The influence of Morphology on the Transport and Mechanical Properties of Polyethylene

Neway, Bereket January 2003 (has links)
The sorption/desorption behaviour of n-hexane in high molarmass linear polyethylene (PE) and branched PEs with 0.39 and5.09 hexyl branches per 100 main chain C atoms andcrystallinities between 4 and 82% at 298 K has been studied.Crystal core contents determined by Raman spectroscopy werealways lower than those determined by density measurements. Then-hexane solubilities in the copolymers depended in anon-linear manner on the content of penetrable polymercomponent and were lower for homogeneous copolymers than forheterogeneous copolymers at the same contents of penetrablecomponent. The solubility of hexane in the linear PE sampleswas proportional to the volume fraction of the penetrablepolymer and the solubility was low in comparison with that ofthe branched PE of the same crystallinity. TheCohen-Turnbull-Fujita (CTF) free volume theory was capable ofdescribing the desorption process in the PEs studied. Theconcentration dependence of the thermodynamic diffusivitypredicted by the CTF free volume theory was confirmed by thedata obtained by the differential method, and the differencesbetween the results obtained by the integral and differentialmethods were within the margins of experimental error. Thedependence of the fractional free volume of the penetrablephases on the phase composition suggests that mass transporttakes place from the liquid-like component to the interfacialcomponent and that the penetrant molecules are trapped at theinterfacial sites. The linear PE samples showed a physicallyrealistic trend with a decrease in the geometrical impedancefactor (t) with decreasing degree of crystallinity, whereas theopposite trend was obtained for the copolymers. The decrease int with increasing crystallinity in the copolymers may beexplained by the presence of wide crystal lamellae in the lowcrystallinity samples. A novel melt-extrusion method was used to createcircumferential chain orientation in pipes of crosslinked PE.The microstructure of the pipes was characterized usingdifferential scanning calorimetry (DSC), density measurements,X-ray diffraction, infrared dichroism and contractionmeasurements. The mechanical properties were assessed byuniaxial tensile tests. The maximum degree of circumferentialorientation was obtained at the inner wall of the orientedpipe. The oriented pipe material exhibited a 5-15% higherdegree of crystallinity and a greater crystal thickness thanconventionally crosslinked pipe. The circumferential and axialmoduli of the oriented, crosslinked pipe were greater than thecorresponding moduli of the non-oriented crosslinked pipe. Blends of single-site materials of linear PE andethyl-branched PE were prepared using solution- and melt-mixingmethods. The thermal properties of the blends were studied byDSC and results obtained by the two mixing methods werecompared. Data obtained for heats of melting andcrystallization, melting and crystallization peak temperaturesand melting and crystallization temperature profiles wereessentially the same for the samples obtained by the two mixingmethods. The heat associated with the high temperature meltingpeak of the blend samples obtained by both preparation methodsafter crystallization at 398 K was higher than that of thelinear polyethylene included in the blends, suggesting that apart of the branched polyethylene crystallized at 398 K. Key words:n-Hexane diffusion, polyethylene, free volume, solubility, sorption, desorption, mechanical properties, orientation, thermal properties, blend.

Sorption of organic vapors by copolymers of poly (styrene-butadiene) using a piezoelectric microbalance

Upadhyayula, Anant K. 01 January 2005 (has links)
Thickness shear mode (TSM) sensors, also known as quartz crystal micro-balances (QCM) are a class of acoustic wave sensors that have been used for gas phase sensing. In this thesis this device is used to measure vapor-liquid equilibrium data for copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene) at 294K. Copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene) with varying percentages of styrene (85%, 45% and 21 %) were studied with benzene, n-hexane, dichloroethane and chloroform as solvents. Literature data for pure polystyrene/benzene and polystyrene/chloroform and polybutadiene/benzene were obtained to complement the measured data. Obtained experimental data were fit with a modified Flory-Huggins model and compared with the predictions of three models (UNIFAC-FV, Entropic-FV, and GK-FV). Flory-Huggins model gave a good quantitative fit for the solvent activities in the copolymer solutions.

