The Atlantic novel contest: An evaluation of its function of author selection

Literary contests have been quite popular in recent years among American publishers. Regardless of their merits, such contests have raised two questions for librarians charged with responsibilities for book selection. The first is whether such award winners are of sufficient merit as to justify immediate purchase as a result of their being the recipients of the publisher's prizes, or whether such titles should have the same slow, careful screening that is set up by the library policy for other new titles. The second question is whether other titles by prize-winning authors could be justified for purchase on the grounds that the authors had been proved of merit in their production of prize-winners, or whether the works other than their prize novels should be subjected to closed scrutiny. For these questions there have been no ready answers. In order to help answer the above questions a study has been made of one publisher's contest, analyzing the Atlantic Novel Prize winners together with a brief survey of later works of the recipients of that award. Köpet av en bostadsrätt är för de flesta människor den största investering i deras liv. Som bostadsrättsinnehavare förvaltas huset och fastigheten av en bostadsrättsförening. För att finansiera driften och underhållet tar föreningen ut en avgift från bostadsrättsinnehavaren, en månadsavgift. Månadsavgiften, tillsammans med eventuella räntekostnader som uppstår om finansiering skett genom lån, utgör den sammanlagda boendekostnaden för bostadsrättsinnehavaren. Därför bör det vara av stor vikt att köparen försäkrar sig om att föreningen har god ekonomi och har skötts på ett bra sätt, för att undvika stora och oväntade höjningar av månadsavgiften vilket medför ökade boendekostnader. Den här uppsatsen syftar till att undersöka i vilken omfattning aktörer på bostadsmarknaden använder årsredovisningen som beslutsunderlag vid köpet av bostadsrätt samt att ge förslag på hur man kan göra årsredovisningen mer lättläst och förståelig. Data insamlades genom fastighetsekonomisk facklitteratur, myndigheter och organisationer som är verksamma inom området. Frågeställningarna ovan besvarades genom empiriska undersökningar i form av enkäter och intervjuer samt en jämförelsestudie av tre stycken bostadsrättsföreningar i Stockholms innerstad. Resultaten från enkäterna indikerade på att endast de med ekonomisk utbildning använde sig av och kunde tolka årsredovisningarna inför köpet av sin bostadsrätt. I de mer diskuterande intervjuerna framgick att även de med ekonomisk utbildning saknade kunskaperna som krävdes för att analysera föreningarnas årsredovisning på djupet, även om de hade större förståelse än de utan ekonomisk utbildning. Jämförelsestudien illustrerade hur nyckeltal kan användas för att analysera en bostadsrättsförenings ekonomiska status. Slutsatsen är att aktörer på bostadsrättsmarknaden utan ekonomisk utbildning inte använder sig av årsredovisningen som beslutsunderlag vid köp av bostadsrätter. De med ekonomisk utbildning använder sig av föreningens årsredovisning men saknar förmågan att analysera föreningens ekonomi på djupet. Uppsatsen föreslår att de behandlade nyckeltalen med tillhörande förklarande text bör presenteras i varje årsredovisning, förslagsvis under förvaltningsberättelsen. Det skulle medföra att samtliga aktörer på bostadsrättsmarknaden kan analysera föreningens ekonomi på djupet och försäkra sig om att göra ett välgrundat köp. / The purchase of a cooperative apartment is for most people the largest venture in their life. The monthly fee, combined with possible interest costs if the apartment was funded by a loan, make the total accommodation cost for the cooperative apartment owner. Therefore it should be of importance to analyze the economic status of the housing cooperation prior the purchase. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the extent to which buyers use the annual reports of the housing cooperatives as decision-making material for the purchase, and provide suggestions on how to make the annual report more readable and understandable. Data were collected by literature, government agencies and other organizations in the real estate economic field. The questions above were answered through empirical research in the form of questionnaires and interviews, as well as a comparative study of three housing cooperatives in the inner city of Stockholm. The questionnaires indicates that only those with economic education made use of and could interpret the annual report when buying their cooperative apartment. Growth Cycles and Paleoecology of Devonian Rugosa

