Are there benefits to the mistakes? : A comparison between recording jazz music in the studio and a live performance

Hlynsson, Baldvin Snær January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, two different ways of music performing will be compared: • Music as recorded in a recording studio • Music performed on stage before an audience. My main focus was to compose music that was complex enough so that the band might face some problems when playing it live but rehearse it well enough to overcome those problems. I started by making “produced” versions of the songs in Ableton, where I recorded every single part with sampled instruments. These versions had the finished arrangements and sounded pretty close to what I wanted to achieve with the band. Then I wrote the sheet music carefully and sent it, along with the recordings, to the band. I made a rehearsing schedule and booked rooms well in advance to minimize the risk of problems later on. I also booked a studio to record the music after the rehearsals and before the concert. In the studio, we first recorded the jazz band and later recorded the string quartet as an overdub. After I had mixed those two recordings together, I listened very carefully to everything that could be improved. Some musicians wanted to overdub their solos afterwards and I overdubbed some solos myself as well. When listening back and going through all the details the days before the concert, I found out what could be improved and made a list of possible improvements for the dress rehearsal. I ended up being more satisfied with the studio recording though than the concert, sound and performance-wise. I had much more control over the sound, which made the end result better to my ears than the concert. Of course, the concert had its pros as well. The concert went very well according to plan thanks to good planning in advance as well as well written-out arrangements and problem-free parts. One of the research questions was if mistakes could possibly benefit the music at the concert.I think mistakes don’t necessarily benefit the music, but the live scenario might sometimes be more exciting since nothing is edited and the players have to find their way back home if they go out of the road. However, the profoundness of a well recorded recording can be very pleasing to listen to as well so both have their strengths and weaknesses. Those two recordings, the one from the studio and the one from the concert are obviously different and in this thesis, the difference between the two will be investigated furthermore. / <p>Locomotive - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>Lost in Translation - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>Lost but not Least - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>Milders Mailbox - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>Psalm - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>A lullaby for the possessed - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p>Encore: Thank you Maestro - Baldvin Hlynsson</p><p></p><p>Jazz group:</p><p>Tumi Torfason – trumpet</p><p>Björgvin Ragnar Hjálmarsson - tenor saxophone</p><p>Bjarni Már Ingólfsson - jazz guitar   </p><p>Baldvin Hlynsson (myself) – piano and synthezisers</p><p>Olle Adell - electric bass</p><p>Sammy Hsia – drums </p><p>Classical group:Sara-Felicia Nyman Stjärnskog – violin I</p><p>Emma Alriksson – violin II</p><p>Ragnhild Kvist – viola</p><p>Hillevi Rasmusson Klingberg - cello</p>

Från koncept till verklighet : Översättning av psykologisk trygghet

Gäreskog, Hannes, Karlsson Riekki, Emmy January 2024 (has links)
ABSTRACT   Title: From concept to reality:  the translation of psychological safety   Level: Bachelor's Thesis in Business Administration   Author: Hannes Gäreskog and Emmy Karlsson Riekki   Supervisor: Emilia Kvarnström   Date: 2024 - may   Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate how psychological safety has been translated at Furuviksparken based on Røvik's (2000) four translation strategies.   Method: The study employed a qualitative research approach, collecting empirical data through semi-structured interviews with ten leaders from Furuviksparken. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify themes and patterns in the respondents' answers. The results of the study were then compared against the theoretical framework, and conclusions were subsequently drawn.   Results and conclusions: This study has concluded that Furuviksparken has translated the concept of psychological safety using two of Røvik's (2000) four translation strategies: concretization and fusion. "The concretization occurred when Furuviksparken interpreted the concept of psychological safety and transformed this general formula into more concretely applicable activities. The fusion took place when Furuviksparken implemented TEAL in connection with psychological safety. These two approaches have thus merged and are difficult to distinguish from each other."   Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how leaders can foster psychological safety in the workplace and provides insights for practical application in organizational development and human resource management. Various methods for concretizing the work with psychological safety are illustrated. The study also demonstrates how psychological safety can be integrated with other organizational theories, such as TEAL.   Suggestions for future research: The purpose of this study is to investigate how demographic aspects influence the implementation of psychological safety in a group or organization.

