homem, mulher e relacionamento conjugal.
This study investigates how gendering conceptions and practices affect couples conflicts and husband s physical, psychological or sexual violence against his partner.
Four couples, which have police report of physical aggression perpetrated by husbands against their wives and an history of this kind of violence, were individually interviewed, based on a two-section instrument: the first part collected participant s
socio-demographic data and, the second one, an interview script, aimed to investigate the participants conceptions about man, woman and couple relationship. Data were
analyzed by using software Alceste (Analyse Lexicale par Contexte d um Ensemble de Segments de Texte) and Content Analysis. Results demonstrated the agreement between
husbands and wives about two relevant points: a) traditional gender conceptions which guide domestic practices and the couple relationship and, b) comprehension that violence episodes result of husbands attempt to control female behaviors they understand as wrong or inadequate. These behaviors have in common the fact they threat the hegemonic model of masculinity and deny, someway, the traditional and naturalized conception of women, as the access to public domain as a result of paid work. Wives detailed the violence contexts, types of aggression (physical, psychological and/or sexual) and physical and emotional injuries. On the other hand, husbands denied occurrences of sexual violence and minimized physical aggressions and their
consequences by describing fights as episodes of little or ephemeral implications to their wives and relationships. Results were discussed based on two main concepts,
hegemonic masculinity and female empowerment, emphasizing the violent reactions of the interviewed husbands when in confront with their wives signs of autonomy and
approaches to male and female prejudices occasioned by man s exclusion from debates about female empowerment.

Women's experience of endogenous factors that maintain an abusive spousal relationship: a phenomenological studyMusson-Seedat, Saudah 19 April 2010 (has links)
M.A. / Spousal abuse has been a practiced for decades across many cultures. According to the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 of S.A. spousal abuse consists of physical, sexual, emotional verbal psychological and economic abuse as well as various forms of intimidation by a spouse. Abuse against women and children seems to be entrenched in gender power equalities and hierarchical gender relations prevalent in society. The advent of feminism, that deals with issues of inequality between the genders, in the nineteenth century highlighted the problem of spousal abuse and challenged cultural and patriarchal notions of women. In South Africa spousal abuse is alarmingly prevalent and deeply ingrained within our society and is often viewed as a normative rather than a deviant practice. The legacy of political repression, a declining economy and diminishing job opportunities, insufficient educational opportunities and racial and ethnic divisions, has for decades generated deep rooted divisions in our society. Women in particular are the historically the victims of political and economic exclusion and have suffered the ravages of patriarchy, sexism and discriminatory practices that have kept them outside of social, political and economic power structures. In this process, abuse against women has been subtly sanctioned by society. This reflects the extent to which exploitation and abuse, in varying forms, have come to pervade the very foundations of our society and have become a socially sanctioned instrument for resolving conflict and promoting change. Because of the continued cultural sanctioning of spousal abuse it is often underreported, making statistics on the subject extremely difficult to obtain. The present study explored the women’s endogenous factors that contributed to the maintenance of their abusive spousal relationship. In essence these factors refer to the thoughts, feelings and beliefs which are significant in the experience of being in an abusive relationship. The study further looked at how these endogenous factors entrap women in abusive relationships. In order to contextualise the experience of being in an abusive spousal relationship the literature review (which makes up the first four chapters 2 of this study) concentrated on several different areas. The first chapter addresses the aims and motivations of the present study. The second chapter deals with established theories and thoughts about the existence of spousal abuse in relationships. Theoretical explanations highlighting some of the endogenous maintaining factors in an abusive spousal relationship are presented. These include psychodynamic theories, systems theory, feminism, eco-systemic approach, social constructionism and postmodernism. The third chapter deals with women’s responses to spousal abuse. The fourth chapter deals with the interaction between women’s socialisation and their response to spousal abuse. It would seem that abused woman find themselves in varying contradictory interactional contexts. Their spouse represents the person who loves them the most, yet he hurts them the most too. Their calls for support by informing others are seen as dishonouring their families yet when they decide to keep the abuse quiet they are condemned. These paradoxes confront abused women when they are in need of help, support and understanding. These cultural and societal norms are confusing and inconsistent, together with various emotions, serve to paralyse the abused women and limit their choices.

[pt] GRUPO DE REFLEXÃO COM MULHERES EM SITUAÇÃO DE VIOLÊNCIA CONJUGAL: TRANSFORMAÇÕES POSSÍVEIS? / [en] REFLEXIONAL GROUP WITH WOMEN IN MARITAL VIOLENCE SITUATION: POSSIBLE TRANSFORMATIONS?MARIA AUGUSTA FISCHER DE OLIVEIRA 23 May 2023 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is the result of a qualitative research in which eight semistructured interviews with women in marital-relation violence situation, who took
part in the reflexional group that was carried out in the Centro Integrado de
Atendimento à Mulher (CIAM) Márcia Lyra, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during a
minimum period of five months, between 2019 and 2021.It aimed to analyze the
possible transformations in the subjectivity of women crossed by the impacts of
marital violence, after their participation in the reflexional group. After data
collection, some analyses were done based on the content analysis method. Two
categories came out from this analysis: From resignation to perception of damage
and impacts of violence: the group of speech space and Experience in the
reflexional group: possible transformations? Such categories were discussed based
on the literature review, and some articulation between the theory and the issues
that came from the narratives was done. We perceived the importance of
participation of women in violence situation in reflexional groups, receiving help
from this device to assist in the confrontation of violence situations and in the
subjective transformation of the participants. This discussion will have the intention
to achieve the formulated objectives and point out new matters for future research.
We noticed that the reflexional group is effective in the construction of a new look
of the woman towards herself and in the development of a more critical stance about
conjugality and search for the rights of equality in relation to the partner.

