Gessinger, Rafael Koerig January 2016 (has links)
The thesis analyses the notions of acquired and infused virtue in the work of Thomas Aquinas in order to present an integracionist reading of his ethics, by which concepts like virtue, law and grace are treated as parts of a harmonic set, having reciprocal relations among each other. The idea of virtues acquired by human acts becomes intelligible in the light of the concept of synderesis and the first principles of natural law. Infused virtues are understood as effects from grace and divine law. The concept of hability (habitus) is analysed as the gender of all virtue and helps to resolve objections raised against both kinds of virtue. It proves that the causation of virtues, acquired and infused, follows a simetrical sctructure in which God works as the remote efficient cause, by means of the external principles of law and grace. However, the external provenance of these principles does not jeopardise the virtue’s character as an interior perfection, in both cases of acquired and infused virtue, thanks to the concept of hability. The integracionist reading ends with the subordination of the acquired virtues that aims to an imperfect happiness to the infused virtues that have perfect happiness as their proper object and goal.

As obras inglesas de John Wycliffe inseridas no contexto religioso de sua época: da suma teológica de Aquino ao concílio de Constança , dos espirituais fransciscanos a Guilherme de Ockham / The english works of John Wycliffe inserted in the religious context of his time: from Aquinas summa theologica to the council of Constance, from the spiritual franciscans to Guilherme of Ockham

Leandro Villela de Azevedo 04 February 2011 (has links)
The Late Middle Ages, specially the period between 1305 and 1418 is indispensable to understand the political an religious though not only of the medieval people, but for the comprehension of the modern ages. In this small period of time much religious turbulence took place in Western Europe. The capital of the Catholic Church moved to Avignon and then returned to Roma, the Church slipt in two different factions in the Great Western Schism and each group was leaded by a different pope, both of them considering themselves as the sumo pontifce and the only true connection between God and men in earth. The Schism lasts for decades and each pope define the other as the antichrist. In this period the heretical though grown up and the attempts of reconciliations of the groups not always become effective, in matter of fact once even a pope renounced his post. John Wycliffe, professor of Theology in Oxford University, lived in this time. He produced a great number of papers in Latin and a even more great number of papers in middle English. His ideas continued with his followers the Lollards. This great thinker created important dialogues with the other heretical thinkers, being one of the most important pre-reformist theologian and creating the bases of the protestant reform. But the also created the idea that the true Christian church would never be institutionalized neither it could be powerful. In his sermon The Wicket, using humanistic reason, he united the words of Jesus in the Gospels to prove that would be impossible to create a strong institutionalized church. So, this particular paper was also put aside because it was not interesting for the newly created institutionalized church of the 16th century Studding this thinker and his works, specially the Wicket is very important to better understand not only the medieval church, but the institutionalized church of all times.

Filosofické aspekty nauky o Trojici v Teologické sumě Tomáše Akvinského / Philosophical Aspects of Aquinas's Doctrine on the Trinity in STH. (q. 27.-43.)

Mišejka, Pavol January 2019 (has links)
Philosophical Aspects of Aquinas's Doctrine on the Trinity in Summa Theologiae. The work has the goal to disclose a philosophical background of Aquinas's doctrine on the Trinity in Summa theologiae. The Dogma of the Trinity of Divine Persons is one of the fundamental truths of faith. This fact transcends human reason, yet it is a topic with its position and content, so it was always exciting and theologians tried to cope with this paradoxical claim of a single God in the Three Persons. St. Thomas Aquinas was no exception in this. His scholastic approach uses abundant philosophical material to help him to disclose this reality which exceeds philosophical science as incontrovertible and therefore credible. In his famous work for beginner theologians, he systematically presents his solution based on the analysis of the category of relation. The distinction between being (esse) of relation and its own nature (ratio) will make it possible to distinguish the three Persons in God's only reality. He concludes that divine persons themselves are the relations they represent and that the relations are subsistent. Ultimately, such an understanding of the existence of divine Persons reveals the reason for creation and helps us to understand our salvation, which is according to the Angelic Doctor the ultimate...

Rebbache, Meriem 08 1900 (has links)
Ibn Rushd, better known under his latinized name, Averroes, embodies the spirit of the rational thinking in medieval and contemporary Islam. Indeed, the work of him who wanted to eradicate, eight centuries ago, religious dogmatism and fanatism by defending an enlightened Islam, requiring, in doing so, to welcome philosophical practice with open arms, certainly did not lost its relevance. The present work thus proposes to take an interest in this important attempt to a religious reform, defended by Averroes, by studying, in detail, the articulation between philosophy and religion which particularly characterizes his political though. Averroes was a Muslim philosopher who developed his approach in a very specific political-religious context whose foundations will then be developed in the first part of this work in order to understand the necessary basis to undertake our research, while recognizing its modern character. The second part of this work will consist in exposing the way Averroes legitimizes the obligation of the philosophical practice, in virtue of the Revelation, for those who are capable of it. The third and last part will finally present the practical repercussions of the interdependence between religion and philosophy, precisely with regards to the establishment of a just City in the land of Islam. A critical look will then be taken on the thoughts of Averroes from which will emerge several reflections whose relevance has persisted throughout the centuries.

