Bookmarks : in the footprints of Edward Thomas

Riding, James Frank January 2012 (has links)
This thesis muddies the idea of singular being, tracing the footprints of nature writer and poet Edward Thomas, from the beginning of his epically creative final four years, to the site where he died in 1917, during the Battle of Arras. It is presented as a series of engagements with landscape, writing, and poetry; affective mapping, chasing memory-prompts, bookmarks and the shock of the poetic. The journeys seek to return to an ‘open’ idea of the geographical imagination, negating a negative, reductionist form of geography; shifting the focus away from sociologically determined notions of mobility. A resident of England for all his life, but with Welsh heritage, Edward Thomas believed he belonged nowhere. His texts: little time capsules, admixtures of social commentary, environmental action, and personal musings, are archaeological exercises, presenting a complicated picture of loss, demonstrating the value of artistic imagination. Loss - and subsequent estrangement from the world - would become his poetic source. This thesis is about trying to understand the relationship between poetry - indeed all ‘land writing’ - and place. How it affects in-place, what it does in-place? To understand this relationship properly it was necessary to consider why, as humans, we write? To find out what the subjective condition of the poet, or writer, emerges out of - in order to relay the experience of meeting poetry in-place. Edward Thomas began as a nature writer and became a poet after much agonizing. This made him a useful subject (object) (neither). Furthermore he suffered a long period of introspection and had a knowledge of Freud and psychoanalysis - which he underwent in 1912. This was played out in what Edna Longley (2008) terms; ‘poetic psychodrama.’ His poems often feature a split self or switch between patient and analyst (Longley, 2008). The Other Man, is his doppelganger, who he plays himself off against: the poems are, as such, multi-voiced, counterpointed, intersubjective. Deleuze and Guattari wrote in A Thousand Plateaus (1988: 3): ‘since each of us was already several, there was already quite a crowd.’ Edward Thomas knew this all too well. From the beginning of this ambulatory homage my psyche became inextricably linked with his.

No. of bitstreams: 1 LUANA CARLA DE SOUZA SILVA.pdf: 4599901 bytes, checksum: f2aa8775a811e190de389cca06fb9dc4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-04-25 / The work proposes to raise the history of the foundational center of Porangatu, understood here as a place of memory. It is understood as place that has acquired meaning over time. It is over time that the place becomes meaningful to the individuals or groups that live there. It is the lived experiences there that build their history, their past, their memory. Value is attributed to place because of its intimacy with it, because even simple and routine events over time have a profound meaning, creating in the individual or group a great affection for the place where they occurred. Memory is rooted in different contexts of our life experience: local customs, celebrations, family and social relationships. In Porangatu, these moments happen at parties, especially religious. These are moments that bring together the entire urban community and the inhabitants of the farms. The festivities became moments of fraternization and encounter, besides a manifestation of faith. Another important festival for the porangatuenses is the Arraiá do Descoberto, which has become a landmark for the city, a moment of entertainment, meeting and fun for decades, although it is not a religious manifestation. The foundational center of Porangatu is a historical place that, for many of its residents, deserves to be preserved. Its history is described in its landscape, in its streets, in the colonial features of the houses and buildings that still remain. The mining period in Goiás was of discoveries and transformations for its immense territory, crossed by the diverse exploratory, military and scientific expeditions. Situated in an important territory of the captaincy, the Sertão de Amaro Leite, appears among the many arraiais, Descoberto da Piedade. Among the many settlements that were extinguished with the disappearance of gold, the Arraial do Descoberto remained and developed yourself until it became an important part of the city of Porangatu. Its historic center still retains the marks of its beginnings, the history of its formation. But today the transformations in which it has passed gone it has caused its decharacterization.

Poválečný vývoj Lidic - pietní vzpomínky a život v nových Lidicích / Post-war course of Lidice - reverent memories and life in new Lidice

Havlůjová, Gabriela January 2012 (has links)
The author deals with some specific problems of the post-war development of Lidice between 1945 and 1989. The diplomante ponders upon the questions of memory on Lidice, Lidice memory and Lidice as a place of memoir. In her introduction, based on numerous talks with the Lidice narrators, the author tries to find out what kind of memory place Lidice is and who it may concern. The follow-up chapters reflect the worldwide reception of Lidice tragedy; moreover, they feature some talks with the women named Lidice after the village. Next thematic part is focused on the actual construction of the village as well as on two organizations that were in charge of the whole building process: Society for Lidice Reconstruction on one hand and British movement "Lidice Shall Live" on the other hand. Author also introduces the movement founder Barnett Stross. Further chapters describe a typical course of that time reverent memories in Lidice using some articles from Rude Pravo and showing the way how Lidice was misused by the communist regime to serve as a propaganda of socialism. The memories of the narrators, acquired and processed through an oral history method, the archive sources of both the State District Archive in Kladno and the National Archive in London in particular, became a source base of the author. Bayesian mechanisms in spatial cognition : towards real-world capable computational cognitive models of spatial memory

