Spatial patterns and processes in a regenerating mangrove forest

The global effort to rehabilitate and restore destroyed mangrove forests is unable to keep up with the high mangrove deforestation rates which exceed the average pace of global deforestation by three to five times. Our knowledge of the underlying processes of mangrove forest regeneration is too limited in order to find suitable techniques for the restoration of degraded mangrove areas. The general objective of my dissertation was to improve mangrove restoration by understanding regeneration processes and local plant-plant interaction in a regenerating Avicennia germinans forest. The study was conducted in a high-shore mangrove forest area on the Ajuruteua peninsula, State of Para, Northern Brazil. The dwarf forest consisting of shrub-like trees is recovering from a stand-replacing event caused by a road construction in 1974 which interrupted the tidal inundation of the study area. Consequently, infrequent inundation and high porewater salinity limit tree growth and canopy closure. All trees and seedlings were stem-mapped in six 20 m x 20 m plots which were located along a tree density gradient. Moreover, height, crown extent, basal stem diameter of trees were measured. The area of herbaceous ground vegetation and wood debris were mapped as well. The mapped spatial distribution of trees, seedlings and covariates was studied using point pattern analysis and point process models, such as Gibbs and Thomas point process, in order to infer underlying ecological processes, such as seed dispersal, seedling establishment, tree recruitment and tree interaction. In the first study (chapter 2), I analyzed the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the seedling establishment and tree recruitment of A. germinans during the recolonization of severely degraded mangrove sites using point process modeling. Most seedlings established adjacent to adult trees especially under their crown cover. Moreover, seedling density was higher within patches of the herbaceous salt-marsh plants Blutaparon portulacoides and Sesuvium portulacastrum than in uncovered areas. The higher density of recruited A. germinans trees in herb patches indicated that ground vegetation did not negatively influence tree development of A. germinans. In addition, tree recruitment occurred in clusters. Coarse wood debris had no apparent effect on either life stage. These results confirm that salt-marsh vegetation acts as the starting point for mangrove recolonization and indicate that the positive interaction among trees accelerates forest regeneration. In the second study (chapter 3), I analyzed how intraspecific interaction among A. germinans trees determines their growth and size under harsh environmental conditions. Interaction among a higher number of neighboring trees was positively related to the development of a focal tree. However, tree height, internode length and basal stem diameter were only positively associated in low-density forest stands (1.2 trees m-2) and not in forest stands of higher tree density (2.7 trees m-2). These results indicated a shift from facilitation, i.e. a positive effect of tree interaction, towards a balance between facilitation and competition. In the third study (chapter 4), I used point process modeling and the individual-based model mesoFON to disentangle the impact of regeneration and interaction processes on the spatial distribution of seedlings and trees. In this infrequently inundated area, propagules of A. germinans are only dispersed at a maximum distance of 3 m from their parent tree. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the following seedling establishment is influenced by trees. I was able to differentiate positive and negative tree interactions simulated by the mangrove model mesoFON regardless of dispersal processes based on static tree size information using the mark-correlation function. The results of this dissertation suggest that mangrove forest regeneration in degraded areas is a result of facilitative and not competitive interactions among mangrove trees, seedling and herbaceous vegetation. This has important implications for the restoration of degraded mangrove forest. Degraded mangrove areas are usually restored by planting a high number of evenly spaced seedlings. However, high costs constrain this approach to small areas. Assisting natural regeneration could be a less costly alternative. Herbaceous vegetation plays a crucial role in forest recolonization by entrapping propagules and possibly ameliorating harsh environmental conditions. So far only competition among mangrove trees has been considered during restoration. However, facilitative tree interactions could be utilized by planting seedling clusters in order to assist natural regeneration instead of planting seedlings evenly-spaced over large areas. This dissertation also showed that point pattern analysis and point process modeling can enable forest ecologists to describe the spatial distribution of trees as well as to infer underlying ecological processes.

Impact des stratégies de communication, de marque et de certification sur la propension à payer pour la viande de porc / Influence of communication, branding and certification strategies on consumers’ willingness to pay for pork meat