Influência de solventes na disposição cinética e no metabolismo enantiosseletivos do verapamil em ratos / Influence of solvents on the kinetic disposition and enantioselective metabolism of verapamil in rats

Mateus, Fabiano Henrique 20 August 2007 (has links)
Verapamil (VER) is a chiral compound which is commercialized as a racemic mixture of the (+)-(R)-VER and (-)-(S)-VER enantiomers. VER is biotransformed into norverapamil (NOR) and other metabolites through CYP-dependent pathways. Toluene and n-hexane are organic solvents that can alter the metabolism of CYP-dependent drugs. The present study investigated the stereoselectivity in the pharmacokinetics of racemic VER administered to rats at a dose of 10 mg kg-1 and of its metabolite NOR. In addition, the influence of n-hexane and toluene on the kinetic disposition of the (+)-(R) and (-)-(S)-VER and (R)- and (S)-NOR enantiomers was analyzed in animals exposed by nose-only inhalation to n-hexane at concentrations of 88, 176 and 352 mg/m3 and to toluene at concentrations of 94, 188 and 376 mg/m3. The VER and NOR enantiomers were separated on a Chiralpak® AD chiral phase column and analyzed by LC-MS/MS (m/z = 441.3->165.5 for the NOR enantiomers and m/z 455.3->165.5 for the VER enantiomers). Pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using a monocompartmental model. The pharmacokinetics of VER was stereoselective in control rats not treated with the solvents, with plasma accumulation of the (-)-(S)-VER eutomer (AUC0-? = 250.8 vs 120.4 ng mL-1 h; P<=0.05, Wilcoxon test). The (S)-NOR metabolite was also found to accumulate in plasma of control animals, with an S/R AUC0-? ratio of 1.5. The pharmacokinetic parameters AUC0-?, Cl/F, Vd/F and t1/2 obtained for the (-)-S-VER, (+)-(R)-VER, (S)-NOR and (R)-NOR enantiomers were not altered by nose-only exposure to n-hexane at concentrations of 88, 176 and 352 mg/m3 or to toluene at concentrations of 94, 188 and 376 mg/m3 (P<=0.05), Kruskal-Wallis test). However, exposure to 176 and 352 mg/m3 n-hexane and to 94, 188 and 376 mg/m3 toluene resulted in the loss of enantioselectivity observed for the control group.

No. of bitstreams: 1 3706.pdf: 2821060 bytes, checksum: 5975ad59eeeedfbd6e16578292306171 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-01 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / The objective of this study was to verify the influence of the Si/Al ratio (11.5, 15.0, 25.0, 40.0 and 140.0) in zeolite ZSM-5 in the conversion, activity, selectivity and stability as bifunctional catalysts (Pt/H-ZSM-5) applied to the isomerization reaction of n-hexane. To prepare the bifunctional catalysts, initially the zeolites were submitted, successively, to ion exchange with ammonium cations, ion exchange cations with platinum, calcination and activation process. From the results of the isomerization of n-hexane, it was observed that with the increase of the Si/Al ratio, that is, decreasing the amount of aluminum, there was a reduction in activity and conversion. This is due to decrease the number of acid sites present, responsible to isomerize the carbocation generated in these sites. In contrast, the increase of the Si/Al ratio leads to a better selectivity to the formation of isomers. Among the catalysts, the Pt/H-ZSM-5 (15.0) showed the best result of conversion and activity. In order to compare the Pt/H-ZSM-5 catalysts, the reaction was carried out using the isomerization catalyst Pt/H-Beta (9.0). This catalyst had the best result that all the others, this result may possibly be due to increased acidity of the material and its morphological characteristics, such as type and diameter of pores etc. and/or the crystallite size of zeolites used.

