Åsrunan. Användning och ljudvärde i runsvenska steninskrifter / The os-rune: Use and phonetic value in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stoneWilliams, Henrik January 1990 (has links)
The runic alphabet in the Viking Age (ca. 800-1100) only consisted of 16 characters. These did not cover the Rune-Swedish phoneme system. One of the runes, the so-called os-rune, was used for at least 8 different phonemes. By tradition it has been used to date Viking Age runic inscriptions in the Scandinavian countries. The present work investigates the phonetic and phonemic value of the os-rune in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stone, altogether 1,745 instances in 961 inscriptions. On the basis of the analysis, the accepted view of the chronological value of the os-rune is assessed, and is found to be non-valid. The regional variations in the use of the os-rune are also studied, particularly in the context of individual rune-carvers, but also to see if any dialectal variation is discernable. It is found that there is a marked consistency in the use of the os-rune for either rounded or unrounded vowels. Inscriptions, where both uses occur, are concentrated to one small geographical area. TITLE: Teaching of French pronunciation aimed at nasal vowels SUMMARY: The thesis deals with the issues of French pronunciation teaching at Czech schools. The theoretical part is aimed at teaching of pronunciation, the key concepts of phonetics and its importance in learning of foreign language. Then the thesis deals with the base of French phonetic system, especially the nasal vowels, the comparison of Czech and French phonetics and the main methods of teaching phonetics. The nasal vowels and their pronunciation are the starting point for the practical part - research in the field of the ability of Czech students to recognize and pronounce the nasal vowels in a good way. The research is based on 95 recordings of Czech students from different classes (from high school to bachelor's programme). Previous issue date: 2017-02-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Este trabalho se propõe a investigar a aquisição das vogais nasais [ɛ̃], [ã] e [ɔ̃] da Língua Francesa por aprendizes do curso de licenciatura em Letras Português/Francês da Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Em termos articulatórios, essa classe de segmentos caracteriza-se pelo abaixamento do véu palatino, o que gera o acoplamento dos tubos nasal e oral (SEARA, 2000; DEMOLIN e MEDEIROS, 2006; BARBOSA e MADUREIRA, 2015) e, consequentemente, por aspectos acústicos diferentes daqueles encontrados nas vogais orais. Com a passagem livre do ar no trato nasal, o primeiro formante (F1) tende a abaixar e o terceiro (F3) a aumentar (HAWKINS e STEVENS, 1985; DELVAUX, 2001). Há também uma modificação na amplitude de picos espectrais – menor para as nasais –, aparecimento de picos espectrais adicionais e uma maior duração para os referidos segmentos (MORAES e WETZELS, 1992; SOUSA, 1994). Para desenvolver essa pesquisa, tomou-se como base a Fonologia Gestual (BROWMAN e GOLDSTEIN, 1986), cujas análises abordam o caráter dinâmico da fala e tratam o gesto como primitivo de análise. Para tanto, foram realizadas coletas de dados orais e articulatórios com três grupos de informantes: Grupo I - 8 aprendizes de FLE de semestres distintos (2º, 3º, 5º, 7º e 8º) do curso de licenciatura; Grupo II - 4 nativas de francês; e Grupo III - 4 nativas de português brasileiro. Os instrumentos de coletas consistem para a produção oral, em um teste de eliciação de palavras e de logatomas em frase-veículo e para a produção articulatória, somente o segundo tipo de teste já referido. As coletas dos Grupos I e III foram realizadas na cabine acústica do Laboratório Emergência da Linguagem Oral (LELO/UFPel); já as do Grupo II, em Paris/França. Para análise acústica dos dados de produção oral, foi utilizado o software PRAAT versão 6.0.20; para a análise articulatória, o software Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA), versão 2.16.11. A análise dos segmentos dos dois grupos de nativas constatou que (i) as vogais nasais do PB têm maior duração absoluta, bem como maior duração de seus murmúrios; (ii) a duração relativa da fase nasal das vogais do francês são mais longas; (iii) para diferenciar segmento nasal de oral, a nativa do francês posterioriza seus movimentos de língua, já a do português, eleva. Quanto aos dados das aprendizes, foi possível constatar: (i) as vogais nasais do francês têm maior duração relativa e absoluta quando comparadasàs do português; (ii) maior duração absoluta da fase nasal das vogais da LE; (iii) menores valores de duração do murmúrio no FR; (iv) generalização de gestos de língua da informante do 2º semestre para as três vogais nasais do FR e (v) distinção acurada da informante do 8º. / This work aims to investigate the acquisition of the nasal vowels [ɛ̃], [ã] and [ɔ̃] of French by learners in an undergraduate course in Languages (Portuguese and French) of Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel, Brazil). In articulatory terms, this class of segments is characterized by a lowering of the velum, which makes a connection between nasal and oral tubes (SEARA, 2000; DEMOLIN and MEDEIROS, 2006; BARBOSA and