatisfied individuals. Sharing mutual fantasy with the own partner has been approved to be very important.

There is indeed nothing more subjective than sexual satisfaction, despite the easy access to pornographic material that tends to introduce some elements of comparison in the mind of each man, however unrealistic. There are many tools to measure sexual satisfaction. However, it has been demonstrated that assessing sexual satisfaction with a single question is nearly as reliable as using more detailed questionnaires. Ce mémoire fait appel aux notions de stéréotype (tel que théorisé par Ruth Amossy, Jean- Louis Dufays et Mireille Rosello) et d’auto-exotisme (défini par Nathalie Schon) afin d’étudier les représentations de la sexualité de l’homme noir dans Alléluia pour une femme-jardin de René Depestre et La chair du maître de Dany Laferrière. Le stéréotype et l’exotisme, tous deux tributaires d’une vision de l’autre généralisante, superficielle et éphémère, nous intéressent dans la mesure où ils sont employés de façon auto-référentielle par ces auteurs d’origine haïtienne, qui mettent en scène des protagonistes noirs correspondant souvent au stéréotype du Noir hyper-sexuel, qui est pourtant issu de fantasmagories coloniales avilissantes.
Dans le cadre de cette recherche, nous analysons les différentes postures de la sexualité masculine dans les œuvres susmentionnées afin d’y révéler un emploi varié des stéréotypes, tantôt reconduits, tantôt déplacés, voire rendus désuets ou incertains, grâce à diverses stratégies textuelles comme l’humour, l’ironie, l’exagération ou l’omission. Ce faisant, nous remarquons que l’usage complexe des stéréotypes, chez Depestre et Laferrière, quoi qu’il fasse appel aux mêmes tropes, dénote différents moyens de négocier avec sa propre « étrangeté ». / This thesis uses the concepts of stereotype (as theorized by Ruth Amossy, Jean-Louis Dufay and Mireille Rosello) and self-exoticism (defined by Nathalie Schon) to study the representations of the sexuality of the black man in Alléluia pour une femme-jardin from author René Depestre and La chair du maître from Dany Laferrière. Stereotype and exoticism are both dependent on a vision of the other that is generalizing, superficial and ephemeral. Here, they are used in a self-referential way by the authors of Haitian origin, which depict black protagonists often corresponding to the stereotype of black hyper-sexual male, which is derived from yet demeaning colonial fantasies.
In this research, we analyze the different postures of male sexuality in the work of Depestre and Laferrière in order to reveal a varied use of stereotypes, sometimes renewed, sometimes displaced or rendered obsolete or uncertain, with various textual strategies such as humor, irony, exaggeration or omission.