Résumé : Au Québec, la crise de l’industrie porcine a particulièrement affecté la coopérative La Coop fédérée. En réponse à cette crise, la marque de certification Porc certifié La Coop a été développée afin de personnaliser le produit et se différencier sur les marchés. Considérant le succès du Porc certifié La Coop sur les marchés d’exportation et les préoccupations grandissantes de consommateurs pour la qualité des aliments, La Coop fédérée envisage maintenant de mettre en valeur la marque de certification Porc certifié La Coop auprès de consommateurs québécois. Une résidence au sein de La Coop fédérée nous a permis d’identifier trois principaux enjeux liés à cette mise en valeur : la stratégie de communication, la stratégie de marque et la stratégie de certification. La stratégie de communication correspond au nombre et à la nature des signaux à mettre en valeur sur l’emballage (ex. : respect du bien-être animal, porc nourri à 100 % de grains végétaux et porc élevé sans antibiotiques), la stratégie de marque a trait à la présence ou non d’une marque sur l’emballage (ex. : Lafleur) et la stratégie de certification concerne la présence ou non d’une marque de certification (ex. : Porc certifié La Coop). La principale hypothèse de l’étude précise deux éléments. D’abord, la propension à payer pour la stratégie de communication comportant trois signaux est plus élevée que la propension à payer pour la stratégie de communication comportant un seul signal. La nature additive du modèle multiattributs permet de comprendre ce phénomène. Ensuite, la propension à payer est plus élevée lorsque la stratégie de marque utilise une marque réputée et une marque de certification réputée. Selon la théorie des signaux, il y a alors un lien de vulnérabilité à la marque réputée et un lien de vulnérabilité à la marque de certification réputée, ce qui renforce la crédibilité des signaux. Une expérimentation a été réalisée au moyen d’un panel Internet. L’échantillon final de l’étude est de 1 060 consommateurs québécois. Deux principaux résultats ressortent de l’étude. Premièrement, la propension à payer pour la stratégie de communication comportant trois signaux n’est pas toujours plus élevée que la propension à payer pour la stratégie de communication comportant un signal. Ce résultat s’explique par la dominance du signal bien-être animal au Québec. Deuxièmement, les résultats montrent l’absence d’effet modérateur des stratégies de marque et de certification. Il semble donc que le lien de vulnérabilité ne permet pas toujours de renforcer la crédibilité des signaux. Une autre variable est à considérer pour renforcer la crédibilité des signaux, soit la responsabilité sociale perçue. // Abstract : In Quebec, the crisis in the pork industry particularly affected La Coop fédérée cooperative. In response to this crisis, the certification mark “Porc certifié La Coop” was developed to customize the product and differentiate it in the marketplace. Given the success of the certification mark on the export market and the growing concerns of consumers about food quality, La Coop fédérée is now planning to promote the certification mark Porc certifié La Coop to Quebec consumers. A residency within La Coop fédérée has helped identify three main issues related to this campaign: the communication strategy, the branding strategy and the certification strategy. The communication strategy is the number and nature of the signals presented on the packaging (e.g., animal welfare, 100% grain-fed pork, pork raised without antibiotics), the branding strategy is the presence or absence of a brand on the packaging (e.g., Lafleur) and the certification strategy is the presence or absence of a certification mark on the packaging (e.g., “Porc certifié La Coop”). The main hypothesis of this study specifies two elements. First, the willingness to pay for the communication strategy with three signals will be higher than the willingness to pay for the communication strategy with only one signal. The additive nature of the multi-attribute model explains this phenomenon. Second, the willingness to pay will be higher when the branding strategy uses a reputed brand and the certification strategy uses a reputed certification mark. According to the signaling theory, there is then a vulnerable bond to the reputed brand and a vulnerable bond to the reputed certification mark, which strengthens the credibility of the signals. An experiment was conducted using an Internet panel. The final study sample totaled 1060 Québec consumers. Two main results emerged from the study. First, the willingness to pay for the communication strategy with three signals is not always higher than the willingness to pay for the communication strategy with one signal. This result is explained by the dominance of the animal welfare signal in Québec. Second, results show that the branding and the certification strategies have no moderating effect. This result seems to indicate that the vulnerable bond does not always strengthen the credibility of the signals. Another variable strengthens the credibility of the signals – that of perceived social responsibility.

I projektet har jag utformat ett bord för hemmet som man kan leva med hela livet och som enkelt kan anpassas utifrån olika människors behov, och förändras allt eftersom ens livssituation och behov förändras.  Bordet ska kännas värdefullt och få ett mervärde genom att laddas med personliga berättelser och vara något man vill behålla och bevara.   Samtidigt är bordet tänkt att vara en startpunkt för att få människor att börja reflektera över sina förhållningssätt till konsumtion och vilka värden som är viktiga i livet. I ett längre perspektiv  hoppas jag att detta kan minska den onödiga konsumtionen och bryta den slit- och slängmentalitet som råder i samhället. / In this project I designed a table for the home, that you can live with through the life. It can easily be adapted to different needs and change when the life situation and needs change. The table should feel useful and get added value by telling personal stories and be something you want to keep and preserve.   Meanwhile, the table intended to be a starting point to get people to start thinking about their approach to consumption, and which values that are important in their lives, and in the long run reduce the unnecessary consumption.

