Effective health apps for promoting physical activity : A systematic literature review

Siösteen, Lisa January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: Physical activity is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, society is becoming increasingly physically inactive, leading to more sedentary lifestyles. Engaging in physical activity reduces the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and type 2 diabetes. For individuals with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes, physical activity can be an important part of treatment. The rise of digitalization has brought about a proliferation of health apps, which have the potential to promote healthy behavior changes. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the factors in health apps that make some of them effective in increasing physical activity among adults at risk for type 2 diabetes, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes. Method: The study was conducted as a systematic literature review with 12 scientific articles. The analysis was performed using thematic analysis. Results: Effective health apps are multifactorial, influenced by multiple factors. The analysis generated three themes: user experience and engagement, behavioral theories, and app functionalities. These three themes are crucial for achieving behavior change in a health app. User experience and engagement can be enhanced through regular feedback. Additionally, personalized goals can positively impact engagement in health behaviors. App design that integrates behavioral theories can support motivation and help users overcome barriers to physical activity. Conclusion: Effective health apps are multifactorial and require the integration of features that enhance user experience, incorporate behavior theories, and are tailored to the target audience to support behavior change. Future research should focus on evaluating the long-term effects of digital health interventions to promote sustainable behavior changes over time.

Cidade instantânea (IC) / Instant city (IC)

Maia, Marcelo Reis 22 April 2013 (has links)
We suggest the hypothesis of an Instant City identified in everyday situations conditioned by information and communication technologies, especially the ubiquitous computing, also known as pervasive computing or ambient computing. The research points to the understanding of an Instant City that emerges in collectives without a precise scale or location, with extremely fragile, fluid and temporary boundaries and limits. The Instant City joins and infiltrate in all forms of existing cities without dismiss them; replace them. The Instant City is pure subjectivity that gains strength and presence in the crowds of connected individuals.

A comparison of the effects of mobile device display size and orientation, and text segmentation on learning, cognitive load, and user perception in a higher education chemistry course

Karam, Angela Marie 27 August 2015 (has links)
This study aimed to understand the relationship between mobile device screen display size (laptops and smartphones) and text segmentation (continuous text, medium text segments, and small text segments) on learning outcomes, cognitive load, and user perception. This quantitative study occurred during the spring semester of 2015. Seven hundred and seventy-one chemistry students from a higher education university completed one of nine treatments in this 3x3 research design. Data collection took place over four class periods. The study revealed that learning outcomes were not affected by the mobile screen display size or orientation, nor was working memory. However, user perception was affected by the screen display size of the device, and results indicated that participants in the sample felt laptop screens were more acceptable for accessing the digital chemistry text than smartphone screens by a small margin. The study also found that neither learning outcomes, nor working memory was affected by the text segmentation viewed. Though user perception was generally not affected by text segmentation, the study found that for perceived ease of use, participants felt medium text segments were easier to learn from than either continuous or small test segments by a small margin. No interaction affects were found between mobile devices and text segmentation. These findings challenge the findings of some earlier studies that laptops may be better for learning than smartphones because of screen size, landscape orientation is better for learning than portrait orientation in small screen mobile devices, and meaningful text segments may be better for learning than non-meaningful, non-segmented, or overly segmented text. The results of this study suggest that customizing the design to the smartphone screen (as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach) improves learning from smartphones, making them equal to learning from laptops in terms of learning outcomes and cognitive load, and in some cases, user perspective. / text

Along with the smartphone’s increasing popularity around the world, there is an increasing development and popularity of power-hungry applications: applications that take advantage from these resources and may reduce the smartphones autonomy. This fact is known as one of the biggest to be solved when talking about nowadays smartphones. Considering this, many solutions were proposed and approach this topic in different ways. These solutions can be classified in two major groups: software layer solutions and hardware layer solutions. In one hand, the software layer solutions are the ones that try to reduce the smartphone’s energy drain by only changing the software that composes the smartphone. For example, by improving the Wi-Fi interface or managing the running applications of the smartphone. On the other hand, the hardware layer solutions are the ones that try to improve or increase the energy availability of the smartphone changing or improving only the physical components, for example evolving the technology regarding the batteries. This study presents an approach in software layer for this problem: a system for managing the states of the smartphone’s sensors and components, based on the user profile, aiming energy savings. This work consisted of three steps. In the first step the literature research was done and also a research of the existing solutions in the same area. In the second step the mechanism, called MyBatRecommender, composed by the server and client sides, was presented and developed for the Android operational system. In the last step some validation tests were applied aiming to verify the system efficiency. The results show that when applied to a controlled scenario, the MyBatRecommender achieves around thirty-two per cent of energy savings.

WEB SERVICES FÖR MOBILAPPLIKATIONER : Utveckling av säkra RESTful web services för mobilapplikationer / WEB SERVICES FOR MOBILE APPLICATIONS

Eriksson, Maria January 2011 (has links)
This report describes the development of a RESTful web service for mobile applications. The web service makes resources from an existing system called kompetensdatabasen ("the competence database") available. Kompetensdatabasen holds information about the capabilities of consultants and about assignments carried out at the IT consultant business Nethouse AB. The web service was developed according to the principles of REST and ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) which puts focus on making resources available. The resources are made available through the HTTP protocol and the methods associated with it. This means it was designed to use the same technologies as the world wide web. Following these principles when designing the system has been of great importance. To make sure that the service does not leak information to competing companies or violate the Personal Data Act some kind of solution for securing the service had to be implemented. A model for authentication was produced to make the system accessible only for employees of the company.
