Many large scale studies have identified habitat modification or habitat losses as primary threats for the conservation of freshwater fish communities. In Canada, No Net Loss (NNL) of the productive capacity of habitats is the guiding principle of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ policy for the management of fish habitat. To respect NNL, a better understanding of fish-habitat relationships is required, as well as tools to quantify the impact of habitat modifications on fish. Fish habitat use models (FHUM) are tools that can improve our understanding of fish-habitat relationships, predict species occurrences, densities or biomass on the basis of habitat descriptors and quantify habitat requirements. They consist in relationships between biological descriptors of fish and habitat descriptors.
The general objective of my thesis is to improve the performance of FHUM for the lower Laurentian streams by suggesting refinements on 2 crucial aspects in the development of these models: a precise description of the fish community and the use of efficient statistical models.
In the first chapter, I evaluate the relative performance of electrofishing and visual surveys (snorkeling) for estimating the abundance of combinations of fish species and size classes in rivers. I also assessed the effect of environmental conditions on potential differences between the results obtained using these two sampling methods. Sampling sites consisted in 10 river sections of 20 m in length distributed in the Laurentian region of Québec. Both methods were used while sections were blocked. Three snorkelers that swam the river sections upstream while identifying and counting fish of each species and size-classes performed visual surveys. Three-pass electrofishing was performed and abundances were estimated with a maximum likelihood depletion model. Greater abundances of fish were observed by snorkeling than by electrofishing at all sites. Snorkeling species richness was higher (6/10) or equal (4/10) to electrofishing richness. Differences in the fish communities observed by both sampling methods were not related to environmental conditions. The results of our work are therefore contrary to that of most published studies that suggested the superiority of electrofishing on visual surveys. Compared to the conditions found in previous studies, our sampling sites had different environmental characteristics (no fallen trees, insignificant cover of large cobble and boulder) but the most striking dissimilarity was in terms of fish communities (dominance of cyprinids and centrarchids instead of salmonids). Behavioural characteristics favouring capture avoidance (schooling) and facilitating underwater observation (curiosity) may be responsible for the superiority of visual surveys in our study rivers. Survey methods should be selected based on fish community composition.
In the second chapter, I develop FHUM for complex stream fish communities. In order to simplify the modelling of such communities, as well as improve our understanding of fish – habitat relationships, I used the ecological guild concept and the niche filtering hypothesis to explore the relationships between guilds based on different types of traits (eco-morphological, reproductive, alimentary and taxonomic) and local environmental descriptors, at the coarse meso-habitat scale. Reproductive guilds led to FHUM that clearly outperformed the other 3 approaches, because of the close relationship between preferred spawning grounds and non spawning habitat preferences, and also because reproductive traits are linked to habitat characteristics at the reach or coarse mesohabitat scale. We also defined guilds based on habitat-use and related them to species traits. Traits related to the feeding biology of fishes seemed to be the best at explaining the habitat-use guilds, but our model did not correctly represent the among-guild relationships. Validation of our reproductive trait model on an independent dataset would confirm our finding, which represents a promising way of modelling fish - habitat relationships in complex fish communities.
In conclusion, my thesis suggests important improvements to FHUM models in the Laurentian streams by giving new insights on the choice of a sampling method that take into account the biological characteristics of the streams targeted, and by using a promising way of simplifying FHUM for species rich communities: reproductive guilds.

