Going with the flow : Chinese travel journalism in change

Bao, Jiannu January 2005 (has links)
The thesis explores the evolution of Chinese travel journalism since 1978, the year China launched its economic reforms and opened to the international community and examines its role in facilitating social changes. Discussion is based on texts from the print, television and online media. Four case studies illustrate how Chinese media are influenced by the state, the market and readerships. The central argument of this thesis is that Chinese travel journalism has established itself as a recognised genre of popular journalism due to rapid growth in tourism along with market-driven reforms. Travel journalism has developed within the official media (the Party press), negotiated media (commercially oriented) and flexible (online) media. These divisions promote a range of information, advice and discussion available to travellers and tourists. In the case of the official media, the information is framed by concerns to regulate; in the case of the negotiated media, there is more scope for commercial promotions; the flexible online media allows non-professional participation. As such, the development of travel journalism reflects the evolution of Chinese media from a propaganda institution to a modernising media industry, and more recently, to a platform for personal expression and alternative voices. The government support for the development of the tourism market has been a strong spur for the growth of travel journalism, and the discourses of Chinese modernisation are carried through the popularisation of travel as a subject in the media. Chinese travel journalism provides advice on social conduct for travellers, both in domestic and international situations, and it influences national self-perceptions and international outlook. Developing in the broader context of social, economic and cultural changes, travel journalism provides a valuable gauge for the study of transformations in Chinese society and Chinese lifestyles.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lidia.pdf: 1072363 bytes, checksum: a5c35875f9e53fbad55a08803ee10872 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-06-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study investigates how media representations of young people and school produce modes of address and interfere in the cultural consumption of broadcast television programs in Brazil aimed at adolescents and how this public, from different classes and social contexts, consumes and resignifies its messages. As theoretical methodological references we adopted the Latin American theory of multiple mediations, the integral audience focus, cultural studies and theories of modes of address and of media representations. We investigate the cultural consumption of the Brazilian televised drama Malhação, by 5th 8th grade adolescents from a public and others from a private school, in the municipality of Florianópolis. The methodology used a questionnaire and collective interviews and supplied data that allow us to conclude that television is still one of the main sources of leisure and information for adolescents of different social classes; television dramas are among the favorite programs for this age group; Malhação produces modes of address focused on the public that it wants to reach and in fact reaches them through a socially compelling media representation of an adolescent model; and that the school is a very important space for sociability and education, above all for youth in the less favored social classes / Nesta pesquisa investigamos como as representações midiáticas de jovem e de escola produzem endereçamentos e interferem no consumo cultural de programas da rede aberta de televisão brasileira, destinados aos adolescentes e como este público, proveniente de diferentes classes e contextos sociais, consome e ressignifica suas mensagens.

Trans Stories, Trans Voices: How the Internet Empowers Transgender Creators to Have Agency in Trans Fiction

Heifner, Pepper J. 01 May 2019 (has links)
Although many advocates believe that the increased representation of transgender people in mainstream fiction will lead to more understanding for the transgender community, many transgender scholars (Page, Richards) are critical of representation that is created without any involvement of actual transgender people. Some fear that the more radical perspectives of trans lives are being erased and replaced with a homogenous idea of the kinds of trans people who are “acceptable” (cárdenas). To avoid this homogeneity, it is important to allow for a multiplicity of trans perspectives and empower transgender people to have agency over their own narratives. The goal of this project is to highlight how trans agency in story telling can benefit trans fiction and take it beyond simply providing a “trans 101” for cisgender audiences. It will also address how the internet has benefitted trans creators by providing a platform for a variety of trans voices to share their stories. By analyzing fiction that centers on transgender experience and is created by transgender people, this thesis will explore the topics and issues addressed in trans stories and the diversity in the perspectives shown. Internet-based fiction such as webcomics and web series will be examined, as well as a trans authored anthology that was funded online. Examining these stories may show us what we are missing by relying on the current homogenous mainstream representation and open our eyes to the importance of empowering transgender people to tell their own diverse, radical stories.

