Bezerra, Amanda Kelly Dias January 2017 (has links)
Due to this, the objectives of this research were: (i) to evaluate the effect of indolbutyric acid (IBA) and boron applied on cuttings and (ii) to determine the maximum period of cold storage of cuttings, maintaining high percentage and quality of the root system during the rooting process of cuttings of the azalea cultivars Otto and Terra Nova. The studies were developed in Holambra city, SP, in the commercial property "Sleutjes Azaleias" and the evaluations were carried out in the Laboratory of Seeds of Vegetable Plants of the Plant Production Department, São Paulo State University (Unesp), School of Agricultural and Veterinarian Sciences, Jaboticabal. In all the studies the experimental design was completely randomized. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme (doses of IBA: 0, 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg L-1 and boron: 0; 2,5 5,0 and 7,5 mg L-1); were four replicates and 10 cuttings per plot. In the second experiment, storage was carried out by collecting the herbaceous cuttings of plants grown in pots at the production area, 10 cm long, then packed in polypropylene containers and stored in a cold room (10 ± 1 °C) for different periods (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days) with four replications and 10 cuttings per plot. Sunflowers cultivation in the city CapitÃo PoÃo - PA: plastochron, water slides and boron fertilization / Cultivo de girassol no municÃpio de CapitÃo PoÃo - PA: plastocrono, lÃminas de Ãgua e adubaÃÃo borÃcica

Raimundo Thiago Lima da Silva 24 March 2015 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / The obtainment of information through the research has been decisive to provide technological support to sunflowers culture development, granting better productivities and economical incomes. Among the various technologies developed to sunflowers production, the adequate choice of cultivars constitutes one of the main components in the system of culture production. Considering the existence of the interaction genotypes x environment, researches are required, aiming to determine the agronomic behavior of genotypes and their adaptation to different environment conditions. Based on these principles, there were developed four experiments in CapitÃo PoÃo City, in Parà State, in Brazil, with two sunflower cultivars, Embrapa â 122 and Catissol. On experiment I, sunflower cultivarsâ plastochron was determined, sowed in two seasons in the year. On experiment II, the effect of different water slides over the productive behavior of sunflower cultivars was evaluated, which were cultivated in protected behavior, aiming to define criteria to irrigation handling. On experiment III, there were evaluated seven doses of boron (10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, 70 mg plant-1) and a witness, on the growing characteristics and on sunflower plants production. And on Experiment IV, the objective was to verify the relative content of water, the concentrations of total soluble amino acids, of total soluble proteins, of free ammoniums, deprolina and the activity of nitrate reductase, in sunflower leaves, in function of two cultivars and of different water slides. Through the obtained results, it was concluded that: the sowing seasons, the sub periods of vegetative development and the cultivars, possess different rights over the plastochron in sunflowers, with variations of 14,6 to 8787,0 ÂC day knot-1; the cultivar Catissol obtained values of mass of dried matter from the aerial part, mass of dried matter from the flower and the flower diameter responded in a linear way to the water slides. The variables, production, mass of 100 achenes and the number of leaves, were optimized by small doses of boron; and, finally, the applied water slides influenced on the concentrations of amino acids, protein, proline, relative content of water and on the activity of nitrate reductase, on sunflower leaves, as the genetic material in studies, presented different results, to these variables, excepting for the activity of nitrate reductase. Therefore, it was realized that sunflowers make mechanisms of osmotic adjustment in leaves, to tolerate various situations of humidity of water in the soil / A obtenÃÃo de informaÃÃes por meio da pesquisa tem sido decisiva para dar suporte tecnolÃgico ao desenvolvimento da cultura do girassol, garantindo maiores produtividades e retornos econÃmicos.