An analysis of the intercalation of Mark 11:12-25 in light of narrative criticism and the oral aspect of Mark

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mark 11:12-25 has been identified as an intercalation or sandwich structure (A-B-A) by many scholars as consisting of three linked episodes: the cursing of the fig tree (11:12- 14), the cleaning of the temple (11:15-19), and the withered fig tree (11:20-25). Using the function of intercalation, Mark 11:12-25 is then interpreted symbolically as a prophecy of the destruction of the temple. This interpretation, however, the researcher argues, is implausible. To substantiate this claim, the research aims to interpret Mark 11:12-25 in the light of narrative criticism and the oral aspect of Mark. Chapter 2 lays the basic foundation for the current research. This includes a brief history of the study of Mark, the historical interpretation of Mark 11:12-25, a comparison between Matthew and Mark, and of studies concerned with intercalation. Various differing opinions of intercalation are given that complicate our understanding of its function. The main goal of chapter 3 is to examine Mark 11:12-25 according to three narrative elements, namely setting, characters and events. On the grounds that every scene in Mark 11 is connected naturally in the time and space setting, it will be argued that Mark did not arrange the two stories in Mark 11:12-25 as intercalation with a theological purpose. Although some argue that the two stories do not fit the character of Jesus, on the contrary, it will be argued that both stories strengthens the authority and power of Jesus as it is depicted in the Gospel of Mark. If Jesus teaching is considered (11:20-25), then the symbolic interpretation of the prophecy of the destruction of the temple cannot be sustained. Chapter 4 deals with the oral aspect of Mark. Mark’s community were in all likelihood not readers, but hearers. Dewey offers some characteristics of oral narratives, particularly their additive and aggregative structures and their participatory character. These, she argues, helps the reader to interpret the various aspects of Mark that have divided both scholars and literary critics of the Gospel. Therefore, the fig tree story and the temple story will be examined in the light of the oral aspect of Mark. The final chapter will offer a summary of each chapter and a synthesized conclusion. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Om Markus 11:12-25 korrek te interpreteer is vir 'n lang tyd reeds ʼn debatteerbare saak. Windows to the polemics against the so-called Jews and Jezebel in Revelation : insights from historical and co(n)textual analysis

The thesis mainly studies social-historical co(n)texts to understand the polemic in Revelation against the so-called ‘Jews’ and a self-professed prophetess named ‘Jezebel’ (Rev 2-3). The enquiry centres on two areas: (1) the underlying issues to the polemic against the abovenamed contenders, and (2) a reading of a polemical technique in the text against prophetess ‘Jezebel’ through a specific web of associations involving two ‘Jezebels’ and a great harlot. Preliminary studies provide the framework for the main enquiry. ‘Historical anchorage’ is attained in the echoes/allusions of the beast from the sea-abyss to emperor Titus (Ch. 2) and the ‘Satanic trio’ and their cult (Rev 13) to the Flavian dynasty and cult (Ch. 3). A real crisis for Christians is seen late in Domitian’s time involving pressure from the Flavian provincial temple, widespread false accusations of άθεότηζ άσέβεια or maiestas and pressures from Domitian’s rigorous exaction of the Jewish tax. These matters are seen to implicate both Jewish and Gentile Christians (Ch. 4). The figure of the beasts, the social pressure from the imperial cult, and the vulnerability of Christians reflected in these preliminary studies contribute to a fuller understanding of the anti-Judaistic polemic. There are reasons to think that the anti-Judaistic polemic in Rev 2:9-10 and 3:9 is not aimed at the Jewish community per se, but acts to discourage Christians from feigning affiliation with the synagogue to escape social pressure from the imperial cult. There is a growing importance of the imperial cult towards the end of the first century C.E. in Asia Minor, and a judaizing tendency among some Christians there late first century and beyond. Importantly, Rev 14:9- 11 reflects the author’s major concern about (1) participation in the imperial cult and (2) Christian ‘judaizing’ behaviour (the mark of beast as tefillin worn by outsiders to Rabbinic Judaism). Under the author’s creative hand, the beast from the land/false prophet becomes the ‘Satanic’ source of pressure to these two aspects (cf. 13:11-17; Ch. 5). The second major part demonstrates a polemical technique in the text that binds the prophetess ‘Jezebel’ with an OT Queen and the Great Harlot (Rev 17-18). Social meals with drinking parties in guilds/associations and the imperial cult could have been a common context for allurements to sexual immorality and eating idol-food that ‘Jezebel’ advocates. I construct a picture of the prophetess ‘Jezebel’, who perhaps doubles as a patroness of a trade guild incorporating members from the Thyatiran church. Pagan ‘mysteries’ could have been a part of her activities (Ch. 6). I also examine the Great Harlot within the Graeco-Roman context giving attention to her depiction as tyrannical and sexually immoral queens and assimilated goddesses, such as Isis, Cybele, Aphrodite and Roma (Ch. 7). The OT Queen Jezebel is also studied within her social-historical context. She is seen to take on the image of the ‘woman at the window’ (2 Kgs 9:30), reflective of goddess Astarte or her temple servant. Her role as the ‘הבׂבג’ (great lady; 2 Kgs 10:13) and queen mother also fits that of another goddess, Asherah, whose prophets she hosts (Ch. 8). The destruction of Queen Jezebel and that of the Great Harlot contain a polemic against pagan deities they both embody. The prophetess veering into pagan grounds of idolatry is bound tightly with them and is indirectly castigated for her syncretistic practices (Ch. 9). Overall, the author’s polemic in Revelation acts to deter Christians from veering into the grounds of ‘Satan’—the imperial cult and the synagogue (as the author puts it)—and against behaviours, such as sexual license and eating food offered to idols, that would allow Christians to easily enter contexts involving pagan worship.

