Det konstnärliga servisglaset : En kvalitativ och kvantitativ undersökning av servisglas från Orrefors – mellan 1960 och 1990 / The artistic stemware : A qualitative and quantitative study of stemware from Orrefors – between 1960 and 1990

Berglund, Pia January 2022 (has links)
This essay explores the correlation between the design of stemware and the production of artistically produced glassware at the Swedish glassworks Orrefors, between the years of 1960 and 1990. The aim of this investigation is to see in what way the artistic glass has influenced the design of the stemware. Furthermore, the essay discusses in what way this change in design can be due to factors like competition with cheaper stemware from IKEA, the aesthetic trends of different decades and the economic situations of the glassworks. This essay also investigates in what way this change in design and aesthetics correlates to a change in pricing of the exclusive stemware produced at Orrefors. These subjects have been investigated using both a qualitative and a quantitative method, with the aim of understanding their correlations. The result of this study has shown that the artistically produced glassware has had a noticeable impact on the design of stemware, particularly from the mid 70´s and onwards. This is concluded to be due to a combination of factors, such as the ones stated above.

William Morris and the Kelmscott Chaucer: Design, Production, and Conservation Analysis

Allen, Gretchen 01 January 2014 (has links)
William Morris’s Kelmscott Press was founded specifically for the purpose of producing handmade printed works in a rapidly industrializing age. The techniques he and his confederates employed to make the Kelmscott books resulted in beautiful publications with remarkable material fortitude, as exemplified in the Press’s masterwork, “The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer Now Newly Imprinted”. This thesis examines the condition of the copy of the Kelmscott Chaucer in the Scripps rare book collection from a book conservator’s perspective to analyze the connection between William Morris’s personal philosophies, his resulting artistic decisions, and the longevity of the book as an art object.

THE EFFECTS OF bFGF TREATMENT IN THE AGED BRAIN FOLLOWING TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Zeigler, Michael 11 June 2010 (has links)
The mature mammalian brain continually generates new neurons in the subventricular zone and hippocampus throughout life. Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus is associated with hippocampal-dependent learning and memory function. During aging, this endogenous neurogenic potential is reduced which is accompanied by decreased cognitive function seen in the aging population. We have previously found that the injured adult brain shows heightened levels of endogenous neurogenesis and this response is associated with innate cognitive recovery. We have also found that basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a potent neurotrophic polypeptide, can enhance injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis and improve cognitive recovery following TBI. In this study, we administered bFGF into the lateral ventricle of aged rats following TBI and assessed the effect of bFGF treatment on hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive recovery in aged animals. Specifically, male Fisher-344 rats at the age of 20 months received intraventricular infusion of bFGF for 7 days through osmotic mini-pump immediately following a moderate lateral fluid percussion injury. To label cell proliferation, animals received daily single i.p. BrdU injections for 6 days beginning 48 hr after injury. One group of animals was perfused at 1 wk after injury to assess cell proliferation. Another group of animals was first assessed for cognitive performance using the Morris water maze (MWM) at 21-25 days post-injury, then sacrificed at 4 weeks after injury to examine differentiation of newly generated cells. Brain sections were sliced and immunostained for BrdU, early neuronal marker doublecortin (DCX) and other cell type specific markers. Results showed that at 1 week post-injury, injured-aged animals infused with either vehicle or bFGF had a significantly higher number of cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus compared to sham animals. However, cell proliferation in the bFGF-infused animals was not significantly higher than vehicle-treated animals. Nevertheless, the number of DCX-labeled early stage neurons was significantly higher in the injured bFGF-treated animals than in vehicle-treated sham and injured animals. In MWM tests, unlike what we have observed in bFGF-treated younger animals, injured aged rats treated with bFGF did not show improved cognitive function. Furthermore, at 4 weeks post-injury, higher numbers of BrdU-labeled proliferative cells persisted in both injured groups, many of these cells labeled with glial and inflammatory cell markers. Collectively, the current data suggests that bFGF can enhance neurogenesis in the injured-aged hippocampus; however, this effect is not sufficient to improve functional recovery of aged rats following TBI due to the profound injury-induced inflammatory response.

Inhibition of injury-induced cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus impairs cognitive recovery following traumatic brain injury

Daniels, Teresa 27 April 2012 (has links)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a robust cellular proliferative response among neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/NPCs) in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. This proliferative effect is thought to contribute to the innate cognitive recovery observed following TBI. Inhibition of hippocampal neurogenesis impairs cognitive function. Furthermore, enhancement of injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis via intraventricular administration of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) improves cognitive function in animals following TBI. In this experiment, we investigated the direct association between injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive recovery utilizing an antimitotic agent, arabinofuranosyl cytidine (Ara-C). In this study, adult rats received a moderate lateral fluid percussion injury (LFPI). Immediately following injury, Ara-C with or without bFGF was infused into the lateral ventricle via an osmotic mini-pump for 7 days. To label dividing cells animals received daily single injections of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) at 2-7 days post-injury. To examine the effect of Ara-C on cell proliferation, a group of animals was sacrificed at 1 week following injury. Brain sections were immunostained for BrdU and cell type specific markers, and the number of BrdU+ cells in the hippocampus was assessed by stereology. To examine the effect of inhibition of injury-induced cell proliferation on cognitive recovery, animals were assessed on Morris water maze tasks (MWM) either at 21 to 25 days or 56-60 days post-injury. We found that post-injury Ara-C treatment significantly reduces injury-induced cell proliferation in the DG and abolishes the innate cognitive recovery on MWM performance at 56-60 days post-injury. Additionally, Ara-C diminishes bFGF enhanced cell proliferation in the DG and cognitive recovery following TBI. These results support the causal relationship between injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive functional recovery. Our studies suggest that the post-TBI neurogenic response is an endogenous repair mechanism that contributes to the restoration of hippocampal function post-injury.

