benign epithelial odontogenic lesions are great clinical importance entities that develop in the jaws from the tissues that form teeth. It has been shown that in benign and malignant tumors, are present in a large number of tumor stem cells, which has great implications in the development of these lesions. Oct-4 and CD44 have been demos as important markers for tumoral stem cells. The objective of this study was to identify epithelial cells expressing stem cell markers by immunohistochemical expression of Oct-4 and CD44 in a series of cases of benign epithelial odontogenic lesions. The sample was comprised of 20 cases of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), 20 cases of solid/multicystic ameloblastoma and 20 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT). The expression of Oct-4 and CD44 was evaluated in epithelial lesions using the percentage of positive cells (PP) and the intensity of expression (IE), being realized the sum of these scores, resulting in Total Immunostaining Score (TIS) ranging 0 to 7. The results were submitted to the appropriate statistical test (nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman correlation coefficient). All cases were positive for both markers and most showed high expression of both markers. The analysis of Oct-4 expression revealed no statistically significant differences (p = 0.406) among the studied lesions. Regarding the CD44 expression, there was a statistically significant difference between the cases of ameloblastoma and TOA in relation to the CCO, with the latter show more cases in the score 7 (p = 0.034). In the correlation analysis of the immunoreactivity of both markers in the three lesions studied, there was no statistically significant correlation. The results of this study identified the presence of cells with stemness characteristics arranged at various sites in the epithelial component of the studied lesions suggesting their possible role in the histogenesis and differentiation in benign epithelial odontogenic lesions, thus contributing to the development of these lesions.

Introduction: Apurinic/Apyrimidinic Endonuclease 1 (APE-1) is an essential protein for DNA base excision repair (BER) pathway and regulation of redox activities. The ability of malignant cells to recognize and repair DNA damage is an important mechanism for tumor survival, and recent studies suggest that APE-1 overexpression is related to poor prognosis in some tumors. Purpose: To analyze the immunoreactivity of APE-1 in Pleomorphic Adenomas (PA) and Carcinomas Ex Pleomorphic Adenomas (CaExPA) of salivary glands. Materials and Methods: A total of 49 tumors fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin (33 PA and 16 CaExPA) underwent immunohistochemical study by the immunoperoxidase technique. APE-1 immunoreactivity was evaluated quantitatively by the percentage of immunopositive cells. For statistical analysis a significance level of 5% (p? 0.05) was adopted. Results: All cases of PA and CaExPA (n=49) were positive for APE-1, however, there was a higher expression in CaExPA, with statistically significant difference (p<0.001). There was no association between APE-1 expression and tumors of major or minor salivary gland, however, not encapsulated PA (median expression = 54.2%) showed higher expression when compared to encapsulated tumors (p=0.02). APE-1 overexpression was found mainly in cases of CaExAP with lymph node metastasis (median expression = 90.3% - p=0.002) and invasive pattern (median expression = 89.9% - p=0.003), when compared to cases without metastasis and intracapsular pattern. Conclusion: This study suggests that APE-1 is deregulated in the studied tumors. The increased expression of APE-1 is associated with the absence of complete capsule in PA and it is associated with more aggressive behavior in CaExPA.

The aim of this study was to analyze the immunoexpression of calcitonin (CTR) and glucorticoid (GCR) receptors in aggressive and non-aggressive central giant cell lesions (CGCL). This is an immunohistochemistry study (immunoperoxidase technique) of 52 cases of CGCL of the jaws, in which 12 patients were treated with intralesional triamcinolone injections and one with calcitonin nasal spray.
The mean of immunostaining was compared between the cell types and clinical subtype of the lesion. The correlations among means were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test. Of the 52 cases studied, 53.8% were females, with a mean of 25.69 years. Most lesions were located in the mandible. Thirty patients (57.7%) had aggressive lesions and 22 (42.3%) of the cases consisted of non-aggressive lesions. Surgery was the treatment of choice in 75% of the cases. In 56.7% of the aggressive CGCL surgery was performed, while 43.4% of patients were submitted to conservative treatment. Among
cases submitted to conservative treatment, the majority (n = 8; 61.5%) responded well to
treatment. CTR expression was observed in 67.3% and GCR in 96.15% of cases. There was
no significant statistical difference between the expression of CTRs and GCRs in mononuclear and multinucleated CGCLscells, regarding aggressiveness, treatment performed for aggressive lesions and the response to conservative treatment (p>0.05). The results of our research suggest that the immunoreactivity of CTRs and GCRs did not influence the response to clinical treatment with calcitonin or triamcinolone in the sample studied and it exhibited a varied expression regardless of the aggressiveness of the lesion.