Mýtus národa a autenticita folklóru ve slovenské folklórní talentové TV show Zem spieva (2017) / National Myth and Folklore Authenticity in Slovak Folklore Talent TV Show Zem spieva (2017)

Moravčíková, Dominika January 2019 (has links)
This master's diploma thesis discusses the mechanisms by which the Slovak public television talent show Zem spieva (2017) creates the concept of folklore perfor- mance as a means of building and expressing national identity. This thesis also discusses the mechanisms by which the show creates a platform for negotiating the criteria of high standard folklore performance which should present a consistent reconstruction of tradition. These two effects of the show Zem spieva are in this thesis perceived as conceptually conflicting: on the one hand, there are essentialist ideas about the genetic predisposition of members of the Slovak nation for folklore performance; on the other hand, there are doctrines focused on the reconstruction of the tradition on the folklore stage. These doctrines are followed by an expert jury composed of prominent members of the folklore community. This thesis argues that the concept of performing folklore on stage perceived as an intellectual problem of the reconstruction of tradition is in the show subversive and therefore gradually replaced by emotionally and patriotically defined criteria of high quality folklore performance. This preferred measure preserves cultural cohesion in terms of sa- tisfying the needs of the mass audience. Following the conflict of the mentioned...

Politizace sexuality v Jihoafrické republice / The Politicization of Sexuality in South Africa

Ptáčníková, Iveta January 2018 (has links)
1 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the topic of politicization of sexuality in South Africa in relation to sexual violence against children. Using qualitative content analysis the paper examines, how the "baby rape" phenomenon is described in South African media production and how it relates to the new democracy in the post-apartheid South Africa. Likewise, attention is paid to the issue of virginity testing, which is interpreted as a reaction to the "moral crisis" of the newly formed democratic nation. The examined issue is viewed in the wider context of social relations, therefore using an intersectional approach. The analytical aspect of the analysis includes the categories of race, gender, and sexuality. The intersectional concept analyzes the role of media representation in designing individual social categories and thus strengthening certain forms of oppression. The theoretical background of the work is based on black feminism and the Stanley Cohen's theory of moral panic. With analysing media representation it is examined the way the gender, sexuality, and race are studied and represented in order to answer the thesis question of how Western discourse intersects through these analytical categories. Keywords: media representation, qualitative content analysis, intersectionality, politization of...

Český a slovenský mediální obraz rozdělení Československa / Czech and Slovak media representation of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia

Kvítková, Alena January 2020 (has links)
The master thesis Czech and Slovak media representation of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia is concerned with the way in which media portrayed the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Through the analysis of articles on the topic in question it examines the media image created by each newspaper respectively, by Czech and Slovak newspapers as two units and the overall image based on all of the collected data. Three Czech (Mladá fronta DNES, Rudé právo and Blesk) and three Slovak (Smena, Pravda and Nový Čas) newspapers served as the source for the analysis. Articles from two periods were collected - from the time the act on the dissolution of Czechoslovakia was passed and from the time the actual dissolution took place. The aim is to establish the overall media image of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, but also to compare and contrast the image created by Czech and Slovak newspapers and to study their differences concerning the overall positive, negative or neutral image as well as the implemented media frames. In addition, the thesis also focuses on the different portrayal of the dissolution in right-wing and left-wing newspapers and broadsheet and tabloid press. The final confrontation of the results with public opinion surveys is also important as it proves the connection between the media agenda and...

Břízová, Iva January 2020 (has links)
In her diploma thesis titled "Depiction of the figure of judge in selected Czech media", the author aims to analyse what levels of representation are used to depict the figure of a judge in selected Czech series. The selected five figures of judges are described on the basis of their physical description, roles in society, behaviour and relationships by which their character is co-created. The author focused mainly on stereotypes, which were used to depict the figures. Part of the analysis of the figures of judge is their classification into the category of heroes or villains according to the typology of figures by Brian McNair. Also utilized are the typology of figures by E.M. Forster and Seymour Chatman. The media's depiction of the judges in selected series is positive. At the level of representativeness, it influences the perception of the institution of courts, which are shaped by the depiction of the judicial profession. 1
