An explication of the dual nature of narcissism in Patrick White's novel The solid mandala

The focus of this thesis has been to engage in a hermeneutic dialogue with Patrick White's novel The solid mandala, to provide an explication of the dual nature of narcissistic wounding. To this end a brief review of Patrick White's novels is given, which traces a thematic development of the hero's strivings to attain wholeness and merger with an idealized image. This struggle is understood to reflect man's strivings to return to a state of omnipotent fusion with the maternal image, be it God, nature, the idealized other, or the self. Literature which reflects the dual nature of narcissistic wounding is reviewed, and the concept of narcissism is traced from the historical roots of Freud, to current understandings of the function and experience of narcissism. Emphasis is given to understanding the experiential nature of narcissistic wounding. As such it is implied that narcissism is a normal developmental component which requires the facilitation of containment and reflection for its transformation into appropriate adult functioning. The importance of the maternal environment is discussed, together with the various theoretical conceptualizations of the consequences of failure of the environment. The hermeneutic dialogue with the novel's description of the experiences of the twins, Waldo and Arthur provides the basis for an amplification of the experience of narcissistic wounding. This amplification is used as clinical material from which a number of psychoanalytic formulations are drawn. These formulations are supported by a number of clinical examples from the researcher's own practice. There appears to be evidence for the value of focusing on the dual nature of the experience of narcissistic wounding. This focus reveals two aspects of experience, a damaged, positive, libidinal aspect and a defensive, pathological destructive aspect. Amplification of these two aspects of experience contribute to further the understanding of the conflictual experience of narcissistic wounding, and suggest the necessity for such an understanding for effective therapeutic intervention

Piercing to the Pith of the Body: The Evolution of Body Mandala and Tantric Corporeality in Tibet

Buddhist tantric practitioners embrace the liminal status of the human body to manifest divine identity. In piercing to the pith of human embodiment, the tantric practitioner reconfigures the shape and contours of his/her reality. This article investigates the evolution of one particular technique for piercing to the pith of the body on Tibetan soil, a ritual practice known as body mandala [lus dkyil Skt. deha-man. d. ala]. In particular, it uncovers a significant shift of emphasis in the application of the Guhyasamaja body mandala practice initiated by champions of the emerging Gandenpa [Dga' ldan pa] or Gelukpa [Dge lugs pa] tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) and Mkhas grub rje (1385-1438). This article reveals some of the radical implications of ritual exegesis, ranging from the socioreligious aspects of securing prestige for a tradition to the ultimate soteriological goals of modifying the boundaries between life and death and ordinary and enlightened embodiment.

This study attempts to find out if a reading of Michael Romekys novel I, Vampire through the theories presented by psychoanalyst C. G. Jung adds anything to the understanding of the novels narrative. More precisely it attempts to read the novel as an individuation process, a Jungian concept in which an individuals damaged psyche heals itself, of the novels protagonist. This reading is based upon the assumption that the protagonist, David, suffers a trauma when he divorces his wife Clarice. This trauma, and divorce, is read as a split between David ego and his anima, his female aspect. When he is on the brink of suicide, Tatiana shows up, turn him in to a vampire and give his life new meaning. Tatiana is read as his anima, the part of himself that i distanced himself from during the divorce, and he now needs to assimilate with again. This assimilationwhat Jung names the conuncitio, is the goal of the individuation process. In order to success with this individuation process David has to meet and overcome the dark and damaged parts of himself; his shadow aspects to use the Jungian language. These are represented by the evil vampires Jack the Ripper and von Baden. It is only after meeting, and defeating this shadow aspects, and after a rigorous mental training, in order to strengthen his mental abilities, that David can unite with his anima, Tatiana, in the alchemical wedding. The Jungian goal of the individuation process. I find in this study that to read this novel through a Jungian screen show aspects otherwise hidden. The narrative structure, and the symbols in the novel, have a distinct Jungian flavour which give the novel a meaning perhaps not seen on the surface.

