For non-profit organizations, volunteers play an important role in terms of participation and dedication to serve the organizations’ purposes and objectives. Unpaidness and flexibility are the most significant characteristics of voluntary work. Thus, a challenge for NPOs management is to increase volunteers’ commitment level. In this immersive research project, the aim is to design for a higher commitment level of volunteers in NPOs. The external collaboration is Hjärta till Hjärta, an aid NPO which runs several second hand stores. The context of the research is based on the volunteers' experience in one of the second hand stores in Linköping, Sweden. Seven semi-structured interviews and an immersive study were conducted, where volunteers’ motivation, comparison between voluntary work and professional career, trust building and needed change were indepthly investigated. The insights drew a pain point of rigid routines and mindsets from professionalism misfit the voluntary environment and a need of designing a warm and inspiring volunteer experience. Three activities were developed as possible solutions for building a warmer and more inspiring volunteering experience.

Developing a Statewide Infant Mental Health Association: From Grassroots Collaborations to Non-profit Organization StatusMoser, Michelle, Todd, Janet 10 November 2018 (has links)
For six years, under the informal leadership of a few professionals committed to fostering the healthy social and emotional development of infants and young children in Tennessee, a group of passionate individuals and agencies came together on a bimonthlly and subsequently quarterly basis for the purpose of building relationships, identifying existing resources and opportunities, and beginning to identify what is needed to address the mental health needs of the birth through age 5 population. From the initial meeting of 25 or so individuals, the attendance and agency representation steadily grew and the group’s identity as a valuable initiative was established. In this presentation, the expansion of this informal grassroots initiative into a formal non-profit corporation receiving funding from the Tennessee Department of Health to support developing the capacity and quality of the early childhood workforce will be described. The presenter also will describe the current work of the Association of Infant Mental Health in Tennessee (AIMHiTN), including the implementation of the Infant Mental Health (IMH) Endorsement® for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health (IMH-E®), an internationally recognized credential.

Fostering Peace: The Impact of a Nonprofit Community-Based Organization on Young Foster Youths’ Social-Emotional Development and Pre-Academic SkillsAlpert, Carrie 18 March 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In the United States, approximately 400,000 children reside in foster care, and most have been exposed to caregiver abuse, neglect, or abandonment. A majority of foster children suffer the effects of damaging circumstances including poverty, violence, inferior health care, and substandard housing. Consequently, young foster youth frequently struggle to accomplish developmental tasks such as establishing secure attachment relationships, cultivating preacademic skills, and acquiring social-emotional competence. The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of Peace4Kids, a nonprofit community-based organization, on young foster youths’ social-emotional development and pre-academic skills. Data collected from parents, teachers, and administrators during semi-structured interviews documented children’s experiences as they attended the organization’s Saturday Core Program. Participants noted that as foster children participated in a variety of curricular and co-curricular experiences at Peace4Kids, their social, emotional, and academic development were positively impacted. Parents, teachers, and administrators reported that the organization’s culture of consistency, trust, and accountability promoted secure attachment relationships among foster youth, staff members, and peers at the Saturday Core Program. Participants iterated that secure relationships provided a foundation for foster children to subsequently acquire social and emotional capacities, including persistence, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and autonomy. As youth in foster care developed social-emotional competencies, pre-academic skills such as literacy and numeracy emerged. This study’s findings indicate that a comprehensive approach is necessary to address the unique needs of foster children who have experienced prior trauma. Additionally, this research study contributes to a growing body of work that explores the role of attachment relationships in group and organizational settings.