De la réception filmique à la participation ludique : prolégomènes d’une étude sur l’énonciation vidéoludique

Ce mémoire étudie la dynamique communicationnelle et interactionnelle entre un joueur et un système de jeu par l’entremise des théories de l’énonciation et de la cognition. Par une analyse des jeux vidéo d’horreur en perspective à la première personne, il s’agit de conceptualiser une spirale heuristique de l’énonciation à partir des principes théoriques du Cycle Magique (Arsenault et Perron, 2009). Le propos se focalise sur la manière dont le joueur expérimente et traite les propositions ludiques et les propositions ludodiégétiques. L’intérêt est d’observer comment la valeur réflexive des marques de jeu et des marques de jouabilité sert à départager des relations d’attribution entre des formulations énonciatives (textuelles, verbales, visuelles, sonores ou procédurales) et des agents énonciatifs. Cette recherche rend compte, d’une part, de la gestion cognitive des faits énonciatifs et, d’autre part, de la modulation de leurs valeurs d’immédiateté-hypermédiateté et de leurs rapports de liaison/déliaison avec les agents énonciatifs. Il est expliqué que cette activité cognitive du joueur dirige la schématisation d’attitudes interactionnelles servant à structurer la signification – ludique ou narrative – des propositions ludiques générées au cours de l’activité de jeu. L’analyse cible des processus de mise en phase performative et de mise en phase méta-systémique ludique permettant la détermination de vecteurs d’immersion. En fonction du caractère d’opacité ou de transparence des vecteurs, il est question d’indiquer comment la posture d’expérience du joueur oscille entre un continuum immersif qui polarise une expérience systémique et une expérience diégétisée. / This master thesis studies the communicative and interactional dynamics between a gamer and a game system through the theories of film enunciation and cognition. By analyzing first-person survival horror video games, the purpose is to conceptualize a heuristic spiral of enunciation following the theoretical frame of the Magic Cycle (Arsenault and Perron, 2009). It will be explained that the self-reflexive nature of “game mark” (marque de jeu) and “gameplay mark” (marque de jouabilité) serve to assigned a relationships between an enunciative formulation (textual, verbal, visual, auditory or procedural), the contextual details, and an agent of enunciation. This methodology aim to analyze the gamer’s cognitive negotiation of the immediacy-hypermediacy value through the setting of “linking relations” (rapport de liaison) and “unlinking relations” (rapport de déliaison). This will explained how the gamer produced meaning from some “ludics propositions” and “ludodiegetics propostitions” in order to proceed with the cognitive mapping of interactional attitudes. It will be discuss that through the process of “performative attuning” (mise en phase performative) and “meta-systemic ludic attuning” (mise en phase méta-systémique ludique), these propositions are then introduced as immersive vector. Depending on the vector’s immediacy-hypermediacy value, the gamer’s experience oscillates on an immersive continuum which polarized a systemic experience and a diegetic experience.

Jesus går på vattnet : Vad händer med bibelberättelsen när den återberättas för barn?