MADUREIRA, 2015). Consequently, the acoustic aspects that characterize these vowels are different from those found in oral vowels. With the free passage of air in the nasal tract, the first formant value (F1) tends to lower and the third formant value (F3) tends to rise (HAWKINS and STEVENS, 1985; DELVAUX, 2001). There is also a change in the width of spectral peaks – which is smaller for nasal vowels –, as well as the appearance of additional spectral peaks and a longer length for these segments (MORAES and WETZELS, 1992; SOUSA, 1994). In order to develop this research, Gestural Phonology (BROWMAN and GOLDSTEIN, 1986) has been adopted as a theoretical basis. Its analyses approach the dynamic nature of speech and regard the gesture as a primitive of analysis. To this end, collections of oral and articulatory data have been made with three groups of informants: Group I – 8 learners of French as a foreign language (FFL) in different semesters (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th) of the course; Group II – 4 native speakers of French; and Group III – 4 native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The data collection instruments for oral production were tests of elicitation of words and pseudowords in a carrier phrase and, for articulatory production, only the second type of test has been applied. The data collections with Groups I and III were made in an acoustic cabin of the Emergence of Oral Language Laboratory (LELO/UFPel); the data collections of Group II were made in Paris, France. The softwares used for the analyses were Praat (version 6.0.20) for oral production data, and Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA, version 2.16.11) for articulatory data. The analysis of the segments produced by both groups of native speakers showed that (i) BP nasal vowels have longer absolute length, as well as a longer length of their murmurs; (ii) the relative length of the nasal phase of French vowels is longer; (iii) in order to distinguish nasal segments from oral ones, the native speaker of French posteriorizes her tongue movements, whereas the speaker of Portuguese elevates them. Regarding the data produced by learners, it was possible to verify: (i) longer relative and absolute lengths in French nasal vowels when compared to Portuguese; (ii) longer absolute length of the nasal phase in vowels of the foreign language; (iii) lower values of murmur length in French; (iv) generalization of tongue gestures by the 2nd semester informant for the three French nasal vowels and (v) accurate distinction by the 8th semester informant.

Com o objetivo de organizar e esclarecer essas múltiplas possibilidades de tratamento articulatório no canto, o presente trabalho investiga o comportamento e a articulação dos processos nasais na fala em português brasileiro, apresenta uma proposta de transcrição fonética para esses sons no canto e evidencia distintas possibilidades de variação articulatória pertinentes à pratica musical. Dessa maneira, estabelece um trajeto que fundamenta o processo de escolha dos símbolos a serem utilizados na representação fonética dos nasais no canto, baseado em estudos fonético-fonológicos da fala e na abordagem articulatória, até a sua aplicação prática, por meio do uso da sílaba melódica em uma proposta alternativa de representação. / The nasality of the Brazilian Portuguese language sung and spoken is characterized by a great articulatory variation. In order to organize and clarify these multiple possibilities of articulatory treatment in singing, the present work investigates the behavior and articulation of nasal processes in Brazilian Portuguese, presents a proposal of phonetic transcription for these sounds in the singing and shows different possibilities of articulatory variation pertinent to musical practice. In this way, it establishes a path that bases the process of choosing the symbols to be used in the phonetic representation of the nasals in the song, based on phonetic-phonological studies of speech and in the articulatory approach until its practical application, through the use of the melodic syllable in an alternative proposal for representation.

Perception and Production of French Nasal Vowels by German Native SpeakersMartin, Oriane Mathilde January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores the challenges faced by German native speakers in perceiving and producing French nasal vowels. French has three to four nasal vowels, while German lacks them entirely. The study analyzes German speakers of different proficiency levels using a perception task and production measurements. The results indicate that German speakers struggle in perceiving nasal contrasts, but can perceive nasality in itself. Acoustic analysis reveals deviations in nasalance and formant values compared to native French speakers. However, L2 speakers successfully master other markers of nasality. The findings highlight the interplay between perception and production, impacting the acquisition of nasal vowels. These results contribute to second language research, emphasizing the difficulty of nasal vowels for L2 learners and their implications for language teaching. Overall, nasal vowels pose a consistent challenge, varying based on speakers' native languages.

