Influences of general self-efficacy and weight bias internalization on physical activity in bariatric surgery candidates

Background: Physical activity (PA) seems to be important for long-term weight loss following bariatric surgery, however, studies provide evidence for insufficient PA levels in bariatric patients. Research found self-efficacy to be associated with PA and weight bias internalization, whose influence on mental and physical health has been shown in recent studies. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of general self-efficacy on PA, mediated by weight bias internalization. Setting: Consecutive multicenter registry study conducted in six German bariatric surgery centers. Methods: In N = 179 bariatric surgery candidates, general self-efficacy, weight bias internalization, and different intensities of PA were assessed by self-report questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the assumed mediational relationship. Results: After controlling for sociodemographic variables, weight bias internalization fully mediated the association between general self-efficacy and moderate-intense as well as vigorous-intense PA. Lower general self-efficacy predicted greater weight bias internalization, which in turn predicted lower levels of moderate-intense and vigorous-intense PA. Conclusions: The results suggest an influence of weight bias internalization on preoperative PA in bariatric surgery candidates. Subsequently, implementation of interventions addressing weight bias internalization in the usual treatment of bariatric surgery candidates might enhance patients’ preoperative PA, while longitudinal analyses are needed in order to further examine its predictive value on PA following bariatric surgery.

of the thesis The subject of my thesis is existing shortcomings in regulation of insurance mediation and possible ways of their rectification. Its first introductory chapter explains who insurance intermediaries are and how significant role they play in distribution of insurance products and specifies the scope of the thesis, its aims and methods. The second chapter is devoted to the legal regulation of insurance mediation adopted at the level of European Union and its aspects. It provides a brief description of history of the EU regulation of insurance mediation and more detailed description of its recent state represented by the Insurance Mediation Directive. The third chapter of the thesis deals with the legal regulation of insurance mediation adopted at the Czech national level, which is represented by the Act on insurance intermediaries and independent loss adjusters and respective decree of the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic. In the fourth chapter I summarize the existing shortcomings in legal regulation of insurance mediation both at EU and Czech level which I have identified on basis of legal literature specialized on this topic, comparison of Czech national regulation with its European model as well as my own analysis, and make proposals how to possibly rectify the existing...

On the Possiblity of Mediation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

Almost twenty years after the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and negotiations over mitigation and adaptation strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions began, the negotiations continue to fall short of scientific goals to curb warming. Current UNFCCC procedures do not provide for mediation in the process of negotiations. Public policy mediation has been used often at local, national, and regional levels to resolve environmental disputes. The characteristics of the climate change negotiations suggest that mediation may provide a number of benefits to the negotiations. Scholars and practitioners have developed criteria for determining the suitability of applying mediation to a dispute. The UNFCCC negotiations meet the majority of these criteria. However, the urgency of the issue, its complexity, the number of stakeholders, institutional capacity, and the power parity of the parties suggest mediation may be most beneficial if applied on a small scale at the UNFCCC negotiations. / 10000-01-01

Notre recherche interroge les éventuelles transformations qui modifient la relation pédagogique lorsque des enseignants introduisent dans leur pratique des ressources numériques et interactives. Nous visons à observer les usages réels, plutôt que les usages attendus par les acteurs, qui se développent à la faveur de cette nouvelle instrumentation des pratiques pédagogiques. Pour saisir la complexité des processus à l’œuvre dans les situations pédagogiques, nous avons élaboré un outil d’observation des interactions entre les différents acteurs de la classe et identifier les usages déployés par les apprenants. Il a abouti à une proposition de modélisation de la dynamique des situations d’apprentissages collaboratifs instrumentés. Notre recherche s’appuie sur des observations « longitudinales » menées dans une classe de deux enseignants de collège et de lycée. Elles permettent d’évaluer les changements apportés par l’introduction des supports pédagogiques numériques. L’analyse de notre matériau empirique fait ressortir que, lorsque les ressources pédagogiques sont numériques, la mobilisation des élèves est plus visible. Celle-ci est corrélée à une réorganisation du jeu des acteurs de la classe qui produit des interactions plus riches et une meilleure densité didactique. Cela semble confirmer l’hypothèse des enseignants que les ressources numériques permettent une activité plus attractive. De plus, la production et le partage de nouveaux supports pédagogiques via les réseaux sociaux semblent également participer à l’émergence de collectifs professionnels. L’étude de terrain montre que l’utilisation d’Internet en classe est efficace et permet des apprentissages qui aident l’enseignant à adopter une posture éthique d’autorité relevant d’un génie pédagogique : « une parole authentique lorsqu’il s’adresse à l’autre de la relation », « une parole habitée adressée à un autre au singulier », « une parole adressée, qui cherche à comprendre et non une parole assurée, autorisée par un seul savoir scientifique » (FLICHY,1995 pp. 77, 82). La classe se transforme en un dispositif qui autorise et systématise le travail en autonomie et prépare les esprits aux rencontres hasardeuses. / This research attempts to build an intelligibility of knowledge empowerment in the newconfiguration of a web class. It crosses the web-user’s expecting and what is really “going on” in an approach "applied associationist" at the heart of the class while a pilot-teacher evolved a device to enable it to overcome its own professional dilemmas. It took place during the academic year 2009-2013. The analysis was used to validate the research hypotheses and to identify ways to implement dynamic learning benefits. It retools with 1) a systemic analysis of teaching relationship while it is extended to actors of a new type, the web applies: 2) a systems approach to mental activity of students reveals vicarious interactional phenomena in the teaching / learning, 3) a consideration of field observations and requests for players to change how observation of classroom interactions as the technological tools to optimize the phenomena of self-learning. This study confirms the common assumption that web-classes permit an attractive learning activity. Field study shows that teachers reach with web-classes an ethical stance of authority affilated to pedagocical spirit. Flichy talks about « an authentical speech adress to another person», « words of seeking and not strong and savant words to person » (FLICHY, 1995 pp.77, 82). Classroom turns on a landmark in that self-directed learning is authorized and mind are prepared to led them to the most arbitrary and fortunate of encounters. Social networks on the Internet allow teachers to cooperate and share their own teaching material and pedagogical methods. It should contribute to the emergence of an open design teaching thrown to the wind.

Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo-exploratório, que adotou como estratégia o Estudo de Casos Múltiplos (Yin, 2005). Os participantes foram pessoas encaminhadas pelo Foro de Passo Fundo para atendimento no referido Programa, visando à solução de alguma forma de litígio familiar relacionado à disputa por guarda e/ou regulamentação de visitas de filhos. Foram realizados quatro Estudos de Caso, compostos cada um pelo genitor que buscou o Programa, o outro genitor e o(a)s filho(a)s envolvido(a)s, e que aceitaram participar do estudo. Os dados foram coletados em dois tempos. Na primeira etapa, os casos selecionados foram atendidos pelo Programa de Mediação de Conflitos da IMED. Esse atendimento foi realizado por outra equipe que não aquela que o pesquisador integra. As entrevistas foram gravadas, sob autorização, e posteriormente transcritas. Na segunda etapa, quatro meses depois de encerrado o processo de mediação, e tendo o mesmo sido bem sucedido em termos da obtenção de acordo entre as partes, elas foram novamente entrevistadas com o objetivo de avaliar se o acordo se manteve. Os dados foram analisados de acordo com o método de proposições teóricas de Yin (2005). Os principais resultados apontaram para um desfecho positivo do processo de mediação em termos de acordo entre as partes, restabelecimento do diálogo e da comunicação e que as intervenções focadas no presente e no futuro, e na superação do conflito e não na sua exploração foram as mais benéficas. / The aim of this study was to evaluate the Conflict Mediation Program of IMED, Passo Fundo, analyzing its process, and identifying characteristics and interventions used to promote or not the establishment of agreements. A qualitative study was conducted and the exploratory strategy was adopted. The procedure of Multiple Case Studies was used (Yin, 2005). Participants were addressed by the Forum of Passo Fundo for attendance in that program, aimed at solving some form of litigation related to family disputes over custody and / or regulation of visits. There were four case studies, each one composed by the parents and the children involved, and who agreed to participate. Data were collected at different times. In the first stage, the selected cases were assisted by the Program for Conflict Resolution of IMED. This service was conducted by another team than the one that integrates the researcher. The interviews were recorded, with permission, and transcribed. In the second stage, four months after the end of the mediation process, when it was successful in terms of getting agreement between the participants, they were interviewed again in order to assess whether the agreement was kept. The data were analyzed according to the method of theoretical propositions by Yin (2005). The main findings pointed to a positive outcome of the mediation process in terms of the agreement between the participants, recovery of dialogue and communication. Interventions focused on the present and future, and in overcoming the conflict were most successful.