I denna uppsats studeras, främst med hjälp av en narrativ analys, berättelsen om när Jesus går på vattnet i Barnens bibel med text av Anne de Vries och svensk översättning av Ylva Eggehorn, Barnbibeln med text av Gwen Ellis och svensk översättning av Åsa Hofverberg och De yngstas bibel med text av Karyn Henley och svensk översättning av Ulla-Stina Rask. Syftet med uppsatsen att se om några, och i sådana fall vilka, förändringar som sker när en bibelberättelse återberättas för barn, och sedan se hur dessa påverkar berättelsen. Med hjälp av Elizabeth Struthers Malbons metod för narrativ analys där berättelsen studeras utifrån karaktärer, miljö, handling och retorik studeras barnbiblarna och Matteusevangeliet först var för sig. Dessa jämförs sedan med varandra för att se om det går att se några likheter och skillnader och slutligen se hur de grepp som författarna tagit påverkar bibelberättelsen.

A transdisciplinary study of embodiment in HCI, AI and New Media

The aim of this thesis is to report on a transdisciplinary approach, regarding the complexity of thinking about human embodiment in relation to machine embodiment. A practical dimension of this thesis is to elicit some principles for the design and evaluation of virtual embodiment. The transdisciplinary approach suggests, firstly, that a single discipline or reality is, on its own, not sufficient to explain the complexity and dynamism of the embodied interaction between the human and machine. Secondly, the thesis argues for thinking of transdisciplinary research as a process of individuation, becoming or transduction, that is, as a process of mediation between heterogeneous approaches rather than perceiving research as a stabilized cognitive schema designed to accumulate new outcomes to the already-there reality. Arguing for going beyond the individualized approaches to embodiment, this thesis analyzes three cases where the problems that appear in one case are resolved through the analysis of the following one. Consisting of three phases, this research moves from objective scientific 'reality' to more phenomenological, subjective and complex realities. The first study employs a critical review of embodied conversational agents in human-computer interaction (HCI) in a learning context using a comparative meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was applied because most of the studies for evaluating embodiment are experimental. A learning context was selected because the number of studies is suitable for meta-analysis and the findings could be generalized to other contexts. The analysis reveals that there is no 'persona effect', that is, the expected positive effect of virtual embodiment on the participant's affective, perceptive and cognitive measures. On the contrary, it shows the reduction of virtual embodiment to image and a lack of consideration for the participant's embodiment and interaction, in addition to theoretical and methodological shortcomings. The second phase solves these problems by focusing on Mark Hansen's phenomenological account of embodiment in new media. Nevertheless, his views of embodied perception and affection are underpinned by a subjective patriarchal account leading to object/subject and body/work polarizations. The final phase resolves this polarization by analyzing the controversial work of Alan Turing on intelligent machinery. The research provides a different reading of the Turing Machine based on Simondon's concept of individuation, repositioning its materiality from the abstract non-existent to the actual-virtual realm and investigating the reasons for its abstraction. It relates the emergence of multiple human-machine encounters in Turing's work to the complex counter-becoming of what it describes as 'the Turing Machine compound'.

Repentance in Christian late antiquity, with special reference to Mark the Monk, Barsanuphius and John of Gaza, and John Climacus

From its beginnings, Christianity has been fundamentally conditioned by the idea of repentance. However, while the institutional practice of repentance in the early Christian world has received much scholarly attention, relatively little exists which deals with the development and applications of the wider concept (of which its institutional aspect is only a part). The purpose of this dissertation is to provide both a re-assessment and a re-framing of this foundational concept of repentance in Christian late antiquity, with special reference to formative Greek monastic sources from the fifth to seventh centuries. Following a discussion of scholarship, terms, and methodology in chapter one, the question of defining repentance in the Greek patristic world is addressed in chapter two, looking first at the major sources for later approaches (the Septuagint, the New Testament, and Classical/Hellenistic texts). A significant re-appraisal of the dominant scholarly narrative of repentance in the early church will be offered in the following chapter, making way for a close study of the chosen monastic authors: Mark the Monk, Barsanuphius and John of Gaza, and John Climacus in turn. A threefold framework whereby their respective approaches to repentance can be understood in their integrity and diversity will be suggested, involving 1) initial or 'cognisant' repentance, in which the sinner recognizes his or her fallen state and turns it heavenward; 2) 'existential' repentance, which involves the living out of repentance as a way of life, governing all the Christian's actions and intentions; 3) 'Christ-like' repentance, which serves as the summit and ultimate goal of the Christian's personal repentance, whereby the loving and sacrificial 'repentance' of Christ for others and the world at large is assimilated and worked out in the Christian's own life. It will be argued that this framework provides a new and significant hermeneutical lens through which not simply the early Christian concept of repentance in itself can be better understood, but also through which the development of early Christian self-identity and self-perception, particularly in an ascetic context, can be gauged.