Although of the benefits of this technology on weed control, currently observed at some regions that, after the application glyphosate, the soybean GR were with leaf chlorosis and could be caused by glyphosate-induced deficiency of Manganese. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the post-emergence application of glyphosate and Mn on soybean GR at different phenological growth stages and your effect in nutrients uptake and soybean GR yield. The experiment was carried out at two farms (Lages de Pedra and São Manoel), both at city of Rio Brilhante-MS. The study was in a completely randomized block design with four (São Manoel) and six (Lages de Pedra) replicates. The treatments were analyzed as factorial 3x8 with three times of application (without glyphosate; glyphosate application (720 g e.a.) in phenological growth stages V2 + V4 (480 g e.a.) and application only V4 (1.200 g e.a.)) and eight foliar Mn application of Mn in different phenological growth stages (without Mn; Mn on V4; Mn on V4 + V8; Mn on V4 + R2; Mn on V4 + V8 + R2; Mn on V8; Mn on V8 + R2 e Mn on R2), completing 24 treatments. It was not observed at no moment of the development of the culture visual symptoms of plant toxicity effects caused by glyphosate application. As well, it was not observed effects of glyphosate application on soybean GR in uptake of Mn and nutrients as N, P, K, Fe, Zn e Cu, as well, in mass of 100 grains and yield culture. The foliar Mn application did not influence the mass of 100 grains and yield culture, however increased leaf Mn content when the application was carried at phenological growth stages V8 and R2 or inside these possible combinations. Avaliação do status de magnésio em pacientes com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 / Assessment of magnesium status in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Cristiane Hermes Sales 02 December 2008 (has links)
A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate Mg status in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The sample comprehended 51 individuals, both male and female, aged 53.6 ± 10.5 years, selected from the Endocrinology Clinic of the University Hospital Onofre Lopes (HUOL) in Natal/RN, Brazil. The project was approved by the Commission on Ethics in Research of the HUOL and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of São Paulo. The patients were assessed concerning anthropometry, diet, blood-glucose control, kidney functioning and lipid profile, besides plasma, erythrocyte, urinary and dietary Mg. An adequate intake of macronutrients and a low consumption of dietary Mg and fibers were observed. Unsatisfactory blood-glucose control and lipid profiles, besides kidney functioning without significant alterations, were also observed. Concerning Mg status, 70.6% of the sample presented biochemical parameters for this mineral below the reference values, and such parameters were lower in individuals with more extensive metabolic complications and microalbuminury. Inverse correlations between plasma Mg with fasting (r = -0.281, p = 0.046) and postprandial plasma glucose (r = -0.322, p = 0.021), and a positive correlation between urinary Mg with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.291, p = 0.038), waist circumference (r = 0.288, p = 0.041) and body weight index (r = 0.282, p = 0.045) were observed. Therefore, alterations in Mg status were detected in the studied population. Such alterations were more evident in patients with more extensive complications, thus demonstrating the association of factors related to this disease and Mg.

The study aimed to evaluate the performance of seeds and seedlings of cotton coated with phosphorus, zinc and boron through physiological attributes before and after storage. For each treatment was used nutrient insecticide, fungicide, polymer and water to complete the syrup. Five doses were tested, namely: 0.0; 5.0; 10.0; 15.0 and 20.0 g.kg -1 seed phytin 0.0; 3.0; 6.0; 9.0; 12.0 g.kg -1 zinc sulfate and 0.0; 0.05; 0.10; 0.20; 0.30 mL.kg-1 boron. The evaluation of the physiological quality before the storage period was analyzed by germination, first count of germination, accelerated aging, dry weight of shoot and root, length of roots and shoots, plant height, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, relative growth rate, leaf area index, speed of emergence and emergency field. Germination, first count of germination, accelerated aging, shoot length and root dry mass of shoots and roots, plant height, emergence index 120 days of storage at ambient conditions of Pelotas RS. It was used a completely randomized design with four replications. The conclusions were: treatment of cotton seeds with phytin increased the percentage of germination, first count, speed index, accelerated aging, root length, emergency field before and after the storage period. The treatment of cotton seeds with ZnSO4 in cotton seed does not affect the accumulation of dry matter of shoots, however, decreases the accumulation of dry roots. For boron micronutrient seed treatment helps improve germination, first count of germination, germination velocity index, length of air accelerated aging before and after storage.