The study of chemical reactions is among the most important contents to the understanding of
Chemistry discipline in basic education. However, there are still few studies about chemical
reactions as a complex system because, generally, this content is presented in textbooks,
taught and even researched in a fragmented form. The thesis here presented aims to
investigate, identify and characterize the mistakes and learning difficulties of the students
about chemical reactions as a complex system, using for that purpose the analysis of the
answers of 126 exams of candidates for the bachelor?s degree in Chemistry Teaching on the
entrance exam for the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The mistakes and
learning difficulties about the parameters ?G?, Kp, Ea and of the calculation of the amount of
substance in a chemical reaction have been identified, as well as the levels of development of
the ability to interpret the chemical reaction as a system. The main theoretical source of this
study is structured based on the mistakes and learning difficulties (N??EZ, RAMALHO,
2012), of the chemical reactions as complex systems (N??EZ, 1994; RESHETOVA, 1988;
SANDERSON, 1968). As methodology, it was prioritized the analysis of the answers to the
exams and the interview with the teachers. The results showed typical mistakes in the study
of this subject, especially low levels and skill development. No student was able to integrate
the different aspects in the systemic understanding of the chemical reaction. From the
interviews with Chemistry teachers from High School, it was determined the reasons the
teachers assign to those mistakes and learning difficulties. The interviews revealed that the
teachers do not work in the perspective of integration of the contents which leads the students
to present difficulties and make mistakes related to the content previously mentioned. The
study presents a proposal for the organization of the contents of Chemistry discipline for High
School as a possibility of a dialectic systemic integration of contents, understanding that this
systematic vision, leads to important contributions to the development of the theoretical
thinking of the students. We can mention as one of the conclusions of this study, the fact that
the non-systemic organization of contents do not favor this kind of thinking in students.

The discussion about rift evolution in the Brazilian Equatorial margin during the South America-Africa breakup in the Jurassic/Cretaceous has been focused in many researches. But rift evolution based on development and growth of faults has not been well explored. In this sense, we investigated the Cretaceous Potiguar Basin in the Equatorial margin of Brazil to understand the geometry of major faults and the influence of crustal heterogeneity and preexisting structural fabric in the evolution of the basin internal architecture. Previous studies pointed out that the rift is an asymmetrical half-graben elongated along the NE-SW direction. We used 2D seismic, well logs and 3D gravity modeling to analyze four major border fault segments and determine their maximum displacement (Dmax) and length (L) ratio in the Potiguar Rift. We constrained the 3D gravity modeling with well data and the interpretation of seismic sections. The difference of the fault displacement measured in the gravity model is in the order of 10% compared to seismic and well data. The fault-growth curves allowed us to divide the faulted rift border into four main fault segments, which provide roughly similar Dmax/L ratios. Fault-growth curves suggest that a regional uniform tectonic mechanism influenced growth of the rift fault segments. The variation of the displacements along the fault segments indicates that the fault segments were formed independently during rift initiation and were linked by hard and soft linkages. The latter formed relay ramps. In the interconnection zones the Dmax/L ratios are highest due to interference of fault segment motions. We divided the evolution of the Potiguar Rift into five stages based on these ratios and correlated them with the major tectonic stages of the breakup between South America and Africa in Early Cretaceous.

