Fenomenologia e história natural da síndrome de Tourette: breve resumo da pesquisa / Phenomenology and natural history of Tourette syndrome: brief summary or research

Leckman, James Frederick 09 April 2014 (has links)
Although overt motor and vocal tics are the defining features of Tourette syndrome, many individuals report experiencing sensory \"urges,\" which are often difficult to describe. The natural history of this condition is also variable, with some individuals experiencing a marked reduction in tics by the end of the second decade of life while others go on to have a lifelong condition. The aim of this thesis was three-fold: (1) to develop a valid and reliable clinical rating instrument; (2) to investigate the sensory phenomena associated with Tourette syndrome; and (3) to document the course of tic severity over the course of the first two decades of life. Each of these three studies involved groups of patients with Tourette syndrome or a chronic tic disorder and each of these studies has been published in a peer-reviewed journal. The Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) has excellent psychometric properties that have been independently replicated. It has also emerged as the most widely used clinician-rated tic severity scale in randomized clinical trials around the world. Sensory phenomena, particularly premonitory urges, are commonly reported among individuals with Tourette syndrome by the age of 10 years. There is considerable overlap with the sensory phenomena described by individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Tics usually have their onset in the first decade of life. They then follow a waxing and waning course and a changing repertoire of tics. As documented in the third study, for a majority of patients the period of worst tic severity usually falls between the ages of 7 and 15 years of age, after which tic severity gradually declines. This falloff in tic symptoms is consistent with available epidemiological data that indicate a much lower prevalence of Tourette syndrome among adults than children. This decline in tic severity has been confirmed in subsequent studies. In summary, incremental progress is being made in our efforts to characterize the phenomenology and natural history of Tourette syndrome. Revisions to the YGTSS should be considered. Significant advances have been made in measuring the premonitory urges associated with Tourette syndrome. The neurobiological underpinnings of the phenomenology and natural history of Tourette syndrome are currently underway in an effort to identify prognostic indicators

The Animal Lives in French-language Literary Prose 1891-1938

Picard, Nicolas 24 June 2019 (has links)
At the turn of the twentieth century and increasingly until the Second World War, French-language literature started to provide animals with capacities that were traditionally reserved for humans. In the relevant texts, animals have a rich emotional life, they interact and communicate with their environment and other living beings in numerous and complex ways ; by producing and interpreting signs, they construct a subjective world of their own. They demonstrate, moreover, amazing reasoning and cognitive abilities and original personalities. In short, at a time when, in philosophy, science and literature, prevail the anthropocentric paradigm and reductionist conceptions of animal life, literary animals become subjects, they are granted, by a whole set of writers, an existence. This existence is most of the time enigmatic : reading and writing therefore involve its unveiling, the deciphering but also the questioning and configuration of the animal "grimoire" (Genevoix). Inspired in particular by this heuristic metaphor, I wish in this piece of research to study how, between 1891 and 1938, French-language literary prose, thus a whole variety of writings, recreates animal lives, tries to apprehend the concrete nature of animals and the relationships we have with them. My final goal is to measure the ethical dimension of these texts which, by deconstructing anthropocentrism, help to rethink the way we view animals and our coexistence with them.

Animal writing : magical realism and the posthuman other.

Schwalm, Tanja January 2009 (has links)
Magical realist fiction is marked by a striking abundance of animals. Analysing magical realist novels from Australia and Canada, as well as exploring the influence of two seminal Latin American magical realist narratives, this thesis focuses on representations of animals and animality. Examining human-animal relationships in the postcolonial context reveals that magical realism embodies and represents an idea of feral animality that critically engages with an inherently imperialist and Cartesian humanism, and that, moreover, accounts for magical realism's elusiveness within systems of genre categorisation and labelling. It is this embodiment and presence of animal agency that animates magical realism and injects it with life and vibrancy. The magical realist writers discussed in this dissertation make use of animal practices inextricably intertwined with imperialism, such as pastoral farming, natural historical collections, the circus, the rodeo, the Wild West show, and the zoo, as well as alternative animal practices inherently incompatible with European ideologies, such as the Aboriginal Dreaming, Native North American animist beliefs, and subsistence hunting, as different ways of positioning themselves in relation to the Cartesian human subject. The circus is a particular influence on the form and style of many magical realist texts, whereby oxymoronically structured circensian spaces form the basis of the narratives‟ realities, and hierarchical imperial structures and hegemonic discourses that are portrayed as natural through Cartesian science and Linnaean taxonomies are revealed as deceptive illusions that perpetuate the self-interests of the powerful.