Larocque, Alexandra 09 1900 (has links)
Mots-clés : Guillaume d’Ockham, philosophie médiévale, Moyen-Âge, universaux, Jean Duns Scot, scolastique, ontologie, théologie catholique, logique, sémantique / This thesis proposes a critical study of chapters 14 to 17 of the first part of William of Ockham’s Summa logicae, a philosopher and theologian of the late Middle Ages (c. 1285-1347). These four chapters present Ockham's position in the problem of universals, a marked intellectual debate that opposed several philosophical and theological schools of the medieval academic world. For his part, Ockham defends a nominalist position according to which 1. everything that exists is inherently singular; and 2. universals, those concepts only accessible to the mind, do not exist. Opposing realism, Ockham addresses one of his Franciscan colleagues in particular, John Duns Scotus (c. 1266-1308). This thesis’s first aim is to identify the merits of a nominalist position vis-à-vis realism in regard to the status of universals, and second, to mark the tensions internal to Ockham’s nominalistic approach in its conciliation with ontology and catholic theology. It will thus be shown that antirealism succeeds in defeating realism from a logical perspective, but that some problems remain when we analyse it from an ontological or theological perspective. Keywords: William of Ockham, medieval philosophy, Middle Ages, universals, John Duns Scotus, scholastic, ontology, catholic theology, logic, semantics.

Libersan, Olivier 08 1900 (has links)
Part of the septenary of cardinal sins, sloth stands out as an anomaly; contrarily to other sins, sloth does not reside in the desire for or the perpetration of a reprehensible act. It is instead portrayed as inaction, immobility, lack of desire. Marked by its 4th century origins, the concept of sloth is then understood as acedia, a lack of care or an absence of interest for the divine good and the moral acts it commands so strong it may veer into sadness. Acedia constitutes an important obstacle to the moral life of the agent because it embodies the problem of a disgust for the notion of good itself. This memoir proposes to investigate the psychological and affective mechanisms standing behind this disinterest by scrutinizing the theorical reflections of the first thinker to produce a methodical analysis on deadly sins, Evagrius Ponticus, and those of the philosopher who seems to solve the tension that dwells in between the desire and the aversion for good, Thomas of Aquinas. The present inquiry on acedia will thus lend itself to a study of the enigmatic beginnings of a theorization of cardinal sins deeply embedded in the intellectualism of the ascetical and monastic universe that saw its birth, will detail the transformations acedia endured to survive to the 13th century and will attempt to grasp the subtleties of Aquinas’ answer to the problem of an undesirable good.

Schrift- und Schreibmystik : Christina von Hane

Kirakosian, Racha January 2014 (has links)
The subject of my thesis is a little-studied hagiographical work that gives important insights into rewriting processes and their significance in medieval textual culture. The anonymous Life of Christina of Hane, a thirteenth-century Premonstratensian nun from the Palatinate, is an example of bridal mysticism which combines the medieval tradition of the reception of the Song of Songs with hagiographic elements. A codicological and palaeographical analysis of the only manuscript shows it to be a sixteenth-century copy, but the type of mysticism and the theological questions that it discusses suggest that the text was initially composed in the thirteenth century, when Christina is thought to have lived. The theological and spiritual ideas in the text belong to the wider context of communicating the transcendental within the world. My thesis uses performative language analysis to address the problems of textuality and authorization in the Life of Christina of Hane. It yields new insights into the ways in which this mystical text makes use of hagiographic strategies, how gender and vernacular theology are linked, how liturgical elements support the text’s pragmatic nature, and how somatic spirituality is reflected on an allegorical level in the embodiment of God’s bride. An assessment of three communicative aspects – medial, narrative, and allegorical – highlights the textualization of the mystical experience. The appellative structure of Christina’s text invites the reader to engage with the text. This study provides the first comprehensive interpretation of the text on Christina of Hane. It compares it to other mystical texts, to a German–Latin prayerbook, and to a fragmentary legend about Mary Magdalene. It challenges existing judgments about Christina’s biography and offers alternative solutions founded in the latest scholarship on female mystical literature.

A mediaeval court physician at work : Ibn Jumay''s commentary on the Canon of Medicine

Nicolae, Daniel Sebastian January 2012 (has links)
Ibn Jumay''s (d. c. 594/1198) commentary on the Canon of Medicine by Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) occupies an important place in the history of medicine for it is the first Canon commentary written by a physician and thus stands at the start of a tradition extending over 500 years. In addition, it is a so-far neglected source for our understanding of mediaeval Islamic medicine. The present thesis analyses the commentary with the aims of (1) determining the methods by which the court physician composed his treatise and (2) understanding why Ibn Jumay' undertook to prepare a commentary on one of the most thorough medical compendia of the middle ages. Chapter One presents the biography of Ibn Jumay', reveals that his religion had little impact on his writings and surveys his library which played a pivotal role in the composition of the commentary. Chapter Two investigates Ibn Jumay''s methodology in the entire commentary; it reveals that with his philological and source-critical methods Ibn Jumay' wanted to establish an authoritative reading of the Canon and to demonstrate the high degree of his erudition. Chapter Three focuses on selected passages in the commentary in form of three case studies. Ibn Jumay''s comments on anatomy/dissection, assorted materia medica and headaches demonstrate the court physician’s reverence for ancient authorities and his quest to revive and refine their teachings. Chapter Four contextualises Ibn Jumay''s methods and agenda by comparing them to those of other relevant scholars of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The thesis concludes by arguing that Ibn Jumay''s commentary was part of his revival of the art of medicine and his attempt to gain power in the medical tradition by attaching his name to one of the greatest scholars of his time — the ra'īs Ibn Sīnā.
