In this work the preparation and characterization of conducting composites containing natural rubber (NR), leather residue (LR) and carbon black (CB) are presented. Samples were conformed in different percentages of mass of the NR, LR and CB constituents: 38/60/2.0; 37.5/60/2.5; 37/60/3.0 and 36.5/60/3.5, respectively, applying a pressure of 12 tons during 5 minutes at the temperature of 160°C, resulting in membranes with good quality and with the desired thickness. The NR/LR/CB composites were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), mechanical test (stress vs. strain) and he electric conductivity measurements. The presence of the CB in composites NR/LR/CB provided an electric conductivity of the order of 1.5x10-3 S.cm-1. Mechanical tests show that the NR/LR/CB composites have intermediate properties between the membranes of NR and the leather. It was found that NR/LR/CB membranes can be easily prepared with very low cost. They presented good thermal stability, adequate mechanical and electric conductivity properties that are appropriate to produce gloves, blankets and antistatic floors. In addition, the NR/LR/CB composites are obtained from leather residues from tanneries contributing for the reduction of an environmental problem.

Santos, Josiane Alexandrino dos. January 2018 (has links)
Within the studies under development in this area, the one that has being gaining prominence is the development of composite sensors of cement-based piezoelectric materials, that can act in the monitoring and detection of possible failures in civil structures in real and continuous time. Some of the major problems encountered in the development of piezoelectric sensors based on cementitious matrices lie in the degradation of the properties of the sensors, both as against the environmental conditions in continuous time to which they are subjected, as well as the possibility that filling phases interfere directly in the process of curing the matrix, reducing its desirable mechanical properties. In order to solve such problems, the present study aimed to obtain and characterize of a composite piezoelectric array of modified cement with natural rubber (NR) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) as the piezoelectric layer. The PZT was chosen as the piezoelectric phase because of its high piezoelectric coefficient, while the BN insertion sought to guarantee the resistance of the composites to the passage of water, moisture and noxious solutions to the cement, in order to increase not only the durability, as well the piezoeletric prop... / Study of stability of the mechanical and chemical properties of rubber compunds vulcanized with sulfur after heat and oxidative aging.

Rodrigues, Erick Batista 21 June 2010 (has links)
The increment of the service life of tires has been a constant challenge for their manufacturers. Increasing the life of a tire does not mean only prolong his life, but also maintain its characteristics and properties stable, whatever the compounds were designed for. To keep stable the properties and characteristics of the compounds, we must have the stability of the crosslinks formed during the vulcanization of the tire. In normal use, the main causes of the degradation of the crosslinks are due to the thermal and oxidative attacks. The objective of this study is to evaluate the thermal and oxidative stability of the crosslinks formed under different conditions and curing systems in a compound with natural rubber. Five formulations were prepared based on the natural rubber RSS-3 and variations in the dosage of sulfur and zinc oxide, as well as the type of the vulcanization system, conventional or efficient, were introduced. All compounds were cured in two conditions, 170°C and 140°C. The vulcanized compounds were evaluated by physical and chemical tests, including measurements of the storage and loss moduli, tension and stretching to break, tear resistance, crosslinking density and kinetics of curing. The performance of the compounds was evaluated under three conditions, namely new (original) and after aging in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. The results allowed us to conclude that the use of zinc oxide of high surface area and the efficient vulcanization systems are more resistant to thermal and oxidative aging.

\"Estudo das propriedades das blendas de amido termoplástico e látex natural\" / \"Study of properties of thermoplastic starch - natural rubber blends\"

