Enterprise Risk Management : insights on emerging risks from the German banking sector

Nöth-Zahn, Stephanie January 2017 (has links)
IT innovations have reshaped banking and will continue to do so. They are a manifestation of indispensable progress, yet risks emerge from IT innovations. Historic data and accounts of emerging risk experiences are rather scarce. Hence, they present a special challenge to risk management as they are hard to identify. Moreover, traditional risk management practices, relying on historic data, may not be fully adequate. What solutions can be offered by risk management to manage these risks? When is an uncertainty understood as an emerging risk? Who needs to be involved in the risk management process? The research asks the seemingly obvious question, yet this important topic has been regularly neglected in academics as well as in practice. Both literature and theoretical basis have only recently developed so as of yet there is little availability of varying viewpoints and reliable theories. 70% of the banks interviewed do notactively consider emerging risks in their risk management process. The banks take a reluctant position in general, waiting to see how things develop. Only three banks have a proactive approach and manage emerging risks from IT innovation in using an enterprise-wide approach such as Enterprise Risk Management (ERM).Therefore, this work develops a conceptual framework which aims to fill the research gap between ERM as an approach to holistic portfolio risk management and the lack of academic and practical work on emerging risks. The conceptual framework explores how banks can apply ERM to manage emerging risks in the future. Researching this topical phenomenon, extending today's common application and understanding of emerging risks and ERM in practice and academia is one of the most challenging tasks confronting future risk management (Bromiley et al., 2015).To the author's knowledge, this project is one of the first to take this challenge.

Dispositivo curricular de controle: gerenciamento do Risco e governamento da surdez no cenário educacional / Curricular device of control: management of risk and govern of the deafness in the educational scene

Morgenstern, Juliane Marschall 28 August 2009 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The following dissertation, ¨Curricular device of control: Management of the risk and govern of the deafness in the educational scene¨ connects to the curriculum development in approach to a post structural access. On the rummage of this work, for such constructions the checkpoint was the referring possibilities the capture and invention of the deafness in the curricular scope, taken mainly from the studies of Michel Foucault. For such constructions the National Curricular Parameters were selected: curricular adaptations, that when compose a discursive conjuncture next to other documents, has made possible the governance of the deafness in the educational contemporary area. Amongst the conceptual tools that had tacked this dissertation, I detach the governance and the bio-politics, which had hallowed to the description and analysis of the resume as a device that has operated in the management and regulation of the deaf group, produced as a group of risk. In this way it is possible to verify the placed normalization processes in functioning for the gear of the inclusion, where the deafness is translated by the bias of the cultural plurality. Argument that stops taking care of the neoliberal government principles, strategies of malleability in the direction are delineated to keep the curricular functionality and to make possible the regulation in the control society. In this manner, how much bigger the capacity of the resume in make itself flexible, greater the capacity to be large in scope of its governance. Being thus, the resume in such a way answers to the liquefaction and transitoriness of the world after-modern, it produces how much it. In view of strategical the inclusive movement as imperative in the current context, the delineation of the deafness in the register of the diversity can be glimpsed as category submit of normalization. Thus, one invests on the deaf citizen-pupils biopoliticos mechanisms of regulation that place in practical prophylactic and preventive measures for containment of possible risks represented for the exclusion, discrimination, intolerance, amongst other situations. Finally, without intending to solve any tenseness of the education or the resume, I bring glances that lead to think about possibilities o escape in the regulation meshes, pointing with respect to the communion of diad to be able/freedom.

Fabio Claro Coimbra 22 December 2006 (has links)
The resolution 3380 of the Brazilian Central Bank, as of June 29th 2006, determines that, until the end of 2007, all authorized institutions must implement an operational risk management structure, representing another step in the brazilian compliance process to the New Basel Capital Accord. The objectives of this work are to study the structuring process of an operational risk management unit and to identify theoretical references to support this structuring process in banks. In order to achieve the considered objectives, a case study was conducted on a bank chosen in function to its relevance in the national scene. The results of the research suggest that the theoretical references on organizational structures can be very useful in structuring operational risk management units in banks, due to the fact that theoretical background on operational risk management units are still incipient.

Innovative Delivery of Water Infrastructure Projects

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Water utilities across the United States are facing numerous challenges, such as limited funding and increasing project complexity, in constructing and upgrading their aging infrastructure. One innovative method to overcome these challenges is through the use of alternative project delivery methods (APDM), such as construction management at-risk (CMAR) and design-build (DB). Previous research has shown that APDM have the potential to deliver higher performing water infrastructure projects when compared to the traditional design-bid-build (DBB) method. However, there is a need to further examine APDM practices and develop tools that may support utilities in the delivery of their APDM water infrastructure projects. This study fills the knowledge gap by conducting several studies that may support public and private utilities in improving the delivery of their APDM water infrastructure projects. First, APDM implementation practices for water infrastructure projects are identified by assessing the state of practice, particularly during project procurement and execution. Second, DB project administration best practices are determined to support utilities seeking to add DB to their organization’s project delivery toolbox. Third, a pioneering web-based project delivery method decision-support tool was developed to aid utilities in selecting the appropriate delivery method for their water project. Finally, project-specific factors and attributes that impact project delivery performance are investigated through exploratory modeling and analysis. The study collected data on 75 completed treatment plant projects, conducted interviews with ten utilities that successfully deliver their water projects using DB, and worked closely with several industry experts through industry workshops and panels. Key findings related to water infrastructure project delivery revealed in this study included: (1) guaranteed maximum price (GMP) is the preferred compensation type for APDM projects; (2) utilities statistically having the lowest comfort level with delivering CMAR projects; (3) qualifications-based procurement is an effective DB project delivery practice; (4) the identification of 13 key project delivery method selection factors; and (5) the three highest predictors that impact unit cost performance are project complexity, project team chemistry and communication, and project size. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2020

Market Risk: Exponential Weightinh in the Value-at-Risk Calculation

Broll, Udo, Förster, Andreas, Siebe, Wilfried 03 September 2020 (has links)
When measuring market risk, credit institutions and Alternative Investment Fund Managers may deviate from equally weighting historical data in their Value-at-Risk calculation and instead use an exponential time series weighting. The use of expo-nential weighting in the Value-at-Risk calculation is very popular because it takes into account changes in market volatility (immediately) and can therefore quickly adapt to VaR. In less volatile market phases, this leads to a reduction in VaR and thus to lower own funds requirements for credit institutions. However, in the ex-ponential weighting a high volatility in the past is quickly forgotten and the VaR can be underestimated when using exponential weighting and the VaR may be un-derestimated. To prevent this, credit institutions or Alternative Investment Fund Managers are not completely free to choose a weighting (decay) factor. This article describes the legal requirements and deals with the calculation of the permissible weighting factor. As an example we use the exchange rate between Euro and Polish zloty to estimate the Value-at-Risk. We show the calculation of the weighting factor with two different approaches. This article also discusses exceptions to the general legal requirements.
