Effects of the Practiced Routines Parent Training Program on Behavioral Strategy Use, Parental Well-Being, and Child Challenging Behavior in Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum DisorderRaulston, Tracy 10 April 2018 (has links)
In this study, a concurrent randomized multiple baseline across three parent-child dyads single-case design was employed to evaluate the effects of a brief three-week parent training program, titled Practiced Routines. The Practiced Routines parent training program included positive behavior supports (PBS) and mindfulness strategies within the context of natural family routines. Three mothers and their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participated. Visual analysis combined with a standardized mean difference analysis revealed mixed results with a medium effect found for increases in parent behavioral strategy use and small effects found for reductions in parent stress and child challenging behavior. All three mothers rated the social validity of the Practiced Routine program favorably. Implications for science and practice in educational and behavior health early intervention for families of children with ASD are discussed.

Mindfulness Practitioners in the Classroom: An Exploration of Lived ExperiencesJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: Within the past 10 years, there has been an increased interest in providing teachers with mindfulness training. This is due largely in part to the amount of stress that K-12 teachers report as a result of the profession and the research proposing that practicing mindfulness helps one cope with stress and offers the potential to promote one's well-being.
This qualitative study explores the intersection of mindfulness and K-12 teaching. Four K-12 teachers who self-identified as mindfulness practitioners were interviewed, and their lived experiences as mindfulness practitioners and teachers are explored throughout this study. Through in-depth, phenomenologically-based interviews, the participants' life histories in relation to becoming mindfulness practitioners and teachers are uncovered, as well as their experiences as mindfulness practitioners in the classroom, and their reflections upon what is means to be a mindfulness practitioner and a teacher.
For the participants in this study, they believed their mindfulness practices helped them cope with the demands of teaching. The participants also viewed mindfulness practices as a pedagogical tool for promoting their students' social and emotional well-being. As one of the first studies to explore teachers who have personal mindfulness practices and how those practices transfer or do not transfer into their professional experiences, it adds teachers' voices to the mindfulness in education phenomena. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2015

The Failure Project: Self-Efficacy, Mindset, Grit and Navigating Perceived Failures in Design and the ArtsJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: Artists and designers are preparing for rapidly changing and competitive careers in creative fields that require a healthy dose of resiliency to persevere. However, little is known on how students within these fields become more self-efficacious, gritty, situated toward a growth mindset, and persistent over time. This mixed-method action research study investigates how undergraduate arts and design college students approach and navigate perceptions of failure as well as incorporates an intervention course designed to increase their self-efficacy, growth mindset, and academic persistence. Participants were eighteen arts and design students representing a variety of disciplines from an eight-week, one-unit, 300-level course that utilized arts-based methods, mindfulness, and active reflection. After the course, students had significant changes in their self-efficacy and academic persistence as well as moderate significant change in their fixed mindset. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2018

Introduction: Each year worldwide millions of women are screened for breast cancer and some of them will undergo additional investigations, including breast biopsy. Ultrasound guided core needle biopsy is a minimally invasive method for the diagnosis of suspected mammary lesions and has many advantages when compared to surgical biopsies. Core biopsy is an outpatient procedure and analgesic medication is rarely necessary after tissue removal. Nevertheless, any invasive procedure, however small it may be, is accompanied by experiences of anxiety, pain and fear of the unknown. Anti Stress Medicine recognizes that thoughts, feelings, levels of anxiety, and ability to cope with stressful events can affect health and health perception. Anti-Stress Medicine programs reduce stress and help practitioners to have positive attitudes in their daily lives. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the impact of Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on quantitative and qualitative stress parameters on patients undergoing imaging-guided breast biopsies. Methods: After giving informed consent, 82 women that needed percutaneous imaging-guided breast biopsy were randomized into two groups: MBI group or standard care control group. One week before the biopsy procedure, minutes prior to the biopsy procedure on the waiting room and during the biopsy procedure, the MBI group was exposed to audio guided meditations and relaxing music and the standard care control group received supportive dialogue from the biopsy team. Participants completed questionnaires measuring depression, anxiety and stress (DASS-21), demographics, and medical history, evaluated their pain experience through a Visual Analogue Scale for Pain (VAS) and had their systolic and diastolic blood pressure, initial and final temperate, heart rate, oxygen saturation and cortisol salivary measured. Results: Participation in the mindfulness intervention group was associated with reduced levels of perceived stress, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation compared to participation in the standard care group (P values < 0.05). No difference was observed regarding salivary cortisol levels, peripheral temperature and pain perception between the two studied groups. Conclusion: Results indicate that an extremely brief mindfulness intervention is a feasible and acceptable intervention, suggesting that Mindfulness-based programs may be beneficial to reduce discomfort in acutely stressful settings.