<p> Solitary rugose corals of the Middle Devonian Hungry Hollow Formation exhibit annual, synodic month and periodicities of their epithecal growth lines. Annual cyclicity is poorly developed due to the slight seasonal variation of the 33°S paleolatitude. Thirteen monthly bands each with a mean of 30.38 diurnal lines comprise a Middle Devonian year of approximately 395 days. Corallite measurements yielded a monthly vertical growth rate of .377 cm. A major correlative reduction in monthly growth is apparent at approximately seven monthly bands from the apex. Environmental deterioration probably accounts for this reduction and the randomly occurring disturbance lines visible on the epithecae. Random periods of rejuvenescence in which the corallite diameter is reduced may be linked to abnormal environmental conditions. Bryozoan larvae actively settled on corallite areas which provided shelter from abrasion, water currents and light. The growth of the corallites is anisometric and exhibits no apparent relationship between monthly growth rate and diameter increase.</p> <p> The frequent occurrences of geniculate corallites in the sample are indicative of occasionally turbulent water conditions that toppled the immature corallites. Storms probably created turbulence that toppled much of the coral population with heights of 2.0-4.0 cm and resulted in subsequent geniculation. An exceptionally violent storm probably destroyed the shallow epicontinental sea habitat of the rugosa by intense wave action. The skeletal debris was transported inland and deposited unconformably on the lime mud of the carbonate platform. Recovering the Extra-Literary: The Pittsburgh Writings of Willa Cather

Willa Cather believed literature and journalism were separate and unequal genres. During her decade in Pittsburgh (1896-1906), as she gained recognition as a literary artist, she increasingly censored her early journalism and apprentice fiction. My dissertation promotes the recovery of these writings, especially the unsigned and pseudonymous pieces contained in two affiliated journals she served as an editor: Home Monthly the National Stockman and Farmer. My first chapter describes more then forty additional items from Home Monthly and the Stockman, including poetry, short fiction, and editorials. Annotated tables of contents and contributors' lists for both journals (1896-97) and maps and period photographs are offered in appendices.<br>Employing the methodology of New Historicism, my dissertation returns little regarded works to their approximate contexts of publication. Chapter 2 reads Cather's story "The Conversion of Sun Loo" (1900) as part of the debate over proselytizing the Chinese within the Library, a Pittsburgh magazine whose brief life (Spring and Summer of 1900) coincided with the Boxer rebellion in North China. "Sum Loo," it argues, is a satire upon recent events linking China and Pittsburgh's small Chinese colony.<br>The third chapter recovers a journalistic prototype for a story Cather held among her most "literary." Although Cather preferred to say "Paul's Case" (1905) was inspired by her teaching experience, she borrowed its plot from the city papers of November 1902, which reported the theft of $1,500 from the offices of the Denny Estate by two Pittsburgh boys. This chapter examines not only Cather's adaptation of extra-literary sources, but also her ambivalence toward her first career in journalism.<br>The final chapter concerns two late novellas, "Uncle Valentine" (1922) and "Double Birthday" (1929), written more than a decade after Cather's last physical visit to the city. “Prevalencia de Hidatidosis en ovinos beneficiados en el Centro de Faenamiento FRILISAC (Camal de Yerbateros de Lima) entre los años 2012-2015”