The thesis paper Design takes place in our lives, naturally and sometimes invisibly, but how can we become alert to its impact on us? How can we as designers elaborate on our role in creating tools for people’s lives? A handmade metal wire toy I found in my parents’ house made me discover the world of mandalas; a Buddhistic symbol and a tool for spiritual enlightenment. Mandalas speak of the relation between us and the world and balance between body and mind. In my Master’s project, the act of playing is explored as a tool for altering perspectives on our physical environment. Inspired by the mandala, an alternative approach to functional form is visualized, connecting our bodies and minds in closer relation to a playful and imaginative state of being. By investigating our physical environment and encouraging interaction, new mantras for our everyday lives may be created. The design process Using the metal wire mandala as my starting point, I have explored spatial forms with possibilities in transformation. Different combinations of the same parts; half circles of bent metal wire which connected can move and therefore change the other shape of the construction, creates different kinds of space with more or less clear practical application. The ambition of this project has been to investigate the metal construction as foundation and frame for textile in and as architecture; building a whole space, as visual room dividers indoor or outdoor and as sun screen. The design is based on transformation and reuse of the same parts to build new forms. The textiles have been designed and produced with the metal construction as frame. The textiles are knitted with nylon thread, hand dyed and mounted onto the construction. The technique of partial knitting makes it possible to create the round shapes with an even elasticity in all directions, and an open centre for the next piece overlapping. When knitting, no waste material I generated since nothing is cut away after production. Using punch cards, patterns and structure is added to the surface. The need to create smaller spaces within a larger space is present in many places; indoors as well as out doors. The public environment in which we live, controls and shapes our lives. By creating more intimate sites, with the possibility for visual and mental rest, we can come closer one another and hold other types of conversations. This will create new patterns of behaviour; new mantras for everyday life. During the Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2013, I displayed one of the possible forms in full scale with textiles, along side a smaller size model of the same shape and one other possible shape with closer resemblance to the original wire toy. On site in the exhibition, visitors could meet and try the space in a real setting. / Thesis uppsats Formgivning sker i våra liv, naturligt och ibland osynligt, men hur kan vi bli uppmärksamma på dess inverkan på oss? Hur kan vi som formgivare utveckla vår roll i att skapa redskap för människors liv? En handgjord leksak av metalltråd som jag hittade i mitt föräldrahem fick mig att upptäcka mandalans värld – en buddistisk symbol och ett redskap för andlig upplysning. Mandalan vittnar om förhållandet mellan oss och världen och jämvikt mellan kropp och själ. I mitt masterarbete utforskas lekaktivitet som ett redskap för att ändra perspektiv på vår fysiska omgivning. Med inspiration från mandalan åskådliggörs en alternativ infallsvinkel på funktionell form som förenar våra kroppar och sinnen mer intimt med en lekfull och fantasifull tillvaro. Genom att undersöka vår fysiska omgivning och uppmuntra samspel kan vi skapa nya mantra för vardagen. Designprocessen Med leksaken av metalltråd som utgångspunkt, har jag utforskat rumsliga former med möjlighet till transformation. Olika kompositioner av samma byggstenar; halvcirklar av böjd metalltråd vilka sammanlänkade kan röra sig mot varandra och på så vis förändra den yttre formen, skapar olika typer av rumsligheter med mer eller mindre definierad praktisk användning. Projektets ambition har varit att utforska metallkonstruktionens möjligheter som stomme för textil i och som arkitektur; som skapande av hela rum, som visuella rumsavdelare inomhus eller utomhus samt som solskydd. Designen bygger på förvandling och återanvändning, där samma delar kan användas till att sätta samman nya former. De textila materialen har arbetats fram med metallkonstruktionen som utgångspunkt och ram. Textilierna är stickade i nylon, färgade och monterade i konstruktionen. Tekniken att delsticka på stickmaskin möjliggör att de runda formerna med jämn elasticitet åt alla håll, och ett hål lämnas i centrum för nästa överlappande del i den monterade konstruktionen. I stickningen skapas heller inget spillmaterial eftersom ingenting klipps bort efter tillverkningen. Med hjälp av hålkort integreras mönstringar och strukturer. Behovet av att skapa mindre rum i större rum finns många platser; inomhus såväl som utomhus. De offentliga platser vi rör oss på styr vårt beteende och formar våra liv. Med intimare mötesplatser och möjlighet till visuell och mental vila kan vi komma närmare varandra och föra andra typer av samtal vilket kan skapa nya mönster av beteende; nya mantran. Under Konstfacks vårutställning 2013, visades en av de möjliga formerna i fullskala med textilier, samt en mindre modell av denna samt en annan form med tydlig anknytning till mandala-leksakens ursprungliga form. På plats i utställningen kunde besökare pröva rummet i ett verkligt sammanhang.

The assertion was that using a multimodal (verbal-visual) transmediated interpretation of the key elements (theme, setting, characterisation)of a short story might afford ESL learners a "deeper reading" (inferential comprehension and appreciation) of a literary text, and that the learners could also be supported to grow in their interpretation and appreciation of English literature. The research findings of the literary analysis project revealed that ESL learners with a "satisfactory" English proficiency can be supported by using transmediation to engage them in rich interpretations of literary genres to realise their interpretations linguistically in written academic eesays. / English Studies / M. Este trabalho apresenta uma análise intertextual do romance The Solid Mandala, do escritor australiano, ganhador do prêmio Nobel, Patrick White, publicado em 1966, como parte de um esforço para estimular estudos sobre sua obra no Brasil e para investigar por que sua fortuna crítica tem passado por uma fase negativa recentemente. Primeiro, mostramos brevemente sua biografia e as condições relacionadas à produção e publicação de The Solid Mandala. Em seguida, apresentamos o contexto histórico do romance. As relações de conflito e complementação envolvendo os irmãos gêmeos Waldo e Arthur Brown na narrativa são analisadas, com destaque para a relação deles com a literatura (um tema importante no romance), retratando o papel das personagens como leitores e escritores na história, apreendendo, assim, seus sentimentos, suas visões de mundo e filosofia de vida (Waldo aspira à uma carreira de escritor e Arthur de fato compõe um poema). Os estudos de Gérard Genette sobre Narratologia são utilizados para embasar a análise, particularmente na relação intertextual entre The Solid Mandala e The Brothers Karamazov, do escritor F. First, we briefly present his biography and the conditions surrounding the writing and publication of The Solid Mandala. Later on, we present the historical context of the novel. The relations of conflict and complementation involving the twin brothers Waldo and Arthur Brown in the narrative are analysed, but we focus on their relation to literature (which is an important theme in the novel), depicting their roles as readers and writers in the story, thus, apprehending their feelings towards each other, worldviews and outlook on life (Waldo aspires to become a great writer, and Arthur actually produces a poem). Gérard Genette’s studies on Narratology are used to support our analysis, particularly in the intertextual relation between The Solid Mandala and F. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, which is the title that calls Arthur’s attention. In his pursue to find the whole of his life, Arthur incorporates various elements (centred at just one point, his mandalas) and is able to create his own philosophy.