Characteristics of male batterers and substance abusers: the relationship between sex role attitudes and the approval and severity of the use of physical force by men in a family contextCrossman, Rita Kay 22 June 2010 (has links)
Purpose. This study examined the link between sex-role stereotyping and male violence to provide an empirical base for the development of an appropriate predictive model of marital violence and to improve treatment provided to this population. Method. The sample of study included 44 men participating in programs for batterers and 71 men in programs for substance abusers. Subjects were compared according to approval and severity of use of physical violence, childhood history of violence, level of alcohol use, and sex-role attitudes. Results. Results of the study indicated that level of sex-role egalitarianism was not significantly related to use of marital violence. However, level of violence in childhood, level of alcohol abuse and level of approval of marital violence were related to the use of violence by men in a family context.
Statistical analysis of the data revealed no significant differences between the batterers and substance abusers on the level of sex-role egalitarianism, the level of violence in childhood, nor on the level of approval of marital violence. Significant differences were revealed between the groups on their level of the use of alcohol. Similarities between the two groups suggest joint treatment potential. / Master of Science

Contribution à la connaissance des auteurs de violences conjugales et de la prévention des actes de violences : les groupes d’auteurs de violences conjugales / Contribution to knowledge of the perpetrators of domestic violence and acts of violence prevention : groups of perpetrators of domestic violenceLaporte, Jacques 25 June 2010 (has links)
Marital violence is one really important social phenomenon. The perpetrators in these facts are most of the time, neither monsters, nor perverts, nor mental patients. We had concluded that three kinds of factor are determinative for the study population, which consists of 400 persons accused for marital violence. These three categories of factors were following: social and cultural expectations and attitudes of each partner and finally intrapsychic factors. For the social and cultural factors we have highlighted the concept of psychosocial deprivation. Regarding the attitudes of the spouse, they revolve around double tendency of independence-dependence. For the spouses, we have highlighted attitudes of “maternalité”. Finally, all psychic processes in the perpetrators of the marital violence, which we had met, are organized in a polarity narcissistic identity. The society faced with marital violence implements a judicial system which follows and give more and more resources to this legal arsenal. In the nineties, the programmes were born considering the perpetrators of the marital violence. The programme VIRAGE is among them, founded 2002 in Saint-Etienne (Loire), because of wish of two structures, one association and one hospital. What are the effects and the limits of the groups? The effects of such groups on the recidivism aren’t convincing, but it turns out that they are relevant for the expression, for the representations, for the reconnaissance of the facts, for the understanding of sanction, for the renewal of the relations with children, for the openness to the other modes of communication. Those limits are a programme with the intention of changing. This programme we have described as social support, according to a psycho-educational model, should not be comparable to a judicial system as it will change fundamentally positioning. We propose one program for prevention at the end of the thesis.

The contributing role of some circumstantial factors in fueling family violencePretorius, Cornell Willem 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine whether any relationship existed between
identified circumstantial factors about the living conditions of black families and specific
conflict tactics employed by them in an informal settlement in the Helderberg basin. The
research hypothesis is founded on crime statistics for the past five years for the
Helderberg basin that have shown a generally higher crime incidence/reporting rate for
informal and low cost-housing compared to more affluent areas in the basin (CIAC,
2000). The purpose of exploring the existence of such a relationship was to highlight
particular circumstantial factors, assisting decision makers at local government to
intervene more effectively in terms of funds and resources to ensure safer community.
A semi-structured questionnaire, developed by the author, was used to determine the
presence of circumstantial factors in this community; the Conflict Tactic Scales, (CTS),
developed by Straus (1979), served as the measure to assess the predominant conflict
tactics employed by families in Nomzamo, an informal settlement in the Helderberg
basin. Fifty families (2 members per family) participated in the study with one condition
that one of the members should be a child between the ages of 12 and 17.
The only significant relationship that was obtained was between the circumstantial factorlevel
of education, and the conflict tactic-physical assault between spouses, which
highlights the fact that continued education raises ones' awareness and empowers one to
speak out against violence in the home. Possible reasons were offered, given that no other
significant trends could be determined in the study and recommendations for future
research in this field are made.
'n informele nedersetting in the Helderberg-kom en spesifieke konflik strategieë deur