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo principal determinar la prevalencia de Hidatidosis ovina en el centro de Faenamiento FRILISAC (Camal de Yerbateros de Lima) durante los años 2012-2015 y como objetivos específicos determinar la prevalencia mensual y la prevalencia según procedencia, así como las pérdidas económicas producidas. El trabajo consistió en una investigación cuantitativa con diseño Retrospectivo, Descriptivo y Analítico. El material de estudio consistió en el análisis de las fichas de registro de beneficio mensual según especie, sexo y procedencia y del consolidado mensual de decomiso de órganos según especie. Se evaluó un total de 344073 ovinos, de ambos sexos y edades, procedentes de los departamentos de Lima, Ayacucho, Ica y Arequipa, registrados en fichas correspondientes a los años 2012-2015. La prevalencia total de Hidatidosis ovina obtenida durante los cuatro años de estudio fue de 0,32%. Los meses donde más se presentó la Hidatidosis ovina marzo, abril, mayo y diciembre. El departamento donde se obtuvo la mayor tasa de prevalencia fue el departamento de Ayacucho seguido por Lima e Ica donde se obtuvieron prevalencias más bajas, en el departamento de Arequipa no se obtuvo prevalencia alguna durante los años de estudio. El órgano más parasitado fue el pulmón. La pérdida económica total por el decomiso de órganos durante los cuatro años fue de US$ 1, 541,42 dólares. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que probablemente se están realizando programas de control por parte de los ganaderos para evitar que sus animales contraigan el parásito, por lo cual existiría un riesgo menor para la salud animal y humana en los departamentos evaluados.The present work had as main objective to determine the prevalence of ovine Hidatidosis in the center of Slaughtering FRILISAC (slaughterhouse of Herbalists of Lima) during 2012-2015 and as specific objectives to determine the monthly prevalence and provenance prevalence, as well as economic losses produced. The work consisted in a quantitative research with retrospective, descriptive and analytical design. The study material consisted of monthly benefit record sheets according to species, sex and origin and monthly consolidated of organ confiscation by species. Was evaluated A total of 344,073 sheep, of both sexes and ages, from the departments of Lima, Ayacucho, Ica and Arequipa, registered in record sheets corresponding to the years 2012 to 2015. The overall prevalence of ovine Hidatidosis obtained during the four years of study was 0.32%. The months that presented the highest prevalences of ovine Hidatidosis were march, april, may and december. The department where the highest rates of prevalence were obtained was Ayacucho followed by Lima and Ica where the lowest prevalences were obtained, in the department of Arequipa was obtained any prevalence during the study. The most parasitized organ was the lung. The total economic losess for the confiscation of organs during the four years was US $ 1, 541.42 dollars. The obtained results demonstrate that there is a probably control by farmers to keep their animals from contracting the parasite, so there is a low risk for animal and human health in the departments of ovine tested.

This thesis approaches the ideological orientation, opinion stands and the profile of the revue Národní myšlenka, which was published in the Czechoslovak Republic in years 1923- 1939. The thesis describes historical context, which revue Národní myšlenka was established in, presents the most important personalities of the editorial board of Národní myšlenka - JUDr. Vlastimil Klíma and JUDr. Ladislav Rašín, and approaches content of the selected volumes of Národní myšlenka, whose choice was done in view of important political events of Czechoslovakia. Revue Národní myšlenka was ideologically based on tthe concept of integral nationalism, was far-right, anti-german and antisocialist oriented and was closely connected with the Czechoslovak National democratic party (or more precisely with its Young generation), despite of the fact, that Národní myšlenka always defined itself strictly as the independent magazine. The thesis also contains a part describing original journalistic figure, in this thesis called glossed quotations, which was used by the editorial board of Národní myšlenka for brief and apt declaration of fundamental ideas or statements of eminent personalities of domestic and foreign politics. 上市公司每月營運情形之公告,可讓投資人瞭解各該公司經由營業活動所產生現金流量的多寡、風險與不確定性。若所傳遞之訊息對股價影響愈多,則該公告愈具有資訊內涵。   本研究採用事件研究法,來探討台灣證券交易市場民國80年至民國83年間,112家樣本公司的3896個每月營運情形公告樣本的資訊內涵。本研究以市場模式、複迴歸摸式來衡量上市公司每月營運情形公告傳避至證券交易市場的資訊有用性與價值。依本研究之研究方法與實證分析,依序獲得下列各項結論:   1. 公告時間之早晚與未預期每股營收之正負有關。亦即,當未預期每股營收為正時,上市公司會於每月十日以前提早公告此項好消息;而當未預期每股營收為負時,則會拖延至每月十日以後才公告此項壞消息。   2. 未預期每股營收為正時,除中間組之樣本群於相對日數第-7日至第2日間具有資訊內涵外,均不具有資訊內涵。因此,整體而言,該資訊的市場反應與預期的不符,經細分後,對資訊的解釋亦無多大的幫助。   3. 未預期每股營收為負時,除了全部樣本群之相對日數第1日、最小組樣本群之相對日數第-3日至第7日、中間組樣本群之相對日數第-7日、與最大組樣本群之相對日數第-6、-4、-3日以外,均具有資訊內涵。因此,整體而言,該資訊的市場反應大部份與預期的相符。然而細分之後,各組的市場反應並未符合預期的趨勢,因此,資科的細分對資訊的解釋並無多大的幫助。   4. 未預期每股營收與未預期每股營收成長率,對累積平均異常報酬率而言,均不具有統計上的顯著影響力。   5. 對整體股市而言,上市公司每月營運情形之公告,於開窗期間為相對日數第-7日至第7日之複迴歸模式一、與開窗期間為相對日數第1日至第7日之複迴歸模式三,均具有資訊內涵。

