In vitro cytotoxicity tests are one of the basic methods of assessing the biological response to material because they are faster, cheaper, easier for repeating and evaluating compared to experiments carried out on animals and humans. They are used as a kind of screening test for evaluating the biosafety of materials. Unlike cell culture, studies involving experimental animals provide better insight into the biocompatibility of materials due to the possibility of monitoring the complex immune response of a living organism. They are considered necessary for assessing the biological response to new material before it is used on humans. Many aspects of a biological response cannot be reproduced with in vitro tests, including blood interaction, wound healing, hypersensitivity reactions, carcinogenesis, chronic inflammation. Animal experiments provide information about these types of effects without exposing humans to risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of polymer objects on the basis of epoxy resins Accura® ClearVue ™ (chemical composition: 4.4' Isopropylidenedicyclohexanol, oligomeric reaction products with 1-chloro-2.3-epoxypropane (40-65%), a mixture of triaryl sulfonium salt (50% propylene carbonate and 50% of a triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate salt) (1- 10%) and 3-ethyl-3-hydroxymethyl-oxetane (10-20%). Both tests were conducted on cell cultures L929 (mouse fibroblasts) and MRC-5 (human fibroblasts). An assessment of the biocompatibility of the tested material was done on the basis of an oral mucosa irritation test on a hamster cheek pouch as defined by ISO 10993-10: 2010. The biocompatibility of the material was also tested with the implantation of a samples into the dorsal subcutaneous tissue of a Wistar rats. El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of aqueous solutions of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) in different concentrations on bond strength to eroded dentin up to 6 months, using normal dentin as a control. METHODS: Exposed flat dentin of extracted third molars was only ground with 600-grit SiC paper/1 minute (normal dentin - N), or subsequently eroded by a regular-cola soft-drink (eroded dentin - E). N and E were acid-etched, washed, dried and rehydrated with 1.5 μL, respectively, of distillated water (control - NC / EC); of 0.004% CHX (N0.004% / E0.004%); or of 2% CHX (N2% / E2%). Adper Single Bond 2 was applied in all specimens and resin composite buildups were constructed with Filtek Z350. Specimens were sectioned in beams, which were tested (μTBS) immediately or after 6 months of aging. RESULTS: Microtensile bond strength to eroded dentin was always significantly lower than that to normal dentin. Application of tested CHX solutions did not exert a significant effect immediately; however, after aging, the 2% CHX prevented abrupt bond strength loss both to eroded and normal dentin. / Revisión por pares

Seventy two rats ( Rattus norvegicus albinus ) were used in this experiment. The animals were divided into four experimental groups: Group 1 (control), without implants; Group 2, pericardium medullar implants, 12 hours; Group 3, medullar implants of tendon, 24 hours, with the bigger axes of collagen fibers parallel to the bigger axes of the tibia; and Group 4, medullar implants of tendon, 24 hours, with the bigger axes of collagen fibers perpendicular to the bigger axes of the tibia. After the experimental surgery, the evolution of the repair process was microscopically evaluated in 7, 15 and 30 days post-surgery. The results demonstrated the implanted matrices to be biocompatible and to function as a scaffold inducing the formation of bone, mainly in Group 4. At first, the cellularity follows the arrangement of collagen fibers, obtaining a growing multidirectional arrangement, suggesting that the direction and the orientation are related to the direction and to the magnitude of the stress applied to the bone.

Laboratory Evaluation of Water-Repellent Soils for Water Harvesting

Fink, Dwayne H. 20 April 1974 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1974 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 19-20, 1974, Flagstaff, Arizona / Reported are laboratory evaluations to screen water-repellent materials and treatments before testing them in the field. Water repellency tests were conducted on paraffin wax, a wax emulsion and silicon, lard, and a liquid dust suppressant. Six water repellency tests showed that the high rates of paraffin wax and all rates of the dust suppressant produced highly water-repellent soil surfaces. The six water repellency tests were: (1) the aqueous-alcohol drop test for determination of the 90 degree surface tension for a porous solid, (2) the water drop penetration time test, (3) the relative height of a large sessile water drop resting on the smoothed, treated soil surface, (4) and (5) the presence and persistence of air bubbles trapped between the soil-water interface, and test (6) was made to note whether the large sessile water drop from test (3) would infiltrate the soil or evaporate. Tests (3), (4), and (5) proved the most useful of the six methods for measuring water repellency. Soil type had no significant influence on degree of water repellency as measured in the laboratory by these six tests.