Towards an empirical and typological exploration of the sonority of nasal vowelsIbrahim, Bayan 08 1900 (has links)
Ce mémoire est une étude phonologique et phonétique visant à ordonner les voyelles nasales en fonction de leur degré en sonorité. Jusqu'à présent, la sonorité des voyelles nasales n’a pas été abordée dans la littérature phonologique et phonétique; ainsi, cette étude vise à combler cette lacune de la recherche en menant une étude typologique et expérimentale des différentes qualités des voyelles nasales. La première partie du mémoire comprend un examen du comportement et de la distribution des voyelles nasales dans les langues du monde afin d'élucider leur place dans l’échelle de sonorité. La partie typologique montre que, dans trois des langues étudiées, seules les voyelles nasales hautes subissent des processus phonologiques comme l’harmonie nasale et la réduction vocalique tandis que, dans deux des langues étudiées, seule la voyelle nasale basse subit des processus phonologiques comme le changement vocalique déplacement de la voyelle et l’attraction de l’accent. La deuxième partie est une expérience nasométrique dans laquelle l’intensité des voyelles nasales et orales est mesurée. L’analyse d’intensité permet de déterminer le niveau de sonorité de chaque voyelle nasale car l’intensité est considérée comme le corrélat physique le plus saillant de la sonorité. L'analyse statistique descriptive effectuée sur l'ensemble des données des voyelles organisées selon leur hauteur (c'est-à-dire haute, mi-haute, mi-basse ou basse) et leur type (nasal ou oral) montre que [a] est la voyelle orale la plus haute en intensité relatif. Quant aux voyelles nasales, [ĩ] est la plus élevée en intensité. Ainsi, suite à l’analyse statistique inférentielle, nous avons établi une échelle permettant de classer les voyelles orales et nasales en fonction de leur intensité. / This thesis is a phonological and phonetic study to classify nasal vowels according to their rank in sonority. To date, the sonority of nasal vowels has not been covered in the phonology and phonetics literature; thus, this study aims to fill that research gap through conducting a typological and experimental investigation of different qualities of nasal vowels. The first part of this thesis includes an examination of the behaviour and the distribution of nasal vowels in the world’s languages to elucidate the place of nasal vowels in sonority hierarchy. The typological part of this study shows that, in three selected languages, only high nasal vowels undergo phonological processes such as nasal harmony and vowel reduction while, in two other selected languages, only the low nasal vowel undergoes phonological processes like vowel shift and attraction of stress. The second part of this study presents the findings of a nasometric experiment in which the intensity of nasal vowels and oral vowels is measured. Analysing intensity helps to determine the level of sonority of each nasal vowel, because intensity is considered the most salient physical correlate of sonority. The descriptive statistical analysis performed on the data set of vowels organized according to height (i.e., high, mid-high, mid-low, and low) and type (nasal or oral) shows that, [a] is the highest in relative intensity. As for nasal vowels, [ĩ] is the highest in intensity. Thus, according to the inferential statistical analysis, we established a scale that classifies oral and nasal vowels according to their intensity.

