REAL TIME CONTROL OF MANUFACTURING UTILIZING A MANUFACTURING EXECUTION SYSTEM (MES)

Jeremy Sickmiller (8740677) 22 April 2020 (has links)
Manufacturing facilities need control for sustainability and longevity. If no control is provided for the manufacturing facility, then chaos can be unleashed causing much alarm. Therefore, it is essential to understand how control can be utilized to support the manufacturing facility and the corresponding manufacturing processes. This thesis will walk through a tool to help provide control and that tool is a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). Thisthesis will start with research to defineMESand its implications, then will work into the development of MES from the ground up. The design process willbe systematic and utilize the Collective System Design (CSD) approach with the aiding tool of the axiomatic decomposition map. Then examples will be given for the implementation and execution of the decomposition map as it relates to inventory and traceability. Finalwork will show the 7 FRs ofmanufacturing and how they are applicable to MES with given examples. Throughout the entire design and implementation, the initial hypothesis will be evaluated to determine if MES can provide the control requiredfor a robust manufacturing facility.

Financial and Operational outcomes of a No-Code Manufacturing Execution System (MES)

Malmström, Linus, Lind, Sara January 2023 (has links)
Purpose: This study aims to identify the operational and financial outcomes of companies implementing the no-code manufacturing execution system (MES). Methods: This study has been conducted using inductive reasoning to develop new theories in this unexplored subject. The thesis has conducted a multiple case study to collect qualitative, empirical data. Qualitative data has been collected through conducting three interviews from two separate companies. The Research Background and Findings section was then cross analyzed to find commonalities to form conclusions.  Conclusion: Implementing a no-code MES offers operational and financial benefits for manufacturing companies. It improves productivity, reduces lead times, increases flexibility, and enhances quality efforts. Cost savings are achieved through paper reduction and lower implementation costs compared to traditional MES solutions, which do not have no-code features. Overall, a no-code MES delivers advantageous outcomes efficiently and eliminates the need for significant capital investments and technical skills. Theoretical Contribution: This thesis contributes to the field of science by unifying Manufacturing Execution System (MES) with the existent subject of low-code/no-code. This study creates a deeper knowledge by merging science with empirics.  Practical Contribution: The thesis contributes to practitioners in the manufacturing industry by indicating the relevance and importance of the beneficial operational and financial outcomes of adopting a no-code MES. Firstly, there are strong indications that a no-code MES could be a possible solution for companies that could be impacted by the labor shortage in software developer jobs. Secondly, as the no-code MES mitigates the barriers with traditional MES solutions, having the MES built on no-code makes the solution more cost-effective and easy-to-maintain. Limitations & Future Research: This study is limited to two case companies and three interviews. The study’s findings are limited by the short duration of a no-code MES implementation in the case companies, preventing a full investigation of financial outcomes. Further research is necessary to fully examine the financial outcomes of implementing a no-code MES.

Alignement sémantique entre référentiels d’entreprise : Application aux systèmes d’exécution de la fabrication (MES) / Semantic alignment between Enterprise Repositories : Application to manufacturing execution systems (MES)

Sakka, Omar 21 March 2012 (has links)
Interoperability between enterprise applications is a multifaceted problem. In response, we have investigated the semantic alignment of business process and object knowledge supported by enterprise applications. This knowledge is heterogeneous across business and is implemented in different ways, generating semantic conflicts due to different interpretations of the actors. We study the identification of correspondences and/or conflicts between semantic knowledge, especially in the field of Manufacturing Execution System (MES). We propose an approach to formalize knowledge as a standardized repository ISO 62264 compliant: the "MES repository", and an approach to enhance the MES repository by successive alignments with other standards and/or repositories. Thus, we formally define a meta-model that describes the semantic relationships between elements of the aligned repositories, and semantic control rules to keep MES repository consistency and its ISO compliance. Finally, we present an approach to align customer needs with the MES repository, in order to assist the implementation of enterprise applications. This PhD thesis was conducted as part of a research and development project supported by the economic Cluster Edit (Rhône-Alpes, France), and its results have been used in the new proposal “on demand MES”.

Information systems have been progressively introduced in manufacturing environments. This is due to the need to capture data, optimize processes and generate information efficiently, including real-time production operations, to facilitate decision-making by managers and analysts. The Manufacturing Execution System (MES), called the Manufacturing Control System, can help companies capture data and generate information, identify and improve their results. However, simple access to an information system does not assure advantage. Therefore, to achieve consistent results, downstream and upstream alignment between strategies and tactics is required for production practices with the information systems available on the factory floor. In this sense, this research sought to answer the research problem how to determine the focus of the features that make up the core functions of a MES for the satisfaction of the strategic objectives of the manufacture; being the MES represented by the core functions and its features and manufacturing strategy represented by the competitive capabilities. The overall objective was to elaborate a model that can distribute importance between the features that make up the core functions of a MES for industrial applications. The research method used was qualitativequantitative modeling and the techniques of data collection were interviews, application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Likert scale, and focus group. The developed model allows identifying a vector of importance between features and a quadrant between application and improvement of these vectors. Thereby, it allows companies that have or are look up to deploy MES systems and MES system applicators to identify which elements of manufacturing measurement and control most represent the strategic objectives of manufacturing; besides contributing to the advancement in research on MES and manufacturing strategy. This model was applied in two companies that date the use of the MES of eleven and eight years, with diferente product and processes. The results obtained were considered consistent and representative to the reality of the companies.