Nerve guides manufactured from photocurable polymers to aid peripheral nerve repair

Pateman, C.J., Harding, A.J., Glen, A., Taylor, C.S., Christmas, C.R., Robinson, P.P., Rimmer, Stephen, Boissonade, F.M., Claeyssens, F., Haycock, J.W. 2015 February 1914 (has links)
Yes / The peripheral nervous system has a limited innate capacity for self-repair following injury, and surgical intervention is often required. For injuries greater than a few millimeters autografting is standard practice although it is associated with donor site morbidity and is limited in its availability. Because of this, nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) can be viewed as an advantageous alternative, but currently have limited efficacy for short and large injury gaps in comparison to autograft. Current commercially available NGC designs rely on existing regulatory approved materials and traditional production methods, limiting improvement of their design. The aim of this study was to establish a novel method for NGC manufacture using a custom built laser-based microstereolithography (muSL) setup that incorporated a 405 nm laser source to produce 3D constructs with approximately 50 mum resolution from a photocurable poly(ethylene glycol) resin. These were evaluated by SEM, in vitro neuronal, Schwann and dorsal root ganglion culture and in vivo using a thy-1-YFP-H mouse common fibular nerve injury model. NGCs with dimensions of 1 mm internal diameter x 5 mm length with a wall thickness of 250 mum were fabricated and capable of supporting re-innervation across a 3 mm injury gap after 21 days, with results close to that of an autograft control. The study provides a technology platform for the rapid microfabrication of biocompatible materials, a novel method for in vivo evaluation, and a benchmark for future development in more advanced NGC designs, biodegradable and larger device sizes, and longer-term implantation studies.

A non-conventional multilevel flying-capacitor converter topology

Gulpinar, Feyzullah January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This research proposes state-of-the-art multilevel converter topologies and their modulation strategies, the implementation of a conventional flying-capacitor converter topology up to four-level, and a new four-level flying-capacitor H-Bridge converter confi guration. The three phase version of this proposed four-level flying-capacitor H-Bridge converter is given as well in this study. The highlighted advantages of the proposed converter are as following: (1) the same blocking voltage for all switches employed in the con figuration, (2) no capacitor midpoint connection is needed, (3) reduced number of passive elements as compared to the conventional solution, (4) reduced total dc source value by comparison with the conventional topology. The proposed four-level capacitor-clamped H-Bridge converter can be utilized as a multilevel inverter application in an electri fied railway system, or in hybrid electric vehicles. In addition to the implementation of the proposed topology in this research, its experimental setup has been designed to validate the simulation results of the given converter topologies.

Development of Novel Wearable Sensor System Capable of Measuring and Distinguishing Between Compression and Shear Forces for Biomedical Applications

Dimitrija Dusko Pecoski (8797031) 21 June 2022 (has links)

There are no commercially available wearable shoe in-sole sensors that are capable of measuring and distinguishing between shear and compression forces. Companies have already developed shoe sensors that simply measure pressure and make general inferences on the collected data with elaborate software [2, 3, 4, 5]. Researchers have also attempted making sensors that are capable of measuring shear forces, but they are not well suited for biomedical applications [61, 62, 63, 64]. This work focuses on the development of a novel wearable sensor system that is capable of identifying and measuring shear and compression forces through the use of capacitive sensing. Custom hardware and software tools such as materials test systems and capacitive measurement systems were developed during this work. Numerous sensor prototypes were developed, characterized, and optimized during the scope of this project. Upon analysis of the data, the best capacitive measurement system developed in this work utilized the CAV444 IC chip, whereas the use of the Arduino-derived measurement system required data filtering using median and Butterworth zero phase low pass filters. The highest dielectric constant reported from optimization experiments yielded 9.7034 (+/- 0.0801 STD) through the use of 60.2% by weight calcium copper titanate and ReoFlex-60 silicone. The experiments suggest certain sensors developed in this work feasibly measure and distinguish between shear and compressional forces. Applications for such technology focus on improving quality of life in areas such as managing diabetic ulcer formation, preventing injuries, optimizing performance for athletes and military personnel, and augmenting the scope of motion capture in biomechanical studies.