Jacob, Ricardo Francischetti 24 November 2006 (has links)
The aim of the study reported here was to prepare and characterize blends of thermoplastic starch and natural rubber, based on manioc starch (tapioca), corn starch and natural rubber latex used directly as extracted from Hevea brasiliensis (Brazilian rubber tree), without prior treatment. The thermoplastic starch (TPS) matrices were prepared in a high-intensity mixer at two temperatures (120°C and 150°C), with 30% (w/w) glycerol, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol as plasticizer, and from 2.5% to 10% (w/w) natural rubber latex (NRL) was added to form the blends. The properties of the composite blends were assessed by XRD, TGA, tensile strength tests, water absorption tests and SEM. The shearing forces developed during mixing resulted in a loss of crystallinity and breakdown of the starch granule structure. The addition of NRL reduced the crystallinity index of the TPS, but did not change the type of crystal structure exhibited by this phase. The thermal stability of the TPS matrix was found to depend on the origin of the starch, the type of plasticizer, the processing temperature and the latex content. In the mechanical strength tests, the cornstarch TPS proved stronger than the manioc product, especially when plasticized with glycerol, while the mixing temperature had little influence. With the addition of NRL, no significant was observed in the mechanical properties, except for a small increase in the elongation of the material at breakpoint. As latex was added there was a linear decrease in the maximum absorption of water at equilibrium, as well as a reduction in the diffusion coefficient of water in the matrix. While the mixing process played an important part in producing an adequate blend morphology in most of the mixtures containing glycerol, the components of blends in which the TPS was plasticized with ethylene or propylene glycol were not well-dispersed. The TPS that afforded the best dispersion of latex particles was composed of cornstarch and glycerol and plasticized at 150°C. The highquality dispersion achieved was a consequence of using raw latex instead of solid rubber, since in the latex the rubber particles are coated with surface proteins and lipids that help to compatibilize the starch, a polar matrix, with the nonpolar rubber.

Reinforcement of Natural Rubber by “Expanded Clay” Adopting “Propping-Open Approach”

Rooj, Sandip 26 November 2013 (has links) (PDF)
During the last years rubber nanocomposites obtained by incorporating anisotropic clay nanoparticles within a rubber matrix to tailor material properties have attracted steadily growing interest. However, one main complication preventing rubber-clay nanocomposites from many potential applications is the difficulty to achieve a high degree of exfoliation particularly in case of melt mixing or compounding (using mixing equipment like internal mixer, two roll mills which can be up-scaled in industry). Albeit commercially available organomodified montmorillonite clays (OMt) are fairly compatible with the polar rubber like Acrylo-nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR), chloroprene rubber (CR) etc., its dispersion in non-polar rubbers like natural rubber (NR), is rather unsatisfactory. Incorporation of only 5 phr of OMt in NR by mechanical mixing leads to very poor dispersions with larger aggregates. Large agglomerates of OMt were observed with bare eyes throughout the matrix. Even in the TEM micrographs, highly agglomerated structures of clay particle were observed. A high degree of exfoliation of such clay is achieved in NR utilizing the so called ‘Propping-open approach’ where stepwise expansion of interlayer spacing of Mt took place. A series of long chain fatty acids (C16-C22) are intercalated into the interlayer space of OMt and a gradual expansion of the interlayer space were observed as the chain length of the fatty acid increased. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurement indicated successful intercalation of the fatty acids into the interlayer space of the clay minerals. Since the fatty acid containing 22 carbon atoms has the largest interlayer distance among the modified samples studied, it has been selected for further study to understand the reinforcing behavior in NR matrix. An unusual mechanical percolation behavior of EOMt nanoparticles was observed in a NR matrix. The value of the mechanical percolation threshold (φp) and the fractal nature of nanoparticle clusters were determined through an analysis of the experimental data based on a theory put forward by Huber and Vilgis. This phenomenon was discussed in terms of fractal dimensions of the nanoparticle cluster. The impact of filler dispersion and rubber-filler interactions on the viscoelastic behavior of NR nanocomposites was systematically investigated. Significant non-linear viscoelastic behavior (Payne effect) was observed at very low EOMt content. Kraus and Maier-Göritz models were utilized to interpret such non-linear viscoelastic behavior. The nanocomposites showed enormous improvement in different physic-mechanical properties in the presence of EOMt. Technical elastomers are generally filled with certain fillers (e.g. carbon black) in order to reinforce the rubber matrix for some typical applications like tires, conveyer belts etc. Such rubber goods are always exposed to cyclic stress and deformations attributed to their dynamic application. Under constant and repeated applied stress, cracks develop at a stress concentration point, which could lead to ultimate failure. Therefore, the crack initiation and propagation behavior in such rubber products is very fundamental and need proper attention. The role of EOMt nanoparticles on the microstructure and fracture mechanical behavior of CB filled NR composites was investigated. Using pure-shear test specimen tear fatigue analysis (TFA) tests under cyclic conditions were carried out to explicate the crack growth behavior of CB filled NR in the presence of EOMt. A significant reduction in crack growth rate was noticed in the presence of only 5 phr of EOMt. Furthermore, instrumented tensile-impact tests (IT-IT) were also performed for the characterization of the crack resistance of the materials under impact-like loading conditions.