Pantůčková, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
Title: Working with numerical and algebraic expressions in the compulsory education Author: Bc. Lenka Pantůčková Department: Department of Mathametics and Mathematical Education Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Jarmila Novotná, CSc. This Diploma Thesis deals with numerical and algebraic expressions in elementary school. The theoretical part deals with the framework educational programme for elementary education and grammar schools. It further mentions the propaedeutic of algebraic expressions at the first and second levels. It also introduces the most frequent mistakes done in calculating algebraic expressions. Meanings for the variable are stated as well. The last pre-chapter of the theoretical part is focused on statistics, which is further used for the experiment result evaluation. The experimental part first states the aims and methods of the research. Selected elementary schools taking part in the experiment are further introduced. An analysis of mathematics text books for the eighth grade (mainly chapters concerning the algebraic expressions), the selected schools use in their lessons, is also carried out. The experimental part also introduces the test presented to 128 pupils. Further pre-chapters are devoted to hypotheses and expected mistakes in single subtasks. In the conclusion of the experimental...

Obtíže žáků při řešení vybraných slovních úloh z výzkumu TIMSS / Pupils' difficulties in solving selected word problems from TIMSS research

Matěka, Petr January 2013 (has links)
Pupils' difficulties in solving selected word problems from TIMSS research. (Diploma Thesis.) Abstract The theoretical part of the diploma thesis describes international comparative surveys, namely PISA and TIMSS, and analyses results of Czech pupils. Some areas are distinguished in which our pupils were unsuccessful and from them, the area of word problems and their mathematisation was selected for further work. Next, a solving strategy is characterised and some relevant research from this area is given. The core of the work lies in the experimental part whose goal was to find out what strategies pupils use when solving selected problems from TIMSS research and why they fail in them, via the analysis of pupils' written solutions complemented by interviews with them. Causes of failure of our pupils in these problems in TIMSS 2007 are looked for in mistakes pupils make, while it is also followed in what phase of the solving process they appear. The participants of research were pupils of Grade 9 of a primary school who solved three selected word problems from TIMSS research. Their written solutions were complemented by interviews with the experimenter focused on their mistakes and lack of clarity of the solutions. Four pupils participated in a pilot study. The atomic analysis of their solutions confirmed...

Étude sur la normativité précontractuelle : recherche à partir des fautes commises en contractant / Study on pre-contractual normativity : research from pre-contractual mistakes

Fathisalout, Motahareh 25 November 2015 (has links)
Absent as such in the discourse of French civil lawyers, the pre-contractual normativity is a legal phenomenon. Its comprehension supposes temporarily suspending the usual reasoning by which a jurist apprehends the pre-contractual period.Revealed through mistakes committed during pre-contractual negotiations, pre-contractual normativity is distinct from general and abstract normativity of the pre-contractual period and indicated in various provisions of the Civil Code (art. 1109 et seq.) and jurisprudential principles (e.g. good faith). As it is concrete, pre-contractual normativity firstly appears as a normative relationship, established between negotiators in the process of negotiating, whether the contract is finally signed or not. This relationship is the material reality of this particular normativity. Secondly, pre-contractual normativity sends back to a norm. As it is endogenous, it is revealed in the evolving environment, in which the negotiators voluntarily place themselves to settle the content of their future contract.Pre-contractual normativity is where a specific pre-contractual norm and a relationship forged between negotiators meet. It renders ineffective the theory of sources of obligations, since the latter, which is known for listing the sources of normativity, fails to explain the former with a single source. Pre-contractual normativity is eclectic and complex and thus, defies a single theorization in the way it is presented. Created in the process of a normative discussion which supposes considering negotiators in the relationship that unites them to one another, the concrete pre-contractual norm is achieved, case-by-case, under the supervision of a judge, who afterwards recognizes a presence or absence of such a norm at the end of a debate in which the negotiators – who have become party to the case - actively take part. The aim is to put forward the interests that stir them during the negotiations and that they now intend to have the judge's favor in his balancing of interests. The demonstration of pre-contractual normativity and its modus operandi are hypothesis of quasi-law and invite jurists to rethink the paths to normativity to give way to the completely inherent sociability that characterizes the law.