Santos, Claudia Regina dos 04 September 2000 (has links)
N-hexane is a solvent used in industries, and can cause peripheral neuropathy. The bioindicator in the biological monitoring of workers exposed to n-hexane is the 2,5-hexanedione (2,5HD). This study was developed in order to validate a method for 2,5HD analysis in urine by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector considering two types of sample preparing with and without acid hydrolysis. The chosen technique was performed with HP1 column measured 15m by 530µm inner bore. Helio was used as the carrier gas at a flow rate of 4,2mL/min. The detection and quantification limits were respectively 0,05 and 0,1 mg/L. A linear relationship (r = 0,999) was observed in the range from 0,1-20mg/mL. The average recovery was 98-102%, with precision and accuracy. To apply this method, 87 samples from shoe factory workers were analyzed (52 exposed group and 35 control group). The samples with acid hydrolysis show levels ten times higher than samples without acid hydrolysis. This difference was statistically significant (p<0,0001), but this levels weren\'t higher than the Biological Exposure Index (BEI) were recommended value is 5mg/g creatinine, in any of the analyzed samples. These results reveal that the validated method has application for biological monitoring, and the samples with acid hydrolysis showed rates higher than the samples without hydrolysis.

Using sources such as hydrated alumina (pseudobohemita), phosphoric acid, silica gel, water, as well as, different types of organic structural templates, such as: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr), di-isopropylamine (DIPA), di-n- propylamine (DNPA) and tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEOS), for the respective samples. During the preparation of the silicoaluminophosphates, the crystallization process of the samples occurred at a temperature of approximately 200 ? C, ranging through periods of 18-72 h, when it was possible to obtain pure phases for the SAPOs. The materials were furthermore washed with deionized water, dried and calcined to remove the molecules of the templates. Subsequently the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), absorption spectroscopy in the infrared region (FT-IR), specific surface area and thermal analysis via TG/DTG. The acidic properties were determined using adsorption of n-butylamine followed by programmed termodessorption. These methods revealed that the SAPO samples showed a typically weak to moderate acidity. However, a small amount of strong acid sites was also detected. The deactivation of the catalysts was conducted by artificially coking the samples, followed by n-hexane cracking reactions in a fixed bed with a continuous flow micro-reactor coupled on line to a gas chromatograph. The main products obtained were: ethane, propane, isobutene, n-butane, n-pentane and isopentane. The Vyazovkin (model-free) kinetics method was used to determine the catalysts regeneration and removal of the coke / Diferentes tipos de catalisadores heterog?neos do tipo silicoaluminofosf?tico, (SAPO-5, SAPO-11, SAPO-31, SAPO-34 e SAPO-41), peneiras moleculares com estrutura: AFI, AEL, ATO, CHA e AFO, respectivamente, foram sintetizados pelo m?todo hidrot?rmico.

Synthesis of new zeolitic materials for hydroisomerization of n-alkanes by bifunctional catalysis to obtain medium distillates (C10-C14) / Synthèse de nouveaux matériaux zéolitiques pour l'hydroisomérisation des alcanes par catalyse bifonctionnelle en vue de l’obtention de distillat moyen (C12-C14)

Sammoury, Hussein 28 November 2017 (has links)
Two commercial nanocrystal *BEA zeolites with different textural properties and a microcrystal synthesized *BEA zeolite, were desilicated using different alkaline treatment; classical in presence of Noah alone, or incorporated with a pore directing agent. All parent zeolites and some selected desilicated samples were chosen for catalytic cracking of n-hexane, where no significant improvement of n-hexane conversion was observed after desilication. To investigate the impact of desilication on the hyrdoisomerization of n-C10, all parent and the some selected desilicated zeolites were transformed into their bifunctional form by platinum loading. The improvement of the textural properties by desilication using the different pore directing agents, was not always the cause behind an increase or decrease in the activity and selectivity of the catalyst, but rather was more the location of the Pt particles and their predicted distance from the acidic sites. However, the synergetic effect of both the textural and bifunctional characteristics was positive. Tests on hydroisomerization of n-C12 and n-C14 to investigate the impact of chain length were done. In the nanocrystal series, a special phenomenon on n-C12 appeared where the isomerization yield seemed to be less than that obtained on n-C10 and n-C14, suggesting that this would be due the confinement effect, which was shown to be more effective in case of n-C12. The microcrystal series showed an improvement of the activity over all the catalysts in case of n-C14 transformation, but a decrease in isomers selectivity as observed due to probable diffusional limitations within the channels of these series catalysts.