Chemical properties of continental aerosol transported over the Southern Ocean : Patagonian and Namibian sources / Caractérisation chimique de l’aérosol continental transporté sur l’Océan Austral : sources patagonienne et namibienne

Qu, Zihan 25 January 2016 (has links)
Mineral dust is considered to be an important supplier of micronutrient for the Southern Ocean where the primary production is limited by insufficient supply of micronutrients. Patagonia (South America) and Namibia (Southern Africa) are two main dust sources for the South Atlantic section of the Southern Ocean. Emission inventories of bioavailable micronutrients from these two regions regulate the final biological impact on marine ecosystem in the South Atlantic Ocean. This thesis is mainly focused on the investigation of 1) the atmospheric dust concentration and its temporal pattern in Patagonia, 2) the spatial heterogeneity of dust elemental composition in Patagonia and Namibia, and 3) the pH dependence of elemental solubility in Patagonian and Namibian dust. These three aspects are the key issues to model the emission inventories of bioavailable micronutrients from dust sources. Dust concentration measurements were conducted in Patagonia-Atlantic Coast and revealed a seasonal pattern of dust concentration with lower dust level in winter than the other three seasons. Meteorological records suggest that this seasonal pattern is associated with the variation of soil moisture in source areas rather than the recurrently high wind speed. Dust samples were generated from Patagonian and Namibian soils to investigate the elemental composition and the elemental solubility of source dust. Dust elemental composition differs to different degrees from their parents soils, particularly in Namibia due to the dilution effect of quartz in soil. Spatial variability of dust elemental composition was observed at both continental scale and regional scale in Patagonia and Namibia. Variations in Ca and Mg content are the main reasons for the spatial heterogeneity of dust elemental composition. Elemental solubility of Patagonian and Namibian dust increased with acidity of leaching solution. More soluble elements namely Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Sr and Ba showed much higher solubility in calcium-rich dust due to the presence of carbonate. The dust concentration record obtained in Patagonia may help to better quantify the dust emission in subantarctic region and to constrain dust models. Database of dust elemental composition and elemental solubility in Patagonia and Namibia also contributes to the evaluation of emission inventories of soluble elements from dust sources to the Southern Ocean.

The Dietary Decision-Making Process of Women in Nigeria

Mapis, Gachomo Joanne 01 January 2020 (has links)
Nigerians have been opting for a more processed Western diet. These changes in dietary choices have aligned with obesity and undernutrition, attributable to micronutrient deficiencies or malnutrition. Many scholars have presented varying intervention strategies ranging from consumption of a variety of foods containing the necessary micronutrients to food fortification. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore the perceptions of women in an urban city in Nigeria on indigenous foods and Western dietary influences to determine social interactions, the consequence of the interactions, and the women’s current perceptions of food choices. The social-ecological model was used to explore the interaction between a woman and her environment. Women between the ages of 20 to 30 from the urban city of Jos, Nigeria, constituted the population of interest, and 12 women were chosen for the sample. From the in-depth interviews, a thematic analysis was employed to provide sociocontextual reasoning for changes in diet that have led to the loss of interest in traditional foods and cultures. This study found that Jos has a variety of foods, yet women choose the same staple foods to feed their families. Additionally, despite a marginal understanding of the health impact of diet, most women choose the convenience and palatability of Western options, citing cost as the rationale for choosing to cook staple Western-inspired meals at home. Understanding media, convenience, and cost can impact social change by enlightening communities on the interconnectedness of human health, cultures, and industrialization. Health care providers can monitor the outcomes of those who consume a variety of indigenous foods to see how such a practice could influence the overall health status of Nigerian families.

