Ethnologie du quotidien des "passionnés de moto" : construction d'un être au monde par l'investissement d'une machine / Day-to-day ethnology of motorcycle enthusiasts

Oudin, François 16 June 2009 (has links)
The argument developed in this PhD thesis is that considering the use of motorbikes as a symbol for risk taking reduces the meaning of what bikers call « passion ». It is therefore suggested to take a different view and - instead of studying extreme aspects - take interest in the bikers' daily routine by means of long-term participating observation. From the taking of the motorcycling license to regular bike riding, attention is focused on the banality and diversity of the life of those who call themselves « motorbike enthusiasts ». An ethnology of bikers, true to their lives, is thus being sketched. Thanks to this approach, it has been possible to collect utterances and observe practices that go beyond the sole issue of risk, through the biker's desire of belonging to a specific world. The involvement of the machine - interface between men and world - is coupled with a universe the meaning of which is little known. It is made of know-how, bodily techniques and « bikers' values » that give sense to the statements and actions of the encountered bikers. To give sense here means both articulating a possible world organization and questioning it. Beyond the stereotyped image of bikers, their use of a machine is a way to state and reorganize fundamental anthropological oppositions that allow interaction with our environment. By their practice and the motivations to their actions, bikers reinterpret the fundaments of man/woman, savage/servant, risk/security and life/death relations. Acting in this universe that temporarily features beings belonging to an alternative world, they express what in their eyes is an accomplished Human being.

Subsidized by the etnographic method, this work was developed through participant observation of a moto-taxi stand, between November of 2012 and August of 2013. The stand XXX, located at the Venancio Neiva St. - city downtown, belongs to the "white motorbikes pilots", i.e. the ones that are registered at the city's Traffic and Public Transportation Office (STTP-CG). With the objective of capturing the diverse situations that can be found in the daily lives of those workers, this research listens to what moto-taxi pilots have to say, considering the conditions that drove them to join this system and their relationships with their families, customers, associates, colleagues, employers, companies and public agents. We aimed on perceiving the tensions and conflicts that rise due to the daily relationship between "freedom" - which main representation would justify their stay in such a though job, and the restrictions to their activities, which are commonly associated to the risk intrinsically related with their job, to the urban violence, to traffic regulation, to the embarrassment by the close relationship with the costumer and the stereotypes that those workers are subject to.

Literature shows that HIV/AIDS greatly affects the self-esteem of HIV/AIDS directly affected learners (these affected learners are either directly infected, or one or both parents are or had been infected). Studies also show that appropriate motor activities can have a positive influence on a child's self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an appropriate motor development programme on the large muscle skills and the self-esteem of 4 to 6 year old HIV/AIDS directly-affected learners. Eight gross motor and perceptual motor skills, as well as self-esteem was evaluated among 28 directly-affected HIV/AIDS (HIV/AIDS-infected as well as - affected) learners in a pre-primary school for terminally sick children in Promosa, a township of Potchefstroom, South Africa. Evaluation took place before and after the implementation of a 12-week long appropriate large muscle development programme. A co-variance analysis (ANCOVA) was done on post-test scores to correct possible differences between pre-test scores in order to achieve a statistical more significant comparison between the experimental and control groups. The motor scores as well as the self-esteem scores of the experimental group showed statistically significant (p≤0.05) improvements after the programme, in contrast with the scores of the control group which showed no significant improvements after completion of the large muscle development programme. These improvements entailed certain fundamental locomotor and balance skills, and self-perceived competence with reference to certain movement skills, as well as peer acceptance. The results imply that by improving the gross motor and perceptual motor skills of HIV/AIDS directly-affected learners by means of an appropriate motor development programme, the self-esteem and related aspects of these learners may be enhanced. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Drone Movement Control using Gesture Recognition from Wearable Devices

Dadi, Venkata Sireesha 23 October 2018 (has links)
Gesture Recognition is a new and upcoming trend that is being widely used in wearable devices and mobile handheld devices. The sensors like Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart rate monitor, Barometer and Ambient Light are mostly being included within the device to detect the static or continuous motion, rotational velocity, heartbeat rate of the user, pressure and light conditions for the device respectively. Implementing algorithms to capture the readings of these sensors and implementing them in a necessary way allows a user to use the wearable devices for a wide variety of applications. One such application is controlling Drone that takes user input to determine their motion. A Drone can accept signals from a combination of computer and a radio dongle and would fly according to the accepted commands. The wearable device can detect the motion of the wearer's hand when moved left, right, up, down etc using the Gyroscope sensor. This information can be used to process and send the signals to the Drone to enable wireless and gesture-based movement control.