Design, Development, And Integration Of A Meso-scale Eletrostatic Phase Shifter On Microwave LaminateLata, Poonam 03 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Recent developments in the area of microfabrication technologies, has enabled the fabrication of many radio frequency/microwave components with better performance and lower cost than possible with semiconductor based fabrication technology. Many of these microfabricated RF components such as switches and phase shifters, popularly known as RF MEMS, are aimed at reducing the insertion loss and improving other performance parameters such as linearity. For these devices size miniaturization is not necessarily important, as in practical subsystems, these components are integrated with RF front-ends on a laminate. This thesis deals with concepts of a low cost passive phase shifter fabricated in-situ on a microwave laminate. The operation of this Mesoscale Electrostatically actuated Phase shifter on microwave Laminate (MEPL) is similar to that of a micromachined distributed MEMS transmission line (DMTL) phase shifter.
In spite of advantages of low losses, wide bandwidth, low DC power consumption and high linearity over semiconductor/MMIC technology, microfabricated phase shifters are often not used in field because of issues related to fabrication reliability, packaging and integration. On the other hand, the proposed MEPL will have all the advantages of conventional MEMS phase shifters with additional benefit of lower cost. Furthermore, these are integrable to form a monolithic phased array.
A MEPL phase shifter of 50-bridges periodically distributed on the co-planar waveguide (CPW) transmission line is demonstrated in this thesis. MEMS air bridges are electrostatically actuated to vary the capacitance of the transmission line, which changes the phase velocity of the propagation RF signal, consequently phase at the output port. The realized MEPL is characterized for electromagnetic as well as electromechanical performance. The electromechanical characterization of this device is performed using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV). The measured data showed good agreement with the analytical data..
Major application of a phase shifter is in a phased array antenna system. MEPL is particularly suited for a monolithic phase array antenna. The proposed monolithic phased array antenna system fabrication approach utilizes extremely simple and economical modern printed circuit board technology to pattern the conventional microwave laminate and copper foil. A complete monolithic phased array antenna system is fabricated on a microwave laminate using an embedded phase shifter operating with electrostatic principles. Other components such as DC block and bias tee are integrated into the CPW-microstrip transitions to optimize the space and performance. Integrated phased array antenna is fabricated and tested to demonstrate the beam steering capability. Measured S11 is better than -15dB at the operating frequency of 9.8GHz. The beam steering capability is shown as proof of concept by showing the beam scan angle of 10deg with bias voltage of 125V.
The mesoscale phase shifter demonstrated in this thesis has several advantages compared to micromachined phase shifters. The proposed fabrication approach does not use metal deposition/patterning process, which removes the need of high cost clean room and sophisticated films deposition equipments. Secondly, as there are no thin films used, stiction is not expected on phase shifters fabricated with this approach. Since this approach uses thicker metal films, the power handling capability is expected to be significantly higher than micromachined phase shifters. Since conventional phased array antenna system components are fabricated on a microwave laminate, micro machined phase shifters realized on semiconductor substrates are required to be packaged separately before integrating with such phased array circuits. Packaging of the micro-machined RF-MEMS/MEMS devices is still a major issue and contributes to a substantial part of the total cost. Unlike micromachined phase shifters which are required to be packaged and then embedded in phased array applications, device presented in this thesis is packaged in-situ. Compared to similar monolithic phased array antenna reported on silicon substrate which are limited by wafer size, these arrays can be easily extended for larger arrays on microwave laminate as these are available in large size.
To summarize, the proposed fabrication approach for phase shifters overcomes many limitations of micromachined components for microwave applications while retaining most of their advantages compared to other existing approaches based on ferrites or semiconductor technologies.

L'expérience d'achat de produits monastiques : l'influence des contextes sur le contenu de l'expérience vécue / The experience of purchasing monastic products : the influence of the contexts on the content of the expériencePaquier, Marie-Catherine 30 June 2015 (has links)
The act of purchasing a monastic product is a situation when two apparently contradictory worlds come together: the monastic world, silent and detached from material goods, and the secular world of consumption, noisy and materialistic. Our research is highly contextualised and looks at consumption from a cultural perspective. The aim of this research is to understand in which way contexts influence the content of the experience when buying monastic food products and cosmetics. Our empirical research is qualitative, ethnographic in nature, and is carried out inside the world of the French monastic economy. We ask purchasers about the meaning they give to their experience of buying monastic products from abbey shops, from an abbeys' virtual marketplace, and from a secular branded outlet. The first-level results bring a contextualised understanding of the monastic ecosystem, and of the dimensions of the buying experience at the three types of shops. They particularly highlight the close links between purchasing, giving, enjoyment and sharing, and also the patrimonial aspect of these products. The second-level results are less contextualised and support the theory according to which the physical point of sale is the instrument through which the meaning of the external contexts is transferred into the heart of the experience. We are thus able to highlight the limitations of e-commerce for products that are deeply anchored in history and territory, and we advise decision-makers on how best to adapt their strategies for online channels.