MINDFULNESS MATTERS: The Effects of Mindfulness on Organizational Citizenship BehaviorMulligan, Rowan 01 January 2018 (has links)
Both mindfulness and authentic leadership base themselves on self-awareness. Authentic leadership has positively predicted organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and mindfulness has been positively correlated to work engagement, which has shared positive relationships with OCB. Job demands (JD) have been shown to compromise work engagement. Using a sample of 134 MBA and undergraduate students, a longitudinal design evaluated the meditational role of authentic functioning (AF) between mindfulness and OCB and the moderating role of JD. Over the course of three months, three questionnaires were administered to measure mindfulness, AF, OCB, and JD. Despite the positive predictive relationship between mindfulness and AF, there was not a significant predictive relationship between AF and OCB or the predictor (i.e. mindfulness) and criterion (i.e. OCB) variables, so structural equation modeling could not reveal if AF mediates the relationship between mindfulness and OCB. These findings suggest that AF could be a characteristic mechanism of mindfulness that helps facilitate certain behaviors. Future practical implications could suggest the prosocial value of cultivating mindfulness and authentic leadership to promote overall organizational functioning.

A Brief Mindfulness Intervention: Effects on Counselor Trainees’ Multicultural Counseling Competence and Ethnocultural EmpathyJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: Increasing counselor trainees’ self-efficacy for multicultural counseling competence (MCC) is an essential part of their professional development to serve racially and ethnically diverse clients effectively. The present study examined the impact of multicultural training and the effects of a brief mindfulness intervention, compared to a control condition, on counselor trainees’ self-reported ethnocultural empathy and MCC. Data obtained from a sample of masters (n = 63) and doctoral (n = 23) counselor trainees were analyzed through a series of linear multiple hierarchical regression analyses. Consistent with previous research, results revealed that multicultural training significantly predicted scores of self-reported multicultural counseling knowledge and empathic feeling. The mindfulness intervention significantly predicted self-reported multicultural counseling knowledge. There was a significant interaction between condition (i.e., mindfulness intervention or control) and previous multicultural training when examining ethnocultural empathy’s empathic feeling and expression subscale. Specifically, trainees with lower levels of multicultural training who received the mindfulness intervention scored higher on empathic feeling compared to those in the control condition, while at higher levels of multicultural training there were no differences across condition. Implications for future research and counselor training are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Mindfulness Intervention / Control Condition / Masters Thesis Counseling 2018

Examining the Efficacy of the Ninja Mind Training (NMT) Program: A Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Bullied TeensJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: School bullying is a serious problem for children and adolescents, associated with a multitude of psychological and behavioral problems. Interventions at the individual level have primarily been social skills training for victims of bullying. However, investigators have had mixed results; finding little change in victimization rates. It has been suggested victims of school bullying have the social skills necessary to be effective in a bullying situation; however they experience intense emotional arousal and negative thoughts leading to an inability to use social skills. One intervention that has been getting increasing acknowledgement for its utility in the intervention literature in psychology is mindfulness. However, there has been no research conducted examining the effects of mindfulness meditation on victims of bullying. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop an online intervention for victims of bullying that utilizes the cutting-edge technique of mindfulness and to determine the efficacy of this intervention in the context of bullying victimization. Participants were 32 adolescents ages 11 to 14 identified by their school facilitators as victims of bullying. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to assess the efficacy of the NMT program versus a treatment as usual (TAU) social skills program. Results revealed significant decreases in victimization and increases in mindfulness among both treatment groups from pre-test to follow-up and post-test to follow-up assessments. There were no differences found between the two treatment groups for mean victimization or mindfulness scores. Overall, the NMT program appears to be a promising online intervention for bullied teens. Directions for future research and limitations of this study were also discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Counseling Psychology 2013