It is considered that in this scenario the culture system composed by the media is reframed by the gastronomy culture system and vice versa, creating a new meaning web for both. Both the gastronomy and the cuisine form languages of qualified meaning spaces - so spatialities - which are important to a contemporary media analysis. In the last 10 years, it is possible to notice in mass media communication the intense use of cuisine and especially gastronomy themes in magazines, newspapers, television shows and internet sites, making such a system to be processed as a media capable of shaping social, economic and cultural preferences, tastes and palates. This research concerns on how media - both print (newspapers and magazines), television and digital ones - build these media environments and how such communication strategy affects the symbolic relationship between the people and the food. The theoretical framework was constituted primarily by Semiotics of Culture of Yuri Lotman, and the work of Lucrécia Ferrara and Muniz Sodré. Throughout the analysis of the research corpus, which is consisted of language construction and communication strategies examples towards cuisine and gastronomy in the media, the research was conducted in order to consolidate the main hypothesis: we believe that nowadays gastronomy has become an independent media, such is the communication and cultural relevance of its performance / Esta pesquisa intitulada Gastronomia, Culinária e Mídia estudo dos ambientes midiáticos e das linguagens da comida e da cozinha , sob a orientação da Profª Drª Lucrécia D Alessio Ferrara, investiga a construção das linguagens da gastronomia e da culinária nos ambientes midiáticos da comida e da cozinha, e sua importância no universo midiático contemporâneo. Considera-se nesse cenário que o sistema da cultura constituído pela mídia é ressignificado pelo sistema da cultura da gastronomia e vice-versa, construindo uma nova teia de significados para ambos. Tanto a gastronomia como a culinária constituem linguagens dos espaços qualificados, portanto de espacialidades, importantes para a análise da mídia contemporânea. Na comunicação dos meios de massa pode-se observar, nos últimos 10 anos, a exacerbação do uso da culinária e, especialmente, da gastronomia como temática de revistas, jornais, programas de televisão e sites de internet, fazendo tal sistema cultural se processar como mídia modeladora de preferências, gostos e paladares sociais, econômicos e culturais. A esta pesquisa interessa a investigação de como a mídia, tanto a impressa, em jornais e revistas, quanto as televisiva e digital constroem esses ambientes midiáticos e como tal estratégia comunicativa está afetando a relação simbólica das pessoas com o alimento. La thèse sur la médiation et l’entreprise au Liban traite un sujet qui n’avait pas encore fait l’objet d’une étude systématique. La thèse a un double but : mettre en lumière la médiation grâce à une clarification de la notion de médiation et de son potentiel au Liban, et mettre en évidence son utilité pour l’entreprise. La problématique « La médiation : outil de gestion au service de l’entreprise et ses spécificités au Liban » m’intéressait, du fait de mon enthousiasme pour la médiation et de mon expérience professionnelle acquise au cours de plus de vingt-cinq ans de travail dans les ressources humaines, années durant lesquelles j’ai beaucoup tenu le rôle de médiateur informel sans en être consciente ni techniquement formée. Du fait aussi que ce domaine au Liban étant à ses débuts, il fallait découvrir les opinions et les points de vue des juges, médiateurs, ainsi que celles et ceux des professionnels d’autres sociétés sur le concept de la médiation. La médiation n’a pas seulement pour but de résoudre les conflits individuels ou collectifs du travail, elle agit aussi directement sur les relations de travail afin de les équilibrer. C’est un mécanisme de régulation des relations de travail. Je souhaite que ma recherche puisse fournir des explications et éclaircissements sur l’intérêt de la médiation en tant qu’outil de gestion au sein de l’Entreprise au Liban, et permette que les sociétés aient le moins possible recours aux tribunaux et services de contentieux lors de différends à résoudre et sachent favoriser le lien social pour un fonctionnement optimum. / The thesis on mediation and the enterprise in Lebanon analyzes a topic that has neverhas never been the subject of a systematic study to date. The objective of this thesis is to clarify and highlight the potential benefits of mediation in Lebanon and to demonstrate its usefulness to the business enterprise. The question, “is mediation a management tool at the service of an enterprise and its particularities in Lebanon” has always fascinated me by virtue of my enthusiasm for the topic derived primarily from my professional experience acquired over twenty five years of working in human resources. During that period, I often had to play the informal role of a mediator without actually having been conscious of that fact or having actually acquired the professional training to do so. Also, since this subject is in its infancy in Lebanon, it was necessary to solicit the opinions and the perspectives of judges, mediators, as well as professionals from other companies on the concept of mediation. The purpose of mediation is not only to solve individual and group conflicts at the workplace, but to also help shape employer-employee labor relations. I hope that my research can provide insight on the benefits of mediation as a management tool in the service of the Company in Lebanon, one that helps minimize the reliance of these companies on litigation to help resolve their labor differences and enhance the relationship among the employees for the optimal productivity.

This essay examines the differences between the mediation practices concering youth crime in the swedish cities of Kalmar and Växjö. The analysis are made with the use of quality interviews which we have linked together with the three theories of Social Control Theory, Restorative Justice and Transformative Mediation. There after we have compared the results with one and another. Results show that there both similarities and differences, both in the theoretical aspects and in the organisations, for example the coopiration with the prosecutors and the police.