Ramashia, Shonisani Eugenia 21 September 2018 (has links)
PhD (Food Science and Technology) / Department of Food Science and Technology / Finger millet (FM) (Eleusine coracana) grains are the staple food in Africa and India for communities with low socio-economic growth. The grains have high content of calcium, dietary fibre, carbohydrates that are rich in protein, fat, iron, phosphorus, vitamin and essential amino acids. Flours from milky cream (MC), brown and black varieties of FM were fortified with vitamin (vit) B₂ and zinc oxide (ZnO) in order to restore the nutrients that were lost during milling and sieving processes. The main aim of the study was to analyse the physical, nutritional composition and functional properties of flours from three (3) FM varieties fortified with vit B2 and ZnO. Pearl millet was used for comparison with the results obtained from this study. MC, brown and black varieties of FM flour treatments were arranged as a completely randomized design (CRD) in three (3) replicates. Physical properties: dimensional properties, colour attributes, kernel weight, bulk density (BD), true density, porosity, surface area, kernel volume, aspect ratio, sphericity and moisture content of the FM grains were analysed. Vitamins and minerals were also analysed. Functional properties: colour attributes, bulk density (BD), water absorption capacity (WAC), oil absorption capacity (OAC), swelling capacity (SC), swelling index (SI), foaming capacity (FC), foaming solubility (FS), dispersibility (Dis), viscosity (cool & hot paste), pasting properties, thermal properties and microscopic structure of FM flours were determined. Data generated were analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Moisture content of MC FM grain and flour was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than brown and black varieties but was within the specified range of <12%. This indicated the long storage shelf-life of the grains and flours. Length of brown FM grains was significantly higher (p < 0.05) when compared to MC and black varieties. MC variety was significantly higher than other varieties in width, kernel weight, bulk density, true density, aspect ratio and sphericity. The information obtained from this study will help in designing suitable equipment for planting, harvesting, storage, processing and packaging of grains. Pearl millet grain was significantly higher than FM flours in all physical properties. MC FM was significantly higher iii in L* (whiteness/ brightness), b* (yellowness/ blueness), C* (chroma), Hº (hue angle) and ZnO values compared to brown and black flours. MC raw fortified finger millet (RFFM) and instant fortified finger millet (IFFM) flours were significantly higher in vitamin B2. People prefer fortified MC flour because most of people living in South Africa use white maize as their staple food and it is similar to MC. Colour is the most important quality parameter in food processing industries and it is also attracts the consumer’s choice and preference. The vitamins and minerals that were lost during sieving, drying and milling were replaced by the two (2) fortificants added which may help to reduce the micronutrient deficiencies. Milky cream FM flours showed significantly high (p < 0.05) values in BD, WAC, OAC, SI, FC and dis. These are the fundamental physico-chemical properties that reflect the interaction between the composition and molecular structure. Length of brown FM grains was significantly higher (p < 0.05) when compared to MC and black variety. The MC variety was significantly higher than other varieties in width, kernel weight, bulk density, true density, aspect ratio and sphericity. Pearl millet was significantly higher than FM flours in all physical properties. MCFM variety was significantly higher in L* (whiteness/ brightness), b* (yellowness/ blueness), C* (chroma), and Hº (hue angle) values as compared to other FM varieties. Moisture content of MC flour was significantly higher as compared to brown and black FM flours. Pasting properties of MC raw finger millet (RFM) and RFFM flours showed significantly higher in peak viscosity (PV) (3518 cP), final viscosity (FV) (6554 cP), breakdown viscosity (BDV) (703 cP) and setback viscosity (SV) (3868 cP) as compared to other RFM and RFFM flours. Brown instant finger millet (IFM) and IFFM flours had significantly higher of PV (723 cP), trough viscosity (TV) (655 cP) and FV (983 cP). IFFM flours had significantly higher values of PV (712 cP), TV (614 cP) and FV (970 cP), respectively. The instant pearl millet (IPM) and instant fortified pearl millet (IFPM) showed significantly higher value in BDV (330 cP and 131 cP) and SV (362 cP and 346 cP), respectively. Thermal properties of black RFM was significantly higher in onset temperature (To) (74.31), peak temperature (TP) (81.94ºC) and conclusion temperature (Tc) (89.64) and RFFM starches were significantly high in To (81.80ºC), TP (84.22ºC) and TC (92.81ºC), respectively. Milky ivcream IFM starch showed significantly higher values in TO (84.57ºC), TP (87.27ºC), Tc (92.81ºC) and ΔH (7.63ºC) compared to other starches. Brown IFFM flour was significantly higher value in To (85.88ºC) and TP (87.14ºC). The starch of IFPM was significantly higher in enthalpy of gelatinisation (6.91ºC) and PHI (2.94ºC) as compared to other FM starches. Brown IFM flour showed significantly higher value in gelatinisation temperature range (13.50ºC). The microscopic structure revealed that RFM and RFFM flours had oval and smooth surfaces. RFM and RFFM flours showed positive effect after fortificants were added because the starch granules, protein bodies and protein matrix were visible and formed crystal. IFM and IFFM flours had some holes, dents and rough surfaces. Instant fortified flours showed negative effect after fortificants were added due to technological processes such as recooking and remilling of flours. Different variations observed on physical, nutritional and functional properties after adding the fortificants may affect the physical, chemical and organoleptic properties of food produced from fortified flour. There is need to fortify FM flours with ZnO which may help to replace the value lost during milling and sieving operations. It is possible that the availability of ZnO could reduce the incidence of some non-communicable diseases. / NRF

