Division I Female Soccer Players: Development of the Self Across Time and Interactional Groups

Rice, Andrew Alan 09 November 1999 (has links)
This study is intended to explore the interactive effect of various interpersonal groups and longitudinal maturation on the socialization of individuals within a culture. It will deal with conflict resolution and the formation of a transitory sense of self informed by George Herbert Mead's perspective with an emphasis on symbolic interaction. I have chosen as my sample group a division I female college soccer team in the eastern United States . My time as an assistant coach has given me access to the daily lives of these players for a two year period during which I have acted as a participant observer. Although the study is limited to a small group of elite athletes, it is presumed that similar processes are at work each time an individual enters a new social setting or attempts to reconcile conflicting norms between different groups. When such groups collide, the individual is forced to conform to one at the expense of the other(s). This creates what I will call deviant conformity / Master of Science

Mediating Life: Animality, Artifactuality, and the Distinctiveness of the Human in the Philosophical Anthropologies of Scheler, Plessner, Gehlen, and Mead

Honenberger, Phillip January 2013 (has links)
What is a human being? In the early 20th century, the "philosophical anthropologists" Max Scheler, Helmuth Plessner, and Arnold Gehlen approached this question through a comparison between human and non-human organisms' species-typical interaction with environments and an account of the conditions of the emergence of "higher" cognitive and agentive functions on this basis. In this text I offer a critical review of the central arguments of Scheler, Plessner, and Gehlen on these issues, as well as of their debates with figures such as Jakob von Uexküll, Martin Heidegger, and G. H. Mead. I take note of the consequences of various answers to this question for the interpretation of human beings' dually biological and cultural status and for the theory of the human self or person. I argue that the approaches of Plessner and Gehlen, despite objections raised by Hans Joas and others, have important advantages over those of Scheler, Uexküll, Heidegger, and Mead, as well as over recent suggestions by Korsgaard and Tomasello. I conclude by outlining a reconstructed philosophical anthropology that supports a new perspective on the question of human distinctiveness and on a number of related questions in the context of contemporary debates. / Philosophy

On the Effects of Noise on Parameter Identification Optimization Problems

Vugrin, Kay Ellen White 06 May 2005 (has links)
The calibration of model parameters is an important step in model development. Commonly, system output is measured, and model parameters are iteratively varied until the model output is a good match to the measured system output. Optimization algorithms are often used to identify the model parameter values. The presence of noise is difficult to avoid when physical processes are used to calibrate models due to measurement error, model structure error, and errors arising from numerical techniques and approximate solutions. Our study focuses on the effects of noise in parameter identification optimization problems. We generate six test problems, including five perturbations of a smooth problem. A previously studied groundwater parameter identification problem serves as our seventh test problem. We test the Nelder-Mead Algorithm, a combination of the Nelder-Mead Algorithm and Simulated Annealing, and the Shuffled Complex Evolution Method on these test problems. Comparison of optimization results for these problems reveals the effects of noise on optimization performance, including an increase in fitness values and a decrease in the number of fit evaluations. We vary the values of the internal algorithmic parameters to determine the effects of different values and present numerical results that indicate that changing the values of the algorithmic parameters can cause profound differences in optimization results for all three algorithms. A variation of the generally accepted parameter values for the Nelder-Mead Algorithm is recommended, and we determine that the Nelder-Mead/Simulated Annealing Hybrid and Shuffled Complex Evolution Method are too problem dependent for general recommendations for parameter values. Finally, we prove new convergence results for the Nelder-Mead/Simulated Annealing Hybrid in both smooth and noisy cases. / Ph. D.

Nascimento, Luiz Sérgio Vasconcelos do 28 April 2006 (has links)
Para estimular a utilização mais eficiente dos volumes armazenados, no suprimento das demandas hídricas dos estágios futuros, são aplicados fatores de redução de custo (FRCs) sobre os volumes armazenados remanescentes no final de cada estágio / One of the most important uses for system analysis in water resources planning is the determination of the operational strategy for multiple reservoir systems, fundamental to better water supply, whose operation is the purpose of analysis that may involve many operation constraints and decision variables. Stay clear, so, the need of optimize their operation, creating in this manner, its best utilization with the less cost to society. This research on the optimal operation of a reservoir system has hydropower generation as its main objective. The optimization framework employs a hybrid model which corresponds to a combination of genetic algorithms and SIMPLEX of Nelder e Mead before employing successive linear programming. Accordant to recent Reis et. al (2005) proposal, the problem of optimizing is solved through decomposition in independents sequential sub problems related to each stage of operation, connected among themselves by supposing that reservoir storage at the end of each stage corresponds to the system state at the beginning of the subsequent stage. To promote the most efficient use of storage for water supply in future stages, FRC (cost reduction factors) are applied on the storage left at the end of each stage

The generated solutions are graphically presented through the transmission line profile and its 3-dimension representation upon the elevation map of the area. For the projects evaluation, elements of structural analysis are used, highlighting the Matrix Structural Analysis for the study of efforts and deformations in the towers and their components. Three methods are proposed, each one using different approaches. First, it will be shown an optimization algorithm based on Evolutionary Computation, characterized by the application of natural selection on individuals generated from mutations and genetic crossover. The second algorithm was inspired by the well-known Nelder-Mead optimization method. The triangular transformations addressed in the original method were adapted and physically implemented to transmission lines. The last optimization algorithm presented is a hybridization of the two previous methods. Finally, a performance comparison of the algorithms, in which each one of them will be applied to three different cases, will be carried out in order to validate them.

Title: Identity management on Facebook: a qualitative study in approaches to personal identity between two different age groups on the most public stage of our time (Identitetshantering på Facebook: En kvalitativ studie om förhållningssättet till den egna identiteten hos två olika åldersgrupper på vår tids mest offentliga scen). Number of pages: 43. Author: Isabelle Kåge. Tutor: Amelie Hössjer. Course: Media and Communication Studies C. Period: Fall Semester 2010. University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University. Purpose/Aim: To identify differences in attitudes towards and management of personal identity onFacebook within two different age groups. Material/Method: Personal interviews, literature, electronic sources, Internet sources. Main results: Those in the younger age group present themselves differently depending on the person or persons with whom they are communicating. Those in the older age group however, present themselves in a more consequent matter based upon the visibility their actions have to all their friends on Facebook as a whole. The definitions of certain elements on Facebook, such as what constitutes private information or anexcess of photo-tags, differ between the two age groups. Comments and feedback differ in importance and effect between the two age groups. Those in the younger age group are more likely to modify their attitudes towards their identities based upon the functions of Facebook. Those in the older age group are more likely to modify their Facebook use based upon their attitudes towards their identities. Keywords: Facebook, identity, Goffman, Mead, generation, age groups, social media, social psychology.

LE PROCESSUS DE TRANSMISSION DES VALEURS CHEZ LES JEUNES : Etude comparative de trois configurations colombiennes

Londono Orozco, Ernesto 13 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