Improvement of compatibility of poly(lactic acid) blended with natural rubber by modified natural rubber

Chumeka, Wannapa 11 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this research work was to improve the compatibility of polymer blends made from poly(lactic acid) and natural rubber (PLA/NR blends) by using modified natural rubber as a compatibilizer. Natural rubber was chemically modified into two categories: natural rubber grafted poly(vinyl acetate) copolymer (NR-g-PVAc) and block copolymers (PLA-NR diblock copolymer and PLA-NR-PLA triblock copolymer). PLA/NR blends were prepared by melting blending in a twin screw extruder and compression molded to obtain a 2-mm thick sheet. The blends contained 10-20 wt% of NR and modified NR, and the impact strength and tensile properties were investigated. The compatibilization effect was determined by DMTA, DSC and SEM. NR-g-PVAc was synthesized by emulsion polymerization to obtain different PVAc graft contents (1%, 5% and 12%). Characterization by DMTA showed an enhancement in miscibility of the PLA/NR-g-PVAc blends. NR-g-PVAc could be used as a toughening agent of PLA and as a compatibilizer of the PLA/NR blend. The block copolymers were synthesized following two routes: (1) hydroxyl telechelic natural rubber (HTNR) and lactide and (2) HTNR and PLA prepolymer. In the former route, lactide was in situ polymerized via a ring opening polymerization to be a PLA block segment during block copolymerization. In the latter route PLA prepolymer was synthesized by a condensation polymerization of L-lactic acid prior to block copolymerization. Both block copolymers acted as good compatibilizers for the PLA/NR blend by increasing the impact strength and decreasing the NR particle size. Triblock copolymers provided higher impact strength than diblock copolymers, and they were a less effective compatibilizer than NR-g-PVAc. In contrast to NR and NR-g-PVAc, the block copolymer was not a good toughening agent for PLA.

Desenvolvimento do Processo de Fabricação de Tubos Hospitalares por RVNRL: Otimização e Protótipo de Extrusão a Baixas Temperaturas. / DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICAL TUBE FABRICATION PROCESS FROM RVNRL: OTIMIZATION AND EXTRUTION DEVICE AT LOW TEMPERATURE

Hugo David Chirinos Collantes 15 October 1999 (has links)
The natural rubber latex was formulated, irradiation vulcanized and stabilized (GAMATEX) to make rubber goods for medical purpose. When the latex was vulcanized by gamma rays the effectiveness crosslinking of GAMATEX relationship between the concentration ratio of sensitizer system (x1=[n-BA]/[KOH]) and the vulcanization dose (x2), showing high interaction grade according to the following the mathematical equation: , where is the tensile strength. The RVNRL process was optimized for low vulcanization doses and high concentrations of n-BA. The resistance to radiolitic oxidation of rubber obtained from GAMATEX was attained when one antioxidants mixture (45% BANOX S + 55% TNPP) was added. This mixture exhibited synergetic effect. The latex showed pseudoplastic rheological behavior and the yield stress occurrence. The irreversible destabilization rate of latex was direct proportional to [n-BA] and indirect proportional to [KOH]. The post-irradiation effects or reversible destabilization of latex occurred because there is a residual concentration of [n-BA] that it was not reacted. The colloidal stability of GAMATEX improved with irradiation, showing showing the increase of thixotropic behavior and the tendency to newtonian behavior flow besides the relationship between the viscosity index (k) and the pseudoplastic index (n) according to the mathematical model: . This fact allows the higher storage time of GAMATEX. The relative viscosity of latex was relationship between the temperature and the total dry rubber content according to the mathematical model: , where rw is the ratio (BS/100-BS). The radiation vulcanized latex coagulated at –10ºC into the projected freezing system.