S’il est aujourd’hui communément admis que la perception de la parole s’effectue d’une manière plus optimale en mode audiovisuel qu’en mode auditif seul (Benoît, Mohamadi et Kandel, 1994, Schwartz, Berthommier et Savariaux, 2004), la nature des informations visuelles dont il est le plus souvent question est la mimo-gestuelle articulatoire fournie par le locuteur en face à face. Cependant, dans une situation d’enseignement d’une langue étrangère, un autre type d’aide visuelle intervient généralement : la forme écrite des éléments oraux. Pourtant en didactique des langues étrangères, la question du passage à l’écrit est loin d’être consensuelle et certains didacticiens se prononcent en faveur d’un entraînement intensif de la prononciation au tout début de l’apprentissage, avant que l’apprenant ne soit confronté au code écrit (Lauret, 2007). Notre hypothèse est que la dimension facilitante de la forme écrite pour certains publics ne doit pas être négligée, même en début d’apprentissage. Notre recherche se fonde sur des expérimentations menées auprès d’apprenants hindiphones. Tenant compte des spécificités de ce public, nous pensons que l’écrit peut, dans certains cas, faciliter sa réception orale des sons du français en début d’apprentissage, condition nécessaire et préalable à leur production (Renard, 1979). Les tests que nous avons conçus obligent les apprenants à recentrer leur attention sur la graphie de sons (les voyelles nasales [ɑ̃] et [ɔ̃]) dès le début de leur apprentissage au moyen de diverses focalisations visuelles écrites (Fort, Spinelli, Savariaux et Kandel, 2010). Les propositions didactiques que nous formulons à la suite reposent sur la suite logique perception – (transcription graphique) — production même si cette présente étude se centre sur l’évaluation de la perception des sons. / It is commonly admitted today that speech perception is more performing in an audiovisual context than in a visual one (Benoît, Mohamadi and Kandel, 1994, Schwartz, Berthommier and Savariaux, 2004). Visual information in this situation often consists of the speaker’s articulatory and facial gestures provided by the face-to-face interaction. However, when learning a foreign language, another type of visual help is generally available to identify oral forms: their written forms. And yet, in the field of didactics of foreign languages, the issue of the oral-written transition is far from being consensual and some didacticians favour training the pronunciation skills of the learner at the beginning of the learning process, before he is confronted to the written code (Lauret, 2007). Our hypothesis is that the facilitating effect of written forms should not be neglected, even at the beginning of a foreign language learning process. Our research is based on the case of Hindi speakers. Taking into consideration the specificities of this population, we think that written information can, in some cases, facilitate the oral reception of French sounds in the beginning of the learning process, which would be a preliminary condition to their production (Renard, 1979). We have conceived a series of test, forcing the Hindi speaking learners to refocus their attention on the nasal vowels [ɑ̃] and [ɔ̃]’s written form from the beginning of the learning process, using different forms of visual written focuses (Fort, Spinelli, Savariaux and Kandel, 2010). Our didactic proposal relies on the following process: perception – (written form transcription) – production, even though the present study is centred on the evaluation of speech perception.

Description and limited aspects of nasal vowels articulation pre, post and tonic
in Brazilian Portuguese. There has been concern in the quantitative and
qualitative description of the standardized pronunciation, by TV Globo, the nasal
vowels of Brazilian Portuguese. The aim of this work is to contribute to studies
of identity of a standard pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese, in order to
provide the "desestrangeiração" students, speakers of other languages who are
learning Brazilian Portuguese. It has specific goals for:
1 - The qualitative and quantitative description of the pronunciation of nasal
vowels pre-stress;
2 - The qualitative and quantitative description of the pronunciation of nasal
vowels post-tonic;
3 - The qualitative and quantitative description of the pronunciation of nasal
vowels tonic;
The procedure of analysis was descriptive and explanatory materials being
collected in the database of pronunciation stander, file this one from Prof. Dr.
Regina Celia Pagliuchi da Silveira. The results enabled the formulation of rules
for the pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese idiom:
1-The pre-stress nasal vowels are articulated following the control of the letter;
2-The vowels post-tonic is made by nasal vowel or the vowel reduction or
desnasalação;
3-Vowels tonic is made by nasal vowels monotongações or ditongações,
depending on the number of syllables in the word,
The 4-ditongações preferably are increasing;
We conclude that there is a standardized pronunciation for the nasal
vowels of Brazilian Portuguese and this is controlled by phonological rules,
phonetic and morfofonológicas / Esta dissertação situa-se na área da Descrição de Língua Portuguesa e
delimitada aspectos articulatórios das vogais nasais pré, pós e tônicas do
português brasileiro. Tem-se por tema, a descrição quantitativa e qualitativa da
pronúncia standardizada, pela TV Globo, das vogais nasais do português
brasileiro. O objetivo geral deste trabalho é contribuir com os estudos
identitários de uma pronúncia standar do português brasileiro, a fim de propiciar
a desestrangeiração de alunos, falantes de outras línguas que estão
aprendendo o português brasileiro. Tem-se por objetivos específicos:
1- A descrição qualitativa e quantitativa da pronúncia das vogais nasais prétônicas;
2- A descrição qualitativa e quantitativa da pronúncia das vogais nasais pós
tônicas;
3- A descrição qualitativa e quantitativa da pronúncia das vogais nasais
tônicas;
O procedimento de análise foi descritivo e explicativo, sendo os materiais
coletados no banco de dados da pronúncia standar, arquivo este da Profª Drª
Regina Célia Pagliuchi da Silveira. Os resultados obtidos possibilitaram a
formulação de regras para a pronúncia idiomática do português brasileiro:
1-As vogais pré-tônicas nasais são articuladas seguindo o controle da letra;
2-As vogais pós-tônicas são realizadas pela vogal nasal ou pela redução
vocálica ou desnasalação;
3-As vogais tônicas são realizadas por vogais nasais monotongações ou
ditongações, dependendo do nº de sílabas da palavra;
4-As ditongações preferencialmente são crescentes;
Conclui-se que há uma pronúncia standardizada para as vogais nasais do
português brasileiro e esta é controlada por regras fonológicas, fonéticas e
morfofonológicas

Portuguese, specifically those of the speech community of Fortaleza dos Nogueiras,
Maranhão and European Portuguese, in some speech data from the region of Lisbon, Portugal.