ABSTRACT The Master Dissertation presented here refers to the research that aims to understand the relationships between the territorial identities, in terms of everyday urban life, and the "new urbanity" in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. For this work, which consists in a case report, the clipping of analysis is linked to the groups of motorcyclists that are associated in Motorcycle Clubs (M.C.s). The choice of motorcyclist's clusters of identity was made due to the personal interest of the researcher by cultural manifestations that express ideals of culture that are different if compared to the hegemonic culture imposed by various spheres of power, such as the media power and the industry of carnival power, in Salvador. Moreover, the choice reveals manifestations of an aggregate of identity that has diverse characteristics, based on Haesbaert (2007), with respect to the continuum that this author presents characterizing the identities since the "multiterritoriality" to "territorial seclusion". This, in turn, reinforces segregation and the closing of the manifestations of identity. Segregation here is understood by Correa (1989), as characterized by physical and cultural individuality, resulting from the competition process that creates impersonal spaces of domination of different social groups leading them to a "territorial seclusion" as in the case of certain groups of motorcyclists. On the other hand, the "multiterritoriality" is characterized by "hybrid identities" that are highly influenced by the increased mobility of populations, which is mainly a feature of some other groups of motorcycle riders who are more open to cultural exchange and flexibility in the materialization of the territory. In view of this differentiation of aggregates of identity since the continuum proposed by Haesbaert (2007), I had the opportunity to observe and understand the different manifestations of different groups of riders from the experiences of lived space. This fact contributes to the understanding and enrichment of the reflections of the constitution of territorialities since territorial identities. The understanding of the creation of the urban territorialities in Salvador also begins since the discussions on "new urbanity", proposed by Carlos (1997). The "new urbanity" materializes itself in space and takes place in everyday life in the big cities, enabling that the emergence / growth / disappearance of the manifestations of identity in contemporary city leads from the ideas of urban social segregation and the increasingly striking trend of the isolation of individuals, by competition and individuality. This happens even if there is a dialectical movement in the sense of complementarity, which via a joint of possible coexistence leads the development of several groups of identity. Keywords: identity, territory, Motorcycle Clubs (M.C.s), new urbanity.

Cecone, Eduardo Christiano January 2016 (has links)
Orientador: Prof. Dr. Douglas Alves Cassiano / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC. / Recent studies indicate that, before the value of the electricity tariff growth, has considered the use of diesel moto-generator groups (GMG) diesel as an alternative to the supply of electricity by the utilities, targeting more competitive financial conditions and ensure meet demand and no supply interruption. To use the GMG is necessary to consider the aspects: technical, environmental and financial. This study aimed to techno-financial analysis of the diesel moto-generator group, in response to demand for electricity of a Higher Education Institution (HEI) as well as the impacts and consequences of use, making use of computer simulation. Performed simulations using the software Homer Energy involving the use of the diesel moto-generator set operating with diesel, biodiesel and fuel mixtures B5, B7, B10 and B20, in peak hours and off in existing plant in Santo André campus of the University Foundation Federal ABC. It was concluded that, from a technical point of view, the existing GMG has full capacity to meet the electricity demand considered. With respect to emissions, the use of GMG would be more aggressive to the environment that the purchase of electricity by the licensee, regardless of the fuel used. Financially, the operation of GMG presents more costly than the provision by the concessionaire, considering the current values. Kept the other conditions and the incidence of red flag tariff, if the purchase price of the fuel mixture reaches less than or equal to R $ 1.72 / her use of GMG would be feasible in connection with the provision of public services and the value achieving less than or equal to R $ 0.40 / l would be financially viable its use as a sole source of electricity, while considering the non-levy tariff red flag if the purchase price of the fuel mixture reaches equal or lesser value to R $ 1.55 / her use of GMG would be feasible in connection with the provision of public services and the value reaches less than or equal to R $ 0.34 / l would be financially viable its use as a sole source of electricity.