Building Blocks : Children's Literature and the Formation of a Nation, 1750-1825

Koay, Elvina 12 1900 (has links)
“Building Blocks: Children’s Literature and the Formation of a Nation, 1750-1825” examines how children’s literature imbues young readers with a sense of nationalism and national identity through the understanding of spaces and spatial relationships. The thesis studies various children’s works by Thomas Day, Sarah Fielding, Mary Wollstonecraft, Richard Lovell and Maria Edgeworth, Charles and Mary Lamb, Sarah Trimmer, Lucy Peacock, Priscilla Wakefield, John Aikin, and Anna Laetitia Barbauld. The various thematic subjects utilised reflect how boundaries between the exterior and interior dimensions, between the physical world and the psychological realm, are blurred. Drawing from the works of educational thinkers, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, writings for children highlight the importance of sensory experiences, which inform the internal developments of individuals. In return, the projection of imagination and the investment of feelings help shape the way people interact with the material world and with one another to form a nation. Using a Foucauldian approach, this thesis shows how discipline is instilled in children, turning them into regulated subjects. Through confessions and discourse, children subscribe to the notion of surveillance and transparency while an appreciation of public opinion further encourages the practice of self-control. Children become not only blank slates, susceptible to impressions, but readable bodies of writing. The values and norms of society are internalised, as children become part of the system that they adopt. The significance of visibility is also underscored in the popularity of the Linnaean system, which emphasises close observation and categorisation. Natural history in children’s literature reinforces the hierarchical structure of society, underscoring the need to respect class boundaries and perform individual roles for the wellbeing of the collective. The religious connotations in natural history may seem to justify class inequality; however, they also disseminate messages of charity, benevolence, and empathy, offering an alternative or “feminine” form of national identity that stands in contrast with militarism and patricianism. The second half of the thesis looks at how Benedict Anderson’s “imagined communities” becomes a possibility through the development of national taste and an understanding of the interconnection between individuals. The figure of the bard points to the centrality of communal spirit in national identity. Alongside the growing commercialisation of cultural and national products in the period were increasing emotional attachments to objects and the necessity in discovering the authentic in the practise of critical reflection. Property is redefined in the question of “true” ownership and becomes shared in the communal imagination. Dissected maps teach children how to visualise spaces and boundaries and conceptualise one’s place within society. Children learn that disparate actions performed in the domestic sphere have larger implications in the public realm of the nation.

Perceptions and knowledge regarding indigenous knowledge and environmental education in the Natural Science curriculum

Samuels, Kinsa Gita 31 December 2003 (has links)
Human activities that involve interactions amongst three players i.e. nature, humans and technology, continue to impact negatively on the Earth's biosphere. The impact is tremendous: consumption of resources at an unsustainable level leading to rapid loss of natural resources and biodiversity. The plea to reverse this negative trend is as valid now as it were many years ago. While some progress has been made to develop strategies to wisely manage and protect the Earth's resources, the state of the environment is still fragile. Strategies are far from satisfactory: hence the grounds for a new commitment in a manner best suited to a country's needs and resources. In recent years, research in indigenous knowledge systems has been pursued in an attempt to develop a deeper understanding of its complex linkages with the environment. Incorporating some of these linkages in the science curricula provides opportunities for learners to make informed choices to address individual and society's needs by extracting relevant elements from Western science and indigenous knowledge systems. This research focuses on the use of indigenous knowledge in science education offered to grade eight and nine learners in South African schools. As part of this education, science curricula, teaching methodologies and resources therefore should be developed in response to the changing needs of learners and their communities. A close look at the natural science learning area of Curriculum 2005 shows that the South African curriculum developers have under-used indigenous knowledge in the teaching and learning of science at school level. The conceptualization of an inclusive and just science education has been evaded. Perceptions elicited from a small group of academics, well versed in IK, indicate that the majority of South African science teachers will embrace the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in the natural science learning area but will require significant assistance from the Department of Education. The key to deal with this daunting task is for the relevant role players to establish partnerships with the knowers and holders of indigenous knowledge and to operate in a neutral, noble and altruistic manner and that in itself in the present context is highly problematic. / A teaching of Natural Sciences that meditates to the knowledge construction and formation of concepts is straightly connected the pedagogic praxis of the teachers for the initial years, soon the formation of the teacher needs to be revised, rethought, or the school will be emptied of his social function that is the construction and reconstruction of the historically produced knowledge. Like a support reference Vygotsky, Piaget and Vergnaud, were chosen that theoreticians discuss the formation of concepts, when the concepts formation is stretching out to the Natural Sciences, turned for the initial years. Because of this concern, the lifted problem was what would be the potentialities of a course of formation continued in the construction of Scientific Concepts with teachers who teaches classrooms of Sciences in the initial years. The inquiry elapsed in two stages. Initially a questionnaire was applied for 40 teachers who administer classrooms of sciences in the initial years in the municipal net in the Quatro Barras City, aiming at a survey on how teachers understand some theories about concept formation. The second stage wrapped the projection of the course and of the blog and the development of the course of formation continued for ten volunteer teachers. During the development of the course of 40 hours it was collected the Corpus of the inquiry, been composed of carving of the integrated modules, preparation of log book and realization of final interview. After the collection of the whole material was carried out a floating reading on basis of the analysis of content of Bardin and the indicators were defined for the present inquiry. After collecting all the material was performed a floating reading based on content analysis of Bardin and were defined two categories and six indicators for this research: the category A “formation for teaching in Natural Sciences” and the category B “teaching action aimed at the construction of concepts in the Natural Sciences”. On the basis of indicators of these categories, the contributions of the continuing training, with a view to build knowledge and to form concepts, proved to be positive and taken of awareness on the part of teachers the need to prepare for teaching activities, as well as proved productive in the sense of contributing to the construction of knowledge in the natural sciences. They experienced the use of Historical-critical Pedagogy as teaching activities with focus to bind the school knowledge to reality. Supported in the theoretical grounds, provided that the teachers are prepared for an action effective, it is concluded that it is possible the construction of knowledge and the formation of concepts in Natural Sciences in the initial years going beyond the mnemonic reproduction, promoting scientific literacy that enables the student to act in its surroundings.

A teaching of Natural Sciences that meditates to the knowledge construction and formation of concepts is straightly connected the pedagogic praxis of the teachers for the initial years, soon the formation of the teacher needs to be revised, rethought, or the school will be emptied of his social function that is the construction and reconstruction of the historically produced knowledge.