The theoretical foundation is sustained on the postulates of Camara Jr. (1970 ), Mateus
(1982), de Morais Barbosa (1994) and Moraes and Wetzels (1992), concerning nasality in
Portuguese, especially in Brazilian Portuguese. The theoretical framework of Acoustic
Phonetics is composed mainly by the work of Ladefoged (2003, 2006 and 2007), Ladefoged,
Johnson (2008), Mateus et al. (2005), Delgado-Martins (1988), Morais Barbosa (1994),
Malmberg (1998), Medeiros (2007), Medeiros et al. (2008) and Sousa, E. (1994). The
informants used as subjects in this research, both Brazilian and Portuguese, are people with
low education, low turnover, 50 years of age or older. The Brazilian informants were born and
lived most of their lives in rural Fortaleza dos Nogueiras; the Portuguese live in the outskirts
of Lisbon. The speech data in Brazil are a result of our field research conducted in 2011. The
data from Portugal were provided by the Instituto de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa
and form part of the speech collection of ALEPG (Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of
Portugal and Galicia). The acoustic-phonetic analysis of the data is made through the program
of Speech Station by Sensimetrics for visualization of expectograms and to extract
measurements of F1 and F2. We present the values of formants 1 and 2 of the oral and nasal
vowels and these are compared in order to show what happens with the nasal vowel in
relation to the corresponding oral; we highlight the acoustical characteristics of oral and nasal
vowels; we show the articulatory triangle of vowels of the informants of the research
highlighting the contours the vowels assume in articulation and the frequency bands in which
each vowel stands. Finally, we carry out a comparative investigation of oral and nasal vowels
in these two varieties of Portuguese. / Este trabalho apresenta uma análise fonético-acústica das vogais orais e nasais do português
brasileiro, mais especificamente da comunidade de fala de Fortaleza dos Nogueiras,
Maranhão e do português europeu, em alguns dados de fala da região de Lisboa, Portugal. O
embasamento teórico pauta-se nos postulados de Camara Jr. (1970), de Mateus (1982), de
Morais Barbosa (1994) e de Moraes e Wetzels (1992), acerca da nasalidade na língua
portuguesa, especialmente, no português brasileiro. O referencial teórico de Fonética Acústica
compõe-se, principalmente, pelos trabalhos de Ladefoged (2003, 2006 e 2007), Ladefoged;
Jonhson (2008), Mateus et al. (2005), Delgado-Martins (1988), Morais Barbosa (1994),
Malmberg (1998), Medeiros (2007), Medeiros et al. (2008) e Sousa, E. (1994). Os
informantes sujeitos desta pesquisa, tanto brasileiros como portugueses, são pessoas com
baixa escolaridade, baixa rotatividade, que têm a partir de 50 anos de idade. Os brasileiros
nasceram e viveram a maior parte de suas vidas na zona rural de Fortaleza dos Nogueiras; os
portugueses são moradores do entorno de Lisboa. Os dados de fala do Brasil são resultado de
nossa pesquisa de campo realizada em 2011. Os de Portugal foram-nos cedidos pelo Instituto
de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa e fazem parte do acervo de fala do ALEPG (Atlas
Linguístico e Etnográfico de Portugal e da Galiza). A análise fonético-acústica dos dados é
feita por meio do programa Speech Station da Sensimetrics, para a visualização dos
expectogramas e para a extração das medidas de F1 e de F2. Apresentam-se os valores dos
formantes 1 e 2 das vogais orais e nasais e estes são comparados com o intuito de mostrar o
que acontece com a vogal nasal em relação à correspondente oral; evidenciam-se quais as
características acústicas das vogais orais e nasais; apresenta-se o triângulo articulatório das
vogais desses informantes da pesquisa com evidência para os contornos que elas assumem na
articulação e para as faixas de frequência em que cada vogal se posiciona. Por fim, realiza-se
uma investigação comparativa das vogais orais e nasais nessas duas variedades da língua
portuguesa.