Modélisation de la demande énergétique des bâtiments à l'échelle urbaine : contribution de l'analyse de sensibilité à l'élaboration de modèles flexibles / Modeling energy demand of buildings at urban scale

Garcia Sanchez, David 29 October 2012 (has links)
Urban scale is now considered as one of the most relevant scales to face energy and climate challenges. Specific needs for knowledge, decision making tools and evaluation are identified at urban scale. Modelling energy demand from residential buildings is one key aspect, priorto energy retrofitting of existing building asset or to valorisation of local energy sources. Diversity of local contexts, stake holder goals and data availability lead to search flexible models, with ability to produce information for different applications, from alternative input data sets, combining different types of basic models (namely both physical and statistical ones), according to user needs. The present work is exploring the potential of bottom-up approaches, based on engineering models, developed originally for isolated buildings. These models are extrapolated for the complete set of buildings in a city or neighbourhood, based on building archetypes. Two key questions tackled are the selection of suitable archetypes and the reconstitution of relevant input data, statistically representative for the area of interest Sensitivity analysis techniques have been applied to a thermal simulation programme (ESP-r), particularly the Morris elementary effects method. A non-linear response of the model has been emphasized, caused by scattering of input parameters and interaction effects. The most influencing and interacting parameters have been identified. They concern the buildings themselves, their environment and the inhabitants. Data collection or statistical reconstitution must be concentrated in priority to these main parameters. A model of the heat demand at a neighbourhood scale has been developed and tested on the sector St-Félix in Nantes. It is called MEDUS (Modelling Energy Demand at Urban Scale). Application is based on three building archetypes. Census data (INSEE) available at the sector scale are the main input data. Results are analyzed both to check archetype relevancy and to study a possible application for evaluating actions at sector scale, such as energy retrofitting.

A walk through Luxury land

EDBERG, JOHAN January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is about how high level brands communicate their brands to the audience. The thesis consists of analyses of the identity and images of two luxury brands, Gucci and Burberry and two premium brands, Lacoste and Morris. The purpose is to clarify the identity of the brands, by carrying out analysis as well as interviews with key personnel. Furthermore there is an analysis of the advertisement images for the respective brands in order to clarify the brands images. Finally there is an analysis of the alleged conformity between identity and image and also a section about the luxury and premium brand differs, or rather not differ from each other in the identity-image connection. The methods used are Aakers identity system, to establish the respective brands identity. An image analysis with inspiration from Panfosky and leading semoticians are also used to scrutinize the advertising images from the Spring/Summer 2010 campaigns. The results show that there is indeed a good conformation among the brands when it comes to the identity-image connection. The brands identities are thorough and well articulated and the advertisement images are well executed with the identity well in mind which makes for that the campaigns are contributing in building a good brand image among the target audience. There are several areas where the premium brand advertising images congregate with the ones of the luxury brand. / Program: Magisterutbildning i fashion management med inriktning modemarknadsföring

Motor memory : reworking the past : a thesis (or dissertation, etc.) presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Titheridge, Johnathon Daniel January 2010 (has links)
Taking my own personal history as a starting point this paper will look at how we inherit culture and in turn shape it through the stories and objects that drive its formation. This extends into how these objects proliferate within our culture and the way in which the passing of History impacts on the way we view them and as a consequence ourselves as individuals and as a group. Identity is then passed on through generations through the act of storytelling, and this process is integral to this research paper. This is also a personal journey, taking place in varying sites, from a rusting car hulk in a back yard in North Canterbury, to a University in Wellington and another rusted car, which has gone through a strange restoration. The Morris Minor has been embraced as a narcissistic object that I have chosen to double in order to explore my individual and wider national cultural history and identity. One of the key themes of this inherited identity is largely based around Nostalgia for an ideal past. This ideal is a fiction, a layering of intended futures as well as a selective past. This works in the same way as the modern artistic preoccupation with gothic histories, but instead of a positive ideal we have the creation of a basement of horrors that lurks beneath the surface. Be it positivist idealism or Gothic inversion, one way of focusing on the way these fictions differ markedly from the reality of the objects existence, is to show the artifice of the stories told by enhancing the components of the story that are already exaggerated, for the Morris Minor this means getting as far away from its existence as a rusting hulk in the backyard as possible. The longing for a past that may or may not exist, is less important as existing in reality but instead for what these fictions supply in their retelling. The concept of the Uncanny is integral to this retelling of memory, in that through a memories reanimation it can only approximate the original event leaving gaps for circumspection and invention. This retelling necessitates a reorientation in the relationship between the teller of the tale and the listener and between the viewer and the object viewed. The research culminates in the alteration of a Morris Minor to appear as one continuous surface. The intention of which is to engage with the differing versions of the objects past through taking an active part in its reconstruction as artwork with the aim of reassessment not only of my individual approach to the object but also the viewers.