The project is focused on healthy lifestyle of the primary school pupils in the Czech Republic. The author based on analysis of previous years which were realized by a profit organization. His own contributions are made by the implementation of the project. Methods: There is a case study used to analyze the information about the project Sports talent of the year. Analysis of the conditions is carried out with the aid of PEST analysis, Porter's model of five forces, and analysis of resources. SWOT analysis is applied to synthesize previous analyzes. Results: The study revealed gaps especially in the management activities of the project Sports talent of the year. The greatest gaps can be seen in the branch of staffing, marketing and communications and financing. The aim of the study is to explore the specifics of strategic planning in non-profit organizations, their experiences with planning and, on the basis of their experiences, present practical recommendations. The method chosen for collecting information were interviews with selected staff of organizations that are doing strategic planning. Qualitative research has been used for when evaluating the interviews. The study focuses on basic terminology and explanation of single terms. It shows various stages of planning, the process itself, and is complemented by practical examples. The text includes a case study of an organization that is using strategic planning. Essential part of the case study forms the key drivers for the decision to implement strategic planning. It works through the entire planning process beginning with the formation of working groups, the setting up of a vision, individual goals and different analyzes. Finally, the study presents the key strategic document the organization has created including detailed information on elaborated tasks, relevant timetables and a financial analysis.

Because of reason, that marketing in non-profit organizations functions a relatively short time in comparison to profit organizations, marketing strategies and strategic planning does not have a clear direction. Bakgrund: Majoriteten av landets golfklubbar drivs som ideella föreningar där syftet är att främja medlemmarnas gemensamma intresse. Ekonomin kan trots det ideella syftet ses som en viktig beståndsdel för ideella föreningar. Där regelbundna uppföljningar är att föredra för att undvika en sämre ekonomisk situation. Då ekonomistyrningens syfte ämnar till att uppnå ekonomiska mål kan det fordras anpassning av styrningsverktygen för att kunna applicera dem på den ideella verksamheten. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att öka förståelsen för hur ekonomiska styrningsverktyg anpassas till ideella föreningar som har medlemmarnas intresse i fokus. Metod: Tillvägagångssättet utgår från en kvalitativ metod, där studien genomförts på ideella golfklubbar. Det empiriska materialet har inhämtats från fyra semi-strukturerade intervjuer, med klubbchef från respektive golfklubb. Materialet har därefter analyserats utifrån en komparativ metod för att upptäcka skillnader och likheter mellan respondenterna. Slutsats: Studien visar att ekonomiska styrningsverktyg till viss del måste anpassas till den ideella verksamheten, där anpassningen sker efter medlemmarnas intresse. Anpassning görs till budgetarbetet, möjligheten till att öka rörliga intäkter, att investeringsbedömning görs utan möjlighet till intäktsberäkning, samt ideella föreningars olika finansieringsmöjligheter. / Background: The majority of swedish golf clubs are run as non-profit organizations where the purpose is to work for the members' common interest. Despite the non-profit purpose, the economy can be seen as an important element for non-profit organizations where regular follow up is preferable to avoid a bad economic situation. Since the purpose of management control is to achieve financial goals, adaptation may be required to apply the control tools to non-profit organizations. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how management control tools are adapted to non-profit organizations that have the members' interest in focus. Method: The approach is based on a qualitative method and the study was conducted at non-profit golf clubs. The empirical material has been collected from four semi- structured interviews with the club manager from each golf club. The material has then been analyzed on the basis of a comparative method for detecting differences and similarities between the respondents. Conclusion: This study shows that management control tools in some parts have to be adapted to non-profit organizations and is adapted after the members' interest. Adaptation is made to the budget process, the possibility to increase variable income, that the investment analysis is made without the possibility of revenue calculation and to the different financing possibilities for non-profit organizations.

Two Essays on Corporate Income Taxes and Organizational Forms in the United StatesHu, Zhenhua 01 September 2006 (has links)
Corporate income taxation has a profound impact on economic behavior in the United States. This dissertation focuses on two aspects: the impact of dividend taxation on investment and the impact of corporate income tax exemption on nonprofit organizations activity. The first essay compares dividend payout ratios of C and S corporations to test the validity of the traditional and the new views on dividend taxation. Average corporate income tax rate is used as an instrumental variable. The results support the traditional view. The second essay focuses on whether the exemption of nonprofit organizations from the corporate income tax affects the competition between for-profit and nonprofit hospitals. Time series and panel data analysis show that tax subsidies to nonprofit organizations have a positive impact on nonprofit hospitals’ market share.