The Development Of A Building Energy Performance Evaluation Program (enad) For Architectural Design Process

Energy performance in buildings has become one of the most broadly debated subjects in contemporary architecture / and current legislation has emphasized its importance by requiring buildings to possess an energy performance certificate. Due to the technological advances in computational tools, it is possible to analyze the energy performance of buildings before construction starts / however most energy performance evaluation tools, requiring complex solid models and high technical knowledge in the field, can be used only during the post design phases. Since any design decision has an important effect on the energy performance of a building, evaluation tools should be used from the very beginning of the design process. In this dissertation, a building energy performance evaluation program, entitled the Energy performance Advisor (EnAd), was developed for evaluating the energy performance of buildings considering not only the legal framework of Turkey, but also the building design process. The program does not need advanced expertise, and was developed to be usable in any phase of the design process. The program, using the monthly calculation method of TS EN ISO 13790, was developed based on the European Union Directive on Energy Performance in Buildings (EPBD) and the current Turkish legislation on the subject. EnAd integrates the legal framework with the energy performance criterion into the building design process, while providing rapid feedback on energy performance and related legislation, and guiding the designer to improve design decisions. This dissertation has also shown the effects of building size, exposed surfaces, ventilation and infiltration, window-wall ratio, U-values, set-point temperatures and temperature differences between the outside and inside spaces on energy performance of buildings through generic case studies while searching the reasons for discrepancies between the results derived from the four evaluation tools, three of which is highly acknowledged energy performance evaluation tools. The validity, reliability, precision and usability of EnAd as a design-support tool has been proved through the usability and convergence tests conducted. Finally, the thesis has pointed out the importance of the use of energy performance evaluation tools from early stages of architectural design process to achieve higher performances as well as the roles of decision makers in this process.

Energieffektivisering av Byggnader : En kartläggning av energianvändningen på två förskolor och två skolor i Västerås med hjälp av timvärden

In the development of society towards renewable energy sources, the target in Sweden is 100% energy supply from renewable energy sources by the year 2040. This requires increased energy production from renewable, but also energy optimization of existing buildings. The housing and service sector which includes households and the public services account for about 40 % of Sweden’s total energy use. It is estimated that preschools and schools have an area of 35 million m² which have an energy savings potentials of 0,7-1 TWh in the electricity consumption and 0,9 TWh in energy use for heating. With regard to energy optimization, it is not only interesting to investigate a buildings total energy use on an annual or monthly basis, but also on shorter time intervals such hourly energy use, because of the uneven energy production of some renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. The purpose of this work is to study the energy usage for some of Västerås preschools and schools, and on the basis of it propose some energy optimization actions. To achieve this a literature study has been carried out to get knowledge about how energy usage is at preschools and schools, as well as to gain insight into what actions are appropriate to perform and how they savings look like. Other than that four objects has been studied, two preschools and two schools, one of each kind were chosen amongst those with the highest energy usage among Västerås city’s preschools and schools and one of each kind amongst those with the lowest usage. The annual energy usage have been calculated and been compared to the actual usage, and the monthly and hourly energy usage for district heating have been studied as well as the electricity usage along the day for different periods. The studied periods and energy usage shows that the energy usage, both for the monthly and hourly,  for the district heating moves with regards to the outdoor temperature with some exceptions. As for the electricity usage it shows that the energy usage is even with some exceptions and there is a difference between different outdoor temperature intervals. Some conclusions could be drawn among others that the objects with higher energy usage where older buildings and the objects with lower energy usage where newer ones. There are some energy optimizations actions for the objects which would lower the energy consumption, both for district heating and electricity usage.

