PLANKTONIC DYNAMICS AS AN INDICATOR OF WATER QUALITY IN LAKE MEAD

The purpose of this investigation was to identify the zooplankton arc. phytoplankton found in Lake Mead, to quantify their presence, to elucidate some temporal and spatial patterns, and to investigate some of the planktonic responses to physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Phytoplankton and zooplankton population samples were collected from eight different sites at 11 depths at six times over an annual period. These samples were collected with a 6 -liter Van Dorn sampler. Phytoplankton samples were preserved in Lugol's solution and the zooplankton were placed in formalin preservative. The 503 zooplankton population samples were scored in a ruled counting chamber using a stereomicroscope. Eighteen species of zooplankton were identified. The 274 phytoplankton samples were placed on Millipore filters and slides were prepared for examination with phase contrast microscopy. A total of at least 79 algae were found to comprise the phytoplankton flora. The zooplankton for the most part were rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods. Keratella, the principal rotifer, was found to be diacmic and Bosmina, Daphnia, the calanoid, cyclopoid, and nauplii copepods were monacmic. Spatial relationships across the reservoir indicate that Bosmina and cyclopoid copepods are water quality indicators. The late summer phytoplankton were mostly Cyanophyta with populations as large as 5 X 106 cells /liter occurring in Boulder Basin. Winter samples contained mostly diatoms and cryptomonads, while the spring phytoplankton was mainly Chlorophyta. The early summer flora showed a mixture of Chrysophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cryptophyta. Biomass determinations were made from average cell volumes and population counts. The blue -green alga Oscillatoria had the greatest biomass during the late summer period. Bacillariophyta reached a volumetric peak in late winter and the Chlorophyta in spring. The Cryptophyta showed a peak in winter while the Chrysophyta, represented mostly by the presence of Dinobryon, showed greatest population sizes in early summer. The Euglenophyta and Pyrrophyta were relatively unimportant groups of the biomass. Weak nocturnal migrations were exhibited by Asplanchna sp., Keratella cochlearis, and Bosmina longirostris. This conclusion was derived from an analysis of variance of the diurnal data. The copepod groups showed no migration patterns. Since this study was performed when the lake was isothermal, it is inferred that migration is a phenomenon not influenced by temperature. A transect study in Boulder Basin during the winter showed that Daphnia, Asplanchna, Chydorus, and Polyarthra, and possibly calanoid copepods, appear to be littoral, and are found mostly in the Las Vegas Wash area. Phytoplankton counts showed evidence for decreases in Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Cryptophyta across the basin from the wash to the dam area. Pyrrophyta, Chrysophyta, and Euglenophyta were not important in the phytoplankton flora at this season. Nygaard's and Pearsall's ratios and Palmer's pollution -tolerant algae indices were applied to the phytoplankton data. Results of the Nygaard and Pearsall ratios, the migration study, the transect study, and the population studies indicate that Boulder Basin is eutrophic.

Pour une compréhension de l'insécurité liée à la victimisation criminelle chez les ainés une perspective interactionniste

Le but de notre mémoire de maîtrise est de comprendre l'insécurité liée à la victimisation criminelle chez les aînés par leurs interactions avec leur environnement. Notre démarche de recherche est compréhensive, plus précisément nous nous inspirons des idées théoriques de l'interactionnisme symbolique. Par la contextualisation de la problématique de recherche selon une recension des écrits exhaustive des études compréhensives, nous avons établi deux objectifs de recherche : (1) Comprendre les types d'interactions entourant le sentiment d'insécurité liée à la victimisation criminelle dans la vie des aînés ; (2) Comprendre l'impact des interactions sur les stratégies quotidiennes empruntées par les aînés afin de composer avec le sentiment d'insécurité liée à la victimisation criminelle. Afin de répondre à ces objectifs de recherche, nous avons mené seize entretiens semidirigés auprès d'individus âgés entre 63 et 91 ans. Les résultats de recherche mettent l'emphase sur les représentations du crime, de la criminalité, de l'insécurité, de la peur du crime et de la vieillesse chez les aînés. De plus, nous observons diverses interactions sociales et stratégies quotidiennes concernant le sentiment d'insécurité. La nature des résultats nous amène à proposer que le sentiment de sécurité exprimé par les participants dissimule une insécurité ontologique. Autrement dit, les participants sont à la fois fragilisés par des"attitudes organisées" et à la fois assaillis par la finalité humaine.