Aquisição do português como L2 por falantes de espanhol: uma experiência com o modelo de ontogenia / Acquisition of portuguese as second language (L2) by speakers of spanish: an experience with the model of ontogenyGuimarães, Flávia Isabel da Silva 04 November 2011 (has links)
Este estudo tem como objetivo verificar a eficácia do Modelo de Ontogenia (MAJOR, 1987), por meio da análise do processo de aquisição do português como segunda língua (L2) por falantes de espanhol no nível fonético-fonológico. Para tanto, reportamo-nos a pressupostos teóricos que antecedem o dito modelo: a Análise Contrastiva (LADO, 1957), o Modelo de Interlíngua (SELINKER, 1972) e a Hipótese da Marcação Diferencial (ECKMAN, 1987). O Modelo de Ontogenia descreve o processo da aquisição de L2 no nível fonético-fonológico dividindo-o em duas fases: interferência, quando o aprendiz passa a sofrer grande influência de sua L1, e desenvolvimento, quando o aprendiz pode passar por um processo semelhante ao da criança em fase de aquisição da L1. Nosso objeto de estudo foi o processo de aquisição das vogais médio-abertas e das vogais nasais do português, realizando uma análise comparativa entre o sistema fonético-fonológico do português e do espanhol, com enfoque no sistema vocálico. Nessa análise, incluímos o percurso histórico da origem das vogais e a questão da nasalidade em ambas as línguas. Embora este estudo seja centrado na observação da interferência da L1 na aquisição de L2, consideramos também, a interferência de fatores extralinguísticos (KRASHEN, 1982). Para elaboração do corpus foram realizadas duas gravações, com intervalo entre 8 a 18 meses, com quatro pós-graduandos da Universidade de São Paulo, denominados Informantes. A metodologia consistiu na aplicação de entrevista espontânea e leitura de palavras, frases e trecho de texto literário. Acreditamos que nosso trabalho possa contribuir para o desenvolvimento da área de Português para Falantes de Outras Línguas (PFOL) por agregar informações sobre as dificuldades dos aprendizes falantes de espanhol na aquisição do sistema vocálico. / This study aims to examine the efficiency of The Ontogeny Model (Major, 1987) through analysis of the phonetic and phonological aspects of the acquisition of Portuguese as a second language (L2) by native speakers of Spanish. To do this, we relied on the following theoretical assumptions which preceded the model: Contrastive Analysis (Lado, 1957), Interlanguage Model (Selinker, 1972) and Differential Markedness Hypothesis (Eckman, 1987). The Ontogeny Model describes the process of L2 acquisition in the phonetic and phonological levels by dividing it in two stages: interference, when the learner has great influence of his/her first language (L1), and development, when the learner may pass through a process similar to the child acquiring L1. Our object of study is the acquisition process of Portuguese open-mid vowels and nasal vowels, establishing a comparative analysis between the phonetic and phonological systems of Portuguese and English, with focus on the vowel system. In this analysis, we include the historical progression of the vowel origins and the issue of nasality in both languages. Despite this study being centered in the observation of L1 interference in L2 acquisition, we also considered the influence of extra-linguistic factors (Krashen, 1982). To compose the corpus, two recordings were done, with an interval between 8 to 18 months, with four informers, postgraduate students at Universidade de São Paulo. The methodology consisted of spontaneous speech interview and the reading of words, sentences and a literary excerpt. We believe that our work can contribute to the development of the area of Portuguese to Speakers of Other Languages (PSOL) as it assembles information about the difficulties that speakers of Spanish have in the acquisition of the vowel system