This study was developed in an area located on the outer shelf in the Potiguar Basin, Brazilian equatorial margin; this tropical shelf represents a modern, highly dynamic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system. Field sampling was carried out during 3 cruises surrounding a shallow-water exploratory well to compare sediment properties of the seafloor, including grain-size, texture, mineral composition, carbonate content, and organic matter, prior to drilling with samples obtained 3 and 12 months after drilling. The sample grid used had 16 stations located along 4 radials from 50 m the well up to a distance of 500 m. Sediments were analyzed in the first 0-2 cm, and 0-10 cm layers. The results show that sedimentary cover around the well is poor to very poorly sorted, with the particle size predominantly in the medium to coarse sand fraction, followed by gravel and mud. The content of calcium carbonate is greater than 96%, associated to bioclastic sediments, and the content of organic matter is less than 12%. Only minor sedimentological variations occured ?in the area affected by drilling operations. The most noticeable effects were observed during the second cruise, in terms of a change in grain size distribution associated to an increase in siliciclastic content, This impact occurred in the most surficial sediment (0-2 cm), in the radial closest to the well (50 m), and could suggest the effects of drilling. However, in the third cruise, one year after drilling, the sediments return to show the same characteristics as in the first cruise. These results show no significant sedimentological variations due to drilling activity, and indicate that ocean dynamics in this area was high enough to recover the environment original characteristics. / This study was developed in an area located on the outer shelf in the Potiguar Basin,

The Potengi River estuary has been affected by various anthropogenic factors over the years, as periodic dredging, industrial and domestic waste, traffic and other factors, causing various environmental disasters, including the notorious ecological accident in July 2007, which covered the municipalities of S?o Gon?alo do Amarante, Maca?ba and Natal. Foraminifera serve as viable study tools in these environments; they are able to identify ecologically stressed environments, pointing out hydrographic changes and depositional environments in estuaries. The necessity to check the differences in environmental gradients in places anthropically impacted in Potengi River and adjacent inner shelf through species of foraminifera, and, the responses of these organisms to physical, chemical and geological factors is to provide baseline in the diagnosis of environments. The results show the dominance of opportunistic Ammonia tepida, Bolivina striatula, Quinqueloculina patagonica and Q. miletti especially in regions close to shrimp farms and Baldo Channel sewage in fine grain environments; and Q. lamarckiana indicates penetration of the saline waters in Potengi River. The occurrence of low-salinity tolerant foraminiferal species typical of mangrove environments as Trochammina inflata and T. squamata in Potengi River Channel suggest they probably could have been transported from mangrove area near the Potengi river mouth to the inner shelf regions. These findings suggest Potengi River is able to export mixohaline and mangrove organisms to inner shelf. Two distinct environments were observed, the outermost area is more influenced by marine influence and the innermost area is less influenced. Calcareous and agglutinated species dominate Potengi River, while mouth and inner shelf areas are dominated by calcareous, agglutinated and porcelaneous species, which are typical of highly saline and hydrodynamic environments and the contributive factors that controls foraminiferal distribution were balance of marine and freshwater currents, grain size, availability of CaCO3 and organic matter.

In this work it was performed a study to obtain parameters for an 1D regional velocity model for the Borborema Province, NE Brazil. It was used earthquakes occurred between 2001 and 2013 with magnitude greater than 2.9 mb either from epicentres determined from local seismic networks or by back azimuth determination, when possible. We chose seven events which occurred in the main seismic areas in the Borborema Province. The selected events were recorded in up to 74 seismic stations from the following networks: RSISNE, INCT-ET, Jo?o C?mara ? RN, S?o Rafael ? RN, Caruaru - PE, S?o Caetano - PE, Castanh?o - CE, Santana do Acarau - CE, Taipu ? RN e Sobral ? CE, and the RCBR (IRIS/USGS?GSN). For the determination of the model parameters were inverted via a travel-time table and its fit. These model parameters were compared with other known model (global and regional) and have improved the epicentral determination. This final set of parameters model, we called MBB is laterally homogeneous with an upper crust at 11,45 km depth and total crustal thickness of 33,9 km. The P-wave velocity in the upper crust was estimated at 6.0 km/s and 6.64 km/s for it lower part. The P-wave velocity in the upper mantle we estimated at 8.21 km/s with an VP/VS ratio of approximately 1.74.