<p>The purpose of this essay is to critically review Pierre Bourdieus contribution to agency – structure debate. I will do this with help from the thinking of George Herbert Mead. My aim is to show that Mead can provide valuable knowledge to Bourdieus theory.</p><p>Pierre Bourdieus notion of habitus is his solution to the dilemma between agency and structure. It is in the habitus that the objective structures meet the inner, subjective structures and this results in various actions. Bourdieu claims that the relation between the habitus and the outer structures causes dispositions to ‘ways of reacting’. His aim with the notion of habitus is to show why the society follows an often strict regularity. Bourdieus is however often accused of being a determinist. I do not totally agree with this criticism but I claim that Bourdieus hasn’t done enough to stipulate his middle way between freedom and constraint and agency and structure. The habitus seems to be more or less immune to mayor upset. Bourdieu is often unclear of how the individual uses his dispositions in various situations. Bourdieus is letting the habitus to too much work. He sometimes seems to forget that it is an individual beyond the habitus. He underestimates the power of humans to make choices of their own. There seems to be more to the notion of agency then the habitus can fully capture. Thus we turn to the thinking of George Herbert Mead. I claim that Mead offers a way out of Bourdieus dilemma between agency and structure. He does this by focusing on what happens in the particular situation. Mead believes that the society reproduces itself in two different ways. There is the ‘unreflexive’ way which has certain similarities with Bourdieus way of thinking. The main difference between Mead and Bourdieu is that Mead claims that there is another way that the society reproduces itself. This is what he calls the reflexive reproduction. If the individual encounters resistance he/she becomes aware of the habitual expectations he/she brought in to the situation. The resistance causes a break in the world the individual takes for granted. The individual then reflexively adapt there actions to the situation. The break makes the individual aware of the world, and this is what lacks in Bourdieus theory. The individual can think and also act in opposite to their habits or habitus. This is what can cause the habitus to change.</p>

Att skapa livshistoria : En analys av dokumentation i förskolan

Med den nya läroplanen har dokumentationskravet stärkts (skolverket, 2010a). Skolverket har sedan läroplanen för förskolan kom 1998 rekommenderat verktyget ”pedagogisk dokumentation” (Emilson &amp; Pramling Samuelsson 2014). Syftet med mitt arbete har varit att försöka förstå hur vuxna i förskolan bidrar till skapandet av barnens livshistoria genom dokumentationen. Jag har valt att utgå ifrån George Meads tankar och hans begrepp I, ME och den generaliserande andre och hur vi skapar varandras identiteter. För att undersöka detta valde jag att utföra etnografiska observationer på en förskola i en förort till Stockholm. I mitt resultat har jag kunnat se att dokumentationen har många olika syften, så som utvärderingsinstrument, påvisa för föräldrar och ledning vad avdelningen arbetar med, visualisera pedagogernas barnsyn, som del i arbetet med barnen samt som reflektionsverktyg för pedagogerna. Målgruppen för dokumentationen är också flera, ledning, föräldrar, barn och pedagoger.  Jag har även kunna identifiera vad pedagogerna väljer, och inte väljer, att dokumentera från sin verksamhet med barnen samt försökt tolka detta mot Meads tankar. ”To be seen is to exist, and that is what it means to have a good childhood” skriver Sparrman &amp; Lindgren (2010), och i mitt arbete har jag upptäckt att det är ett citat värt att reflektera kring.

Optimized NURBS Curve Based G-Code Part Program for CNC Systems

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is widely used in many industries that needs high speed machining of the parts with high precision, accuracy and good surface finish. In order to avail this the generation of the CNC part program size will be immensely big and leads to an inefficient process, which increases the delivery time and cost of products. This work presents the automation of high-accuracy CNC tool trajectory planning from CAD to G-code generation through optimal NURBs surface approximation. The proposed optimization method finds the minimum number of NURBS control points for a given admissible theoretical cord error between the desired and manufactured surfaces. The result is a compact part program that is less sensitive to data starvation than circular and spline interpolations with potential better surface finish. The proposed approach is demonstrated with the tool path generation of an involute gear profile and a topologically optimized structure is developed using this approach and then finally it is 3D printed.