KONCEPT A METODY ODHADU NAIRU A HOSPODÁŘSKÉHO CYKLU NA TRHU PRÁCE V ZEMÍCH VISEGRÁDSKÉ SKUPINY / A CONCEPT AND METHODS OF ESTIMATION OF THE NAIRU AND THE BUSINESS CYCLE AT THE LABOR MARKET IN THE VISEGRAD COUNTRIESJašová, Emilie January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation describes the relationship between inflation and unemployment with the concept of the natural rate of unemployment at which inflation remains unchanged. By comparing NAIRU, as defined in this manner, with the actual unemployment rate, we obtain the gap in unemployment. In connection with the analysed substitution between inflation and unemployment, there can be found a decrease in the importance of the PC in the 1970s, a very popular New Keynesian PC in the 1990s, and doubts over the robustness of the estimates. On the other hand, the concept of the PC and the NAIRU had previously been developed in accordance with the real data. There is a broad consensus on the impact of monetary policy on nominal variables (inflation) and real variables (unemployment). Methods are also being combined and continuously improved This dissertation is seeking to prove or disprove the hypothesis of the NAIRU concept's usability in estimating the economic cycle on the labor market. This hypothesis has helped in the acceptance of: the support for the concept and estimating PC and NAIRU in the literature; the application of measures to refine the estimate of the NAIRU and PC in the empirical analysis of the dissertation; the dissertation conclusion's compliance with the latest international research, with the local authors and with the own research. The contribution of the dissertation can be identified thusly: distribution methods depend upon the different time periods, their treatment and the best methods for the conditions of the countries in the Visegrad Group; the specification of an unstable environment and its impact upon the estimation of the NAIRU and the economic cycle; the calculation of the unemployment rate of the sectors, age categories and their use in estimating the NAIRU and cycle on the meso-level; to determine the effect of different pricing structure indicators in order to estimate the NAIRU and the economic cycle on the labor market and the topicality of their estimates.

Pravděpodobnostní diskrétní model porušování betonu / Probabilistic discrete model of concrete fracturingKaděrová, Jana January 2018 (has links)
The thesis presents results of a numerical study on the performance of 3D discrete meso–scale lattice–particle model of concrete. The existing model was extended by introducing the spatial variability of chosen material parameter in form of random field. An experimental data from bending tests on notched and unnotched beams was exploited for the identification of model parameters as well as for the subsequent validation of its performance. With the basic and the extended randomized version of the model, numerical simulations were calculated so that the influence of the rate of fluctuation of the random field (governed by the correlation length) could be observed. The final part of the thesis describes the region in the beam active during the test in which the most of the fracture energy is released in terms of its size and shape. This region defines the strength of the whole member and as shown in the thesis, it does not have a constant size but it is influenced by the geometrical setup and the correlation length of the random field.