Crous & Braun to the carbendazim fungicide were assessed in this study. A methodology for assessing the pathogen resistance to the carbendazim fungicide, of wide use in Brazilian agriculture, was developed at Embrapa Rice and Beans, in Santo Antônio de Goiás. The test was based on P. griseola conidia suspensions at concentrations of 103, 104 and 105 spores mL-1, fungicide concentrations of the at 1 ppm, 10 ppm and 100 ppm per mL-1at the presence of Alamar Blue dye. Alamar Blue is an indicator of cell activity, where the metabolism of viable cells corresponds to a higher dye reduction and a colorimetric reaction. The experimental results were assessed with the support a spectrophotometer to quantify the amount of reduced dye, and thus, to verify the pathogen’s resistance to the fungicide. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the method and greater resistance of the isolate Pg 669 to carbendazim in comparison to isolates Pg 410 and Pg 786. Furthermore, the recommended methodology consisted on fungicide at 100 ppm, 1 × 104 conidia mL-1and 40 hours of incubation at 25ºC. Another study considered the relationships between angular leaf spot severity, crop yield and climate variables to estimate the impacts of monthly rainfall and the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon on the disease and yield losses in crops established in the spring/summer (November-February) or fall (February-May) season, in crops established in the spring/summer (November-February) or fall (February-May) season, in different Brazilian municipalities, between 2001 and 2010. The disease data was retrieved from experiments of value, cultivation and use (VCU), conducted by Embrapa and its partners, with the cultivars Pérola, BRS Grafite e BRS Requinte. These tests were carried out in a randomized block design with three replications. The results showed differences (p<0.05) between cultivars and between planting seasons. By means of regression analysis, an inversely proportional relationship between yield and disease severity was found. The principal components analysis, in turn, revealed that ENSO influences differently disease severity and crop yield according to the location of the experiments in the Brazilian states of Goiás, Paraná and Pernambuco. These results provide new evidences about the efficiency of commercially used fungicides for angular leaf spot management, demonstrate the impacts of the disease on a regional scale, and support predictive models of disease and risk assessments of climate change on the development of crops. / Este trabalho avaliou a influência de variáveis climáticas sobre a mancha angular do feijoeiro comum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), e a reação de seu agente causal Pseudocercospora griseola (Sacc.) Crous & Braun ao fungicida carbendazim. Na Embrapa Arroz e Feijão (Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO) foi desenvolvida uma metodologia para avaliação da resistência do patógeno ao fungicida carbendazim, de amplo uso na agricultura brasileira. Foram avaliadas suspensões de conídios de P. griseola em concentrações de 103, 104 e 105 esporos mL-1 com concentrações do fungicida a 1 ppm, 10 ppm e 100 ppm mL-1, junto ao corante Alamar Blue. Este corante função é um indicador da atividade celular presente, onde maior a atividade celular corresponde a uma maior redução do corante, o que resulta em uma reação colorimétrica. A análise do experimento foi feita com o auxílio de um espectrofotômetro, para quantificar a quantidade de corante reduzida e assim verificar a resistência do patógeno ao fungicida testado. Os resultados demonstraram a viabilidade do método e a maior resistência do isolado Pg 669 ao carbendazim, em relação aos Pg 410 e Pg 786, e recomendação para estes ensaios com o fungicida a 100 ppm, 1 × 104 esporos mL- 1, 10 l de Alamar Blue em um intervalo de incubação ótimo de 40 horas a 25ºC. Em outro estudo, foi realizado um levantamento da severidade da mancha angular, da produtividade da cultura e de variáveis climáticas para se estimar os impactos da precipitação mensal e do fenômeno El-Niño Oscilação Sul (ENSO) sobre a doença e as perdas de rendimento nas safras das águas e da seca, em diferentes municípios brasileiros, entre 2001 e 2010. Os dados foram provenientes de ensaios de valoração, cultivo e uso (VCU), conduzidos pela Embrapa e seus parceiros, com as cultivares Pérola, BRS Grafite e BRS Requinte, na safra das águas (novembro-fevereiro) e, eventualmente, da seca (fevereiro-maio). A partir das análises realizadas foram observadas diferenças (p<0,05) entre as cultivares e entre as épocas de plantio. Por meio da análise de regressão, foi observada uma relação inversamente proporcional entre produtividade e severidade da doença. A análise de componentes principais, por sua vez, revelou que o fenômeno ENSO influencia diferentemente a severidade da doença e produtividade da cultura conforme a localização dos plantios nos estados de Goiás, Paraná e Pernambuco. Estes resultados fornecem novos subsídios sobre avaliar a eficiência dos fungicidas utilizados comercialmente para o manejo da mancha angular, demonstram dos impactos da doença em escala regional e subsidiam o desenvolvimento de modelos de previsão de doenças e avaliações de risco de mudanças climáticas sobre o desenvolvimento de cultivos do feijão comum