Efficacy of micronutrient seed priming on maize (zea mays) growth and yield in micronutrient soils in Limpopo Province

Rapetsoa, Mokgatla Collen January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M. Sc. Agriculture (Soil Science)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / One of the major constraints to crop productivity in South Africa is crop nutrient deficiency especially micronutrients. Laboratory, glasshouse and field studies were carried out during the 2016/2017 growing season to assess the effects of micronutrient (Zn, B and Mo) seed priming on maize growth and yield in micronutrient deficient soils of the Limpopo province. The laboratory experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design (CRD) laid out in a 3 x 5 x 3 factorial treatment structure with three replications. The assessments of the micronutrients were made at 0%, 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.5% concentrations. The seeds were primed in the solutions for 24 h, 12 h and 8 h. The glasshouse experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design (CRD) laid out in a 3 x 4 x 2 factorial treatment structure with three replications. In the field, a single factor experiment in a randomised complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and a control was used, with micronutrient concentrations as levels. The laboratory study investigated the effect of seed priming with Zn, Mo and B on germination (germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), the coefficient velocity of germination (CVG), days to germination (DG) and mean germination time (MGT)). The interaction between seed priming duration and concentration levels of seeds primed with B had significant effect (P < 0.05) on germination. The interaction between seed priming duration and concentration levels of seeds primed with Zn had significant effect (P < 0.05) on germination. The interaction between seed priming duration and Mo concentration levels on CVG, MGT and DE had no significant different (P > 0.05). Meanwhile, the effect on GP and GR had significant (P < 0.05) effects. Seed priming with the micronutrients and water resulted in improved GP, MGT and CVG for seeds primed with 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1% for 24 h in laboratory conditions. The glasshouse study was established to investigate the effect micronutrient seed priming on seedling establishment and growth. The effects of the interaction between Mo concentration levels and duration, Zn concentration levels and duration, B concentration levels and duration and control had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on days to emergence (DE), seedling wet weight (WW), dry weight (DW), chlorophyll, stem diameter, plant height and final root length (RL). Furthermore, seeds primed at lower concentration levels (0.05, 0.01 and 0.1%) with longer duration priming period (24 hours) for Mo, Zn and B recorded higher results on the seedling emergence and establishment parameters. The field investigation showed that priming with micronutrients solutions had no significant difference on the final values of dry biomass, prolificacy, harvest index and grain yield. Seeds primed with 0.05, 0.01 and 0.1 % concentration levels with longer duration priming period (24 hours) showed improvement in germination and seedling establishment. The grain yield and grain nutrient content was not improved, meanwhile emergence was improved. This confirms that not only micronutrients limit yields maximization and crop nutrients content retention solely, rather that the complexity of the agricultural crop production environment should be well understood by all farmers to archive their goals.