Bovint serum albumin påverkar överlevnad och Aβ-nivåer i Alzheimers sjuka Drosophila flugor. : Bovine serum albumin affects survival and Aβ-levels in Alzheimer's diseased Drosophila flies.Tani, Milena January 2024 (has links)
Alzheimer's disease (AD) was first described more than 100 years ago and is today the most common cause of dementia. It is one of the progressive neurodegenerative diseases that affect 47 million people around the world between the ages of 60 and 90. One of the contributing factors to AD is extracellular amyloid – β (Aβ) plaques that form as a result of protein aggregation. These Aβ proteins are neurotoxic, leading to degeneration of brain neurons and loss of cognitive abilities. Because AD largely affects society, researchers are constantly working to find a cure, which currently does not exist. The purpose of this study was to use Drosophila melanogaster as a living organism model for the expression of two types of Aβ proteins related to AD, Arctic (Glu22Gly) and TandemAβ, and to study the survival of these AD flies when Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was added to the fly food. The hypothesis was that BSA would be effective in slowing down and/or preventing formation of toxic Aβ-aggregates. The focus was therefore to investigate whether the AD flies would live longer if they were allowed to eat Bovine serum albumin and whether the soluble/insoluble Aβ levels in these flies would decrease in comparison to the control AD flies that were not allowed to eat BSA. The effect of BSA on toxicity was evaluated using survival assay on male flies and the levels of soluble/insoluble Aβ were evaluated using Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) on female flies. In both experiments, the following six groups of flies were examined: myow1118 ± BSA; myoArctic ± BSA; myoTandemAβ ± BSA. Conclusions from the studies are that the survival of AD flies could not be extended by adding 0.61 mM BSA to the food, rather the data showed a weak but significant toxic effect in the presence of BSA in the AD flies. However, MSD data showed a reduction of insoluble Aβ aggregates and an equilibrium shift from insoluble Aβ aggregates to soluble Aβ aggregates in the presence of BSA in the AD flies. Equilibrium shifts were particularly detectable in Myo-TandemAβ flies fed with BSA. In Myo-Arctic flies fed with BSA only reduction of insoluble Aβ could be detected. This shows that it is not the amount of Aβ aggregates that is decisive for toxicity, but rather the presence of specific aggregates that have toxic properties. If BSA shows good results in further studies, it could be used in the future to improve AD symptoms in patients.

Challenges experienced by educators in the implementation of inclusive education in primary schools in South AfricaLadbrook, Maughreen Winifred 02 1900 (has links)
Resting against a background of local and international movements in respect of human rights, South
African educators have had to implement a new curriculum, accept diversity and address inclusive
education with little or no training, insight and knowledge. Challenges at all levels in education,
impact on the successful education of children and the future of young adults who must as equal
members of society enter a fast changing global economy. Challenges for educators in South Africa
are unique. The lack of knowledge and training for educators and an inadequate infrastructure of the
country present as some of the challenges for educators. This qualitative study deals with the
subjective experiences of educators in primary schools. The research indicates that when these
challenges are addressed educators will be both, better supported and disposed, towards the
implementation of inclusive education idealised as the panacea for social transformation in South Africa. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.

Previous issue date: 2014-03-13 / The various activities inserted in the production processes are characterized by the generation of common solids (MSW) waste, whether in solid, liquid or gaseous. Therefore, this study aims to identify factors capable of explaining the economic potential of MSW as a sustainable regional development factor, transforming the problem of MSW generation in new business opportunity. For this purpose, the methodology included the implementation of steps to characterize the source of MSW municipalities under study, analysis of the models and technologies used in MSW, and identification of potential bottlenecks in the economic sectors and the systematization of results by presenting a new economic model using MSW as inputs in production processes. The results showed that the municipalities under study had an average generation of 54.5 t / day of plastic; 12 t / day of glass; 6:06 l t / day of metal; 60.6 tons / day of paper; 5.5 ton / day from other waste types and 418.5 tons / day of organic. It was identified that the marketing of MSW aluminum, cardboard and PET is more expressive in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná. From this information it was possible to estimate the total gross revenue for the 30 municipalities in the study, which was approximately R$ 3,642,408.38, of which this was more notable in the municipalities of Cascavel, Foz do Iguacu and Toledo , which together were responsible for obtaining 57% of the total gross revenue for the cities analyzed. The systematization of the results showed that the new model of MSW, send about 5.6 tonnes/day of MSW to the municipal landfill of Toledo, representing a reduction of 92% of the total previously forwarded by using the traditional management model MSW. Thus, the development of this new management model would help the sustainable development of meso study, it would be able to generate income from the implementation of new models of factories, developing new technologies, increased service life and reduced need for increased of area landfills and thus will make the municipalities fall under the guidelines of the law 12.305/2010 PNRS.