Madl, Tamas January 2016 (has links)
Existing computational cognitive models of spatial memory often neglect difficulties posed by the real world, such as sensory noise, uncertainty, and high spatial complexity. On the other hand, robotics is unconcerned with understanding biological cognition. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach towards developing cognitively plausible spatial memory models able to function in realistic environments, despite sensory noise and spatial complexity. We hypothesized that Bayesian localization and error correction accounts for how brains might maintain accurate location estimates, despite sensory errors. We argued that these mechanisms are psychologically plausible (producing human-like behaviour) as well as neurally plausible (implementable in brains). To support our hypotheses, we reported modelling results of neural recordings from rats (acquired outside this PhD), constituting the first evidence for Bayesian inference in neurons representing spatial location, as well as modelling human behaviour data. In addition to dealing with uncertainty, spatial representations have to be stored and used efficiently in realistic environments, by using structured representations such as hierarchies (which facilitate efficient retrieval and route planning). Evidence suggests that human spatial memories are structured hierarchically, but the process responsible for these structures has not been known. We investigated features influencing them using data from experiments in real-world and virtual reality environments, and proposed a computational model able to predict them in advance (based on clustering in psychological space). We have extended a general cognitive architecture, LIDA (Learning Intelligent Distribution Agent), by these probabilistic models of how brains might estimate, correct, and structure representations of spatial locations. We demonstrated the ability of the resulting model to deal with the challenges of realistic environments by running it in high-fidelity robotic simulations, modelled after participants' actual cities. Our results show that the model can deal with noise, uncertainty and complexity, and that it can reproduce the spatial accuracies of human participants.

Lugares de memória da ditadura militar em São Paulo e as homenagens ao operário Santo Dias da Silva / Military dictatorship memory places in São Paulo and tributes to the worker Santo Dias da Silva

Antonini, Anaclara Volpi 09 December 2016 (has links)
The aim of this research is to analyze the purpose of memory places related to repression and resistance to military dictatorship in São Paulo and the mobilizations to identify, preserve, and/or memorialize in a context marked by intense space transformations and at the same time, deficient public preservation and affirmation politics about memory related to violations happened at that time. We articulated Pierre Nora´s concept with contributions of the geographic category of place to understand this points that contradictorily condense, not only the memory of violations and repression, but also the ones related to resistance to dictatorship, being formed as reference frames of this recent past, at risk in the metropolis. We mapped the places listed by Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo in the metropolitan area of this city and analyzed the interventions and experiences that oppose to this abolition process through memorialization initiatives at this places. The each year´s tributes to the worker Santo Dias da Silva in the place where he was assassinated allows us to go deeper in the debate about the topic researched, treating the experiences harnessed to his memory as links to think about memorialization initiatives from production of urban space theory and also as place, and memory place.

Along of yours three chapters, the author tries to answer some questions as: what were the elements which constituted the Communist Party s memory, in the period from 1922 to 1956? At which moment did this memory pass to be fiercely contested? Who and which documents reveal this? How did it happen the dispute by this memory? The approach to topic consider which the production of memory by Communist Party and the dispute for your possession by communists of PCB and of PCdoB happened in scope of national reality and of party, spaces notions understand from concept of memory developed for authors as Halbwachs, Le Goff, Pollack and Pierre Nora. To explain the objectives of historical research it has used as methodology the exam and the interpretation of documentary and bibliographical sources, with priority for the party s documents then it was depicted a collective interpretation about the events considered more importants. The sites of Partido Comunista do Brasil (www.pcdob.org.br or vermelho.org.br) and of Partido Popular Socialista (www.pps.org.br) also went consulted / Este trabalho estuda a disputa pela mem?ria do Partido Comunista no Brasil durante e depois da cis?o que resultou no aparecimento de duas agremia??es intituladas comunistas, no cen?rio pol?tico brasileiro, no final da d?cada de 1950 e in?cio dos anos de 1960: o Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB) e Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB). Lugar de la memoria en Ayacucho / Place of memory in Ayacucho

Eslava Granthon, Matthias Estanislao 04 April 2021 (has links)
Located in La Hoyada, in the new district Andrés Avelino Cáceres in Huamanga, Ayacucho; 20 minutes from the center of Huamanga with posible entries through the avenues Los Robles and Cementerio. The exhumations continue to be carried out. This project consists in the creation of a place of memory (museum) where the user can be transferred in time so that he can experience the feelings of anguish, pain and suffering that the terrorism caused in the affected people, relatives and victims in the period from 1980 to 2000 using the theory of phenomenology where the walkthrough manages to go through these 20 years of history and its background. In turn, achieving a place where the memory of the kidnapped, detained and disappeared victims is dignified, honored and remembered by current and future generations, as well as seeking reconciliation and peace with the past between the affected families and the Peruvian state. / Tesis