Forma??o Long?. / The Middle Devonian-Early Carboniferous sequence of the Parna?ba Basin, lithostratigraphically
defined as Canind? Group, has been reinterpreted using the basic model of sequence stratigraphy.
Therefore, lithology and gamma ray well-logs and seismic lines of central portion of the basin
were analyzed, producing up from there diagrams 1D, isochore maps and stratigraphic sections.
As results of this study, were defined two depositional cycles of second order, referred as
Depositional Sequence 1 (SEQ1) and the Depositional Sequence 2 (SEQ2). The SEQ1, with interval
about 37 Ma, is limited below by Early Devonian Unconformity and is equivalent to the formations
Itaim, Pimenteiras and Cabe?as. The SEQ2, which follows, comprises a range of about 15 Ma and is
equivalent to the Long? Formation
The SEQ1 starts with the lowstand systems tract, consisting of progradational parasequence
set in the basal part, predominantly pelitic, deposited on a prodelta under influence of storms and the
upper part consists in sandstones of deltaic front, with the maximum regressive surface on the upper
limit. The transgressive systems tract, deposited above, is characterized by retrogradacional parasequence
set composed of shallow shelf mudstones, deposited under storm conditions. The maximum
flooding surface, upper limit of this tract, is positioned in a shale level whose radioactivity in gammaray
well-log is close to 150 API. The highstand systems tract presents progradational parasequence
set, comprising mudstones and sandstones deposited in shelf, fluvial-estuarine or deltaic and periglacial
environments, with the upper limit the Late Devonian Unconformity. The SEQ2 was deposited in shelf environment, starting with the lowstand systems tract, that is characterized by a progradational parasequence set, followed by the transgressive systems tract, with retrogradational character. The upper limit of the tract corresponding to the fusion between maximum flooding surface with the upper limit of this sequence, which is the Early Carboniferous Unconformity, where the overlapping section was eroded. This section, which corresponds the highstand systems tract is restricted to portions at which the erosion that generate the Early-Carboniferous Unconformity was less effective, preserving the records of this unit.

The study area is within the Pirangi River Basin, eastern sector of Rio Grande do Norte state,
where is located of the Parnamirim city. It has an area of approximately 370 km?.
Urbanization has developed much fast without an appropriate infrastructure, mainly by the
lack of sewage systems, with risks of contamination of groundwater that may cause serious
damage to the health of the population. The Barreiras Aquifer System groundwater in the area
represents the main source of water supply for urban and rural populations. The use of
groundwater occurs without adequate planning and therefore, important recharge areas are
being occupied. This study was conducted to quantify the use and evaluation of the potential
of groundwater, in order to increase good water quality supply and lower risks of being
affected by polluting activities. With these objectives, the following activities were carried
out: 268 points of water have been registered; characterization of the lithological, thickness
and hydrogeological structure of the Barreiras aquifer, based on the correlation of well logs;
and evaluation of hydrodynamic parameters of the aquifer, from the interpretation of results
well pumping tests. It was found that the saturated thickness increases from west to east
towards the sea, with values ranging from 15,47-56,5 m with an average of 32,45 m. The
hydrodynamic parameters using Cooper-Jacob method were: average transmissivity of
5,9x10-3 m?/s and average hydraulic conductivity 2,82x10-4 m/s. The effective porosity is of
15%, obtained by applying Biecinski equation. The potentiometric map shows the main
direction of groundwater flow, from west to east, and identifies the recharge areas
corresponding to the region of the tablelands of the "Barreiras". The river valleys refer to the
discharge areas of the aquifer system. The Recharge was estimated at 253 mm/year, which
corresponds to the 16.4% rate of infiltration.