The Acquisition Of The Copula Be In Present Simple Tense In English By Native Speakers Of Russian

Antonova Unlu, Elena 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates the acquisition of the copula be in present Simple Tense in English by native speakers of Russian. The aim of the study is to determine whether or not Russian students with different levels of English proficiency encounter any problems while using the copula be in Present Simple Tense in English. The study also identifies the domains related to the use of the copula be that appear to be most problematic for native speakers of Russian. To carry out the current research two diagnostic tests measuring receptive and productive skills related to the use of the copula be in Present Simple Tense in English were developed. The data were collected from three groups of Russian students who were in the first, fourth and eighth years of learning English. The data in each of the domains related to the use of the copula be in Present Simple Tense in English were classified under four main categories: (i) correct use, (ii) omission, (iii) misinformation, (iv) addition. Both, quantitative and qualitative analyses were used in the study. The results of the study indicated that all the native speakers of Russian who participated in the study had difficulties with the acquisition of the copula be in Present Simple Tense in English. The findings of the study revealed that along with the developmental mistakes/errors (i.e., omissions of the copula be and misuse of the forms of the copula be), which seem to disappear with the lasting exposure to English, there are other mistakes/errors in the performance of the native speakers of Russian which are persistent. Negative transfer at the morphological level and incomplete understanding and application of the rule are suggested as the underlying reasons for the persistent mistakes/errors made by the Russian learners.

L2 WRITING TEACHERS&rsquo / PERCEPTIONS OF MISTAKES IN STUDENT WRITING AND THEIR PREFERENCES REGARDING FEEDBACK: THE CASE OF A TURKISH PRIVATE UNIVERSITY Dokuzoglu, Selcen M.A. Program of English Language Teaching Supervisor: Prof. Dr. H&uuml / sn&uuml / Enginarlar September 2010, 161 pages This study aimed to investigate L2 writing instructors&rsquo / perceptions of seriousness of different mistake types in upper-intermediate level students&rsquo / essays. It also set out to examine the teachers&rsquo / preferences related with feedback provision. Furthermore, whether there were discrepancies between the teachers&rsquo / claims about the issues mentioned above and their actual performance while marking the essays was looked into. The study was conducted at the Preparatory School of a private university in Turkey. Ten essays written by upper intermediate level students were marked by ten writing teachers who showed the most disturbing mistakes in these essays. They also gave feedback for these papers and half of the teachers were requested to think aloud while evaluating the essays. In addition, a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were used by the v questionnaire were analyzed through SPSS 15.0. This data gathering instrument was implemented on ten writing teachers working at the institution. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics were used. The averages showing the seriousness of different mistake types and the frequency at which the teachers use different feedback techniques were revealed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five teachers. The results of the interviews were analyzed through content analysis. The results of the study revealed that 80 % of the teachers viewed content related and organizational problems more disturbing than those related with accuracy. However, for 20 % of the teachers mistakes concerning the accuracy of the sentences were more serious. As for the feedback preferences of the teachers, 90 % of them used error codes while marking the essays and all the teachers preferred to write comments. While 60 % of the teachers were in favour of marking students&rsquo / mistakes comprehensively, the rest (40 %) believed selective marking was preferable. Moreover, it was found out that the teachers&rsquo / claims were compatible with their actual performances although some contradictions were observed in their performance.