Duarte, Ageu Morais 20 November 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:05:44Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 3127.pdf: 25890453 bytes, checksum: d4cbd429325861ff182934e97ff94c28 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-20 / Manufacturing systems with shared resources have been designed to meet the market needs, which require high quality products, low cost and the guarantee of the conditions agreed with the customer. The production scheduling in a manufacturing system is a complex task due to its combinatorial nature. Several studies show the use of search methods, such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Tabu Search (TS), applied to the refinement of the production scheduling problem. The GAs present as disadvantages, the premature convergence, the lack of search intensification mechanisms in promising regions and also the lack of mechanisms which maintain the diversification of the population. In order to make GAs more effective in their search, by avoiding the premature convergence and ensuring the population diversity, some mechanisms are added to them so as to adjust their parameters during the search process, the so called Adaptative Genetic Algorithms (AGAs). However, these mechanisms do not guarantee the search intensification in the promising regions found. On the other hand, the TS presents mechanisms of search intensification and diversification, although its computational time depends on how optimal its initial solution is (solution by which the search process starts). In order to overcome the limitations of the traditional search methods, the Hybrid Algorithms (HAs) have been developed. They consist of the association of one method with another so that one helps the other in its deficiencies . This dissertation proposes the development of a Genetic-Tabu Algorithm (GTA) applied to the problem of the production reactive scheduling in a manufacturing system with shared resources, in order to ensure good compromise between makespan values and feedback time. The TS will be a functionality added to the AG and to the AGA, in other words, it will be a procedure to refine the individual(s) of the initial position and also to refine the individual obtained by the search methods. Tests have been conducted to determine which selection method (roulette or tournament) is more adequate for the definition of the neighborhood structure and also for the definition of the time to apply the mutation operator. Besides, other tests have been conducted by using different ways to calculate the makespan; one of them proposed in this dissertation and the others by Deriz (2007) and by Sanches (2008).

No. of bitstreams: 1 3829.pdf: 4230286 bytes, checksum: 57d5e0c531823572429b3f117b7809fb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-06-21 / A necessary condition for the economic efficiency of modern plants is the ability to adjust - as quickly and effectively as possible - the performance of manufacturing process for demand request decisions. In this sense, the research emphasized the importance of understanding the best practices in Information Technology (IT) and the trade scenario of solutions using shopfloor real data in virtual environments for simulation and many achieved benefits. The highlights of this research focused on exploring the collaboration (practice of skills for the achievement of mutually beneficial results) between the MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and the digital manufacturing systems (also called virtual manufacturing systems) of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management), in a scenario where the manufacturing processes require high flexibility, reliability and lower delivery times, extensive combination of variants and lower life-cycle of products. The research - in an exploratory and descriptive way, which identified the available knowledge on the subject more sharply between the years 2006 and 2010 - was grounded in the practices of world-renowned companies and institutions and considered opinions and evaluations of renowned researchers and professionals with expertise in initiatives to support the use of MES solutions data in systems of digital manufacturing of PLM to manufacturing processes planning. As a result of the studied scenarios and covered concepts, the research has consolidated a "diagram of information collaboration", with the aim of providing better decision choices within the framework of shop-floor project, processes planning and production management. The research also concluded that the MES systems may have their value extended if integrated within the characteristics of functionalities of the PLM concept. It also brought some recommendations and limitations on the portability of information, commented on the learned lessons and suggestions for future tasks that include the BPM (Business Process Management).

However, there is a lack of standardization to interface MES (Manufacturing Execution System), SCADA (Supervisory Control System and Data Acquisition) and coordination control. This paper investigates the use of languages and automata theory to integrate and implement MES and SCADA with controllers for data acquisition and intervention in the manufacturing plant. This approach aims to achieve consistency between levels as well as the systematic development of interfaces between MES, SCADA and control coordination. Thus, the objective is to reduce the effort for creating and maintaining these systems. Furthermore, it was implemented a tool for modeling and synthesis of the proposed method. For the experiments, it was developed a graphical environment for simulation of manufacturing. The validation was performed by through two experiments in which were modeled and synthesized controller, SCADA and MES according to the proposed method.

Development and Evaluation of a Machine Vision System for Digital Thread Data Traceability in a Manufacturing Assembly Environment

Alexander W Meredith (15305698) 29 April 2023 (has links)
<p>A thesis study investigating the development and evaluation of a computer vision (CV) system for a manufacturing assembly task is reported. The CV inference results are compared to a Manufacturing Process Plan and an automation method completes a buyoff in the software, Solumina. Research questions were created and three hypotheses were tested. A literature review was conducted recognizing little consensus of Industry 4.0 technology adoption in manufacturing industries. Furthermore, the literature review uncovered the need for additional research within the topic of CV. Specifically, literature points towards more research regarding the cognitive capabilities of CV in manufacturing. A CV system was developed and evaluated to test for 90% or greater confidence in part detection. A CV dataset was developed and the system was trained and validated with it. Dataset contextualization was leveraged and evaluated, as per literature. A CV system was trained from custom datasets, containing six classes of part. The pre-contextualization dataset and post-contextualization dataset was compared by a Two-Sample T-Test and statistical significance was noted for three classes. A python script was developed to compare as-assembled locations with as-defined positions of components, per the Manufacturing Process Plan. A comparison of yields test for CV-based True Positives (TPs) and human-based TPs was conducted with the system operating at a 2σ level. An automation method utilizing Microsoft Power Automate was developed to complete the cognitive functionality of the CV system testing, by completing a buyoff in the software, Solumina, if CV-based TPs were equal to or greater than human-based TPs.</p>
